Date: 11.28.05
Location: Arae's room in the Silva Regia tower
Synopsis: Arae and Averno recover from the cupcakes o' doom. Arae gets a message from an anonymous suitor.
Participants: Averno and Arae
The Scene:

Quote:
A small letter was left on the front step of Arae's home, addressed to Arae in a smooth purple ink.

The Letter
My dearest Arae,
My heart is beating hard against my chest.
Each time you leave the room it seems so dim.
My very essence waits for your caress;
Sweet hand to hand and gentle limb to limb.

There is no signature to the small note, as if the writer figured she would know, or was too shy to sign.

Arae stared out the windows, watching the pale winter sunlight stream through and across the linen handkerchief which served as her sheets. Her doll house bed in the greenhouse of the tower had a nigh-permanent imprint of her slight form where she'd lain for so long recovering from the aftermath of the cupcake she ate in the Feien HQ.

Sajhiri had been shocked and horrified to find her and Averno near death, and rushed them to the old shop where they spent some time in the care of fleet surgeons, repairing the damage done. News that one of their own, a juvenile much less, had purposely tried to kill them all had shaken the gentle ancient to her core. She was relieved when she awoke back home and was told there was only one casualty, that of the poisoner himself.

She was pulled from her reverie when Averno stalked in. They'd not spoken much during their recovery, both horrendously embarassed at their fight. They had figured out that each one thought the other was referring to someone else during the scuffle. She offered her bond sibling a small smile.

Averno returned it, though it warped into a bit of a mischevious grin. "Look what I found on the doorstep" she mused, handing over the small letter. "Purple ink too, you'd think if he wanted it to be a secret, he'd be more subtle."

Arae blinked in confusion as she accepted the note, and her vibrant eyes scanned over the words intently. Her pale cheeks flushed at the message and her smile broaded with each line. She clittched it to her chest with girlish glee. "Do you really think it's from him? What should I do? Should I write back? What if it isn't him afterall?"

Averno snickered quietly. "Well if it isn't him it's the sentiments you want to pass on to him anyway, right? Just be like him and don't sign it." She looked out the glass ponderously, wondering how bad she could maybe freak Silva out with a message like that. Just to see him squirm.

Arae skittered out of bed and gathered up her writing materials, including green ink. "A great idea!" She began to scribe dilligently.

"Beloved Aleric,
Each tick in time I think of you,
Each moment dwells in memory,
But mem'ry pales and does not sate,
The need to have you here with me."

She addressed the note to him and blushed. "Do you think he'll know it's me?" she asked softly.

Averno snorted and took the message to deliver. "If he doesn't he's too stupid to have you." With an eyeroll she stalked off to deliver the message.

Date: 12.01.05
Location: Front Lawn of IceQueen's home
Synopsis: Averno delivers Aleric's latest message to Arae, and runs into Silva. Snogging ensues! eek
Participants: Averno, Silva, Ruby Soho, and Aleric
The Scene:

Ice's house was a small, cozy looking place already decorated for Christmas. There was a statue of Santa and Jack sitting by the front door and unlit Christmas lights decorating the front porch. It was only the first of December, so it's a sure sign that someone in the house loved Christmas very much indeed.

It was light out, and far earlier than Silva usually wakes up, but the dark red feien was lying on his back on the roof, his head pillowed by his hands and a toothpick hanging from the corner of his lips. He looked to be waiting for something.

Twas some night before Christmas,
And furtive and soft,
The flapping of wings,
Came from aloft.

A dark feien-sized form descended from the background of the starry sky, to alight near the Santa statue. The christmas lights played across Averno's scowling features and the envelope in her hands. "Bah Humbug!" she muttered.

"Not a Christmas girl, huh?" Silva asked loudly enough for her to hear as he slowly sat up and looked down at her. "Why am I not surprised?" He had been waiting for her to show up. He figured it had something to do with the old man and his, as Soho called her, lady friend. But he had been surprised the first time he sensed her magical energy.

For a second he had even thought she came to see him.

"I'm a darkness element, Silva. Leave it to the Gaians to light up their yards at night so brightly a 747 could land in them. So yes, not much of a Christmas girl." She rested her hands on her hips and looked over the white-haired figure with a frown.

"I suppose I owe you a thank you, for snapping the neck of the little fiend that nearly killed me with those poisoned cupcakes."

"He got you, too?" He asked, slightly surprised. "I hadn't noticed." He got to his feet, stretching languidly before stepping off the side of the house. His wings spread to catch him right before he hit the porch. "But I'm surprised. No lecture on becoming even more cold-blooded than I already was? You disappoint me, Princess."

He glanced up, eyeing the mistletoe that hung from the roof with amusement. If she hadn't noticed he wasn't about to bring it up. Not unless she really pissed him off.

Soho had insisted on kissing him (on the cheek, of course) at least five times already thanks to those damn leaves. "Tell me, would you have done it?"

Averno's gaze followed Silva's eyes to the roof and the plant dangling there. She smirked slightly, before looking back at him. "In an instant. But I couldn't for the same reason you didn't know I was sick. After Arae and I tried to murder each other in a duel, Sajhiri separated us and locked both of us up. Shortly after that we were both so ill any chance of escape was out of the question."

She turned the envelope over in her hands as she talked, her wings twitching in memory of the fury in Arae's eyes, the mindless rage. She wasn't about to admit the ancient likely would have ended her if Sajhiri hadn't interfered. "I'd have disemboweled him and fed his entrails to the gargoyles if I'd been able to get to him. You were much too merciful. Your little girlfriend making you soft?"

The ever so slightest hints of a wince crossed his face as he remembered what had happened in the shop. "No." He said. "I was planning on drawing it out." He said. "But something... distracted me." He eyed the letter. "Writing me love letters, princess? I'm stunned."

A dark brow arched at Silva's wince. Mistaking it for her spotting of the mistletoe, Averno sidled closer to him, lowering her voice to a husky near whisper. "Do you want me to write you love letters?" She purred.

She leaned back then and blunted, "Do I seem the mushy type? Arae and Aleric are the Queen and King of romantic nonsense. I've been reduced to a messenger. But if it'll get her out of the house and out of my hair some, it's worth it. You need to get that boy off his tail to stop writing and start macking on her."

He laughed. For the first time in God knows how long, he actually laughed. "Macking? Aleric? Damn, woman, you don't know him very well, do you?" He drawled when he was done, chewing on his toothpick. "She'll have to tie him down if she wants a snog. All that nice guy bullshit he lives for means he takes things way too slow."

"Now me, on the other hand. I'm always up for an easy lay." It was a lie. He hadn't slept with Quantel, but Q was more than he had time to handle. But she didn't need to know that. Besides, she was more likely to slap him than snog him. He leered at her, knowing it would piss her off. "So... wanna?"

Averno snorted. "Nice guy means nothing if he gets around Arae. She's the closest thing to a free loving hippy I've ever seen. All earth mothery and 'its natural' and such. If she fancies him, she'll get him to drop that goody goody nonsense at least long enough for a snogfest."

At the proposition narrowed her eyes. "What makes you think you could handle me, skinny man?"

The image of Aleric in that position amused him, but he followed her change of subject quickly enough. "Hmm... So you've got some experience?" He asked, doubt showing clearly on his face. "Wore out some other poor b*****d? Now I'm downright curious. Who's your lover, Princess?"

"It wouldn't be polite to snog and tell." Averno quipped. She wasn't about to let Silva know she had no experience whatso-freaking-ever. Not so much as a kiss. "You look worried, don't think you have the stamina for it?" Antagonizing Silva was the best Christmas present she could hope for. She might actually have to thank Arae later.

She idly tossed the envelope to the doorstep for Aleric to find when next he ventured out.

"Oh, I have stamina enough." He said with a little smirk. "I'd last a hell of a lot longer than you could. But I wouldn't want any of your ex-lovers getting jealous. I've already killed one psycho b*****d this month. Don't want to make it a habit." He drawled, his tone belying his words.

"Besides, I wouldn't want you getting addicted."

Averno choked out a laugh. "Puh-leeze. As if a skinny boy like you could addict me. Who are you and what did you do with the Silva I knew? Afraid to kill an ex-boyfriend if he needed killing? That doesn't sound like you." She grinned. "But it's ok. I can accept it if I intimidate you that way."

Her question hit him a little harder than he thought it would, but he just smirked. "Sometimes when you're as ******** up in the head as I was at the time things don't go the way you think they should."

He reached out, to touch her ear as his other hand raised to his toothpick. "And princess, you'd have to be a hell of a lot scarier than you are to intimidate me." He went on, giving her plenty of time to pull away if she wanted.

Averno stiffened at the touch on her ear for a moment, more at his reaching for the vicinity of her neck than anything. He did just murder another feien afterall. But the sensation of fingertips on her ear sent a relaxing warmth through her and she didn't draw away.

"You've never seen me scary, Beanpole. Muscles and strength aren't the only ways to hurt others." She traced a fingertip along the inside of his wrist lightly.

He saw the way she tensed. Would everyone do that when he touched them? Soho hadn't, and Aleric probably wouldn't either. That was all that mattered. But his fingers continued to gently stroke her ear as he pondered her words. "Hell, that one I learned a while back, too." He told her casually. "But it doesn't keep me from needing a good snog now and then."

His hand moved his toothpick to its spot behind his ear then moved to her back, below the wings as he looked her straight in the eye. "And threats like that just get me excited, princess."

Averno sucked in a breath. She felt a little lightheaded and wasn't entirely sure what to make of it. "Do they indeed? And what happens when you get excited, Silva?" Her eyelids lowered to half mast and she pressed closer to him, one hand seeking the base of one of his wings, just brushing it very lightly. She swallowed hard, telling herself she could handle it, and him. Even though she truly wasn't so sure of it.

