New beginnings were becoming somewhat of a trend in Vyn's life, however she had come to the conclusion that there never really could be a truly new beginning and all the quaint little phrases that had been coined by society to describe starting anew hinted at this. Turning over a new leaf, wiping the slate clean, making things fresh - no matter how hard you try to erase your history some stain will always remain on the slate, the ugly side of the leaf will still be there despite being out of sight, and no matter how many times you try to oust the odour of your past it will always seep back in through the cracks. When she had been removed from Shuura it was meant to be a new beginning, but she had been unable to let go of her fondness for her old guardian. Those feelings remained even now - a reminiscent fondness for her somewhat wayward parent figure... And then after Ethan's illness they had moved away and that was supposedly another new start. Carried away in planes and boats across the globe to one relaxing island resort after the next, allowing Ethan to regain his health by soaking up the summer sunshine and proving her with exotic evening shadows cast across the beach by waving palms. Yet despite the idyllic atmosphere the rose raevan's heart began to ache for the company of her fellow raevans and their drama filled lives, until the magnetic pull of friendship tugged her back.
Ethan had originally been very sceptical about the rose's decision to return - he had been shaken by his health scare and the hustle and bustle of Gaia triggered a fretting state of mind - however his dark eyed daughter had implored him. "If you won't go back then at least allow me to return. I can care for myself." The thought of losing his flower overcame his fears and he had started looking at property in the area - the penthouse had been sold so they needed a new home. Within a few months they had sorted out everything and were back on a plane to Gaia, Ethan considerably more tanned and much healthier than how he had been when he had left. The ex-businessman had eventually settled on a converted chapel, out in the countryside, to become their new home. It was a pleasant blend of modern and old, with huge airy rooms akin to the penthouse that they had previously resided in, but the decor was much softer. Whereas before the rooms in the penthouse had been sleek and modern with gleaming white walls and metal and glass surfaces, this home was softened by exposed brick and stone walls, with light streaming in through the huge ex-stained glass windows and views into the fields and woods that surrounded them. Ethan was very happy and Vyn was too.
The frei was now suspended within the centre of her new room, her honey hued eyes gazing around at the space that she would make her own. She had been given the loft - it was a huge space, far larger than her previous room, but the sloped roof made it feel smaller; cosier. Accessible through a trap door (the estate agent had sold it as an 'exciting room ideal for children wanting their own unique space') it was perfect for the raevan who could easily float up, however Vyn was mildly dissapointed when she realised that her beloved Thorn could not get to her room unless he was carried. Her bed was up one end and above the wrought iron headboard was a circular window overlooking the slightly overgrown garden and towards the thicket of trees nearby.
It was hot and stuffy and smelt of new paint but Vyn could see the potential to imprint her stamp upon the room.
First things first she needed to get some fresh air circulating. The windows were stiff but once they were open the summer evening breeze revitalised the frei. Next she needed to unpack. She didn't have much, only one small black suitcase sitting next to the trap door. The repeated resetting of her life had resulted in a lack of attachment to clutter and Ethan's ample funds meant that she only really treasured items of sentimental value. After all, clothes, furniture, technology and so on could be re-bought but tokens of friendship weren't available online or in shops. Vyn scooped up the case, dumped it on the bed and opened it.
On the top layer of the contents was the dress and corset she had worn to the winter masquerade with Zul and Alex. With a fond smile she took it from the case and placed it on the clear portion of bed next to the case, smoothing out the material and arranging it thoughtfully so that it looked like a proper outfit as opposed to a jumble of clothes. Vyn glanced around the room and noted that there was no wardrobe and made a mental note to mention that to Ethan. This was one of the few items of clothing that the rose had kept during her period away. Tropical islands did not really allow for excessive layering and most of her ample wardrobe had been dissolved... But this outfit had a special place in her heart. Moving forward with her unpacking she lifted out a slightly battered envelope. Black nailed fingers slipped into the envelope and drew out a selection of photographs. Friendly faces beamed out from them and in response Vyn's lips softened into an affectionate smile. There was Rivener, grinning as he hugged her - his 'little sister' - and Xiu with his handsome features and polite smile that Ethan approved thoroughly of, and a group photograph from a LAB party, with Dr Kyou, Alex, Zul, Lulu, and many other raevans happily posing for the snap. She had frames somewhere in a cardboard box waiting to be unpacked downstairs, but for now she placed the photographs on her bedside table, propping them up as best she could so that the old friends were watching her.
Before she could unpack much more Ethan's voice floated up through the warm summer air, calling to her. "Vyn, hey Vyyyn," she floated towards the trap door so that she could hear better and respond, "come down here please - I have something I want to do with you." The rose frowned. Ethan had a lot more unpacking to do than her and she had expected him to be busy with that for the majority of the evening. She had no idea what he would want her for.
"Ethan..?" He wasn't on the upstairs balcony that the trapdoor led down to and he wasn't within his bedroom, though his suitcase was there - half unpacked with a suit draped over the back of a chair. "I'm just outside," Ethan called, popping his head through the front door and looking up through the huge open plan living room that had once been where the congregation would have sat. Vyn smiled at him and rose over the balcony and dropped down to the floor. The distance would have broken the legs of a human, but the raevan's glowing red rune swelled with energy and her wings beat with surprising force allowing Vyn to descend quite gracefully. Thorn, who disliked the heat, had been sleeping on a sofa raised his squished face and let his tongue loll out blissfully before hopping to his feet and padding over to where his mistress' ribbon skimmed the stone floor.
When she went outside Vyn was slightly surprised to find Ethan a few feet away, on his knees leaning with one hand against the wall and holding in his other hand a trowel. "I know this looks odd and we've only just moved in but..." Ethan leant back and motioned towards a familiar plant sat next to him on the grass, "I thought that it might be nice to pick up a new hobby - gardening. My doctor said that I need to keep fit and getting out and about in the garden should keep me active." He patted the small border of soil that ran alongside the base of the walls, "I'm going to plant these up with flowers.. It'll take a while to get established, or so I have read, and there's no rush, but I wanted to plant this right away... With you. To mark our arrival." Vyn couldn't contain her smile as Thorn sniffed curiously at the small rose bush that Ethan was suggesting they plant. "What do you think?"
The poor plant looked sad in its uprooted state but she knew that as soon as it was planted in the right place, it would put down its roots and flourish. Much like herself really... "I think it's a lovely idea."
