Shameless Hunter

PostPosted: Sun Oct 21, 2012 9:11 pm

After striking the other hunter, Szczeosny faded back into the throng of hunters that had opposed the horse creature. The one that was now nothing but a stone statue. Definitely not human.

But the girl was...

The overbearing voices had faded away with time, leaving him stricken with guilt and worry over what he'd done. Rather than get between the hunter leader and his red enemy, or the guy who'd had his weapon ripped off and broken, Szczeosny stayed back, watched, waited, wondering if he would be able to make sense of any of this.

"Dziękuję," he muttered as she bandaged him. Other than no longer bleeding, he would appear totally fine. He recognized her from a brief glance. Mimsy, another Life trainee. He moved closer to her, by a small fraction. He could hear the voices roaring to life again in his head, and it was every bit as awful as last time. At least she was someone new enough to possibly understand his confusion. Piosenka had reverted to a stony silence. If he wasn't going to fight, she wasn't going to help him. Or maybe something else. He really didn't understand women sometimes, even if they were also weapons.

He glanced back to the carnage-in-progress, then to Mimsy's stern expression. "Vhat is plan?"

The sound of low growls, snapping teeth...it was comforting in its own way. Yin was moving quickly, deflecting attacks before they could get through, grateful that others were also concentrating on protecting and healing the figure they were calling Red.

The words distracted him though, though he knew he should read nothing into them. Heat of battle, defending had just distracted the zomboil while he spoke, that was all. "Than I want you here," he muttered. Easier to keep up with him, that was all.

A mixture of frustration and confusion and wonderment and regret flashed across Wilson’s face as he sat back down. He flinched slightly as the conversation continued, regardless of his arms. “I told you all to shut up…” he hissed as he turned his head slightly toward the group once more. Then a hand was placed on his shoulder and he turned around even more. He relaxed slightly when he realized it was Gale. “Gale. Hey,” he greeted softly with a weak smile. “Some battle this turned out to be.” He half-nodded to the majority of hunters who weren’t attacking and then he gestured toward himself and Ryan.

“It’s fine,” he sighed as he waved away Madeline’s apology. He gave another weak smile anyways. “Physically? Yes. Emotionally and mentally? Hard to say.” Wilson adjusted Ryan’s injured arm slightly. “I think it’s better that you missed out on this drama, anyways. It’s too much for me to handle.” He half-nodded to Red. “I think you’re supposed to fight her,” he offered. “I’m going to watch over Ryan for now.”

Slowly, he reached over to pick up his cannons should the need for them arise. “I don’t know, Ryan.” Wilson fought the urge to hug his legs and bury his face in his arms. “I’ve asked myself that far too many times now.”

Malodore hadn't been there when Red had fallen, but it had heard the hesitation in Nurse Cricket's voice, and felt the pain its own mentor had felt at her passing. For that reason alone-

-and then one of them struck Riley, and the plague doctor tensed in absolute fury. It snapped its wings forward; there were enough others there that many feathers harmlessly deflected, but hopefully a few found their mark in the Hunter's flesh.

He could not even begin to describe the depths of the pain he was feeling, nor what Jinhai was feeling, but Gale said nothing of his own feelings, pushed them away, and let them fall back into the recesses of his mind, of his heart. Instead, he reached out a hand, and gently pushed aside some of Ryan's dirt streaked hair so that he could see his eyes.

"You are fighting for what's right," he said quietly, and he felt movement behind him, Madeline's familiar voice wafting towards him, and then Wilson's.

"Ryan," said Gale. "Whatever anyone else might say or do or believe or think, whatever they believe - don't ever be ashamed of what you just did. There's no lack of dignity in doing your best to protect those you care about."

Sherry hadn't said much to Tori besides, "I really have no idea what's going on." Between the voices in her head, the fog, and the complete chaos that was going on all around her, she really didn't know what was happening.

And it kept happening so fast. The minute she figured one thing out, something else happened. The worst part was, hunters had started attacking each other. Ones she knew were not fakes. Even as she began to piece together what was happening, the battle seemed to shift again.

At least the voices in her head had stopped.

She was feeling a bit better, and her view of the battle, while still obscured by fog, seemed a bit clearer. Caelius was now in the battle, and while that didn't bode well, it did seem like they had a clear enemy again. Er. Well. For a moment things looked clear. But then Caelius was beating up hunters, too. It seemed like s**t just kept hitting the fan.

Things in red the students seemed attached to, dying hunters, dragons, everyone losing their freaking mind...Hell in a hand basket. That's where this is going.

Her weapon was not impressed.

I have to admit, your life philosophies are so much easier. Sherry gripped the glaive tightly, then moved in attempting to hit the thing dressed in red. Because why not?

FINALLY.
He looked over to see who had finally broken through the defenses, and raised an eyebrow when it was someone he actually knew.

"Nice." he muttered.
It was good to see SOME of the hunters still had some sense in them.

"The plan, bozo, is up to you. Don't go lookin' for answers in someone elses face." Robert had just barely heard one of the new Life trainees looking for guidance, and he was already jaded enough to give him a sharp, unnecessarily bitter reply. He resummoned Jezebel, and his eyes darkened as he stood beside Lucky, sandwiching him between the broad man and Mimsy. Robert's eyes, however, were only for Red.

