Legends/mythology
To those of you who were with me towards the end of the Closing ceromony, I'm sure you remeber my obsession with all things Legend and Greek Mythology related. So when I saw this up as a possible theme I just had to take a shot at it. In greek Mythology there were 12 main gods who ruled over the other minor gods. For a while it was 6 girls and 6 boys but Zeus wanted to appoint another guy for inventing wine and this one girl resighned so it became unequal but that another story that I really shouldn't be getting into right now!
We can have 4 rooms for this, Earth, Olympus, the Sea, and Hell.
In the Earth Section there would be those still alive, bound by the word of god and facing the monsters that appear like medusa or the manteqor. The plot for this one would probably be something like facing monsters snet by gods, or perhaps a group trying to defy/become gods themselves.
In Olympus it would be the world of the gods. With Zeus being the head god. The Gods Rule over Earth and watch the humans below. But Gods have their own problems too (I haven't really thought about a spevific plot for olympus but perhaps it could be something like one of the gods going missing?)
Hell or Underworld is ruled by the god Hades, the bitter brother of Zeus, he ensures that no souls ever escape hell. Cerberus, a giant 3 headed dog, helps to ensure this. The plot for this could be a group trying to escape from Hades and the underworld.
The Seas are rule by Triton, the final brother of Zeus and Hades, he rules the tides. He, however, is rather greedy, and is always trying to submerged more Earth beneath his waters to expand his territory. Again, I'm not really sure about a plot for the Sea.

Another them I thought of the ball was a cosplay theme. It would be four rooms again. Anime/Manga, Movies, Books, and TV I'm not really sure about plot lines for these though, since the four are rather broad subjects. But yeah, those ae two idea I had.

With all the mentions of rooms, I'm starting to dislike the rooms idea <_<;
I agree with Pixy...why do we need the rooms?! D:
As for the Steampunk idea, the thing is, its sort of presenting history in a different way, and its just a genre, it goes under fantasy. People like Jules Verne were writers of this sort.
So we actually have a whole LOT of area to do what we want with it, because its all fantasy and fiction! its about creating what we imagine the world in the future to be like while in the Victorian Era and many more. Ever read 20k under the sea? Takes place during the 80's but we have a freaking year 2020 submarine in that book <_<; So I dont see much limitations with steampunk idea, or many other ideas for that matter; we're all just closed off by our own imagination and willingess to break out of the norm.
If we so want to integrate other elements into the steampunk and still keep the rooms, we can even do that. An example would be to have different steampunk air ships, cruises, submarines etc whatever you want! you can have people of different sects and belief! Ie: A whole airship and its members are loyal worshippers of Hermes perhaps? Since everyone still seem keen on the myth idea lul
But I still think we should try changing things a bit more, and start putting more ideas in rather than quickly pick one off the bat. We dont just have to use the myth or steampunk idea.
Besides, not steampunk, how about cyberpunk?
Sheriff- nah I didnt mean to have the whoooole ball on the street fashion idea =_=; Our last few conversations here has been about integrating many different themes into one ball (ie the carnival, amusement park) so the street fashion idea was just ONE idea that I decked in just for possible evaluation as a side event in the ball or something. Not basing the whole ball off it.

I just want to put in that I really had fun in Truebliss' thread at the 7th ball. It was a castle themed murder mystery.
So I wanted to put Murder Mystery out there as an overall theme. I mean it was one of the threads for this ball, so I don't know if we'll want to repeat it. But it could be really fun!
I don't know what we'd do for the rooms, but I think rooms are a good idea for whatever theme we choose, personally. They allow people to pick something they're interested in, and that way the hosts can interact with people on a personal level, rather than us all trying to fit in just a few topics.
Rooms for a Murder Mystery could either be like rooms of support for the suspects, or like different rooms in the giant manor [Because all murder mysteries seem to take place in large estates!] that have different clues in them.
I know it probably wouldn't work.
But I had an idea.
And I wanted to share.

sorry to be such a post whore but...
you should liten to music by Abney Park. They are a steampunk band, they have a really cool style, i recommend Airship Pirates, New Black Day, and Herr Drosselmeyer's Doll.
they are all great songs

