Thicket had done fairly well in the previous day's race, and was more than happy to try again. The long path seemed more appealing to him; he was better at long strides than sprints.

 Charcoal knew he'd had a miserable performance yesterday. He just had to do better today! But since he'd had so much trouble on the straight track, no way was he taking the shortcut with all it's bramble. He stretched his paws ans wriggles his ears, waiting for the starting shout.

He lost a little speed on some mud, but that was okay. Middle ofthe pack was just fine. Especially at the beginning of a race.
