It wasn't that she wouldn't love the dog. Because she would. Probably a lot. But as she usually worked as a Warden, most of her time was taken up with missions. The small amount of free time that she did get was normally taken up by her projects. Maybe she'd get a dog when she was older and things were more relaxed. Right now, it just couldn't be done.

"Oh, I see." She quirked an eyebrow back at him. Though she knew that she had misunderstood him, Melanie generally wasn't the type to admit when she had been wrong. Especially when the issue wasn't a big deal in the first place. So instead of admitting her mistake, she skipped on to answer his question. "Hopefully, yes. I doubt it would have saved that one," She jabbed her thumb in the direction of the house. "But it might have just made it fiz out for a bit. Or maybe it would have still been fried, but easier to repair. I really don't know how well it would do with extremely new stuff, but slightly older models should do fine. If it turns out that this thing actually works, anyway." She glanced at his pendant then up at him. "It'd work like that one does, but stronger. Hypothetically, of course. But I'm working on it."

This is no white cross, it seems we're out of class...
Artesia sighed a bit and sat up, giving William a smile that said, "You're no fun, but I forgive you." It was easy to forgive him at that point, since she knew that once she finished off the food, they might be out of there. Now, it depended on who wanted dessert afterward. Sometimes she did. This was probably not going to be one of those nights, but you never can tell.

"Okay, I don't care who gets the graham crackers, though you mentioned chocolate, and that's two of the needed three ingredients. Someone could be nice and get those," she said in a matter-of-fact way. She had fallen into den mother mode. Sometimes she felt like she had a bunch of teenagers to raise. Didn't help that many of them acted like it. Fortunately, this was a pretty mature group. "Either way, I'm really in the mood for s'mores." Turning to Marco, she added, "I'll bring out the hot dogs depending on who's hungry when we start." If the bonfire was ending off the night, it could be starting anywhere between midnight and 3 in the morning. If it started at midnight, she probably wouldn't bring them out, but if it started after 1, she probably would.

Normally she would relish the hot grease that that slid down her fried delight and lick her lips often. This time she was inhaling them, and was already through a fourth of them and hadn't stopped to even wipe her mouth yet. She had after-dinner plans. But the fries were always first to be eaten. French fries just weren't the same cold.

As Kassandra waited for Cailee to start her round of questions again the woman's ears perked at the sound of movement. She probably would have ignored it had the movement in question not been headed toward them. Sure enough after she'd heard it the sound of a voice reached her ears. Looking up Kassandra's eyebrows rose as she saw the owner of the voice was an old man. As she started to mentally giggle she snorted mentally as well when the man addressed them.

Old man, little ones.. Well yes, Cailee was a little one. Kassandra was far from being one though. There was no doubt in Kassandra's mind that she was old enough to be the old man's great-great-great grandmother or something along those lines. Quickly stopping the fit she was having in her head, while keeping her outer appearance completely neutral, mind you, she listened to the old man. After hearing what he said her eyes narrowed some as she looked at Cailee.

The man was the girl's grandfather? For some reason that didn't really click with her. Watching as Cailee obediently stood next to the man though, it was clear he was defiantly something. He was no ordinary grandfather though. To know that about her kind, well, most ordinary humans didn't know what he knew. Hunters, yes, but not ordinary humans. Taking note of Cailee's warning glance Kassandra stood.

It wasn't like she was going to do anything in public. Cailee had nothing to worry about. "I didn't tell Cailee anything she wasn't going to learn, I'm sure, but if I'm to be punished.." She shrugged her shoulders, "I will be, but I hardly think what I told her was anything major, so.."

Looking over at Cailee she smiled, "I'll see you around, kid." Then looking at the old man she smirked. "Later, old man," she told him before leaving the restraint. After she had gotten a good distance away Kassandra let out a sigh. Would she really be punished? Why did she always let her mouth get her in to trouble? Rolling her eyes the woman let out a sigh again. Well, it was time to head to the park, where she hoped that she would stay alive.

Still smiling as the Vampire stood and said her farewells, Philipe lowered his voice and spoke in a none-too grandfatherly tone, icy remarks directed solely at Kassandra for the time being. Despite his age, his voice carried with it a powerful air of use, almost seeming to make the air around him turn colder. In fact, it did, several passerby's heads turning to figure out why the temperature seemed to drop suddenly. "You be sure to tell Rourke to behave himself tonight. I would suggest that you do the same." All the while the welcoming grin stayed firm, though his eyes glinted dangerously. Whether he was angry or otherwise, it could not be said, but surely as anything he said, this was a direct threat.