"It depends." He said, his smirk widening at her touch. "But in this case it could be good things." He whispered, leaning close. His mouth barely touched hers as he spoke again. "Very good things." He whispered before kissing her.

Her first kiss, well the first not coming from someone who looked on her as a daughter, was not something she ever expected from Silva, who she'd long scribed in her diaries as her "arch nemesis". That nagging little piece of information was quickly smothered by the sensations of being kissed. Her eyes drifted shut entirely as her lips parted in response. Her heavy silken curls cascaded across his chest as she shivered against him. She wanted to give a witty retort, but the witty portion of her brain was momentarily short circuited.

He had once thought she would taste like poison. But he had tasted poison before. She didn't. He brought his hand up, gently brushing against the base of her wings as he deepened the kiss slowly. It was as much for the pleasure as it was to wipe the filthy taste of Casca's kiss from his mind. The princess was evil, sure, but she wasn't as twisted as that son-of-a-b***h had been.

He was so intent on kissing her senseless that he didn't even notice the gasp from the rooftop. Soho watched with a mix of fascination and jealousy as her Mister Silva Demon made out with a feien she had never met before. But she backed away, heading for the other side of the house without saying a word.

So this was what it was like...what made Arae get all googly eyed and swoony over Aleric. This was what she'd been wanting to do, and Averno got to first. A little tingling triumph rushed through her and her free arm snaked around Silva's head, to pull him rougher to her. Any control she may have been hoping to exhibit was washed away in a flood of enthusiastic passion.

He laughed against her lips, pulling back slightly even as he kept rubbing the base of her wings gently. "I thought you said you wouldn't get addicted, princess." He teased her. "You sure feel that way to me."

Averno's breathing was rapid and her heart was pounding. His drawing back frustrated her, but she composed herself as she smirked at him. "I thought YOU said you could handle it, beanpole. Too much for you? Needed a break?" Her hand traced the contours of his ear teasingly.

"Mmm... want more, I see." He said. He had her. It was even easier than his first time. He leaned down, brushing his lips against hers again, wondering how she would take to being pinned up against the Santa statue and snogged brainless.

"Ahem." Aleric said, trying not to laugh as he dropped down to the porch as well. "I'll just be taking my letter now. Thank you, Averno, for delivering it."

Averno growled and sank her teeth into Silva's bottom lip animalistically. Amusingly enough, she then tried to pin HIM against Santa to snog him senseless.

Aleric? Aleric who? She shot the ancient a quick thumbs up in response to his thanks.

Silva started laughing. It covered Aleric's own amusement easily. He reached down, hauling her closer and wrapping his gigantic wings around both of them as he kissed her just as wildly. Who would have known the little princess would be the horniest of all the females he had had?

Aleric shook his head, wondering how he would tell Arae about this. She didn't approve of Silva, and she hadn't even met him yet. But to find out that he was... having a relationship with her sister? He didn't dare try to guess how she would react.

He took his letter and headed back to the roof.

Ah yes, Arae would probably not be thrilled, but Averno was a big girl, and she wasn't her mother, no matter how she sometimes felt she was. It's the quiet ones who are often the wildest inside afterall.

Aleric's letter was in the same lime green ink as the last one from Arae.

Beloved Aleric,

The ink upon this page does set,
My simple words to history,
My love for you I'll not regret,
If you can feel the same for me.

Averno's nails slid up Silva's back, before sheathing to let her fingertips caress his wings and shoulderblades.

He groaned. Claws were new... claws were damn good... He had always been a bit masochistic. He pulled back, gasping just a little. "Damn I feel sorry for all your ex's. You probably left them in ribbons." He said, reaching down and grabbing her by the knees to wrap them around his waist. His fingers rubbed roughly against the back of her knees. A tiny drop of blood trailed from his bottom lip to emphasize his point.

Averno grinned lustfully as she licked the blood from Silva's lip. "I'm a creature of darkness...did you expect any less?" she purred teasingly. She shivered at the touch to the back of her knees.

"I shouldn't have." He agreed, enjoying the shiver so much that he did it again. He wasn't about to admit she was the first darkness feien he had ever snogged. It wouldn't look good on his reputation.

Hell, now that he thought about it, the last time he had gotten this excited had been when he was a kid. What next, tag for kisses again? Or would this be different? Would they pretend to hate each other in public then sneak hot make-out sessions in the bathroom? He snorted at the idea, pulling away from her lips to kiss her neck. At times like these he almost wished he had fangs.

Averno groaned softly at the touch of Silva's mouth on her neck. She arched her head back, curls cascading over her shoulders, and breathed deeply. "And I should have expected all your pent up aggression could be put to such good use..." Her head was spinning, she felt dizzy, almost like she was floating. Her skin was flushed and overwarm.

"Mmm, I could have told you that one." He whispered against her neck. Then he licked her, his tongue trailing up her neck to run over the base of her ear.

Averno shuddered and let out a soft sound of delight. Was the snow melting around them by now? Sajhiri would have a fit if she knew what she was doing. Damnable goody goody. Her fingers tangled in his hair, one leg sliding down the back of one of his. How many had come before her, she wondered. And how many would come after. She thought he was a horrid lech, she still thought that, but this was so...much....fun. She half hated herself for enjoying it so much.

"You taste good, princess." He whispered into her ear. "Come by for a snog anytime."

Averno swallowed hard and she pulled back, lowering herself to the ground. She forced a smirk, though her knees felt a bit weak. "You don't taste too bad yourself, beanpole. If you want me, you know where to find me." She smoothed her mussed hair with a hand. "I should get back to the tower. I have things to do."

He watched her through lowere eyelashes, a little smirk pulling at his lips. She probably enjoyed snogging a killer. It was a good thing. He doubted he'd find anyone else daring enough to say the same. "I'll do that." He said, sticking his toothpick between his lips again.

And best of all, she would never say those words that still haunted him.

Twas some night before Christmas,
And out on the lawn,
A game had been played,
But which one was the pawn?

With a flap of leathery wings Averno was gone, blending seemlessly into the nighttime sky, flitting her way home to ponder what she'd just done.

From the Pages of Arae's Diary...

12.01.05 - He loves me! Sweet merciful winds he LOVES me! I thought I would be so alone in this place, having so little in common with the newly bloomed children, but Aleric, an ancient like I, has let me into his heart! His poems to me were so touching and heartfelt, that I can barely sleep or eat for daydreaming of him! His most recent poem reads:

Aleric
My lovely Arae,
My love cries out, but still I cannot speak,
Give voice to all these longings which I feel.
The common words like love, they seem so weak,
and can't describe this feeling that's so real.

Is that not the most romantic thing you've ever heard? I hope he comes to me soon. I wish to be near him, to breath in his scent and nestle in his arms. I have been alone for so long, I'd feared my heart would have turned hard as the earth in which I laid for so long.

Averno delivered my most recent reply to him. She came home looking somewhere between shaken and stirred. Not sure what that is all about. I'll ask her later, maybe. I don't want this feeling ruined by her typical negativity.

From the Pages of Averno's Diary...<

12.06.05 - What was I thinking!?!?!?!? How could I have let my first snog come from Silva? SILVA of all feien! I'm mortified, humiliated, distraught, and any other number of painful adjectives all inadequate to describe the horror and revulsion I'm feeling right now. How could I have done that? And worse yet, how could I have ENJOYED it!

And where can I find a spell or device to wipe the memory of it from my besoiled brain!? Arae says I've been walking around smiling and mooning like some lovestruck cow. I caught myself doing it twice today and realized I'd been thinking about the snog! This can't be possible, and it certainly can't be right. But I find myself continually tempted to fly to his house and see him again. I even caught myself nearly going through with a whim to make a headband out of the mistletoe Sajhiri hung in the living room so it'd dangle over my ears!

I think I need to go kill the pesky bugs in the garden that have been eating Jhiri's flowers with my newfound power. At last all my magical studies and training are showing me some results. Maybe I can use what I've learned to hurt some things and make me forget about Silva and how soft his lips were. ARGH! Did I just write that!?!?

Date: 12.09.05
Location: A well outside of Hadrian's mother's town.
Synopsis: Arae meets Hadrian and they talk about holidays.
Participants: Arae and Hadrian
The Scene:

In spite of his plan to "come home for the holidays", Hadrian had so far failed to actually return to the place he considered 'home'. Coming home wasn't as simply and carefree as he had always imagined it would be. Things had changed in his absence. People he knew seemed to no longer be around, and he was honestly a little bit concerned about returning to his mothers house and finding more changes. He was usually quite good at excepting the flow of things, and going with it, but somehow so far he had felt slightly awkward and things weren't coming as naturally as usual.
So he was settled on the lip of an abandoned well, outside the town where his mother lived, putting off his return to work on his idea of a rain shield out of magic.

She'd been flying for hours, gathering holly berries and mistletoe to craft a bouquet for Aleric. Arae was beginning to tire, the cold of winter seeping into her wings and making them stiff and difficult to keep flapping. Her gaze swept the landscape below her for a place to rest, and the vibrant orange flash of feienly color drew her attention. She descended in a slow and graceful spiral on the frigid currents of air.

"Hellooooo!" she called out, so as not to startle the male with a sudden landing. "Is there room for another there?"

Hadrian, who had only so far managed to set a leaf on fire - nothing even remotely umbrella like, found himself glad for the distraction. He waved energetically at the slowly descending feien, "Sure! Plenty of room."
He had a warm, friendly smile on his face by the time she landed, little gusts of wind from her decent tugging at his long hair, pulling wisps of it across his face.

The ancient alighted on the edge of the well and folded her wings around her for warmth. Her smile was equally toasty with a gentle edge to it as she dipped her head in greeting.

