Mel blushed slightly, aware of his look. he had a way of looking at her that always made her feel...warm and fuzzy in the inside. Even though party of her was yelling, indignant at the nerve of him, trying to flirt with her after all he'd made her suffer, she couldn't avoid to smile.
"And some things are left behind with no regrets..." She whispered with a sigh, wondering which of the two had she been for him. "Anyways, tell me, what have you been up to? Aside from bartending at the hottest club around..." She tried to keep the mood light, not wanting to outburst like she had the night before.

"Nothing...my life has been on the boring side since I left school.."
He said softly, sighing slightly at her statement. He had a boring life, quite empty without her. He sighed again as he stared at the coffee.
"What about you...?"
He asked softly, not looking up.

"Oh, don't worry. As far as I see no one is unattended..." He looked around, taking a mental note of the boy talking with Mel. It was the first time he saw her in a male's company.
"And even though your fame does precede you, here we overlook such details. This is supposed to be a small place fit for busy people to relax. A haven from the daily struggle outside." he smiled warmly "Here, you can leave your persona with your jacket by the doorway, and just be yourself. That's our ideal." That was, at least, his dream. The small Cafe was a place he had learned to love.
"Limelight...I've only heard about that place. Not my kind of hangout, by far." He looked at his colleague again "That would explain the tiredness she bears today." He said that absentmindedly, like she wasn't really there. Then, his gaze fell upon her once more "But one must make sacrifices for his job, whether it is a passion or just a means to an end" He bowed slightly, blinking his eyes in a slow, handsome manner.

Namine was glad he didnt have to leave right away. It was nice to enjoy someones company who wasn't out to use her for her image. That is why she had Demeter, he loved her unconditionally. "I must admit Leo Demeter pointed me to this place. As soon as I saw it I felt drawn to it. Once inside I realized it felt like home..cozy and warm with delicious smells floating in the air. I couldn't wish for anything more" she said almost wistfully "Except good company that is. Heres to you and Melissa." Namine raised her cup and took a sip. The warmth of the drink seemed to spread through out reddening her cheeks. She cupped the mug in her hand her wine lacquered nails matching the shade of her hair. "Maybe sometime we'll have a sit down and you can tell me about yourself over coffee." Namine thought hes a nice guy.

"I'm sorry to hear that." She truly was. She remembered his dreams of going to college with a Football scholarship, of finding out somewhere, somehow, something he would truly enjoy doing.
Taking a sip of her delicious hot cappuccino, the girl looked at the young man in front of her. So much youth, so much life...and yet, so much pain and faded memories.
"Well...life just caught up with me, somehow." She sighed "After I took my major, I was hoping for a shiny future, maybe in some corporate company...traveling around the world doing what I do best...but then, my father fell ill, and he had no one else, so he asked me to stay here, taking care of the Cafe." She looked around "He always loved this place. He met my mother here, he raised me under these tables. He found here the money to put me through school. You know I had always found this place to be a little too quaint, but I couldn't say no to him...he said he hoped I would learn about people here, as I had learned about computers at school. At first I didn't understand, but now, I think I'm starting to." She let her gaze slide over the tables, the counter, the happy and the sad looking patrons. All the emotions, all the lives. Yes, she was beginning to understand.

"Well then," The boy stated with a serious tone, nodding at her toast pleasantly, before crouching to stare straight at the dog's eyes "I apologize, my dear Demeter, for ever thinking badly of you! I can see now, there is more to you than meets the eye. My mistake, and I am sorry." He bowed his head at the big, lazy animal, a small smile still floating on his lips "And I must thank you for bringing such an exquisite person to our little place!"
He looked at Namine again "I do wish you can always find home among us. We are truly honored by yours - and Demeter's - presence." He grinned widely at the girl "And I would enjoy very much having such a conversation with you! Now, I fear duty is calling..." He motioned to the new customers arriving "I will leave you to finish your meal. And don't forget, whenever you need some peace, here you will always find kind food and sweet words. Or is it the other way around?" With a final wink, the boy dismissed himself from the table, thinking inwardly never to be bothered by a dog again.

"Good old Mel..still so smart.."
He said with a small smile as he continued to stare at the coffee. He wanted to tell her just to get it over with but he was afraid of her reaction. Would she be the same way or would she have left that behind. Of course he still loved her, otherwise going there would have only been a gesture of courtesy. He remembered how much she loved computers, how much she loved knowledge, how she used to state intelligent things and he wouldn't understand for she was so smart. He felt tears welling up but he kept his head down, still staring at the coffee.

Namine watched him go. Truly marvelous this place she had come across. "I guess I should be thanking you as well demeter." He replied with a wag of his tail. She got comfortable feeling her body unwinding. It was magical how this place made you forget the outside world and focus on the here and now. She sipped her cappucino between bites of the tiramisu. Her eyes travailed the cafe noting everyone in it and the aura they exuded. She would most definetely find her way back here. "Well Demeter as soon as we finish here lets go get that book I wanted." Demeter just looked at her with understanding eyes. Leaning down she whispered "I love you darling.." and he rose on his haunches for his owner to pet. Namine obliged and got ready to head out.