 The ball has always been made of several threads or "rooms" that represent something. I guess I'm one that leans towards more traditional stuff.
Also I don't know why we always seem to lean towards only 7 rooms. I've known the ball to have more rooms before. Also I've seen lots of rooms that are not RP heavy. This is the first year that I know of that the rooms were allowed to have their own plots. In the past the ball had one main plot and the rooms were just destinations that people could go to.
Also on the note of Steampunk... I have absolutely no idea what that is. o.O So, obviously I would automatically rule that out mainly since not everyone is going to know it. Personally I would be turned away from such an idea since it doesn't appeal to me in any way.
I mean I really wish they would open up Gambino's Mansion to us again, but that is highly unlikely. Nor would I want to see the ball limited to the Gaia Towns since not everyone can attend and that really stretches the ball thin when it becomes difficult to find people to help. >w<
I also know in the 6th Annual Ball we were going to go with Mythology, but we turned it down since it collaborated too much with the elements and having done them the previous year we thought it wasn't such a good idea. I mean we could do it, but I suppose it is so broad that anything could happen with the subject. I suppose it would solely depend on whether or not we could make it work in a feasible manner. Same with the Gods/Goddesses there are so many of them, how do you narrow them down? surprised
Also back to the number of rooms, we can do more or less, but since you can only make a poll of up to 10 we've limited ourselves to that number. Generally we do a higher end number to incorporate more people, but still within limits enough to be handled.
As of right now I really have no amazing out of the box ideas... so yeah. XD Maybe in a day or two when my creative juices are flowing sadly I've had my mind set on the 7 wonders of the world or 7 deadly sins for a while now, but I'm trying to move away from it and come up with some totally and completely different.

Steampunk is an alternate history in which coal becomes our main power source. airships powered by steam and attached to huge armored blimps cruise the skys, it is set in the victorian era. you should look at some pictures of things online. and i dont think we have decided to NOt do the seven sins.... i still think that it would be great to do....

Ever heard of Steamboy? thats Steampunk lulz besides, like we said, we should encompass multiple things into one to allow room for more creativity and difference. So people who knows steampunk can enter the steampunk room, or those who are curious can go in and check it out anyways! its pretty much the same with the 7 deadly sins. Not everyone knows what it is=/ I only found out what it was when I turned 15 <_< and thats cause I saw a program on it <_<;
and who is to say we cant have a brief introduction at each room, like this year, as to what our room is about? so people still can get a general idea of what steampunk is. Doesnt necessarily means the whole ball has to be centered around steampunk alone. Like I said, integration. A fleet of ships run under a religious group, a sky pirate ship that can encompass the Sin of Wrath and Gluttony or something.
It'll be much more interesting than just....the Sin wrath alone. Or just Gods and Goddesses theme. Putting 1 and 2 together gives us something else; something different at least, and not completely just the original form of the topic. I'm not saying we cant use the deadly sins or the myth ideas, I'm saying we should not limit ourselves so fast and also to try and polymerize different ideas together to come up with something else; ie: Deadly Sins + Steampunk / Myth+ Cyberpunk / Retro Games + Sc-Fi etc
that way, it wont be completely just a normal topic. Personally, if I just saw the theme as Gods and Goddesses, I'd get turn off. Doesnt sound too original. Now if it was Cyberpunk Gods, now that is something I would take a peek at.

lol unfortunately, I havent played that game haha Im more of the Fallout/ Oblivion/ Final Fantasy/ Harvest Moon type genre haha
You can not only have genetically enhanced humans as Gods (oooh those can be the heroes and demi-gods in myth! Such as Hercules or Orpheus, maybe? )
You can maybe have 'divine beings'(I like the idea of Heavnyl beings using computers and such LOL) making contact into the world through computers, or even the 'bad' beings such as Hades or the Titans hacking (take over, whatever lol) computers and nets and holding the world hostage haha it'll be more fun than the ordinary open a portal or something and send minions into the world. Hades can probably be sending viruses into the computers and those who uses a computer that has been infected will probably be flashed something or a sound of some sort transmitted from their speakers and they fall dead lulz
The Titans, as they were Elder Gods (i'm just making some random s**t up as I go haha) that were banished by the Olympians, might have possibly broke through the Firewall (LOL wall of fire literally, or the firewall in computers, either way works) that imprisoned them and are getting their revenge. They take over the minds of people who uses any electronic devices that has been corrupted by them, such as cellphones etc Using the cellphone or mp3 player that has been corrupted by them, a strange music or voice will be played to the user instead and their mind will slowly be taken over and replaced with the deeds that the Titans wants them to do etc I dunnoe...i'm running on Cherry sugar high lol x_X;