"A new face I've yet to put a name to. So many of those these days. I am Arae, bonded of Sajhiri Jihaar. Whom do I have the pleasure of addressing this fine, if chilly, day?"

"I'm Hadrian, nice t'meet you." He offered a hand, which felt particularly warm to the touch when compared to the cool winter air.
He wasn't exactly new...really...but he was honestly starting to FEEL like he was. He'd have to make his peace with that, and warmed by Arae's welcoming smile it seemed like that might be a little more possible then he had anticipated.
"Are you alright? I can get something made up to warm you up a bit, if you like."
He grinned just a little wider...like a kid who can't quite help showing off something he's proud of.

" A pleasure to meet you, Hadrian. It's been so long since I mingled with other feien, that I've a whole world of new names and faces to learn. I'll do my best to remember yours." She settled on the edge of the well, keeping her wings tight about her.

"Some warmth would be most welcome, thank you." she murmured. "Tis a lovely season, don't you think? There seems to be a great deal of joy in the air, and smiles on faces, despite recent difficulties for our kind."

"I'm pretty well in the same boat as you then." The fire feien said, peering around for a loose pebble in the wall they were perched on. "But...faces and names are really the only thing I DO have a good memory for."
He chuckled quietly at the comment, making it clear this didn't bother him much. After a moment he plucked a good sized pebble from a crack in the wall and held it up triumphantly.
"It is a nice holiday. But," he said as the pebble began to glow with an internal sort of warmth, "I enjoy it more in the middle of the summer."
He set the make shift heater between them.

Arae poked her hands out of her closed wings to hold them over the heated stone, relief spreading across her features. "Thank you, Hadrian, this helps a great deal." She rubbed her hands together, grateful to feel them unstiffen a bit.

She pondered his words for a time before offering, "I think I prefer spring the most. It's a time of life and rebirth, and it feels so lovely after the cold of winter. And the smells the air carries are so delicate and soothing."

The fire Feien tilted his head slightly to the side, and although it was subtle, his expression made it clear that he was pleased to be complimented.

"I really don't mind any season...so much. Its just that I'm not fond of the cold." He shrugged slightly, "And I like the heavy warm feeling of summer. There really ought to be a good large celebration in the middle of the season."

Arae sat thoughtfully. "I still remember the old rituals. Perhaps they could be adapted for our kind. Lughnasadh would take place around midsummer, a feast and games in honor of the Sun God's passing and the first reapings of the harvest." She rubbed a fingertip across her chin as she thought about it.

"Personally I still prefer Beltane, which is much closer than midsummer."

He was looking at her with an expression of child-like interest on his face. He'd heard some of the names of rituals like that, but nothing that made them at all familiar.
"What happens on Beltane?" Hadrian asked, leaning forward and watching Arae with wide golden eyes.

Arae grinned in good humor and she chuckled softly. "Well, for feien it would have a touch less impact, but it is the day that humans can set aside their vows to their mates, and may lie with whomever they choose til the dawn. Tis also a time when temporary mates are taken for a year and a day. Mostly it's a celebration of life and passion."

She spent a moment picturing the look on Aleric's face should she ever mention it to him. The rather noble and somewhat staid ancient would likely die of shock at such wild and flagrant physicalities.

Hadrian blinked, and looked to be considering that description. Apparently he was considering it pretty closely, because he looked after a moment almost as if he were blushing.
"Do they...I mean...Humans must not celebrate it anymore? And...feien could take vows couldn't they? I mean I never thought about it before..."

"Some humans still celebrate it, but a fraction of the numbers that used to. Religions have changed, modesty has been enforced, and spirits are not so free as they once were. It was a festival designed to replenish the species so that there would be a renewal of the population after the common deaths of the winter months. But as feien do not create new feien in the same manner, it would have a bit of a different meaning. Though it would be interesting to have a festival of creating blooms." Arae seemed to find the blushing endearing and she smiled softly.

"But with our current situation as it is, breeding is not open to such, but is controlled by those that took over the shop and in effect, our very existences."

There was a flickering change in Hadrian's expression, more then just his smile fading. It was something deep down and hidden under flippant cheer and childish wonder, and it was difficult to define.
"That." He said softly, "Seems like it could be called slavery."
His tone sounded as if he were idly pondering that, but he was looking out across the meadow with a little sort of frown.
He had heard the basic story of the shops reorganisation, from a letter from his mother. But it was all rumor and here-say so far. The more he heard about it, the more disconcerting it became, and not only because he had gained a certain distaste for 'government' herarchy from his mother.
"I would be a nice thing to celebrate, Arae." He said finally, looking back and her, smiling again, "You should figure out how to set it up."

"Perhaps...perhaps," she murmured, staring down into the darkness of the well, stretching her wings to let them warm over the stone. "I must confess to being concerned with this Fleet which has taken control of our species, but at the same time they take from us some freedoms, they are creating many more blooms than before. So our numbers are increasing. Which is a good thing." She sighs softly.

"I just wish we had the freedom to make a bloom and raise it ourselves. I miss having children to tend to."

Having never been denied the freedom to go and do what he wanted (or at least, not since childhood when he of course had to obey his mothers rules, which were admittedly mostly so he didn't set the house on fire), the idea of being denied any freedom at all was somewhat disconcerting.
Something else occured to him, however, and he looked at Arae curiously, "You...have had children before?"

A sad smile lilted on Arae's lips, and her gaze became unfocused as it turned inward to memory. "Oh yes, several, but they are all long since gemstones to time. I am what is referred to as an ancient. I have lived a long, long time, far beyond the normal lifespan of a feien, and until recently did so without any need for a bond. But after a long sleep, and the fading of magics on this world, I awoke with the need for a bond and to the knowledge that my many children are long gone from Gaia."

"Oh..." Hadrian said, faultering a bit. He'd sort of expected something like that...but now he felt very young and foolish.
"I'm sorry." he traced the top of the hot pebble with his fingertips, feeling a little awkward.

Arae reached over to pat his hand. "Do not fear, for they lived well and died well in the normal course of the cycle of birth and death. I do not mourn their passing." She gazed up at the sky. "I should return to the tower. Sajhiri will fret if I'm out after dark. It was a pleasure to meet you Hadrian. I can sometimes be found in the Fleet HQ if you care to seek me out another time." She rose and launched herself into the air with a parting wave.

Synopsis: Aleric and Arae ice skate and exchange gifts, and sentiments.
Participants: Aleric, Arae, and Averno
The Scene:

Aleric ignored the brisk winter wind as he headed towards Sajhiri's house. He had a small toy under his arm, one that Soho had picked out, and a slightly nervous look on his face. He was finally going to see Arae face to face.

It was so much easier writing than it was seeing face to face. But he was being foolish. He took a very calming breath and landed softly on the porch of the house. Then he glanced down at the stuffed penguin in his hold. A tiny laugh pulled at his lips as he shook his head.

It was the last time he let Soho do his shopping for him. But she had been so insistant that he hadn't had the heart to tell her that Arae most likely wasn't the... penguin type. Ice had saved him, though, whispering that she had sent another gift to Sajhiri as soon as she found out about his new relationship. He hoped they had gotten it.

A thump emitted from nearby as Averno landed on the porch. "Finally, loverboy gets it in gear. I thought you two might die of old age if you kept just writing to each other." She grinned.

"Your girlfriend is in the gardens, at the pond, ice skating. I have an aversion to bruising so she could use some company."

The darkness feien sauntered into the tower through a small door Sajhiri had installed just for the Feien and Silva Regia.

"Ice skating?" He asked belatedly. But she was gone before it came out, so he shrugged and took to the air to look for the gardens. He saw them after a few seconds, and headed for the small pond. Silva had gotten out the snowboard, but he hadn't said anything about ice skating. This would be... interesting.

He landed at the edge of the pond, waiting for her to notice him as he watched her skate. His breath hitched slightly at how beautiful she was. He had almost forgotten.

The ancient was sweeping across the frozen pond in swirls and twirls of elegant grace. Arae had managed to tie 'skates' to her feet, simple wads of cotton batting wrapped in Saran Wrap to keep her feet warm but her traction slick. She'd wrapped a thin strip of fuzzy "Santa fur" from a skirt Sajhiri had been making around her shoulders to keep her torso warm as she danced across the ice. Her hair whipped about her in the chill winds and her expression was transcendently joyful as she unfurled her wings to let the breeze propel her across the pond.

She'd yet to notice her suitor's arrival, and she was humming a holiday tune, her breath visible as she exhaled in the cold.

Resist was a wonderful thing, Aleric thought as he silently stepped onto the ice. Because even with it he was feeling a tiny bit chilled. But he didn't want to interrupt her fun. Not when she appeared to be so happy. He tried sliding in his bare feet, letting out a surprised laugh as they slipped out from underneath him and he fell backwards.

Still grinning he shoved himself back to his feet, bending his knees as Silva always yelled at him to do when surfing. He held out his arms to get a better balance, knowing he looked silly, but not too bothered by it.

Arae whirled at the sound of Aleric's surprised laugh, and her entire face lit up at the sight of him. She assisted his standing with a gentle gust of wind, directing it with a wave of her hand. She propelled herself over to where he was attempting to balance and offered her hands to him.

"It seems Christmas wishes DO come true, for I'd ardently been wishing to see you today, sweet Aleric!" Her smile was radiant.

He took her hands, still grinning happily. "And I you." He told her. "You're even more beautiful today than last time." He told her. "but I don't want to interrupt your fun! Maybe you can show me how not to fall?" If he could get this down he could show the boys and Soho! He was sure they would all enjoy a new sport.

Arae began to move backwards, carefully drawing him with her. "I shall do my best. For the most part, push one foot forward by turning your other foot sideways and propelling yourself off that. Try to keep your back straight, it will help you balance. And your wings can help a lot with that, which is an advantage we have over humans."

