He tried not to see the rising faces; tried closing his eyes and feeling his way down slowly with his toes but couldn't make it. He paused for a very long time, trembling and sick, before he could will himself to step onto the platform that last time he'd bounded onto with enthusiasm that seemed far, far more alien to him than this terror did.
That's the sort of person he was. More accustomed to fear and cowardice, then, than to bravery and to confidence.
When the figure advanced out of the mist, he was terrified to see that it looked as wary and ill as he felt, all crouched down in a defensive stance. But it advanced nonetheless, and Amity, stomach churning, knew nothing but the blind terror of self-preservation instinct. He remembered to lift the guns just as the figure closed in and sank something sharp into his side. He couldn't make himself look to see what, exactly.

The beast hits her with sword and the sharp side cuts, tears her into ribbons and she won't back down without a fight and it's so much easier just to close her eyes and squeeze the triggers and BANG BANG BANG.

Closing her eyes was the worst possible choice, closing her eyes was an admission of weakness and the creature pounced-- a literal leap, latching onto her body, and it strikes her in the temple and the world goes blurry.

Firearms weren't designed for close-range combat, and also there was the overwhelming hindbrain need to get away. Navigating the terrain here was terrifying enough when he had his senses about him. Blind with the desire to flee it was much worse. The glancing blow with the butt of the guns was as much to give himself space as to fight back.

The thing had gotten him backed into a corner of sorts, but it didn't seem pleased at the accomplishment. Its face was twisted up in a nauseated expression as it gave another half-hearted stab.

He suddenly decided he didn't actually want to do this. He made an attempt to scramble backwards the way he'd come, but found himself utterly incapable of leaving the makeshift arena.

In desperation, he actually closed his eyes before he pointed the guns in the general direction of the attacker, and flinched as he squeezed the trigger.
He waited, steeled, for the blow to land, but it never came. When he opened his eyes there was just the fog, shapeless as before.
He half-crawled, half-walked to the edge of the platform, and sat down, feeling like he might be sick.
That brought a flicker of memory too, that entailed staring into a lamentably non-empty bucket. He didn't want it right now. He pushed it away.

He wasn't actually sure this body could vomit. That was probably for the best, as the urge to do so became very strong when he lost his footing and ended up staring at the fragments of stone falling away into the endless fog. He listened for the sound of them hitting bottom, but the sound never came.

Fear made him wobbly-kneed. Not a great state to be in, given the terrain.
And then, of course, tumbling down again only fed the fear. Excellent! He liked the bloodlust better than this, for sure.

He let out a yell when something snatched his ankles, a yell that bounced back to him off the fog and the spires, and although he thought for a split second that he'd recovered, the step was traitorous, and gave way.
He remembered this had happened last time. The fear faded away, and it was with relief and with a lingering sense of shame at his own cowardice that he was deposited gently on the checkerboard floor.
He got what he came for, and booked it.

Still smarting from the phantom pains the Forge had left him with, Sarviur booked it to the strange little stairwell for some rather welcome monotony. He knew he'd have it for a little while, at least, and this time he tried to dodge the little eddies of fog as they scurried across his path.
Here it grew too much, though, and he was overtaken instead by -
Victory.
It came to her so easily, though she'd never been actually tested before. With the sword in her hand she cleaved body from life, parrying blows with little touches - almost kisses, the way she held the blade -
The memory cut off. It was strange, but Sarviur felt elated nonetheless.