TemporalMeteor and you know.. victorian fashion is beautiful. i really dont think anyone would NOT like it. as in they wouldnt hate it and not come because of that. also everyone likes pirates, we could have someone be the captain of the pirate ship and people would probably flock to the person they liked the most, steampunk gives many options for personality types. we could also throw some magic in if it is needed. i think that we could a little something for EVERYONE, with all the possibiltys no one could possibly be left out We already had the Victorian age in the 6th annual ball as a room that is what I am trying to say. I am not saying the idea is a bad Idea, If it could be elaborated more to where anyone can understand it (steampunk) and not just people who work for the ball. I think doing it with that much real stuff will require alot of research from anyone. If we go with the steampunk idea we could create a thread in this guild for people who researched that era (victorian age) to place the facts that are needed in there. So we all can pitch in and help.

Still don't really understand what it is. .____. I really don't get it, though I'd like to understand what this whole Steampunk thing is, but I really don't have time to look it up. Anyways it sounds too Time Period wise. surprised So, I highly recommend trying to stay away from that since we've done that twice already. razz
I'll update the list of elaborations in a bit. Still no new ideas on my part yet.

I'm not familiar with the steampunk expression. Maybe I have been living under a rock. >.> If we want to delve deeper into this steampunk idea I have no problems googling information to make myself more knowledgeable on the subject. From reading what you guys have said I get the impression that its flying ships? Like in final fantasy? Or have I missed the mark?
Hosting the ball on a ship is not that bad of an idea. And the "rooms" could in truth be ... lol, rooms. Or well, areas on said ship. If you want to encompass other ships, I'd likely recommend that to be done as more of an 'invasion'.
Making things easy for people to go from one area of our ball to the next is likely to be the most ideal. The further you spread the guests apart in distance the harder it is for them to mingle amongst the rooms. And, additionally, harder for people to make their personal threads follow our concepts. With areas that connect like going from a 'dinning hall' to say.. ball room floor.. would make it easier to have everything co-relate. Not nearly as easy to go from one ship to another as it is to walk down a hallway.
Though, I Imagine I am thinking more along the lines of a cruise ship in my theories behind this (mind you I haven't done research yet on it, so am left to assume its like a regular ship just in flight.)
If you wanted to tie the sins and this ship thing.. Why not make these sins like Playable God/Goddess characters. Like a Goddess of Lust, God of Sloth. They'd be more like walking gods.. and when they entered into a room.. their sin would.. effect the room. Lust could be a bit. .risque.. and how we could inflict carnal pleasure in a pg13 would be a bit of a challenge, but I am sure doable. Sloth could.. make everyone very lackadaisical. Envy and.. well.. suddenly the guests /ship staff would be envious of one another. Stirring plots at every turn. And being that they're gods, they wouldn't have to make many appearances to be felt.
Well, I have been hearing many who have wanted to do sins, but i haven't really heard much feed back on how they would encompass the sins. I strongly encourage that the themes we chose are not designed too much like a documentary. But, yet, if we use pre-made gods like those of the greeks, etc, we must do enough research to make sure that we are believably and accurate while also presenting it to gaians in a way that they can relate to. I.e.

The reason my curiosity came up about the 7 room deal is because if we do a carnival.. I'd likely suggest we scrapped the 7 room outline and used the sticky threads as a means to outline the schedule of events. Maybe a thread or two utilized as plot development, but for the most part, rides and events would be rather scattered out into regular threads. And going through the forum would be like going through the carnival.. with regular threads set up as rides, games, etc. The same theory could be encouraged with a ship.. Make a plot line that is loose enough for the general public to be able to contribute to verses trying to entirely rope them into our stickied threads. I've gone back into many of the memorable threads and have found the common trend that the non-sticky threads get more post counts than the ones we do. Its not a bad trend, but more so one that we should expand on.