She watched him with a sweet expression of adoration on her face.

He started out, doing as she said, although a bit more awkwardly than she was doing. "I like sports." He told her. "But I never seem to catch on as quickly as the others do. Silva says we'll be using his surfboard for snowboarding. I'm looking forward to that."

"Surfboard? Snowboarding? I'm not sure what those things are. I was sleeping for so long...I think perhaps they came about when I was slumbering. They do sound like fun, though." Arae began to lead Aleric around the frozen pond slowly, giving him time to get his "ice legs" and find his center of balance.

"I have a gift for you. Well from Averno and I actually. It is something that belonged to her once, but she offered to let me give it to you, because I found it particularly fitting. I hope that does not offend."

"Gift? Oh! Right!" He said, so startled that his legs slipped out from under him again. He fell onto his bottom again, barely remembering to let go of her before he hit. Thankfully he was so tough that he didn't really notice. "I got you something as well, although I must admit, Soho chose it, so it's somewhat..." He paused, shaking his head. "Soho-ish." He finished. "I left it by the edge of the pond."

Arae knelt beside Aleric and she smiled softly, pushing his hair out of his eyes so she could look into them better. She leaned forward to press her lips to his forehead, her healing power flooding from her into him to ease any aches from the falls.

"Is that better?" She murmured quietly.

"Yes, thank you." He said, flushing ever so slightly. A tiny little smile pulled at his lips. "I'm afraid I'm so used to falling that I don't even notice half of the time. I'm extremely... resistant to pain."

He got to his feet slowly, then took to the air slightly, so he wasn't likely to fall again. "I'll go get it, before the snow makes it too wet." He told her, heading for the toy left on the ground. He came back a few moments, holding out the penguin to her.

He probably should have kissed her, but if Silva was any indicator the penguin would have been soaked by the time they were done.

Arae beamed at the sight of the toy and she gathered it in her arms, cuddling it to her. "Oh it's adorable, Aleric! I saw penguins in the zoo once, they were so cute and they gathered in such a familial manner, it was heartwarming. It's perfect, thank you!" She kissed his cheek before holding up a finger. "I'll be right back."

She launched into the air and through a tower window, to return moments later with something in her arms. She handed it over. "The colors reminded me of you, and the snow, that it was Christmas time when you wrote your first letter to me." Her smile was warm and open.

"It's beautiful, thank you." He said, shaking it. "I will treasure it." He smiled at her. "How have you been, Arae? It's been some time since we've gotten the chance to talk. Things have been... hectic, I'm afraid." He reached out to take her hand.

"I am far better than I was. I've managed to heal the damage done to myself and Averno from Cascati's poisonous cupcakes, but I'm still carrying a goodly amount of guilt over that time. I nearly killed Averno..I would have, had Sajhiri not interfered. I was so furious with her, all because in my altered state, I thought she wanted you." A blush tinted her cheeks and her hand warmed in Aleric's.

"Averno? With me? But--" He barely bit back the information about Silva and the feien in question. "I'm sorry that you thought that." He told her, tightening his grasp slightly in a comforting manner. He didn't dare trust the emotions he was reading, they could easily be his own infatuated feelings. But still they made him happy. "I am interested in only one female. A very beautiful, gentle, and loving one."

Arae grinned. "Well I'm rather sure you don't mean Averno, as she's anything but gentle."

Her expression turned serious. "And if it is me you speak of, you have made me the happiest feien who ever breathed. I've been alone for so very long, Aleric. My family and friends became gemstones ages ago and somehow I am still here. Until you, I never thought I'd love again."

"I do speak of you." He said. "I'm afraid I hesitate when it comes to relationships, and try to think of what is best for others before myself. I considered myself very daring for sending that first letter, afraid that you might see me as only a friend. But I'm glad that I did." He looked straight in her eyes, his feelings clear in his purple gaze.

"You are a friend, and you are more than that to me. And your words today are the greatest gift you've given me. You never need to hesitate with me, Aleric. I love you, and I accept you for who you are and what you do. Do we have little Soho's blessing, in that she helped you find a gift for me?" She brushed her fingers over his cheek lightly.

"When I first told her of you she asked me why I hadn't cuddled with you yet." He told her sheepishly. "She's quite the romantic, my little Soho. She's the one that's been delivering the letters for me. So yes, I do believe we do." To say the least. "You will have to meet her soon, now that she's a juvenile. But I'm afraid that lately she's been a bit preoccupied with talking to a... box."

" A box?" Arae queried. "What on Gaia is in a box that she would talk to?" The ancient's curiosity was piqued, but the words prior to those had more of a draw on her. "As to cuddling, why don't we go inside and sit by the fire in the family room and do just that?"

"That sounds good." He said with a smile. "She says there's a creature in the box, but that it's not a boy, and it's not a girl. And that it keeps trying to talk her out of her candycane. With Soho sometimes it's best not to ask, I'm afraid."

Arae laughed lightly. "I see. Well then, let's go curl up by the fire. Sajhiri made us some fleece blankets to wrap up in when it's cold." She tugged on his hand to guide him.

Date: 12.30.05
Location: The Silva Regia Tower's garden.
Synopsis: Aleric says farewell to Arae before leaving on his quest.
Participants: Arae and Aleric
The Scene:

Arae sat under the chill December moon in the garden of the tower and basked in the starlight. Her pond had remained unfrozen this week, after Sajhiri installed a heating element beneath it so the fish wouldn't be cold.

She gazed at her reflection in the still water, occasionally broken by a koi rippling through the image. She missed Aleric and hoped he was all right. Christmas had been a pleasant quiet affair, and was time well spent with her bond, but she ached to see her love again.

"This won't take long." Aleric said over his shoulder. He squared his shoulders and reminded himself once again that he wasn't a young boy. He was an ancient and should act like an adult.

But then why did he feel so damn guilty for this? He sighed and dropped down on Sajhiri's front porch, thinking he should knock. Then he felt a hint of magic from the gardens. He took to the air, flying around the back and stopping at the sight of her there. Just to commit the image to his mind before he left.

Arae felt a glimmering of power nearing and she looked up from her reverie. Her smile lit up the night as she spotted the hints of purple and gold in the darkness. "Aleric?" she queried softly, feeling her heart skip a beat in excitement.

"Each time I see you, you grow more beautiful." He said with a little smile and a shake of his head. "I'm not sure how, but millions would kill for that skill if the televisions are to be believed." He landed beside her, reaching for her hands with his smile firmly in place. "How are you, my love?"

His snowboard and staff were strapped together over his back, and a pouch of food hung from his waist. He was ready to leave as soon as this chat was over, but to mention that this soon would be rude.

Arae blushed softly at the poetic compliments from her paramour. She squeezed Aleric's hand gently. "You are too kind, but that is why I love you so, your kindness." She smiled a bit mischeviously with a twinkle in her eye "And your kissing ability of course."

It took her a moment before she noticed his accoutrements. "Are...are you going somewhere, Aleric?" She asked.

He hesitated. "Perhaps we should sit." He said, tugging at her hands as he sat down. "You see... I've been thinking very hard about some things. You know, that we're the only link the feien have left to the past as ancients..." Think, you idiot, how do you make this sound as if you're not rejecting her the moment you got her?

"I prefer to stand, I think..." Arae said softly. This didn't sound good to her, and she felt her stomach churn at Aleric's words. She forced herself not to show it on the surface though as she said quietly "yes, go on."

"And... well..." There he went again, feeling like an awkward boy. Slowly he got to his feet. "There is another link to our past, my love. One that remembers more than myself. I'm going on a quest." He took a deep breath.

"I want to bring a piece of our past back to the feien. Even if it's just a flute. Think of what will happen my love. When some young juvenile looks at such a beautiful piece of feien craft and realizes that they can do that, too." His eyes shone with the idea, his enthusiasm showing clearly. "When they realize that there's so much more to us than living as pets with human bonds. That we are a true culture! A people with a rich and deep history!"

Arae blinked and her breath escaped in a rush of relief. "Oh! Is that all? For a minute there I thought you were dumping me already." She chuckled. "We all must follow the paths we are set upon, Aleric. If this is a path you must walk, you do so with my blessing. Just be careful and take care of yourself. Come home to me when your path returns you here." She smiled gently.

He grinned as relief hit him. "I know that I might be gone for a while... Silva's already warned me of that. But I think I can figure out how to use the human's mail system to write you. And the phone, maybe. I'm not going alone, so it should be safer for me. But I felt I needed to tell you before I did anything... and..." He hesitated. "We should tell Averno, as well."

Arae looked a bit confused. "Tell Averno? I don't think she'll much care that you're going on a quest, my love. She'd likely try to convince you to take me, and the rest of the Menagerie with you to give her some peace and quiet, but that's about it."

She hadn't told her? Great... just great... "I suppose not..." He said hesitantly. "Silva and Soho are going with me. I hope it will help heal some of the wounds developed during the cupcake incident." He said, glancing over his shoulder and into the shadows where his family waited.

Maybe it was best that Averno wasn't told...

"Averno has been acting peculiar lately, and now you talk about telling her about your family heading out on a quest? What is going on here Aleric. Don't lie to me." She crossed her arms over her chest and peered at her beau.

"I was hoping she would be the one to tell you..." He said dryly. The last thing he wanted to do was tell her about Silva and Averno. "There might be... something... between your bond sister and my brother." He said with a slight shrug.

"SILVA!?" Arae laughed out loud. "Don't be ridiculous. Those two hate each other." She giggled. "Oh Aleric, you're so sweet, seeing romance everywhere." She kissed his cheek.

"I guess it does sound kind of ridiculous." He said, enjoying the kiss. He wasn't about to tell her about the scene on the porch. "But just to indulge me, love, would you tell her?" He asked, leaning his forehead against hers.

