Mala explained, offering her brother a quick hug before turning about to continue the journey ahead of Van and Riley so that they couldn't catch glimpse of her face.

((Aw man...That would've been the perfect set up for Riley to ask where babies come from, but I'm not that drama-killingly cruel. xd ))

"We were very poor and it was during a famine. Father starved to death and mother thought that living as a free-roam prostitute would pay better than being a proper mother. So...she abandoned us in the middle of the night." Mala answered bluntly, deciding not to censor out anything horrible she had to say about their parents. "I was barely a teenager at the time, so it was difficult finding work. I got a job as a low-wage laborer for awhile, which is why I often came home with various injuries."

"...Oh...okay..." was all Riley said before a depressing silence filled the air.
It even managed to get Van to stay quiet for once. He was mortal once, he had to have had a family at some point, but he couldn't remember anything before godhood. He just kept looking out at the horizon, letting the siblings have their moment.

Mala soon grew uncomfortable with the silence and attempted to break it. "You're the only family I've got. Now you know why. Well, that, plus it's not like I can ever expect to have kids." she said, laughing softly to herself. She wondered how the other two would take her words. She didn't exactly state it, but she wasn't putting herself down with the last comment. Mala was simply infertile.

Van sighed, starting to get a little fed up with the uncomfortable silence. "Don't be so gloomy that you're all the other one's got left, just be glad you still have each other at all..." he said scratching the tip of his nose a bit as he kept looking off away from them. "I swear, when did I become the motivational speaker of this little group?"

{I actually had that planned out for awhile now. biggrin At first, I was going to allude to her probably not being a virgin - but that didn't fit since Atius is the "God of Fertility". So, it made more sense if her powers kind of sucked because she wasn't exactly in the right element for it, if you catch my drift. ^.^}
Mala nodded. "You're right, Van. Also, you became the motivational speaker as soon as you got the hell out of that ring since you have the most reason to be optomistic." she pointed out.

"I do? Even though I've still a got a demon that's eager to tear my throat out and Atius could come down at any second to give me a good scolding and finger wag?" Van said half jokingly. He really wasn't worried about the wrath of Atius. It was the demon that was going to give him more trouble if their last encounter was any indication.

Mala chuckled. "Good point." After he said the seccond bit she replied, "That's part of why Riley and I are training - so we can be of some use instead of just causing unwanted trouble." Then, just to tease Van, she gave him a big yet quick hug as she said, "Still, I didn't know you cared about us so much~"

Van blushed a bit from the unexpected hug. "You're a bad influence on me. You're turnin' me into a sap." he said trying to maintain his cool as he scratched the back of his head. "Besides, last thing I need on my conscience is letting a perfectly cute girl and her kid brother die on my watch." Now it was Van's turn to walk ahead of the other two in an attempt to maintain his dignity of a tough guy.

"Haha! Uncle Van is a softy~!" Riley teased in a sing-song voice as well, giving Van yet another nickname as he dashed to catch up with the thief.
"Wait, WHAT?! Uncle Van?! Where the hell did that come from?!" Van demanded, eying Riley in case he decided to hug him as well. It felt like they were ganging up on him to destroy his cool reputation and dignity.
"Sure! You're like a fun uncle, so you're Uncle Van! Besides, you do like my sis, so-"

Mala blinked at what Van and Riley were saying, not quite understanding what they meant. "What're you two talking about? I'm horribly confused." she said, probably not getting it only for the sake of more giggles and to prolonge certain drama.
