Day of Solitude

10-26-09
Color of the day: Ivory
Incense of the day: Neroli

In the modern world, it seems to be one long, hectic, stressful holiday season from Samhain to Twelfth Night. It’s difficult to put yourself first, but every once in a while, you have to draw firm boundaries for your own well-being. Today is a day of solitude. Take a day off from work and your family responsibilities. Go to a museum or take a walk or a yoga class or spend the day meditating. But do it on your own. It’s very important to stay away from the television and the computer and to keep your cell phone and other phones turned OFF. You can’t be successful at being with others if you aren’t any good at being alone and taking on all aspects of your own personality. Use today to face parts of yourself, both good and bad, that you’ve avoided. Truly listen to yourself.

A Cat Petting Meditation

10-27-09
Color of the day: Red
Incense of the day: Bayberry

In ancient Egypt, petting cats was akin to prayer. The feline persuasion was perceived to have empathic qualities not found in other animals. Indeed, the ancient Egyptians believed that cats were highly telepathic, spiritually aware, and advanced beyond our basic psychic levels. Bast (or Bastet), the Egyptian cat deity, was believed to be the mother of all life. Throughout history, our domestication of the feline has served to protect our households from vermin and snakes. Renowned for their agility and prowess, cats guard us and help dispel our fears. To alleviate anxiety or sorrow, as well as to cultivate self-love, pet a black cat 82 times, a number aligned with Anael, the angel of Venus. With each stroke, purr.

Spell for Psychic Skills

10-28-09
Color of the day: Brown
Incense of the day: Bay laurel

Today is a Wednesday, a Mercury day, and we are in a waxing Moon phase. With Samhain around the corner, this is a good time to try to increase your psychic communication skills. Arrange an orange and a purple candle in their holders. Any size or style of candle is fine. The orange candle is for the Samhain season, and the purple candle is for psychic power. (Both of these colors are associated with Mercury.) Light the candles and repeat the following charm:
By the powers of Mercury, increase my psychic skills,
Intuitive knowledge now flows smoothly, that is my will.
This communication spell is spun from the heart,
Worked for the good of all, with a Witch’s true art.
Let the candles burn out in a safe place.

Clean the Closets

11-3-09
Color of the day: Maroon
Incense of the day: Ylang-ylang

Today is not a good day for most ritual work, but it would be productive for cleaning and getting rid of things you no longer need, both on the material level and the psychic level. When is the last time you evaluated your path, your activities? What things do you have for a ritual that you never performed, a hobby you no longer engage in, a sport you no longer play? Now is the time to move those things out of your life to make room for your future self. You could make this into a ritual by casting a circle around your whole house or living area. Meditate on who you are now and who you wish to become. Then, go through the areas you want to tidy and choose items that no longer belong. Put them in garbage bags or boxes for later disposal: garage sale, donation, recycling, trash.

Divination Spell

11-4-09
Color of the day: Brown
Incense of the day: Lavender

To enhance your divination ability, spread out a cloth or scarf in your favorite color. Place your divination tools on the cloth and sprinkle with cinnamon and lavender. Sit before this spread and light a white candle for connection to spirit and pure insight. Light frankincense incense. Wave your divination tool through the incense and the candle, inviting the wisdom of the universe to come through. Wrap the tools with the herbs. Place your receiving hand on top of your tools and wave the candle around your head and your heart. Next, wave the incense while asking the wisdom of the tool and the universe to speak compassionately through you.

Invocation to the Crone

11-7-09
Color of the day: Indigo
Incense of the day: Ivy

As the year wanes, life dwindles and withdraws. Flowers die and go to seed. Trees lose their leaves. Birds fly south. Animals hibernate in their snug dens. The world grows old. This is the time of the Crone goddess. Her withered limbs have carried her a long way; now she is tired and ready to rest. Ancient wisdom twinkles in her eyes. Call on her and she will share it with you.
Crone Goddess, Hag Goddess,
Grandmother Moon –Hear me, I’m calling you!
Let me bring you a blanket
To warm your old bones.
Let me sit at your feet
And listen to your stories.
Crone Goddess, I’m calling you!
Come to me now!

Death Card Transformation Spell

Color of the day: Green
Incense of the day: Sandalwood

Today is the Christian All Souls’ Day, a holiday very similar to the Celtic Samhain. It is a day for remembering friends and family who have died. The Sun is in Scorpio today, and appropriately, the tarot card appropriate to this day is the Death card. The Death card can indicate physical death, but it more often means transformation. It focuses on the death of an old way of living or thinking and on the birth of a new way of life or thinking. Today, put aside any outdated or unhealthy ways of thinking or behaving. Begin fresh and think healthy thoughts and promote beneficial behaviors. For inspiration, look to friends, family members, heroes, mentors, and teachers who have passed on. How can you be inspired in your transformation by their lives? Be grateful for their example in your life.