"There's no point in healing anymore. We're not going home until that is dead. And we need to get home." He'd finally resolved his apathy, as he realized that Caelius might - might - be in trouble.

And if Caelius lost.. so did they.

Petra was waiting for him back home. He didn't feel like disappointing her, even if his heart wasn't in the fight anymore.

Eva flinched at the sound smack that resounded from the slap, her voice suddenly growing sharp as she tried to push herself forward and in front of Dakota. "Hey! That was unnece--"

She fell silent as someone suddenly grabbed her arm, stumbling for a few steps as they guided her away. There was a moment of confusion--who was...?--but she felt herself relax when she realized that the reassuring hand holding hers was a familiar one. Her own fingers curled around his hand, squeezing back as she docilely followed after him.

When they reached the group, the girl glanced briefly at the others in silent acknowledgment before turning to look at the young man cradling his weapon's tablet. "Ryan..." What could she say? Eva didn't have an answer for that--not after what they had just witnessed. She averted her gaze for a moment, and then crouched down, lips pressing together in a thin line at the sight of the trainee's arm. She instinctively lifted her hand to her neck, only to realize that she had given her scarf to Otto earlier.

"Can I borrow a scarf? I want to try getting your arm into a sling." It would be a makeshift sling, but Eva had hopefully learned enough at her short time at nursing school to put her skills to use.

Red jerked back as a white canine form interposed itself between her and Caelius for a moment, running forward to take a bite from the division leader. "NO! Red snapped, bringing her weapon up. More figures were coming out of the fog. Her finger removed itself from the trigger as she used the flat of her weapon to beat student and hunter alike out of her way. "Get back! He's MINE!" There was something about them and their proximity to Caelius that made her --

What? She felt tense. Nervous. Upset. Angry. It didn't help that she heard her name. Someone was yelling it, another was claiming she needed to be saved --

-- Saved? Saved?! That they had the audacity to even use that word and her name in the same sentence --

Red ignored the looming shadow of the dragon overhead as she moved forward to push a student out of her way, flamethrower raised to attack. Something pulled her short and began to tug her back. Red reached behind her and grabbed her cloak, jerking it free with one quick movement that made her catch her breath and nearly collide into another student who offered her hand. Red grabbed hold of it and released it quickly as she steadied herself. "Get BA-" She stiffened as Fear began to flow into her, and snarled as a skeletal dragon attempted to pick her up.

Red twisted in Aymet's claws, teeth locked in a grimace as her cloak tore and ripped free from his claws. The dragon would receive a warning lick of blue flames for his troubles.
Iizbot
Aymet receives a warning 3 damage!

She landed heavily on the ground, wincing before standing up and violently shaking off any proffered help. "Get out of my way!" Red ordered, weapon raised menacingly. "You're not strong enough --" The werewolf stopped, her chin jerking up as she began to look around wildly. An unreadable expression crossed her face. Her weapon faded from her hands as she began to shove her way out of the protective barrier in a single-minded direction, quickly vanishing into the fog.

The Death lead made the motion to chase after Red, and the paused, reconsidering his options, and the students scattered throughout the fog. They weren't wasting effort on, not now, not yet. For now, it was stalemate.

And he was furious. The fog seemed to once again, visibly peel away at his each step, until he reached the other Hunters. If they thought Red was terrifying, clearly the did not know Caelius well enough. It was the sort of expression of someone debating whether or not to simply erase every mistake and start anew or deal with the current group of miscreants and punish accordingly, which all in the end came down to time and effort. Indeed which one was more costly?

He spat out blood, for now, lowering his weapon, pacing. "I underestimated most of you." As he talked, a humming, as if someone was prying into their thoughts. Watching them, weighing their actions. It felt oddly like an invasion of privacy. "When you became a Hunter, I was under the ******** impression that you became a Hunter. What do you ******** think this goddamn fog is?" Pause. "I will tell you exactly what. When you take sympathy on ******** Halloween creatures, when you become weak to them, doubt your job, your role, when you <******** fail to remember what it means to be a Hunter, you also lose the ability to ******** protect. If your ally became infected with Insanity, what do you think <******** happens to you? How do you even think all this Insanity ******** accumulated in the first place?"

Silence again. Agitation. The humming, louder. And then oddly enough, he laughed, just a little, a sharp bark, followed by a cough. More blood. "Wouldn't that make Insanity the most unpredictable element, to invade everything, everyone, your homes, your so-called loved ones without you even ******** noticing all because you could not carry on your task. You knew your fate from the start, the fate as Hunters that you will protect those important to you, that you will protect this world at the cost of your ******** life and yet you continuously cry out when even one of you is hurt. The ability to even comprehend what it means to see beyond yours cope of narrow vision is entirely lost inside your ******** thick skulls. Then who the ******** is going to fight for others, what, the ******** Insanity perhaps? There is no battle if there is noone fighting for either side. Do you really think you are the ones who have sacrificed the mos-

'That's enough, master.' A hum from Circe, in his mind only.

