Earendil chuckled as he made his way up the stairs. "I would comment on the food, but I know that's not what you're asking about," he grinned. "I think it went very well. Aerin is obviously quite comfortable in her new position. Actually, she reminds me a lot of Ninako - she applies herself in every way to being Queen of her country, but she's still a person. And I still think Aethos is just plain lost in all of it. He doesn't realize that it's all right for a ruler to be a normal person."

"He certainly seemed a bit bemused when Aerin began to converse with Miyuki, though I think Miyuki enjoyed it."

She smiled, by this point Miyuki was already out like light, didn't even make it to her bed.

"You know Aethos was also lost as to how to interact with children..."

"Maybe all he needs is a wife," Earendil quipped, still holding Miyuki to himself. "Like how Uncle Elrohir changed completely when he met Haradhel."

That still amused him, even now that his uncle was a great-grandfather.

Lin stuck out her tongue at him, "Your uncle was different, he wasn't socially stunted. A bit uptight yes, but otherwise quite normal."

Which was a sad thing to say about how Elrohir use to be, but it was true.

"And overprotective..." she added as an afterthought remembering some of the stories she heard after she got older.

"I beg to differ," Earendil grinned. "While I do admit, Aethos is completely socially inept, Uncle Elrohir wasn't much better - and he had a better upbringing, I know for certain."

He opened the door to Lin's bedroom and headed in, still carrying Miyuki. "Either way, someone has to get into Aethos's head and show him what's what. Someone who isn't afraid of him."

"You won't find that someone here," Lin replied, "Everyone here is scared of him, well with the exception of a handful of people."

She looked at Miyuki, she would probably bath the girl in the morning otherwise it would be a bother to wake her up now. Lin went ahead of Earendil and pulled the bed sheet cover off so he could lay her down.

"There's got to be someone who isn't afraid of him," Earendil puzzled as he set Miyuki gently on the bed. He kissed her forehead, then stood up and took a step back to give Lin room to tuck her in. "I mean ... of the entire nation, there isn't one person who isn't afraid of him?"

Though maybe this was one thing that taking him to another country would help.

"They live all in one city, I bet news travels fast and judging by people's reactions to him so far... Aethos' reputation, whatever it is has preceded him. Which kind of makes me worried about what his reputation is..."

She scratched the back of her head thoughtfully.

"I mean, we both agree he's been nothing but what his father wanted him to be, but the question becomes what did his father want of him? I mean, who was 'Aethos-sola'?"

Earendil shrugged and started back towards the door. With Miyuki asleep, he wasn't worried about leaving her alone. "I have no idea," he admitted. "I suppose we could ask Aerin or Alena ... I mean, it's clear that Aerannel wanted Aethos to be like him: not care about the people, not think about what's best for them; just have a system that works for him, and forget about the rest."

Lin nodded slowly, it did seem that way, but there was something else to it. Something she couldn't quite put her finger on that tied into Aethos inability to interact with people.

"It doesn't help that everything one does needs a reason," she followed Earendil taking his hand tightly.

She looked up at Earendil, it occurred to her that Aethos might have not seen anything wrong in the mere fact his father had control over who married and who did not because he wouldn't have been able to understand something illogical as love. Lin had been incredibly lucky, the clans had moved past old ways and simply deemed marrying for love as good luck for allies, good luck for children and just over all a good sign.

"I'll admit about half way through our trip through the city I wanted to whack him if he asked why one more time."

Earendil chuckled and squeezed Lin's hand back. "Yes, well. Patience is a virtue, after all."

He wasn't sure where they were going or if they even had a particular destination, so he was just kind of wandering and letting Lin lead.

"Still," he smiled, "I think he eventually got the idea that pleasure is important in life. I'm not going to hold my breath, but I think we may have made a bit of progress with him today."

He hesitated, then added, "There's a part of me that wants to have a talk with the former king, as well. Just to ask him what was wrong with his head when he was reigning."

"Do you even think he's aware he did anything wrong, or that he'll even admit he did anything wrong?" Lin asked Earendil.

She did not want him to go down there and talk to a man who potentially was like a bomb waiting to go off. Even though she didn't know the personal strength of the man (it mustn't be too great by now).

"What if he is really mad? You can't talk sense to a mad person."

Granted mad, like all diseases wasn't something she had thought possible in an elf. Elves did not get sick, and she has assumed certainly not sick in the head.

"He probably justifies everything he ever did," Earendil replied simply. "That's what's so scary. He probably required a reason for everything - Aethos does, after all, and he probably learned that from his father."

He shrugged. "And if he is mad ... well, it's not as if we've got hopes in going to talk to him, do we? In a case like that, then at least we have our answer."

Earendil did have a point in all of that, that was probably why Aethos did that. She nodded at this.

"At least we do... at least this place can move on."

A slow smile spread over Earendil's face, and he nodded at Lin's words.

"Yes," he murmured, "you're right. This place is moving on ... and at a very good pace. It almost feels as if the people were waiting for this to happen ... as if they were waiting for their first opportunity to rise against their king without fear. They're so free now, and so happy ..."
