Hi peoples . . . I was wondering, what would be the easiest instrument to switch from french horn to? Because I'm just in 8th grade and we don't have a marching band, but there will be one next year in high school that I definitely want to join . . . but I don't think I really want to play mellophone in marching band. Not that I dislike it or anything, I just think it would be fun to play something new. So basically my 2 questions are:
1. How common is it for someone who plays french horn in concert band to play something other than mellophone in marching band?
2. What would be a good instrument to switch to? (And I pretty much know I can't play trombone, baritone, or tuba (or their marching band equivalents, I don't know much about marching band yet) so please don't suggest that.)

There aren't many at my school who play something other than a melphone during marching season and a french horn during concert season. But my suggestion for an instrument to switch to would be the trumpet. It was easy for me to switch when we had a shortage of trumpets for marching season one year, they have pretty much the same fingerings as the melophone. :3 Hope this helps! ~Foxey

I agree. Although I would avoid it at all costs unless you absolutely have to switch. Go with trumpet. It's as close to a mello as it can get. Either that or a fluegal horn.
...And I definately spelled that wrong.

Hello everyone!
I graduated from high school back in 1999, but played French Horn in our concert ensemble and mellophone for parts of our marching band performances. My senior year, I even sat first chair for our concert band.

Evil_Queen_of_Hearts French horns rule. But about swithcing instruments. My teacher says if you can play French Horn you can play any brass instrument. People say that a lot. The truth of that statement is pretty much that the French Horn has the smallest mouthpiece of all the brass instruments, making it more difficult to learn. A double-sided French Horn can be quite a challenge, but worth the effort to play!

So I use the century-old French horn at my school. You know the one that one with the fist-sized dents... Too poor for one of my own. redface Anyways, the case is evidently two centuries old. It hates me and refuses to stay close. I told my band director today, and he's all like, "Has it fallen out?" gonk Me, "Uh..." surprised
Don't get me wrong, it really wasn't my fault... eek
I'm kinda at a loss at what to do about it. Any ideas?
*Fearfully anticipates "OMG YOUR HORN FELL OUT" flames xp *

I know how you feel. My horn is older than hell and crappier than a Mexican prison (no offense). And the case was broken. I fixed it with duct tape. Duct tape fixes EVERYTHING. biggrin