X

Arae smiled softly and stroked Aleric's cheek. "All right, I'll tell her. But you just remember to be safe, and don't take unnecessary chances, my love. I want you back in one piece, afterall. And take care of Soho." She notably left out taking care of Silva.

He smiled, kissing her briefly on the lips before pulling away. "I promise." He told her. "Nothing bad will happen to any of us."

Arae watched him depart, with a sinking feeling in her chest. She knew many a quester in her lifetime, and so very many of them died on the path. But she knew as well they could not be dissuaded, and that an ounce of encouragement and a reason to come home gave them all the more strength to survive.

Date: 12.25.05
Location: The Silva Regia tower
Synopsis: Christmas with the Menagerie!
Participants: Sajhiri's family
The Scene:

Sajhiri slumped into an overstuffed armchair. She'd spent most of the night setting out Christmas presents under the tree, filling christmas stockings, and making preparations for Christmas dinner. She was exhausted, but as she looked across from her at the wall of the family room, where dozens of photographs hung in gilded frames, she smiled and knew it was worth all the work to see her family happy when morning came.

She reached for the glass of milk and one of the cookies Rebecca left out for Santa. She'd help the big guy along with leaving a good impression on her toddler. She chomped heartily while watching the lovely glow of the blinking colored lights on the Christmas tree. Tomorrow night they'd have their ceremony with the nativity scene, after the crazed commercial side of the holiday subsided a little, and she'd remind her menagerie that she was there to care for them because The Fellow whose birthday was being celebrated assigned her to Gaia. The Seraph chuckled and raised the glass of milk in a toast to her Boss.

She must have fallen asleep in the chair, because she jolted awake to the sounds of a stampede. Or that's what it sounded like at least as the wild herd of her charges came rampaging down the stairs in the still dark hours of the predawn. A sleepy looking Sphinx cradled Rebecca in her arms as she apologized to Sajhiri. "She decided it was morning enough for Christmas, and she woke up everyone else," she explained.

Rebecca looked absolutely giddy as she reached out for her mother to take her in hand. Sajhiri scooped up the little redhead and kissed her nose. With a groan she caught a glimpse of the clock reading 6:00AM. "You couldn't wait til the sun was up at least, punkin?" she murmured.

Behind the sphinx, Saedare stood patiently, a smile bright on hre face at the sight of the presents strewn about, and several dozen stockings bursting to over flowing. Her wings flexed once before folding neatly behind her. "Good morning mother! And Merry Christmas!

Sajhiri beckoned the Aduthule over and hugged her warmly. "Merry Christmas to you too my dears." She still used the plural with her, still able to see Saevire's soul alongside Sedare's within the merged being.

"Where's my stuff?" Averno asked as she flew from stocking to stocking. The darkness Feien was dragging her co-bond, Arae, by the hand. Arae was yawning and looking half asleep still. "Did no one pay attention to the fact it's Sunday?" Arae grouse good naturedly. "We shouldn't be awake for at least two more hours on a Sunday."

Sajhiri grinned and gestured to the stockings for the two Feien. Arae woke up somewhat as she saw the one with her name embroidered on it. "Oh lovely!" she exclaimed. Averno climbed into her stocking and the sounds of shredding paper could be heard from within it.

Cervus smiled from his perch on the chandelier. "Happy Yule Sister Sajhiri!" he called from above. His cloak still concealed his changed form, the a hoof peeked out from the bottom hem now and again. Sajhiri smiled warmly at her ancestral fey. "And to you, little father." she murmured.

Rebecca pulled on her mother's hair and Sajhiri chuckled. The Sphinx began passing out stockings to the rest of the Menagerie, from Talaye, to Lija, to Gargoyles. The rending of Christmas wrap and a flurry of flying bows began to commence. Candy and dolls, toys and CDs, books and journals and DVDs piled up around the various inhabitants of the tower as the gifts were torn through. Oohs and aaaahs filled the air, and Sajhiri sipped a cup of coffee as Rebecca annhialated the packaging as each present was handed to her. Rubber duckies, dolls, and other toys abounded. She smacked a rattle against Sajhiri's knee, causing an involuntary reflex kick.

Saedare was engrossed in a new journal and an entire set of encyclopedias, as well as many other books and some lovely porcelain dolls. She smiled softly at the suede buckled pirate coat and felt a surge of joy within as her absorbed sibling squeeed with disembodied delight.

Averno studied the books she was given curiously. They were on fencing and swordfighting. A few DVDs about swordplay were there too, as well as a whole new set of furniture for the doll house she was inhabiting. Arae seemed delighted at the lime green inks, furnishings, and small portrait frames Sajhiri had given her. A promise of a portrait to be done of her and Aleric made her giggle and blush.

Cervus was blushing too, at the "World's Greatest Dad" tshirt and other gifts from his cursebreaker. Beneath the hood he smiled giddily at the thought of his impending fatherhood.

Finally, every bit of Christmas wrap was in trash bags, and toys and gifts all revealed. Baby Rebecca snuggled against her mother and drifted back to sleep. All of the menagerie looked ready for a late morning nap. Sajhiri smiled as she looked around her at her family. "Merry Christmas everyone..." she murmured with a warmth in her heart.

PART ONE- QUEST FOR VERASA'S KNOWLEDGE

Date: 01.12.05
Location: A forest in Upstate NY
Synopsis: Averno and Arae set out on a quest to rescue Silva, Soho and Aleric. They stop to rest somewhere in an Upstate NY forest.
Participants: Averno and Arae
The Scene:

The snowflakes stood out starkly against the black of the leathery wings wound into a ball under the pine tree. Averno huddled in the center of the protective shelter of skin and sinew, shivering in cold and in rage. She'd had a fight with Arae after finding out Silva had taken Aleric and Soho on some crazy quest that could get them all dead. Words were exchanged, and she ended up flying off, vowing to find him and kill him herself. She'd gone to the roof of the Headquarters for a while to cool off, watching her co-bonded trudge off herself into the deepening gloom of the winter night. She'd been harsh with Arae, who was trying hard not to panic over Aleric's long absence. She'd only told Averno to have a shoulder to cry on about him maybe being hurt or worse.

As the anger began to settle down, the darkness Feien began to worry herself. The fear that the trio had gotten in over their heads weas now outweighing her rage at Silva for not so much as saying goodbye... Or for that matter, not asking her to go with him. She dove off the roof and zipped back in through the feien-sized door to look at the bulletin board. Maybe she could find out where he went by scouring the quest notices there.

Her eyes skimmed over the notices, but she had a hard time remembering anything Arae had told her about what Aleric was questing for. After she'd mentioned Silva had gone with him all was an angry blur. All she could recall clearly was New York fit into the equation somehow. She saw one titled "Verasa's Knowledge" which indicated something of value in New York City, and she tore it off the board hastily.

Quote:
Verasa's Knowledge
Task: In an ornate chuch in New York City is a belltower, and hidden cunningly is a locked metal lockbox shut away somewhere - inside, a piece of jewellry you may find useful. Of course, not only do you have to find the lockbox, but you have to open it.

That had to be it, in her mind, and she hurried off. In her haste, she never saw the quest several spots below it, in Upstate NY, for the flute Aleric had spoken of.

She had gone home to Arae and insisted that the two of them go to rescue the trio from their own folly. Arae, in her worry for her lover, had agreed, assuming Averno had identified their location. They packed quickly, scribbled a note for their bond, and took off into the deepest cold of night.

They'd flown Northeast for days, both cold and miserable, one trapped in her anger, the other her worries. Few words were exchanged, and they rested very little, only stopping to eat and catch a few short naps. The further they went from Barton, however, the colder it became, and the more difficult it was to fly against the winds. Tonight the chill had made their wings too stiff to fly further. Thus it was that they wound up in a pine tree in the middle of the woods of upstate New York.

The branches above Averno rattled, dropping clots of snow down around her and onto her makeshift tent. She let out a yelp and leap to her feet, brandishing her cocktail rapier menacingly. In the green boughs layered with white snow it took her a moment to pick Arae out. The ancient climbed down from where she'd landed and proffered a few leaves of winter cress.

"It's edible and safe, kind of mustardy in flavor. There was some growing nearby." Arae murmured, settling down to nibble on her own leaves. The green-haired woman seemed less bothered by the cold than Averno, letting her wing talons hook over her collar bones like a clasp forming a sort of cloak.

Averno bit into a leaf and chewed it morosely. They were out of their own food supplies, so foraging had been their only resort. Fortunately, Arae claimed to have lived in the wilds for decades, away from humans, and could find them food. She was right about the mustardy flavor. It was a little like spicy lettuce. Not as good as something cooked and warm would have been, but it'd suffice. "Thanks" she managed around a mouthful of leaf.

Arae peered out through the shadows of the branches and frowned. "I think it best if we sleep somewhat high in the boughs tonight, Averno. I think the wildlife around here is agitated and hungry from deep winter. We aren't safe on the ground."

Averno grunted and patted her rapier. "I think I can handle it, but if you insist, we can climb up near the top." She swallowed down the last of the edible plant and rose, stepping out from under the tree and forcing her aching, cold wings to flap and give her some lift. She grunted against the pain and drove herself up near the top of the pine, settling several feet below it on a sturdy, wide limb.

Arae joined her and drew some twine from her small, makeshift pack; nothing more than cloth knotted tied to a broken-off bamboo skewer. She wound a length of it around the branch, then wound the ends around her and Averno's waists. "Just in case something knocks us off while we're trying to rest..." she intoned.

