That was the word. Barth, for one, had not been spoiling for a fight. He was not built for last moment heroic rallies. He was all for an occasional defeated enemy, but being directly involved was not his favorite. He had hiked, carried, and fought. Most of his friends were dead. And he still had to deal with what was waiting for him at home.
So far he had been adept at delaying the inevitable.
He planned to continue that strategy into the foreseeable future.

She had come back to conciousness in time to see the end of it. It was all too fast; Siddie would understand later, perhaps. For now ... everyone was going home, and that would have to be enough.
She pushed herself slowly off the floor and wobbled over to lean on Sammy as they left.

As happy as was to go home and leave this accursed island, the entire series of events throughout the night had left the black dog both tired and angry. This whole trip was a mess! To make matters worse they were all stuck with a weeks worth of detention now? What for!? All they were guilty of was following orders by going on this blasted trip! Which they planned! Why should they be punished for that!? It was unfair!
Angrier now than he was before, Tybalt followed the others; not the least bit sad that the trip had come to an end.

It still didn't all add up. So much left unexplained, but they were offered a way home. They could finally leave. Shrugging off the rubble she dragged her mace behind her, catching Siddie as she stumbled against her and moved onward.
Home. That was all that mattered now.