The Death lead paused. He looked confused, just a bare moment, as if unsure exactly why he said the last part, before turning his back on the rest of the Hunters. They could try to kill him if they wanted.

Time was running out and he didn't feel like wasting it playing with failures.

There was no movement in the thick mist, no hint of battle-worn red. It was as if she vanished; was she nothing more than a fragment? An image, a misplaced piece of memory that grew and thrived in Insanity long enough to make one wonder: is that really her? The scents, the warmth, the colors... And yet there is the memory of her death, the weight of her last moments. There could possibly be no way to come back from that. But to escape for a little while, to believe that one could be saved...

...And yet for some there was no chance of saving. Even with the sudden burst of hope, they would flare brightly before fading just as quickly and as suddenly as they came.

Red looked up towards the gloomy sky as Insaniy gently swirled around her, weapon in her hands. She slowly inhaled as her fingers traced the rune on her weapon, her fingers rising after her fingers slid across the glyph to reach forward and alight upon the stone skull.

The pins she did not touch. They were not meant for her. Not now, not here, not ever. Before? Perhaps. Her hand fell to her side, hanging before her hand touched the glyph again.

A smug, self-assured grin pulled at her conscious. the weapon confessed,

Red shook her head. It does. It is a grave; We should respect the dead.

His curiosity nudged her, underlined by feline superiority.

It is who we were. There's no going back now.

Then a tap.

And a slap.

Once.

Twice.

Thrice.

Red closed her eyes as she felt the pull of the weapon. This was how it should be. This is how it --

No.

The werewolf curled her hands into fists, teeth clenched. This was not how it was going to be. She felt herself reach out towards her weapon, towards the irresistible pull. It was easy enough to tell when the weapon had grabbed onto her, and easy enough to grab it in turn and pull. After all, she had been pulled into it once before. She knew what it was like, and unlike any other who walked beneath the Halloween moon she knew how to twist it, to turn the tables.

The werewolf felt pride and satisfaction growing within her as she pulled, consuming the weapon. This was her -- no. This was their choice. While she had a score to settle, she wasn't alone.

Not anymore.

A year of dying and slowly, agonizingly waiting for both Fear and Insanity to rebuild itself piece by piece left plenty of time to learn about her friend-companion-weakness-murderer. Another would have become lost, would have slipped into the madness brought on by voices. But with a weapon? One who was used to being a voice? Red had a drastic advantage. She had felt small, then. Nothing more than a scareling clinging to an older brother-companion-mate who held you just as tightly back, as if he would lose her if he dared release his grip even a little.

She felt him brush her consciousness, nudging her. Reminding her. The werewolf shook herself, wishing now of all times that she was a little bit vainer just to be able to peer at herself in a mirror. Was she gray? Did she bare the visible mark?

A quick zip and check of her skin beneath her bodysuit confirmed her disappointment. Clean. She wasn't infected. And yet --

Of course. The palm of her hand rose and tapped against her forehead. How could she forget? She lowered her hand, palm facing up as she beckoned to the fog. It began to swirl around her, finally breaking the cycle she had to endure for far too many moons.

A very small, almost non-existent part of him was aware that every thing that he had worked so hard to try to maintain was crumbling part starting with himself. It didn't matter. Die, kill, it didn't matter. There was still always, that task, that itch, that wouldn't complete.

The instant Red emerged again, he moved, fast, form disappearing with weapon, and then reappearing, descending on the other. Circe glowed as it sang forward, another shockwave blasting towards the incomplete Red -

- As something crackled underneath the entity's Insanity-covered remains. Two barrier daggers. A perfect line. The runes churned a dull grey.

Arcs of electricity ran forward instantly, parting the fog instantaneously with each snap, hungrily licking forwards, threatening to devour the source the so-called fragment of Red.

Time was running out.

The Insanity grew thicker when Red arrived. At first there was nothing; a blink later and she was there, one hand on Mort's shoulder. "I believe you have something of mine," she whispered to him as she pulled him close.

SNAP.

Mort dissipated between her hands, his fragments swiftly absorbing into her hands. She began to stride forward, head held high and a sway in her step.

At least she manged to take two steps before Caelius was upon her. A choked-off snarl came from her as she shoved Belladonna behind her, blocking the witch from harm. And eating a full-blown shockwave to the face, only to be followed by the electricity from the barrier daggers.

"I told you to get back!" She snapped as she fell to one knee, shaking and gasping.

Dakota fumed as he removed himself from the other hunters. Violate, confused, hurt and angry drew the teenager down into a pit of straight despair and no motivation.

When Caelius came over, he was ready to ignore him. Ready to to push the words the hunter said out of his mind and misery.

but it was true. Everything the hunter said was true. It didn't change them, or the situation they were in. It didn't help the hurt and anger...but it was the truth.

Dakota's grip tightened on Chama as he stared at Red and looked at his hunters. It was then that he realized that while he didn't give two ******** shits about Rep anymore...he did about the others near him. And if he wanted to get home, then they had to do what they always done. They had to hunt.

He moved instead to slash at Red with Chama. All that pent up anger at Rep went straight for the werewolf instead....
