Not necessarily. You could just black out and then start it all over again with no memory of anything in between.

When was this?
They had a scene in Farscape where Crichton (Ben Browder) and Aeryn (Claudia Black) were trapped in a ship and had to vent the air temporarily. Crichton had to take this injection that essentially killed him temporarily, and they got into a mini discussion about the afterlife. After he came to, Aeryn asked if he'd seen the "white light" he mentioned before. He said no, only blackness, and that maybe it was because he wasn't supposed to die then.

In voyager, Neelix dies (yay!) and comes back to life (awww), and then has a moral crisis because he saw no afterlife.
