Plus you have the psycological effect of having 17 tanks on your side of the feild. Your opponet is gonna wet his pants when he sees all that. He wont know which one to shoot for first. twisted

rolleyes Unless of course, your opponent is Iron Warriors, Necrons or Tau. In which case he'll dance for joy and smear your tanks all over the board in an orgy of glancing attacks or high Str fire.
Thats why you sont letem have a chance. Bombard em from afar & drop out your Stormtroopers & other guys who can run up & get in their faces
yeah, what you want to do is have some hadened veterans with meltaguns rushed behind enemy lines in the quickest route possible (with your vehicles, your doctrines, or whatever)

Is there any mention of tau warriors being a first pick. A starter group of two tau warrior teams and an XV-8 commander was all i needed to start kicking a**. My brother is a follower of black templar marines, and he always lost to me because of my impressive firepower and his difficulty in ripping through tau armor, let alone trying to tackle a lone XV8 battlesuit armed with armor penetrating and long ranged weapons. Granted,my guys weren't as accurate at shooting, but both main trooper weapons required a 3+ to wound the enemy. (pulse vs marine, bolter vs tau) He couldn't get close to me for close quarters until he got his tanks, which was four months after we started. After four months, he already had twenty marines, a commander, a dreadnought, a landspeeder, and a destructor class predator. I had a command XV8 with drones, two Xv8 teams, twenty four firewarriors, six stealth suits, and four pathfinders with devilfish at that time. After that, all out tau vs marine fights started to get quite rough, with us barely having anything left to fight with by battles end.

I statred as the Tau but found them too static, you just sort of point and shoot. They were fun to play in their own way though. Maybe when the new ones ceom out....

I would like to point out that, through experience, in small battles the Tau seem to consistantly fare better, due mostly to the fact that Marines are not very mobile unless you've got the points to spend on transports or jump troops AFTER you met your cumpulsory choices. There are other factors too.

I have to agree. In combat patrols and other games of less than 1000 points, Tau are great. At 1500 points and greater, the Tau advantage falls off sharply. The real advantage with Tau is that you can cram alot of stuff in a list. I can fit 3 Hammerheads into 1000 points. The downside is that at higher points values, there's nothing more I can put in there to make a list better, because I've already got all the really good stuff in there, so there's just more dead weight to add on.

the real thing about the tau is that they fight as a single unit. when they focus their firepower against enemy infantly, the enemy will fall quickly. However, they don't perform as well if they are forced to split up their targets. also, I would recommend a full team of broadsides for a heavy choice with two hammerheads instead of three hammerheads, considering their long range firepower can fell a tank with ease if not pick off three enemy soldiers per turn. my xv88 units utilize shield generators as well, to help protect them from fools using lascannons and the like against them. with that kind of combo, they become quite hard to take out unless the enemy tries to blast them with everything they have. trust me on that, i've used them for nearly two and a half years, maybe three....

You've got a good point, and I'd just like to know what you think of stealth suits as an 'interference tactic' to use against approaching troops.

Tht's very true. Because SM are quite pricy points-wise, it is difficult to field everything you need with less than 1000 points and to be very effective. Marines are durable, I'll give them that, but against Tau weaponry and mobility, Marines need points to make them a mixed threat of range and melee that can close distance quickly. There are a lot of points of view on this.

On a side note, in larger games (1000-2000+) the Tau sometimes remain effective, but it often depends on factors such as attacker/defender, terrain, the SM Chapter, etc. I have a good friend who plays Tau now, and he always puts up a good fight in higher points games, sometimes even beating me. Though he does always seem to decimate me in lower point value games. *sigh*

I use a full team of stealth warriors equipped with a shield drone. Primarily, they have been useful in stalling light infantry, as they only need to get within 18 inches then back off after firing. their cloaks I must say are mildly effective against enemy forces, but that deteriorates when we get close enough to fire. So far, they have always bought me time against infantry, unless I deep strike them to slam a vehicle's rear armor or the enemy decides to annihilate the team. On a side note, a stealth suit assisted in eliminating the last of my brothers terminators in close quarters after losing the whole team and recieving melee support from a three man team of bonded fire warriors and my origional four pathfinders.

How is that one Shield Drone even useful? With the Drones being forced to follow the Mixed Armor rules, you won't ever be able to make use of it, even when there's only one Stealth Suit and the Drone left, because if it's tied, then the worse save is assumed to be in the majority, and against lascannon, the worse save is no save, I.E. the single Stealth.

In any case, I've learned to be very careful with Deep Striking. I hardly ever Deep Strike into my opponents lines anymore, because every time I get agressive like that, it backfires. Especially with Stealth Suits, as thier advantage is that they can't be hit at long range and mid-range shots are iffy. Oh, and I happen to think that the Stealth Suits are one of the best CC units the Tau have, aside from HQ choices. 2 attacks apiece at S4, and they hit first when charged. Not great compared to other armies' assaulters, but they shine compared to the other Tau units.

Normally, teh mixed armor rule would win out for the suits, but that would overrule another rule. with the Tau gun/shiled drones, they always intercept incoming shots before anyone from the team is hit. In this fashion, if someone uses an armor penetrating round against by team with a series of regular weapons, the drone would intercept a round of my choice while the others get hit. Although the drones will always try to intercept incoming rounds, it cannot intercept attacks that go after an individual target, namely an eldar mind war or a vindicar's exodus rifle. In this sense, the gun drones ignore the mixed armor rule.

As for close quarters, I just try to avoid it, especially against marines. Their combat ability in melee isn't as good, so they're more likely to miss a strike.

Not keeping up with the rules are you? It's been FAQ'ed by GW. Drones are currently subject to Mixed Armor and Majority Toughness. As 4th Edition rules override 3rd Edition codexes where applicable, the "Drones intercepting shots" thing in our codex is currently worth diddly squat. Don't rail against me, I'm a Tau player too. In any case, it'll only inconvienice you for another 4 months or so. Rumor has it that the Shield Drones will be fixed in the new codex in February, and the rules I've heard mentioned for it sound nice indeed.

As for Tau staying out of CC, that's a no brainer. I was just mentioning that Stealth Suits are the ones most likely to survive if they get assaulted, because of thier "always in cover" ability, 3+ save, and natural 2 attacks.