Snapping back to his warm self almost faster than one could blink, he chided Cailee as a thin yet oddly firm hand guided her to and through the door. "Now now, little Cailee," he said softly as soon as they were free of the restaurant, "You know very well that you should not be doing any Magic outside of our headquarters." He sighed. This was always the hardest lesson for the new Apprentices: not using magic away from the base unless his or her life was in peril. He looked her over, making sure there were no marks or other telltale signs that told of a Vampire's visit. Another sigh. "And what in the world were you thinking, speaking so casually to one of them? Especially when you knew what she was!" The exclamation came with a stern look. "If I hadn't followed your trail, you might very well be dead or worse: one of them." For the umpteenth time, a sigh. She would learn soon enough. Softening is features, he continued guiding her down the street, speaking in smoother and more normal tones fit for a grandfather. "Just be careful from now on, aright? Will you promise me that?" He nodded as if she answered anyway, still leading her.

Glancing around the streets, he concentrated, although the effort was minimal, looking for sources of Magic that he could recognize. A few souls around him winked dully, their potential ability perhaps going as far as being able to light a candle, but no further. Pity . . . Our numbers are dwindling as it is. That was not his target, however. Others had that duty of finding new Apprentices. He looked harder, drawing within himself as he spiraled his search outward beyond his sight, searching for the one who would look after Cailee. It was only an unnoticeable moment before he blinked and took a sharp right at the next block he came to, continuing his speech.

"I'm taking you to your temporary guardian and teacher. I'm sure you've seen or met Melanie around before. As your Master is not yet back yet from his Mission, she will have temporary custody over your instruction. I hope there are no objections." He smiled. There were never objections. Sometimes it bothered him that everybody - at least, everybody in the Wizarding community - regarded him as a larger-than-life figure, unable to be denied. At least they could express opinions or something. he admitted, knowing all too well what duties and power his office held. It was occasionally staggering. Shaking his head, he stopped a few blocks away after walking in silence for a time, allowing her ample time to speak.

Halting on a street corner in the section of town known for its bars and other such joints, Philipe turned to Cailee and let go of her shoulder, leaning heavily on his cane as if he actually needed it. "Now, she should be here in a few moments, although she won't be expecting either of us." Glancing around, he produced a small tube made of glass, filled a quarter of the way with blue sand, holding it towards her when he decided nobody was nearby to be nosy. "You where trying to do this, yes?" As the word "yes" left his lips, the sand swirled itself in a miniature tornado, forming the shape flawlessly and lasting until he held it towards her closer, the small particles of sand settling back to the bottom. "I see many an Apprentice rely too heavily on words for their spells. Do not get me wrong; words are excellent learning aids and do help you progress. However, they can be limiting." Lifting her hand and placing the cylinder in it, he smiled encouragingly. "Try it again, but this time, don't just say the word. Feel it. When you say 'wind'—that is the word you used?—think of it as if the Air itself is flowing through you, from your center, down your arm and into the vial. Shape the sand with your mind; tell it exactly what you want it to do without using any other word but 'wind'." He stepped back slightly, giving her room to try. He took another glance around, smirking mischievously as if it was a fun game. "Quickly now, before somebody comes."

When William thanked her before he started digging in, Alyssa smiled just slightly. "Y'welcome." Her attention was directed elsewhere when s'mores were once again mentioned, though, and she turned to the other girl. Artesia had mentioned that someone needed them, too, so she glanced once over at their den mother. "Sure I can. I'll just take off early so I can go shopping. After you guys leave, there are only a few people who come. The other girls can take care of them without me." Her boss might not be happy, but if she made up some story that something had come up with her family and that she absolutely had to leave, it really wouldn't be a lie. The Pack was like family, after all.

Alyssa started to pick up Marco's cup but thought better of it. She'd had another idea. "Sure, Marco. Just a minute." Turning, she hurried off to the kitchen while they talked about hot dogs. They had a few coffee makers, so this one wouldn't be terribly missed. She picked up the coffee pot, still over half full with the stuff, and went back into the restaurant. "There." She set it down in the middle of their table. "Now you can have all you like. And don't worry." She smiled, her tone mildly teasing. "I'll remember how much you owe me."