Averno almost mouthed off about her being a bit obsessive about this, but noticed the furrow in the ancient's brow and stayed silent. She was really concerned about this. Had she sensed something out there? Or had she seen something unusual while she was foraging? She leaned back in the crux of two branches, securing herself, and laid her cocktail rapier in her lap, gripping it in both hands. The purple was a stark contrast to subdued tones of the winter around it.

Arae settled in herself, though looking far more wary, but the ancient finally drifted into an uneasy sleep, the exhaustion of the hard travel and her near constant worry for Aleric and Soho draining her energies.

Averno frowned deeply, and pushed aside the question in her head that had haunted her since she left.

"Why do you care?" it seemed to insist to her.

She gritted her teeth and told herself "He didn't say goodbye."

"So?" her conscience seemed to accuse.

"I might never see him again, and he didn't care enough to say goodbye." she said to herself.

"Why should you care?" the nagging voice asked.

"Because I thought he...I thought he cared about me. Even a little, under all that bravado and snark," she admitted reluctantly.

"And this matters to you, why?"

"Because I think I love him." There, she'd admitted it to herself. She wasn't certain she knew what love was, but she'd been sick with worry after Arae's news, and before that she'd been depressed and angry over his not visiting her once since their snog session. With her self admission she relaxed a bit, the tension seeping from her as her denials waned. She drifted into a light sleep.

She had no idea that less than a quarter mile away, Silva and company were fighting for their lives as they tried to retrieve the flute they'd set out to find.

PART THREE- QUEST FOR VERASA'S KNOWLEDGE

Date: 01.15.05
Location: A highway near Syracuse
Synopsis: Averno and Arae stow away on a truck bound for NYC.
Participants: Averno and Arae
The Scene:

Averno and Arae spent a day healing up from their wounds. Fortunally, Arae's healing abilities hurried the process along, otherwise the bruising from their wild ride would have made flight very uncomfortable. The owl had given up after 20 minutes or so, choosing to go after less protected prey.

They left in daylight on Arae's insistence that the owl was nocturnal. Their rest breaks were becoming longer and more frequent. Neither of them was built for endurance and both were beginning to suffer from their extended journey and all its trials. They weren't even entirely sure if they were going the right way. All they had was a hand-scribbled map Averno had made from Sajhiri's keymap, and the sun to guide them.

Just when they were about to give up and turn back, they spotted a highway cutting through the area. They zipped along it looking for signs and found them at a rest stop full of semi's. There were truckers chatting with one another at picnic tables, and others sleeping. Averno peered at a small blue, white, and red sign. "I-90...ok that's good, that ought to take us to 87 which we can take down to New York City," she murmured as she poured over her map.

"Are we close yet? Is Syracuse near there?" Arae asked quietly as she perched on the large green sign heralding the upcoming city.

Averno blinked numbly for a moment or two. "No, we're nowhere near where we need to be." She sighed and gritted her teeth in frustration. This was taking too long. They were never going to find Silva in time to keep him out of trouble.

"Yeah, I'm hauling produce to Manhattan. I'm on a tight deadline though, so I can't rest too long here," muttered one of the truckers nearby. Averno's head snapped around and she peered at the speaker intently.

The man talking with him chuckled, "Yeah Jake, I know about those deadlines. I'm gonna catch a cat nap. Good luck on your run." The two men shook hands, and parted ways.

Averno grabbed Arae by the arm and dragged her in the wake of Jake. They crouched under the rear wheels of the semi as the trucker opened the back door to check on his cargo. With a grunt of approval, he lowered his eyes to jot down some information on a clipboard.

Averno and Arae zipped into the back of the truck and hid behind some crates of grapes. The smell of fresh fruit and vegetables made their stomachs rumble so loud they worried the man might hear. But he didn't, and he closed the doors, locking them in.

The pair let out a sigh of relief. There was a little bit of light coming through from the seams of the door. Averno grabbed a grape from the crate and sat in the paler bit of darkness to peel and eat it. "This ought to get us to Manhattan, which is part of New York City..." she said quietly. "And there's plenty to eat too!" The temperature controlled truck was a cool 55 degrees, but it was much better than the 15 degrees and snow outside of it.

Arae joined her sibling for their meal and wrapped her wings around herself. "We should look at sneaking on a plane or something to get home..." she murmured.

A plane, now that would have been a good idea. Averno grunted and nodded in agreement, feeling a bit sheepish that she hadn't thought of that in the first place. She was so upset and angry when they left, that planning thoughtfully went right out the window.

"Just get some rest. It'll be at least 6 hours or so to get us there." The pair curled up together for warmth and slept the sleep of the truly exhausted.

Date: 01.18.08
Location: The Silva Regia tower
Synopsis: Aleric and Silva come looking for Arae and Averno and learn they went after them
Participants: Silva, Aleric, Sajhiri, Rebecca, and Dodge
The Scene:

Silva growled under his breath, grabbing Aleric's arm and dragging him towards Arae and Averno's house. The other male had been out of it ever since he got that damn flute. It was enough to piss a feien off. At least if the feien was Silva, that was.

"I'm not quite ready for this, Silva." Aleric said. "I haven't properly learned how to play. If I go to Arae unable to play she might think I wasted my time--"

"I don't think she'll care, old man. And you're damn well creeping me out with your new... toy. Once you get around a bit of real T&A it'll knock you back to your senses." Silva said. At least he hoped that was what would happen. And it was a sign of how far gone Aleric was when he didn't b***h about the T&A comment. Silva pushed him forward. "There, go ring the bell."

Aleric stumbled through the air, his shoulder hitting the doorbell. Silva winced, mentally noting that that push was a bit too hard when the old man wasn't paying attention.

After a few moments some stumbling and cursing could be heard on the other side of the door. It opened, to reveal a rather exhausted looking woman with two babies in her arms. Well...one was a baby at least, the other kind of looked like a...lamb.

Sajhiri looked perturbed at seeing no one there at first glance. "Stupid kids pranking me again?" she muttered crossly. The little redhaired toddler on one hip giggled and pointed at Silva. "Budderfwy!!!!" Rebecca announced merrily.

The lamb was dozing peacefully in the crook of the woman's other arm.

"Excuse me." Aleric said, pulling away from the doorbell. "I suppose I should have checked the garden first." He said idly. It was like the sight of Sajhiri and the two young ones had startled him back into himself for the moment. "Is Arae home? I have something to show her."

"I'm not a--" Silva bit back a curse, remembering how often Ice had yelled at him for doing that in front of babies. But his scowl showed what he was thinking. "Butterfly." He finally said coldly as he chewed on his toothpick. "But I suppose I should talk to Averno while we're here. She here?"

Sajhiri blinked as Rebecca made grabby hands at Aleric's wings. She cooed at the pretty purple colors. "Two Budderfwies!" she announced. "Two Momma!" She looked up at her mother angelically.

Sajhiri chuckled. "Sorry, she's learning her numbers. Who may I ask is calling on Arae and Averno?"

Aleric smiled at the baby, moving forward. He wasn't worried about being hurt, after all. He was pretty tough for a feien. "My name is Aleric, and this is my bondbrother, Silva. We're Ice Queen's bonds." He announced semi-formally.

Silva just looked up at the house, wondering which window would show Averno peeking out at him... or worse, throwing something out at him. He hadn't told her he was leaving, after all...

Sajhiri chuckled. "Oh! Silva is it? I remember when you were just a little thing and came into the tavern. My you've grown. You've gotten so t-..." She paused. "Wait a minute...Silva and Aleric? Aren't you two supposed to be in New York City? Because Averno and Arae took off there after you, said you were in some sort of trouble and could use rescuing..."

Rebecca made a valiant attempt to grab Aleric by his waist with the full attention of stuffing him feet first into her mouth. She had a thing about tasting unknown objects.

Dodge stirred from his nap and yawned, showing rather healthy lamb teeth. His ears flicked as he watched Rebecca with half lidded eyes, happy for once she wasn't trying to pull his ears off.

Aleric jerked, flying backwards in shock at Sajhiri's words. He didn't even notice that he was evading Rebecca's grasp at the same time. "They did what?" He asked blankly.

"You're kidding me." Silva muttered. "Just how in the--" He bit back another curse. "Heck do they think they can help us?"

"That's not the point, Silva! They've put themselves in danger!" Aleric told his brother irritably. "I told Arae that I wouldn't let anything happen, but--"

Silva scowled, crossing his arms over his chest. But the way he was chewing on his toothpick showed just how troubled he was by this news. "Stupid brat." He muttered, thinking of Averno.

Sajhiri looked between the two Feien and she scowled at Silva. "I don't consider trying to help the people you care for to be bratty. I thought you and Averno didn't get along? She seemed to be the one insistent on going after you though. She seemed pretty angry. Arae just seemed worried for your health. They thought you were headed to some place in New York City."

Rebecca grumped at being foiled in her grab attempt, and the toddler turned instead to reach for one of Dodge's ears. The lamb let out a little bleat and Sajhiri unconsciously untangled the ear from her daughter's fist, replacing it with a pirate rubber ducky from the pocket of her sweater. Rebecca made a gleeful noise.

"We were, for a little while." Silva said idly. "But we've already finished the quest." Images of Averno getting ripped into pieces by rabid squirrels flashed through his head. It had been bad enough when Soho had almost been killed, but at least he had been there!

"And it's bratty when she knows damn well I've been doing stuff like that since I was a kid. She's not strong enough to go up against that bear..." He cursed again and turned. "Come on, Aleric, we've got to go back to New York." He muttered.

"A Bear? In the middle of Manhattan? Where's she going, the zoo? I thought she was going to some kind of belfry or clock tower or something." Sajhiri asked in confusion.

Rebecca stuffed the ducks head in her mouth and chewed on it contentedly. Dodge reached up a paw to rub his ear gingerly and snorted in disdain at his 'sister'.

"Manhatten?" Both males asked blankly.

