Eep! You guys are making me nervous about having a shower! I'm new here, so this (intro thread aside) seems as good a place as any to start posting. I'm a little over 20 weeks. We just found out last week that we're having a boy. Which is good, because my husband really wanted a boy, and I've heard that they're generally easier than girls. I'm due on October 28th. This is our first.
I'm pretty nervous about being a parent, because I'm really not a very patient person when it comes to kids. I never really wanted to have kids at all (my husband wanted one, but was ok with me not wanting any). I'm just so worried that I'm gonna screw it up. sweatdrop

Tinnumir, baby showers aren't too bad. Well at least mine weren't. I had two. The one my family threw we really didn't do any games but we had people fill out their addresses on thank you cards and had a little drawing for prizes. The one my in-laws held we played a bingo type game. People got a blank bingo card and they filled in what baby items they thought I would recieve. As I opened gifts they had stickers to mark off whatever ones they had correct. Those who got a "bingo" won a little prize. It ended up being a really fun game and we are playing it at my SIL baby shower in a couple weeks.
I also saw in your intro you are in Ohio...so am I! Though originally from Cleveland I now live in Tiffin which is about 2 hours north of you. I do go down to the Columbus area quite a bit because both my SILs live in Delaware. biggrin

The bingo game sounds kind of fun. At my wedding shower, we didn't play any games, so maybe I'll be able to get away with that at my baby shower, too. I'd be fine with just cake, ice cream, and gifts!

The baby shower games I've seen include:
Guessing how much toilet paper will fit around the pregnant tummy (I won one soon after I'd been pregnant because I remembered I'd been 10 squares of toilet paper, and she was too!)
Everybody getting a napkin folded up like a diaper and pinned with a safety pin and the person who opens theirs to find a raisin inside wins a prize
One kind of like Pirate Dirge's with the bracelets only they used clothes pins and whoever collected the most clothes pins by the end for catching other people saying 'baby' would win a prize
And then two that have nothing to do with babies:
Filling a big bowl with uncooked rice and safety pins and then having each person blindfolded try to pull out as many safety pins from the rice as they can in 1 minute (it's harder than it sounds, but fun!)
And one I don't like because it can be humiliating, where you pile a bunch of cotton balls on a baby blanket on the floor, then a person kneeling in front of it blindfolded uses big serving spoon to try to scoop as many cotton balls as they can into a bowl held over their head within a certain time limit, and this one is hard because the cotton balls weigh nothing and most of the time you're scooping nothing and everybody is laughing!
That bingo card one sounds fun!! Maybe I should mention that for mine coming up..

Awww, I love some of these games smile My hubby wants to throw less of a baby shower, since it's a 2nd baby, but a baby celebration. Of course, you need the prerequisite cake, but I love some of the ideas I've read here! And of course, if we're throwing it ourselves, no baby food games in sight!

Pirate Dirge eek We did games at my shower and none of them were humiliating for me. We were thinking about measuring my belly and having people guess the measurement but that was the worst one. We did word games mostly--word scrambles, baby animal names, and then the 'baby' game where everyone started with one bracelet and if you said the word 'baby' and were caught, the other person would take your bracelet. crying I really wanted a couples shower...maybe with number two in the near-ish future I can have one. I wish I could have some sort of shower that was either couples or orientated around my husband. I love baby stuff and everything but he's the one who gets all super excited about them. Not in front of other people, mind you, but when it's just me and him if I just pull out a new onesie he's all like "AAAAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!!" and just loves all the cute baby stuff we get for presents. Then again he's been told since he was like 15 that he couldn't have kids. And he did a lot of (very stupid) fooling around protection-free for years, and nothing ever came of it. Heck, when we were going steady, we had protection-free sex for two years before we got married. Then two months after we got married I got pregnant. it was Pretty Damn Shocking. We're both thrilled though. But I mean he thought he wouldn't be able to have kids years longer than I did. So it's such a miracle for him. Well, for both of us, but you know what I mean.

The game that they did at my shower was putting the name of a famous person on a post-it and then putting it on the guests backs. Then they had to ask questions to the other guests about their 'identity', but they could only ask 'yes or no' questions.
I think most people forgot we had the post-its on our backs in the end! I didn't want any games at all, but I gave in to keep my aunt-in-law and mother-in-law happy. Anything more than this game though, and I'd have probably felt very uncomfortable.

8 weeks to go! I'm having problems breathing now, feels like he's right up in my ribs. Going for a checkup tomorrow and going to ask the doctor what I can do to help myself not feel as breathless.

I'm having my first, but I've never even been to a baby shower...
I don't have many girlfriends, either.

RaiRai, there's probably not much that can be done about the breathless feeling. Once the baby drops it gets better.

Rai Rai, like Ritza said, it probably won't be any better until he drops but then he is back on your bladder and it's back to peeing every 2 minutes! gonk At least that is what happened to me with Ethan!

LOL, I've been breathless for the past couple days too, but I think it's just cause I've been running around like a nutcase!
Although, we took Elly to the carnival the other night, and she had a blast smile

kmaritza RaiRai, there's probably not much that can be done about the breathless feeling. Once the baby drops it gets better. I sure hope so! Doc recommended massage so hubby has to help me out with that.

I'm waiting for a call from a nurse about my leg cramp I've had for 3 days. I researched and calve cramps are common. Mine happened in my sleep and I've tried swimming to ease it, but it got worse today.
And I have another ultrasound scan in 2 weeks. 'Poor fetal growth'. Bleh. There goes all my money! I wish the US had some kind of NHS scheme.

I had my first ob appointment today-lots of the usual poking and prodding. We did get to see the little one via ultrasound today which was neat.
RaiRai, I had bad charley horses when I was pregnant with Zoe. I got them in my calves and in my feet, usually when I was sleeping. They were very, very painful. I hope your muscles cramps go away soon. I know they are not fun.

Ooooh, I got awful charley horses too, what helped me was hot baths, but now that it's 98 out, I guess that might be a bit too uncomfortable for you sad

I got those cramps BAD both pregnancies. Always when you're asleep too! gonk
The stretch I found that helped ease them is standing up, extend your foot, pull your toes towards your knees. I also spoke with my OB at the time, which may vary, but she told me to add more bananas/calcium in my diet and make sure I'm not getting too much sodium or making sure I'm getting hydrated in the heat.