Malcolm smiled. "That would be very good. Ange doesn't need a brand-new computer, just something that she can do homework on. I think it rather suspicious that she needs to go to the library every day for two weeks, especially since she's the responsible one. Heck, I was fifteen once. That had to be the most hormone-driven year of my life." The wizard stopped to catch his breath, and then added, "That was also the wildest year. Did any and everything. Didn't help that that was the year I found out I was a wizard." He turned to his companion and asked, "So, where to?" before getting a feeling akin to walking into a brick wall. "Whoa," he said, feeling the effect though he continued to walk normally. "I guess we know who's out and about tonight." There was no need to answer; most of the supernatural world could recognize it. The Merlin was lurking in the area.

Melanie nodded absently, agreeing with his reasoning silently. "You shouldn't bet on it being a total success, though. Computers might still fry. There's only a chance that I'll get the darn thing to work." At the mention of his fifteenth year, she glowered at him out of her corner of her eye. "You know, you really didn't need to tell me that. I could have done without the mental image." She sighed, returning her attention to the patrol. She noticed the Merlin's magical aura in nearly the same instant, but she answered his question anyway. They'd be catching up to the old man soon, most likely. "No where in particular, really. Just wandering around both sides of town and then patrolling the border a bit. We're still on the leech side." He probably knew that, though, so she skipped on without further comment. "Yeah, he's not exactly subtle, is he? Not always, anyway. I don't think he's very far away." Not that squinting would help her eyesight, but she tried anyway. That might be him on the corner a ways up ahead, but she couldn't be sure. And if it was the Merlin, who was that with him?

It was not strange sight to see Devin wandering the street. The diminutive wizard did so often, although not entirely intentionally. Every day some errand required her to walk around (since driving for her could be catastrophic) and while the outings themselves are short, or would be done properly, Devin lacked many skills necessary. Easily distracted by scenery and lacking a sense of direction, it was not uncommon to find her wandering around aimlessly, a note clutched in her hands giving some clue as to what she should be doing.

Today was no different.

Staring up at the sky, hands gripping a grocery list the new caretaker of the house had given her, she plowed right into the pair- or would if they didn't move quickly. Her eyes directed at some distant heavenly spot, she was running (not walking, which might be somewhat sensible) blindly down the sidewalk. Mind lost in a place as distant as the clouds, she was completely oblivious to where she was running or even that she was. It was pure luck that she wasn't on a collision course with the Merlin or a car in the middle of the road.

It was not too awful of a day to run into Devin. She still looked far from female, but her hair looked as if it had been washed the day before and her clothes were only slightly wrinkled. The green and brown argyle short-sleeved knit top could be concealing a stain, but the white rumpled shirt underneath seemed to be close to a shade of white. The bulky, clearly-too-large layering was coupled with ripped jeans and gray sneakers that might have started off as a shade of white or black. It wasn't a particularly GOOD day to run into Devin, but it was better than some for certain. Apparently, someone was making her change clothes and shower- or she had suddenly remembered it the day before.

Marco set his burger back down on his plate then reached out to take hold of the pot of coffee that she had brought to him, tipping the contents into his empty mug. Once the black liquid had filled his entire cup now, he set it back down in the center of the table."Thank you but thats not very fair since I usually drink a few cups whenever I'm here,"he said, lassoing his fingers around the handle of the mug. The light steam that was coming off the surface of the liquid warned him that it was still hot, pressing his lips against it. He tipped it up some to allow a certain amount fill his mouth until he couldn't fill it any more. It was hot, that much was certain before he too a drink, but it was tasty so he didn't mind the small scorching pain on his tongue. He placed his mug back on the table in front of his plate so it was still within reach if he was thristy again.

Taking back hold of the hamburger which was now three quarter's done, he took another large bite from it while slurping up an onion that got pulled away when he moved the burger back some. It was an overall delicious meal that had surprisingly filled his stomach to the point a good burp would make him feel better. He let out a soft one with his mouth closed then released it by breathing out of his nose, acting like it never happened. With only a small portion of the hamburger left, Marco placed the entire bite into his mouth to finish it off once and for all. He wiped his mouth off with the back of his hand like before, bringing his right elbow up to lean against it while he stared down at his plate. All that was left were a few crumbs and a couple of fries which he boredly picked up one at a time to stick in his mouth."I would say my compliments to the chef but he probably to worry about his customers getting sick,"he said smiling a little bit, finishing the last few fries he had left. Everything hit the spot, he was now full for the time being. No telling when he would want to eat again but he guessed that it would probably be later at the bonfire, shoveling down s'mores.