"A clock tower?" Silva repeated.

"It seems..." Aleric started out with a relieved smile. "That they got the wrong quest."

"Thank God." Silva muttered, running a hand over his face.

"When do you think they'll be back?" Aleric asked with a little smile. "I was hoping to show Arae my flute." He held out the flute in question.

Sajhiri blanched at Aleric showing Arae his 'flute' but then he proffered the real instrument and she looked relieved. "Oh, um...well if they went to the wrong place, I guess they'll look for you for a bit then come home. Unless they decide to find the Verasa whatchamajiggy themselves. So maybe longer. I don't even know how they plan to get there. If they're flying themselves it'll take weeks. They're fairly smart girls though, maybe they'll take a plane or something. So in that case, a few more days? They left almost a week ago."

Rebecca now made grabby hands at the flute. "Shiny momma! Shiny!" she insisted. Dodge butted his head against Sajhiri's shoulder impatiently. He wanted lunch.

"Alright." Silva said. He was hiding his relief, but Aleric could feel it. "Then we should get going."

"Thank you." Aleric said, pulling the flute out of reach of the child. "We appreciate it."

"I'll let them know you dropped by, " Sajhiri offered as a farewell. "Ok, ok Dodge! Come on, I'll go warm up a bottle for you. Yes bex, it's shiny, I know." She looked frazzled as she closed the door and navigated her way back down the hall c** obstacle course of discarded toys.

Silva snorted as they started to fly away. "Hell, I'm more than willing to show Averno my flute, as well."

"But you don't have a flute, Silva." Aleric said in confusion.

"Damn asexual bodies."

PART FOUR - QUEST FOR VERASA'S KNOWLEDGE

Date: 01.19.08
Location: The Bell Tower of Riverside Church, Manhattan, NY
Synopsis: Averno finally finds the object of the quest! Chaos ensues!
Participants: Averno, Arae, a legion of nasties, an old bell, a riddle, some jewelry, and a few departed feien.
The Scene:

Averno leapt off the top of the taxi cab and alighted on the street sign, shivering a bit from the cold. She doublechecked the writing on the perpendicular surfaces and seemed satisfied. "West 119th street and Riverside Drive. This is the place, Arae."

Arae perched on a mailbox and looked up at the towering structure of the gothically ornate Riverside Church, a New York City landmark."Indeed, and that is one very, very large church, Averno," she noted.

The darkness feien looked up from her piece of parchment where she'd scribbled the addresses of every ornate looking church with a bell tower from a visitors guide. She'd managed to wriggle inside of a closed newstand late on their first night in the city and copied down the addresses as best she could. The last few days had been a blur of harried moments grabbing onto passing vehicles to get to the streets and avenues they had to reach. Being so small in such a big place was exhausting.

All of the addresses on the parchment were crossed off now except one, and they had just arrived there. "If they're not here, I don't know what more we can do, Arae." She shoved a curl of sodden hair behind one pointed ear. It didn't really snow in the city, instead it was kind of a sludgy weather, leaving her hair and spirits sodden. They'd not found any sign of Silva or his little family at any of the prior stops.

Arae smiled grimly. "They have to be here, they have to. Come on, the bell tower is terribly far up. And it's huge, if they're somewhere inside it we have a lot of work to do."

The sun was beginning to set as the pair began flying in small spurts up the side of the enormous church tower. They rested from time to time on the ledges jutting out from the sides of the majesticly designed edifice.

Averno at last landed on the open nave of the belltower, over 300 feet above the ground below. She grabbed a wobbling Arae by the wrist as she landed beside her and almost toppled back off, hauling her to safety. "Careful there, lady," she grunted out.

"Thank you..." Arae panted. She blinked into the gloom of the nave and brushed herself off, wrinkling her nose. "It..kind of stinks up here, doesn't it?"

Averno sniffed and grimaced. She nodded her head. "Sulfur or something. Gross. But it wouldn't surprise me to find Silva in a place like...hey...I sense something!" She narrowed her eyes and hopped down onto the floor of the tower. Her magical detection was going wild, and she began moving in a pattern to try and discern the direction of the sensation. "It's this way, come on!"

The pair of fairies crept along the maze of gears, wires, chains, pullies, and weights that controlled the 74 bells in the church's carillion. The light continued to dim as the sun sunk below the horizon making it tough for them to see.

Averno approached one of the many bells and stood beneath it. It was smaller than the rest, the kind that would produce a high, musical note. It strangely looked much older than the rest, in fact, older than the church it hung in. "Silva?..." she called upwards, towards the sense of magic power and the slight shuffling sounds. "Is that you? Are you all right?"

Arae joined her. "Aleric? Soho? Is that you up there? It's Arae and Averno, do you need help?"

The two paused and listened to the sounds of movement above them in the darkness. The hair on the back of their necks stood up as their queries were replied to with an unearthly shriek. From the blackness above countless dark figures descended upon them, mistaking the winged beings for the insects normally preyed on...

... Bats by the hundreds, who called the tower home by day, and who had left the foul smelling guano which was even now stinging their eyes and noses. Averno dove behind a gearbox, propelled forward by a furry, leathery body slamming into her. She rolled over, kicking and screaming as the bat landed on top of her, little fangs looking like daggers to the feien. It thrashed, tangled in some cables, and the fairy blasted it with a bolt of dark energy. She scrambled out from under the stunned creature and drew her rapier. "ARAE!" she shouted. "WHERE ARE YOU!?"

"H-here!" the ancient's voice cried out. She was standing atop a pulley, ducking as a half dozen bats divebombed her in turn. With a growl she raised a hand and sent a gale force wind in their direction, making them spiral out of control. They slammed bodily into some of the bells, setting off some dim chiming from their lack of mass.

Averno scrambled over the floor, not liking her chances in the air. "We need to direct them out of the tower with your wind! Do what you can, I'll keep them off you!" She jabbed the plastic weapon into the furred belly of an approaching bat. The creature shrieked and wheeled away, scattering several of it's bretheren in its flight.

Arae swallowed hard and nodded, trusting in her sibling to protect her. She summoned up every ounce of her magic and began shoving the bats away with her winds, corralling them towards the open sides of the nave and out of the tower. Once outside, they seemed to lose interest in the strange insects, in favor of the others in abundance in the nighttime skies.

Averno spun and parried the fangs of a bat with her blade, swinging around one of the pulley ropes to avoid another. She kicked one away from Arae before skewering it with the sharpened plastic. "Keep going!" she shouted encouragingly.

Arae continued, focusing her efforts on the larger masses first, then the stragglers as the crowd thinned. Finally, the rest of the creatures lost interest and departed, leaving two breathless feien, and a score of dead or dying bats on the floor below them.

Averno wiped the ichor off her blade on the furred body of a dead flying rodent. "That's a damn fine spell you have there, lady.." She noted. How many times had it saved her on this trip already?

Arae smiled in exhaustion. "Go see if you can find them, I'm going to rest down here for a little bit, and keep lookout in case the bats come back."

Averno nodded, not bringing up the fact she could tell Arae was too tapped out to climb into the bells. She left her sister there and paced back over to where the magic had been sensed. The presence was still there. She flapped her wings and floated up inside the bell it was radiating from. The clapper seemed to be the source. It was oddly shaped for a bell clapper, the end was long and thin, rather than round like most she'd seen. And...there was a latch...and hinges.

She frowned. This was a box! A lockbox! She frowned at the strange keyhole. It was tiny for anyone but a feien, round in shape but seemed to curve a little ways inside. She looked up to see if anything might fit it, and spied an inscription inside the bell. "Only those who best the denizens of the bellfry may find the key to applause."

She grimaced and pondered the words. Bellfry... another way to say bell tower, but why not just say tower unless bellfry had more meaning. Like bats in the bellfry. Bats! The key to applause...applause meant clapping, and the lockbox was the bell's clapper!

She streaked back downwards to the floor and one of the bodies. She examined it closely. The fangs...a fang was the right size and shape for the miniscule keyhole! She pushed the maw of the bat open and used her rapier to pry out one of the fangs. With her bloody trophy in hand she flew back up to the lockbox and carefully inserted it.

A clicking noise sounded, and the latch released. Hinges creaked as their springs slowly pushed the clapper open. A soft ticking sound reverberated through the box as Averno leaned over to look inside. Within the container were three items, most notably a torque, silver with gold accents, the ends carved in the likeness of bird heads.

Beside it were a pair of gemstones, one pyramid-shaped with a heart of fiery colors, not unlike the sunset had been. The other was a rich royal purple stone, shaped like a heart.

Averno reached in and grabbed all three items, pulling back just in time. The lid snapped down with a resounding CLANG! and the lock reset, pushing the fang out and to the floor.

Averno swallowed hard. "That explains how a pair of feien got trapped and died in there..." she murmured, looking at the pair of gems mournfully. If she'd not brought Arae with her...if she had climbed in instead of reaching over. If Arae had climbed in with her...the trap would have had more victims to make gemstones out of. She felt her heart lurch, a reddish stone and a purple one...could they be Silva and Aleric?!?!? She fought back tears and the sensation of panic.

She flew back to where Arae was resting, and handed her the purple gem. "i...there was a box, it was trapped...I think maybe..." She held up the other gem as well. "They might be..." She choked up and couldn't speak further.

Arae's face went ghostly pale at the sight of the stones. "Oh sweet merciful air please don't let it be them. All for a stupid flute!? Oh Aleric, I'm so sorry I didn't stop you." Tears slid down the ancient's face as she sobbed.

Averno clutched the pyramid stone to her chest and shook uncontrollably. "Silva, I didn't get to tell you...wait a minute...did you say flute?" She looked to Arae questioningly.