Fitness Pact

11-9-09
Color of the day: Gray
Incense of the day: Narcissus

Fitness allows us to have a better quality of life. Millions of people start every January with resolutions pertaining to fitness. By February, the majority abandon them. Our New Year begins with Samhain. Why not come up with a sacred fitness program we can keep? Take time to reflect on the types of exercise you need to achieve the level of fitness you desire. Make a list of the types of workouts you enjoy. See how much of these two lists overlap. Start slowly. Make your fitness time ritualistic: start with a fitness prayer or a moment or two in Tadasana, or Mountain, pose. Don’t leap from zero fitness to full fitness right away. You’ll grow exhausted, injured, frustrated, and might give up. Build your practice, as you’ve built your spiritual practice. Ask the goddess Nike for her blessing—you don’t have to wear clothes bearing her name in order to receive her support!

Protection from Strange Energy

11-8-09
Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Almond

At this time of year, the veil between our world and that of the ancestors and spirits is mighty thin. With the Moon in Cancer, it’s a good time to learn a simple energetic protection exercise. We all have moments where we encounter adverse energy from a certain location. At times, our psychic senses can feel this energy coming from an even more specific area, like in front of or behind us. These are often passing spirits, astral entities, or energetic imprints left from past events. The next time you happen upon a spot of questionable energy, use the following spell. Whether the energy you sense is actual or just “in your head” (though the case is usually the former), this will help the situation. With the pointer finger of your projecting hand (the hand you write with), trace a large banishing pentagram. See it glowing in blue flame between you and the adverse energy, and say, “Harm not me, this energy I see. As I will, so mote it be.”

Long Lost Friend Spell

11-10-09
Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Geranium

If you’ve ever lost touch with an old friend, try this spell to help bring them back into communication with you again. If you can, find a picture of them; if not, just write their name. You’ll need a plain magnet, which you can usually pick up in a craft store. Paint the magnet yellow with a purple planetary Mercury symbol in the middle. Sign your name on the other side. Now stick the photo or name to your fridge with your Mercury magnet.
My dear old friend, we have lost track,
If you also wish our friendship back,
This magnet will draw thee to me,
As we both will, so mote it be.
Wait, you’re not done yet! Magic often takes the path of least resistance, so start searching phone books and the Internet. You may just find that your long lost friend is looking for you, too.

Honoring Veterans

11-11-09
Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Honeysuckle

Today is Veterans Day. This holiday was founded to honor all those who have fought for peace and freedom. Many Pagan traditions, particularly the historic tribal ones, have a particular reverence for warriors. Some Native American tribes have special societies for warriors. According to the Asatru, warriors who fall in battle are carried by Valkyries to Valhalla. Are there any veterans in your family tree? If so, honor them today; if not, you may choose a family friend or just honor all veterans in general. Speak their names, if you know them. Drink a toast in their memory, preferably mead or ale, but fruit juice will suffice if you avoid alcohol. Brag about the fine land you live in and the happy life you lead. Tell the warriors of old how grateful you are that their sacrifices helped make possible the benefits you enjoy today.

A Children’s Spell

11-14-09
Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Rue

Children flood temples in India today to receive blessings from the Goddess. Celebrate this festival with your children by taking them to the park or to a hillside. Have your child make a wish and blow bubbles. Watch the bubbles float up into the sky carrying your child’s wish up to the Goddess. It’s important not to speak of the wish, in order for it to come true. Have the child make as many wishes as they like and join in if you have a mind to do so. Leave an offering of fruit or flowers for the Goddess at the base of a tree. To protect your child from illness and negativity, hang a string of little bells from the ceiling over your child’s bed. Coral has been used as protection for children for thousands of years. If you’re lucky enough to find a piece of broken coral washed up on the beach, by all means, put it on the windowsill of your child’s room for extra protection.

Cut-Away Spell

11-15-09
Color of the day: Gold
Incense of the day: Heliotrope

If you need to separate yourself from a person, this would be an excellent time to do a “cut-away” spell to sever your psychic connection. This could be a former boyfriend or girlfriend, an ex-spouse, someone you used to work with, or even someone you used to consider a friend. You need an athame or other ritual knife for this spell. If you don’t have one, the largest kitchen knife you have would work, especially if you have had it for a long time. Do not cast a circle, because you want to interact with the energies outside of you. Stand facing north and point the knife away from you. Chant “_____, I cut you out of my life” over and over while turning in a circle, pointing the knife away from you until you reach the position you started in. Then point your knife down, and touch the tip to the ground.