Mel looked sadly at him. She was smart, maybe, but still she hadn't had the strength to fulfill her dreams. "And maybe that's the way it should be..." She sighed. Her time at college had been cold and lonely; people there were all brains but no heart.
Now, in the small Cafe, she was starting to find her own heart again, only it was still hurt and bruised. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't be rational about Nate. There were too many feelings, too many unanswered questions. Gathering up her breath and her courage, she spoke slowly, in a low tone.
"Tell, me Nate...why did you leave me behind? Why didn't you so much as say goodbye? Was I really just a high school crush, as some wanted me to believe?" The words were hard on her, but she forced herself to speak them. She remembered Elizabeth disdainful eyes and cold, hurting words. She had been the one who told her he had moved. She had humiliated her, made her strongest, deepest love look like a one-night-stand. She couldn't stand the doubt, the awful possibility she had been right.

"I wanted to save you the heartbreak...I wanted to make it hurt less for you but I see that it was a stupid decision...Mel, you weren't just a high school crush, you were my love. I loved and still do love you...I just wanted to prevent breaking your heart as much as possible..."
He said, looking up at her, now that he had confessed that he still loved her he wasn't sure how she would react. Some tears had fallen from his eyes but he did his best to coceal them.

The girl took a few moments to understand what Nate had just said. To spare her the heartbreak...it sounded just like the kind of impetuous, well-meant yet badly considered thing the boy would do. She sighed.
His words made her heart ache in a twirl of both pleasure and pain. Did she still love him? She wasn't sure. She had tried so hard, for so long, to hate him, to forget him, yet she realized his image was always there, anywhere she turned.

Her rational part told her too much time had gone by; they didn't know each other anymore. The side of her that still hurt told her to slap him, to hurt him, to hate and despise him. Yet, the more sensible part of her, the silent, king voice in her heart, remembered all the good times they had spent together, and the comfort she still found in his eyes. Time could have passed, but their hearts remained the same.

Struggling to find the words to express even a little bit of what she felt, Mel didn't notice Leo approach the table. Silently, the boy picked up the now empty mugs, and looked at her. He was curious, and a tad worried, but he wouldn't pry.
His sudden presence woke the girl up from her wondering state. Feeling glad for the small interruption that gave her some more time to think, she smiled at the green-eyed young man.

"So, did you get a new date already?" Her voice was mocking, yet joyful.
"Oh, no, I wouldn't break your heart like that!" He chuckled; they played those innocent games ever since they had first met and become friends "But I think I got us a new customer!"
"Dog and all?" She asked, surprised.
"He isn't that bad, you know?" seeing her incredulous look, he laughed "You know me, I boil in little water but deep down I'm a softie."
"And besides, she is gorgeous." Mel stated, matter-of-factly, in a motherly voice.
"No arguments here..." Smiling and messing up her hair, the boy picked up the tray and left, leaving Mel once again facing Nate and all her doubts and concerns.

Nate awaited Mel's reaction Thinking it would be a negative one for a lot of time had passed by. He knew for a fact that he still loved her, not the fact that he felt bad about breaking her heart, not because he hated himself for it but because of genuine love. He didn't look up at Leo, his eyes were set on the table as he continued awaiting Mel's reaction. Her response, would it be harsh and cold or would it be warm and soft as was the way she had always reacted to these things.

((Mel and Nate are talking at Mel's cafe, Leo is also there and Namine is leaving (or just left). I don't know about the others.))

Mel sighed softly. She didn't like to feel at lack of things to say. She always had everything under control, she always rationalized everything, weighed the pros and cons, and chose the wise move.
Always, except when Nate was concerned. The boy had been the first one to make her act based on her heart instead of her mind, a long time ago. He had swept her off her feet and made her happier than she ever thought she could be. But then, he had betrayed her trust. She couldn't help it but to be scared.

Looking at his eyes, she could see he was being true. And that scared her, also. But she also felt a small, warm tinge on her heart. There was no point in denying she had never forgot him; just his eyes and his presence made her shiver.
But there were no words, nothing she could say, that could convey the feeling of fear and love that overwhelmed her senses...She had trusted him once, but she wasn't sure she could trust him again. Slowly, still struggling with the words and thoughts, she raised her hand to hold his, over the table. His touch was warm, strong and soft, as she remembered. Her hand was trembling slightly, but she didn't care to hide that. Gazing him, she hoped her eyes showed all she couldn't say. That she still wanted him...that she feared him, too.

Namine got up from the table and left a generous amount of money for the food and for the nice people she had met, Leo and Melissa. She knew that this would become a place she frequented often. "Well Demeter my dear let's go to the bookstore. Only this time I fear I will have to leave you outside." Namine picked up her coat and put it on, she then lowered shades over her eyes. She turned once in the direction of Mel and Leo waving goodbye. She left the small cafe with a smile on her face. The warmth and homey feeling she had received still withing her. With Demeter at her side Namine made her way to the bookstore.

Nate stared back into her eyes, the eyes of the beautiful girl he had fallen for. He held her hand gently yet firm. He remembered the softness of her hands, the tenderness in which she held things. In her eyes he saw compassion, yet fear. He sighed a little and looked down, not wanting to see the fear that she had felt for hm, the fear that he would emotionally tear her apart once more. He looked up for another little while but couldn't hold the gaze. His eyes fell once more but he held her hand as he always did, not wanting to let go.
