Donkey Kong. I'm not joking, Lanky Kong played the Trombone, which made me want to play it, so I did.

I joined band mainly because I wanted to try it and thought it'd be fun to learn a new instrument. Since several of my relatives enjoyed the trumpet- including my dad- I decided to play it. I loved it, so I stayed in band and did my best to get better. Now, I'm bettering myself as a trumpet player while I learn piano and guitar. I might try to learn saxaphone or trombone, once I'm able to get enough money for lessons, but either one would be fun to play=)
Music is my life now. Without band, I wouldn't have a way to be with my friends, who I love dearly, while still being able to make music.

Band is one of the best things that has happened. I joined because I needed something different to do, and it sounded fun. I picked the clarinet because in fifth grade, when they let us see which instrument we could blow through best, clarinet was the winner. So a year later, my mom bought my very own clarinet. If I hadn't have picked the clarinet, I would have probably chose the flute, but I'm happy with the clarinet. heart

I joined band back when I was in 6th grade because I loved music and I thought it was a really awesome thing, but I just couldn't play my instrument very well(clarinet) so I gave it up. In 8th grade I tried color guard but I wasn't very good at that either....finally in 11th grade(yes I know too long to wait if only I had of knew what instrument to play!) my ex was in band and played Baritone, I became fascinated with the instrument and eventually taught myself the cords while just messing around with one. I learned to play a lot of things by ear, and I couldn't read music very well so I had to write the notes down on my sheet and memorize them (1,3 2,3 ect ect) I excelled at it though. I had a passion for it. It just really ticked me off how everyone said the only reason I joined band was because of my ex because it wasn't. If anyone had of known me they would have known I had tried to be in band before and failed miserably, I just never found my niche. I remember when we went to Band camp I couldn't figure out how this one part was supposed to sound, since I played by the sound of the music, I had to know what it sounded like before I could play it, so one of the teachers showed me and he said goodness you have very good inflection(then he asked me how long I had been playing) when I told him 4 months or so he looked shocked, he said he had heard people who had been playing for years that never had inflection that good smile I just had to grin. The one bad thing was I could never keep up with the majorette so when we played I had memorized my part by what everyone else played....if they were off I was off too...oh well....sadly my days with the Baritone are over. I'd love to get one that I could call my own but I don't have the money nowadays, that's life though. It was still an awesome year and a half that I would never give up for anything in the world smile .

Why did you join band? I joined band entirely for the marching band. The marching band at my high school was a very good one.
(Ironically, we had our most success in my single year of having my own spot. XD Not because of me, though. I'm not conceited like that. In fact if we hadn't had such success I would have blamed it all on me.)
Why did you pick the instrument that you did? I picked the trumpet because my cousin played it, and my cousin was in the awesome marching band that I wanted to join, and I was not really able to think for myself back then at all.
I chose my second main instrument, bassoon, on pretty much entirely a whim. I also had encouragement from other people... But pretty much it was just because I liked the sound, and thought that because the sound was awesome the instrument had to be awesome to play as well.
With just a small whim like that, we can say for sure that I'm lucky I actually ended up loving it, right?
What do you think you would be doing if you didn't join the band? I can't imagine what things would be like at this point. I don't even know what I'd be majoring in.
It would have changed the entire course of everything. surprised I wouldn't have met many people from band, and I wouldn't have any of my friends which would change everything and stuff like that.
I just couldn't imagine it... Everything would be different. The funny thing is I might actually have self confidence, too. Yes I found one thing that band has made me worse in, and that's just that it has destroyed my self confidence on a few occasions. But I suppose my self insufficiency would have come to light in some other form if I hadn't joined band.
What instrument, if any, would you play if you didn't pick the one you did? Bassoon was that instrument... Okay actually clarinet was... Well, actually oboe and saxophone were as well... and even French horn for a short time.
I wouldn't switch from the bassoon, though. My only interest is getting and truly learning saxophone for future marching... So saxophone would have to be my answer. Tenor saxophone specifically.

I joined band to further myself as a musician, then quit shortly afterwards because I was farther ahead on my own, the BD was crap, the kids were pompous assholes, and nobody knew what real talent was. Talent does not come from your books. It comes from the soul. and until people realize this, you are doomed to fail as a musician. If you want to learn something, your better off picking it up on your own and teaching yourself.

I joined Concert Band to learn an instrument, and meet new friends. I joined Marching band to meet new friends, hang out with other friends, and for the physical activity. I joined GI band to stay active, to stay with my friends, and to meet new ones! And, for all of them.....TO HAVE FUN!

I originally became part of the band program because I had picked up the violin and hated it, but all of my family was in music in some way and I wanted to join music somehow so I chose to join band. When they started brining out the instruments to show us what our choices were I thought all of the woodwinds looked way too complicated, and I loved the trombone, and the baratone but the tuba was really huge so I chose that one lol biggrin

I remember the first time I ever heard the drumline. That's when I knew I wanted to be in band.
In fifth grade I my band teacher recommended me to play the baritone. But I really wanted to be in percussion. So I asked him and he said it was totally fine.
I went one year playing baritone, mallets and snare as a 5th grader. Now I'm in the middle school marching band. When marching I play quads then during concert band I usually play mallets, chimes or anything the other people can't play.

I joined band because I thought it would be fun and easy. I was somewhat wrong. My BD let me do anything I want and I still got an A so I had nothing to do and found myself bored. I wish that BD trusted me to actually play.

REASON 1: Well, at my Middle School we could join band and not take PE because bnd would count as our physical education class. I didn't want PE so I joined band. REASON 2: Every year, for christmas and spring, we would have the Middle School's band go to our elementary school and play for us. Then the BD would go on how band was so great and how it was the only Middle School nearby that would go to events like the parades in other towns. I decided to join and see what it was all about and loved it. I actually got the chance to go to Washington DC and play in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival during 7th grade.
