Lin tilted her head and wondered if his tone was from the fact he was bored, annoyed or just didn't want to deal with Miyuki anymore.
"We're done," Lin replied, "Did you like what you saw?"
She was asking this to Miyuki though, since Miyuki would understand more this concept of looking for the sake of looking.
Miyuki didn't disappoint and nodded, "Uh huh! There are lots of soft bags and pretty bags....."
"Maybe sometime we'll get you one since really the butterfly bag is my preference rather than yours..."
Besides then she could get that bag back.

Aethos frowned at Lin. "You already have several bags, and from what I can tell, all of your things fit into them," he told her flatly as they left the shop. "What use would you possibly have for another bag?"
Earendil shook his head. "It's not about the need or necessity," he told the prince calmly. "It's about taking pleasure in something. Life is nothing without something that we can take pleasure in. To simply survive ... it's like living underwater and breathing through a reed. Pointless."

"Besides," Lin replied, "Miyuki is going to be living out of that bag for many years to come. It is better for her she chooses something that reflects her rather than it reflecting myself. I got that bag because I have an affinity for butterflies."
Miyuki though, didn't and Lin wasn't quite sure what Miyuki had an affinity for quite yet.

"Would you get Miyuki a custom bag?" Earendil asked Lin curiously as they strolled along. "With a design of her own choosing?"
He thought it was a good idea: and he was certain Miyuki would like it too.

Lin tilted her head thoughtfully, "You know... I hadn't thought about that."
Would Miyuki be old enough to appreciate something like a custom bag she couldn't help but wonder though.

"And there's no rush," Earendil reminded Lin. "We're going to be here for quite a while, I'm sure Miyuki will grow at some point while we're here, and she won't even need a bag, really, until we start traveling again."
By that time Miyuki would be more than capable of choosing and appreciating a design for her bag, and she would have a stronger personality to reflect.

"True," Lin nodded at this, "Considering how long we're going to be here I cannot, not see her grow at least one stage by then... you know this will be new for her, it'll be the longest she's stayed in one place since she was born."
Lin couldn't help but wonder what it would be like for Miyuki once they headed back to the Four Lands or even Gaia for that matter.

Earendil chuckled. "Like you, on our first journey?" he teased her. "Until then you had never been in any world for very long."
Six years in one world - that had more than doubled her age.
"There's the jewelry shop," he added with a grin, pointing. "We should stop there next."
Aethos blinked at Earendil. "What use would you have for jewelry?"

Lin blinked at Aethos, here was a man who needed to take time out and smell the proverbial roses.
"We're going in to look," Lin amended, "Jewelry is an art, it is a way of expression, for both the creator and the person who wears it. It can be a form of reliving sentimental memories... and it's pretty."
She would never tell Aethos this because at the moment Aethos loved his father dearly (which as it should be), but she really wanted to kick his father where the sun didn't shine because it seemed to her it was as if Aethos had never even seen the sun before.
"If you only look in life, when you have to, a lot will pass you by."

"Isn't it a bit of a waste, though, to get something solely for the sake of looking at it?" Aethos pressed.
Earendil shook his head. "It's what makes people unique, Aethos-sola. It allows people to express themselves without saying anything. For example, Lin has an affinity for butterflies. She has a butterfly bag and butterfly jewelry. And she likes blue, a very peaceful and calm colour. And to people around her, that tells them a little bit about her. As for me, I don't wear much extras ... but that's not because I don't like it, it's just because if I were going to wear any sort of jewelry, I would want it to be something meaningful, like Lin and her butterflies. Something that says something about me, or that is from someone I care deeply about, an item that might represent an important moment of my life. Which is the other reason for jewelry and other such things: gifts. It's a way to show someone that you care for them."

Lin's mind drifted to feathered necklaces when Earendil explained how he would want jewelry that said something about him or represented an important moment in his life. A thought that she had to beat back mentally because now was not the time to have such thoughts.
Slow and steady... slow and steady... no rushing.
"Not even I wear a lot of extras," Lin admitted, "Just my necklace, but it's important! I received it as a gift to congratulate me on making it up to the training grounds in the Southland, which meant I could receive training there."
She smiled at this because she hadn't taken it off since then, it was so long ago now.

"I know that wouldn't mean anything to you," Earendil told Aethos, "but in our land, that is a great honour. It is a difficult mountain to climb, and when a child is able to climb it him- or herself, that is when they are deemed worth of receiving training to enter into our Home Guard - the equivalent of your Wing Riders, I would imagine."
Aethos nodded slowly. "But when you have no one to give anything to ... why bother with even looking?" he asked, changing the subject slightly. He didn't care about expressing himself - the people knew who he was and what he was like, they didn't need anything extra.

"Because it is nice to look, some people find looking at things other people make enjoyable. It gives us an appreciation to those who can make things with their hands, and if the owner likes to they might even explain the process."
It was like pulling teeth with this man, no wonder why he was having trouble adjusting he had nothing enjoyable he would like to do in his spare time.

Aethos wasn't quite convinced, but he supposed that he might as well give it a try. After all, it wasn't like he had anything better to do - and he had promised that he would accompany them for the afternoon.
Still, it was beyond him how Earendil, a prince in his own land, could find all of this enjoyable. There were more important things that had to be taken care of, there always were: why was this waste of time so important to the foreign prince?
"If you say so," he shrugged, following them into the jewelry shop.

"Oh look! Pretty!" Miyuki explained making it obvious she too thought looking at jewelery was a good thing.
She pranced right on in before her parents.
"Don't touch anything," Lin warned her, "And keeping it to Common Elvish."
"Hai!"
Lin blinked, she didn't know why Miyuki kept saying 'yes' in Japanese, it seemed like it was a tic.