Compassionate New Moon Spell

11-16-09
Color of the day: Silver
Incense of the day: Lily

Perform this spell if you’d like to stimulate balance in your life and become a kinder, more compassionate person. It is best to cast a circle. You’ll need a flowing white outfit, a small hand mirror, rose incense, one black candle, and one white candle. In your flowing white outfit, light the incense and set the items on your altar. Place the two candles a hand’s space apart, with the black one on your left and the white one on your right. Light the wicks of the two candles and hold the mirror up to your face. Say this incantation to your reflection: “I seek to be compassionate and loving, balanced and harmonious.” Put the mirror down between the two candles and stand. Hold your arms up high with palms facing the sky and say:
Oh ancient ones
I take within me your many blessings.
Guide me on this path
Help me achieve my perfect balance!
To finish the spell, hold the black candle and walk counterclockwise within your circle. When you return to your altar, pick up the white candle and walk clockwise within sacred space. Now, meditate or write in your Book of Shadows.

Home Blessing Spell

11-17-09
Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Ginger

Today is Homemade Bread Day. Bread is a potent symbol of the hearth as the heart of the home. To bless your home, pack a basket with a loaf of bread, salt, spice, and wine and cover with a cloth. Identify the heart of your home and set up a small altar that includes your chalice and athame, rose quartz for affection, and a green candle. Place the basket on the altar. Create sacred space, calling in the gods. Unpack the basket and arrange the items on the altar. Present each item to the elements and the gods. For the bread say, “May this home always have nourishment.” Eat some bread. For the salt say, “May this home always have flavor.” Put some salt in your chalice. For the spice say, “May this home always have spice to keep things lively.” Put some spice in the chalice. For the wine say, “May this home always have something to celebrate.” Present your chalice and athame to the elements and the gods. Slowly lower the blade into the chalice and say, “As the blade is to the God, so the chalice is to the Goddess, together they are one. Meld these blessings to hearth and home. So mote it be!” Close your circle and enjoy the bounty of your hearth.

Psychic Enhancement Tea

11-18-09
Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Marjoram

Sometimes the psychic senses can seem blocked or stymied. A small bit of meditation over a cup of the following tea can be a great help at such times. Blend the following ingredients finely in a mortar and pestle: 1 tablespoon dried mugwort; 1 teaspoon each dried lemon balm, dried yarrow, and dried peppermint leaves; and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Place in tea ball or tea bag. Brew in boiling water about 10 minutes. Add a bit of sugar or honey to taste. As you sip the tea, inhale the fragrant steam. Visualize your third eye becoming more open and its vision becoming clearer. Continue this visualization until your finish your tea and then proceed with your psychic work.

A Spell for Regaining Contact

11-21-09
Color of the day: Blue
Incense of the day: Sage

Hello! Today is World Hello Day. World Hello Day was begun as a result of the conflict between Egypt and Israel in 1973. The object of today is to say hello to ten people in the promotion of peace. Has it been too long since your last hello with someone? Place their name in an envelope (include a photo if you have it), and put it on your altar. Think of the person and say:
Though the time has gone by fast
Think of me, while this I cast
No matter how far you have roamed
Find a way back to my home.
Now seal the envelope with red wax. On the back of the letter write the person’s name and yours. Draw a red circle around it in a clockwise manner. Now mail it to yourself and wait to hear from them.

Pantry Purge

11-19-09
Color of the day: Turquoise
Incense of the day: Mulberry

Hestia and Rosemerta are my patrons of home, hearth, and cupboard. A well-stocked larder is a tribute to them and a way to feel secure and abundant. Unfortunately, we often leave things in our pantries that are stale and out-of-date. This encourages the accumulation of stagnant energy, which ripples out to affect other areas of our lives. Light a flowery or citrusy candle or incense. Play energizing music. Open your cupboards. Take everything out. Wipe the shelves down with baking soda and vinegar and dry thoroughly. Change the shelf paper. As you return items to the shelves, make sure you only put back things that are still fresh and things you will use. Items that are still edible but no longer part of your lifestyle can be donated to a local food bank. Items that are outdated should be thrown out. You’ll be amazed at how many obstacles in your life disappear with the cupboard rubble!