Rourke expected no less from Alastar, his offer to walk with them past the wolves’ hang out was automatic and Rourke would have offered the same. He would not have refused anyway as Alastar would still have come. The wolves were not stupid, however, so he doubted there was need to call out the infantry. Though, if they were that dense they would just as easily follow the vampires somewhere less conspicuous.

Madeline. Rourke’s lips quirked up at the corners at the woman’s name. He had long since given up on keeping track of Alastar’s playthings; it was too tedious a job, called for long house and the list was simply too long. Every name he heard was like hearing it for the first time. Sure Rourke had had his fair share of women in his earlier decades. He would not deny it and he had enjoyed it, unlike Alastar, however, they had always been one at a time. Rourke had liked to pace himself, until Alette then there was no need to bother. He did admire Alaster’s prowess and zest for the life he lived, the way he embraced the many things that defined the vampire general. He alone could do it so well.

Many times Alastar was his own one-man show, Rourke was not one for boisterous fits of laughter but he enjoyed watching and listening to his brother just as much as anyone. Thankfully, the man didn’t require a response, Rourke could not have managed a coherent one as he watched Alastar’s act, like a small theatrical whirlwind. He was certain the doors shook in their frames. It was a miracle they did not quiver violently and fall right off, or burst into a shower of waxed wooden splinters as though devastated by spontaneous combustion. Rourke waited a heartbeat; it had to be coming. In the barrage of dramatics Alette seemed to have managed a few words, that was more than he had done, bless her. He did laugh now as Alastar left none too quietly, “Beware, this way our general comes.”

He turned now to his wife, taking the opportunity to grasp her outstretched hand. He laced his fingers with hers and kissed their joined fingers, “In my world you’re very much Cinderella, my Cinderella; elegant and most lovely. I’ll take it upon myself to find glass slippers good enough for you.” He gave her hand a gently squeeze as he bent at the waist in an impromptu bow. Brown eyes peeked from under smiling warmly, “After you, we have to warn the masses my brother is on the loose then continue with the rest of our itinerary.”

Alastar paused halfway down the stairs before he realized that his brother and his mistress were loitering in the bedroom still. Clearing his voice loudly, as if suddenly he was the one in authority, he called out to them, "You did mean to go out this century right?." Well, hopefully the paternal scolding would make them move a few feet in the right direction. Honestly, it was like these kids intended to flirt until the sun came out.

"If I miss seeing the sour-faced puppy because of you two, I'll never forgive you!" This was, of course, untrue. Alastar wasn't in the business of holding grudges. Fierce as he could be in battle, mistakes and mishaps were forgiven the moment it was over. It was even harder to imagine him being angry at Rourke for any period of time to whom he was so bizarrely close.

The 'puppy' of which he spoke was none other than Marco. Although Alastar knew the names of the three leaders, he felt a certain amount of competition against the werewolf beta. As they were of the same rank in the organizations, he found no end to his amusement by comparing himself to his equal. All the times that they had encountered one another outside of a combat situation they seemed so diametrically opposed it amazed him. For a while, now, it had been a small obsession to observe the werewolf for more completely opposing behaviors... at a safe distance, of course.

All of the steak was cut into pieces before a single bite was consumed. Tasha had a habit of doing this, she claimed it released the juices and allowed her to soak back up, as doing it twice made it taste better. She didn't know for certain though, she'd never done it any way. Steak juice oozed into her onion rings, not that she minded any, just as long as it stayed on her plate. The food tasted better than it smelled, as always. Though even partially cooked meat had nothing on the raw stuff. She'd choose a live cow over a cooked one if it didn't cause 'normal folk' to freak out and/or become suspicious.

Never the less, her plate was empty, save a few fried bits of onion and small strips of steak too tough to chew, and half the contents of the coke was left, as she planned. She giggled a bit at Marco compared to William. Obviously, the Alpha was trying to be gentleman like with his eating, but the Beta looked more than half way to the opposite end of the spectrum. Speaking of which, she put the napkin to her mouth, just in case there had been traces of her dinner left around her mouth.

"If you're not careful, you could get addicted to that, Marco." Tasha joked, cupping her left cheek in the respective palm. "I read somewhere that some people get really bad caffeine withdrawals. Cold sweats, shakes, migraines, the whole shi-bang." Like she should be talking. She didn't care to count how long it would take before she had to have a bottle of Coke or something.

Cailee was ashamed, listening to Philipe easily threatening, no, more like warning Kassandra. She couldn't have been that dangerous to her, could she? She even said goodbye before she left. There was no way that Cailee would've returned the favor, but she still felt a little anxious; Would she really see her again? Something inside of Cailee hoped so. Though, there was something that she hoped wouldn't happen more, and as Philipe's hand gently guided her out of the restaurant and into the streets, it seemed that her hopes wouldn't be taken into account.

She knew that the scolding would come sooner or later, and as they walked she became more and more nervous as silence passed. Her face scrunched up slightly, wincing as if his words would hurt her, but they were much less scary than she had believed they would be. Of course, the words were serious and his voice had a measure of intensity in it, but her punishment was barely one to complain about. So, as he finished speaking with a softer tone as if he really were her grandfather, she let out a short sigh, letting out the tenseness in her muscles and the air in her lungs. She truly thought she would be in much more trouble, but she had being an apprentice to thank. Tonight proved to be a good night to be young, that was for sure.

Of course she was holding in some remarks, knowing she shouldn't question the Merlin's rules and thoughts, but she nodded anyways, agreeing to the promise. Cailee's mind, as usual, was swimming with questions and things she would normally say in this situation if it weren't the Merlin she was with. The fact that they kept their magic away from the public eye made her a little confused. Why shouldn't people know about the beings that inhabited their city? If they knew, wouldn't they be able to take extra precautions? And wouldn't it make more sense to show them that they had allies throughout this endeavor? She knew the Merlin was far more advanced intellectual than she was, but as a teenager she always had to question things to know the rights from wrongs. Even though she would never voice these words to the Merlin; maybe if she were a bit older...

As the words 'temporary guardian' passed by Philipe's lips, Cailee immediately looked up at him, her eyebrows drawn together as she frowned in objection, but the look was very short, and she quickly looked back down before he could see too much of it. This night was not the greatest in Cailee's book; having a Master was already frustrating enough, but another person to look after her and tell her what to do? If Cailee could object, she would, but she knew it would do no good for her. She was regretting not going straight home now, what could've been an okay night with her father now turned into a night of her having to patrol with a wizard who's ranking was enough for her to be jealous about.

Then there was silence once more, and even though she was no longer nervous with the thought of being punished, she absolutely hated the silence. The footsteps from their feet and the sound of Philipe's cane hitting the ground were the only noises to listen to as they walked. When they stopped at a corner and the Merlin took out a small vial of blue sand, Cailee watched as it spun inside the glass, exactly what she was trying to show Kassandra earlier. She was struck with both awe and longing as she watched the blue particles easily create a small whirlwind, it was so simple, yet she couldn't even complete such a thing by herself. Before she could say anything, she had taken it in her hands just as he was telling her to try again. Listening to his words, she felt kind of silly, the thought of feeling the air flow through her body sounded a little out there, but if it was what it took, she'd try it.

Taking a small breath, she made believe that the air was passing through her throat and into her lungs, seeping through the the rest of her body, even her arms and legs. The feeling was kind of strange, but she kept going, focusing on the feeling as if it were passing through her fingers and into the vial. The sand blew around a little, with no real shape, and she began to get frustrated. Cailee closed her eyes, imagining the sand twisting into a miniature swirl of blue inside it's glass confinement. Opening her eyes, the picture in her mind had come to life, but quickly fell apart as she smiled with pride. It had only lasted for a mere three seconds at the most, but the improvement was surely comprehensible, and Cailee took it as a step up from her usual failure.

William smiled back at Artesia, letting her expression on her face go as she dug into her food. It seemed that most of his pack had been famished tonight from the way they ate their food. He was hungry too, of course, but for some reason found no reason to rush. He knew enough that he, too, might be having a hot dog or two later tonight, and there was the delicious s'mores to look forward to as well. As he ate, William watched the others eat. He could tell Artesia was in a rush to finish her food, and there was a strong reason for her to do so. But, as he watched Marco, he knew that the way he ate was how he often did, there was no reason by the sloppy form, and a smile formed on his face as he chewed a mouthful of the delightfully tender and flavorful burger. Moving his gaze over to Tasha, he watched her eating ethics with a slight interest. It was slightly amusing to watch her cut the steak into pieces before eating any of it, but he was happy to see someone who was even the slightest bit concerned of what she looked like as she ate. Overall they were an easy source of entertainment as he continued to chew his food.

Although he ate slowly, he had finished his food fairly quickly due to his rather large bites. After taking a drink from his glass, he leaned back into the cushion of the seat, letting his arms spread out over the back of the booth. It was a relaxing night, and he hoped that it would stay that way. It would be very disappointing if his plans for the rest of the evening were spoiled.