Arae wiped at her eyes and nodded. "He was questing for an ancient flute"

Averno let out a relieved laugh. "Son of a b***h! We took the wrong quest from the board, Arae! Verasa's Knowledge is a necklace, look!" She proffered the item to her co-bonded.

Arae blinked as she looked at the torque, then she laughed. "You mean, all this time, we've been in the wrong place entirely? Oh thank the breeze for that!" She laughed musically and hugged Averno. "I thought we'd lost them!"

Averno returned the hug and sighed. "Still doesn't explain who these poor things were, but you can keep that one, for helping me do this." She fingered the torque then slid it around her neck. She felt magic tingling around her.

"Here's an idea...why don't we take a plane home? I'm pretty sure the boys must be back by now." Verasa's mighty wisdom was already making improvements in her life.

Date: 01.23.06
Location: The Barton Airport
Synopsis: Aleric and Silva show up to greet a returning Arae and Averno.
Participants: Averno, Arae, Silva and Aleric
The Scene:

Arcus, a colorful Talaye male, delivered a message to Ice's House addressed to Silva and Aleric.

Message

Hey fellas,

I got word from Averno that she and Arae are ok, and will be returning home via Flight 1462 landing at Barton airport at 8:23 AM on Monday. I thought you might want to know.

~Sajhiri

Arae zipped out through the closing boarding door, ruffling the airport employee's hair in the wake of her passing. Averno watched in amusement from where she was lounging on a passenger's laptop bag, where they'd slung it over their shoulder. Arae hadn't wanted to get that close to the human passengers. The pair of fairies had spent most of the flight trapped in an overhead storage compartment so as not to be seen.

Averno flitted off the man's luggage and alighted beside her sister on the now-empty podium where boarding passes were taken from passengers. "I don't know what the big deal is. It's not like any of these people really pay attention to us, Arae. They're coming to Barton, they're expecting to see crazy stuff."

Arae grimaced. "Better safe than sorry..." she murmured.

"Put the damn thing down." Silva muttered as he dropped down on one of the waiting chairs in the airport. He and Silva had dragged out of bed so damn early in the morning that he wasn't sure he had slept at all. The injured rat had taken him over an hour, and then there had been--well he hadn't gotten to bed until two or three the night before. And here Aleric was with that damn flute again--

"I'm going to show Arae." Aleric said. "Not play it."

"Thank God." Silva muttered. "What time is it?" He asked, looking around for a clock.

Averno hitched the stick on her shoulder to a more comfortable position. To it was tied a cloth bundle which looked relatively heavy. Arae carried a similar bundle. The two of them almost looked like a pair of hobos, especially with the assortment of bandages and the scrapes, bruises, and scratches covering them.

"Sajhiri said she wasn't going to be able to make it here to pick us up. She had some sort of appointment for the kids. So we're on our own getting home." Averno grumbled.

Arae sighed a bit forlornly. "Can we ride on a taxi again? My wings are aching from all the travel."

Averno snorted. "How many taxis do you think fly out into the middle of the woods in Barton? We might be able to hitch a ride part way, but we are going to have to fly to the tower, Arae."

Arae nodded glumly and her wings twitched as if already protesting the flight to come. "Well lets find a place to rest for a little bit first, so I can heal up some more of our wounds."

Averno couldn't argue with that, and she headed towards the waiting area.

"There they are." Silva said, not moving. He figured they would find them soon enough. Or at least Averno would find him. Besides, he had a b***h of a headache.

"Oh..." Aleric said blankly. "They look to have had a hard time of it..." He got to his feet and took to the air, heading for them with a wave.

Arae caught sight of the movement coming towards them and she startled for a moment. The attacks of the owl and the bats had left her a touch wary of flying things. But recognition glinted in her eyes as the waving figure drew nearer. "Aleric!" she called out, relief evident on her face. She rushed towards him. "Thank the 4 winds you're all right! I was so worried!" For someone so concerned about him, she certainly looked to be the worse for wear of the two of them.

Averno watched the reunion with a small smirk. The smirk faded as she spotted a glimpse of crimson amid the chairs. She looked a bit surprised to see Silva there, and she couldn't hide the relief in her own expression for a moment. The bruised and battered fairy moved to alight beside him on the chair. "I see you made it back ok," she noted.

"Better than you did, it looks like." Silva said, reluctantly opening his eyes and reaching out. "'C'mere, I'll fix you up a little before you yell at me." He had almost gotten back to sleep there, dammit!

"Arae, my love, perhaps you should sit down? I can heal some of your wounds." Aleric said, a look of worry on his face as he took in all the damage done to her. "And you can tell me how your quest went. Did you find anything?"

Arae hugged Aleric as tightly as she could without wincing from the pain. "I've healed us somewhat, but I've been too weak to do much. I had to use a great deal of my magics to fend off the owl and the bats, and to get us up to the bell tower. I'm exhausted, but I'm glad to be home." She smiled weakly at her lover and then brandished her bundle. "Averno found what she was seeking and more." She unwrapped the package to reveal a purple heart-shaped gemstone. "At first I feared it was you...that you'd perished on your quest. Then we realized we were in the wrong place."

Averno opened her mouth, looking as if she were about to verbally blast Silva into next week, but she closed it again at his offer. She sidled closer and nodded her permission to heal her. Around her throat, a silver and gold torque rested, it's magic like a beacon to those able to sense such things.

"Nice necklace." Silva said, his eyes still heavy lidded from lack of sleep as he touched her waist. His magic flared in a well-used healing spell, which he held just a little longer than was necessary. "That your quest item?" And what did it do? If it took her mind over as well, he swore he would do something violent. Stupid artifacts.

"Oh..." Aleric said, looking at the gem in wonder for a moment. "I suppose that must have been... startling." He finished lamely. Although he was pretty sure his gemstone wasn't a heart, but he wasn't about to tell her that. He reached out to take her hand, already starting his healing spell. He hated to see her in pain.

Averno's fingers brushed the torque lightly for a moment and she nodded slowly. "Verasa's Knowledge..." she murmured. "I'm not entirely sure what it does yet. But it was pretty enough to get at least 2 Feien killed trying to retrieve it." She straightened as the healing made the aches fade and unwrapped the pyramid shaped, fiery-looking gem. "Arae has the other one. They were caught in a trap which contained the necklace," she murmured. "Thought it was your sorry a** for a minute. But Arae realized it was the wrong quest where there was no flute."

Arae smiled softly as she was healed. "I am just relieved to know you made it back all right. Did you find the flute, love?" she asked curiously.

Aleric hesitated. Just slightly, not enough to notice unless you were used to his manners. Then he nodded. "I did." He said as he held it out to her. "This is Ellymee's song."

"There's no yellow on me, princess." Silva drawled as he glanced at the stone. "Huh..." He said thoughtfully. "So it's yours, too?" She had come back from her quest with a hell of a lot more than he had.

Arae's breath caught at the beauty of the flute. She traced a fingertip over it lightly. "It's remarkable, Aleric. A true lovely artifact. Have you determined what it does, yet?" She smiled brightly, wrapping the gemstone back up to keep it from getting dusty from the ventilated airport systems.

Averno spread her index and middle finger to point at Silva's eyes. "Your eyes are yellow, "she pointed out. "And the other gem was purple, so it looked an awful lot like you two had gotten yourselves killed." She wrapped the gem back up carefully. "Yeah it's mine too. Though I gave Arae the other for her helping me out." She frowned.

"I'm glad you're back and all, but I owe you a major kick in the ear for taking off without even saying goodbye. What if you had gotten killed?" She looked at him with the glimmerings of her anger returning.

Silva thought about it for a moment, wondering if he should lie or not. "Hell darlin, it takes more than a little trip to get me killed. Thought I'd be back before you noticed." He half-lied easily. Sure he could have died. But hell, that happened on every trip that he took. He'd rather she be pissed at him when he was gone than sorry.

"I'm starting to believe that it imparts emotions." Aleric said hesitantly, thinking of what had happened to Silva. "That the player's emotions are translated to the people around him." He added, more to explain it to himself than her.

Averno frowned, the torque detecting the minor lie dancing off Silva's lips. She didn't understand how she knew it wasn't the truth, she just knew. "Liar." She stated. "That's not the reason. So why did you go without saying goodbye. Tell me the truth, Silva. I almost got myself killed trying to save you because you didn't have the decency to let me know where you were going and when you expected to be back."

She was going to have nightmares about owls and bats for a long...long time.

Arae's eyes widened. "Oh my...that could be extremely useful in stopping fights or cheering sadness or...well many things. It could be dangerous too, though, Aleric. You should take care with it. Control over the emotions of others is somewhat manipulative."

"Yes... yes, you're absolutely correct." Aleric said, reaching for the flute. "I don't think Silva was very happy with how it worked, either." He said, looking down at the flute with a slight frown.

Silva's eyes opened fully and he looked at her for a long moment before smirking. "You caught me." He said. "I didn't tell you because I'd rather have you pissed at me if I died." He said honestly.

Averno blinked at Silva a couple of times. It took a few moments for her mind to process his admission, regardless of the additional wisdom the torque imbued her with. For a second the fact he'd rather have her angry at him if he died sounded sweet. Then she moved to slug him hard in the shoulder. "What an a*****e way to think, Silva. People mourn for a reason, it lets them get over it and move on. Anger would only wind up making me feel guilt for the rest of my life for being angry at a dead man."

Arae hmmmed softly. "Perhaps we could do some research and find out just what it may have been used for in the past. That might give us a clue as to the beneficial or sinister nature of it."

Aleric shook his head. "Perhaps it might be better not to know in this case." He said hesitantly. "If I use it, knowing that it was once used to manipulate others, I might be tempted--" He stopped. "Or someone else might be tempted, to use it in ways that aren't proper again." He tried to make it sound logical, regardless that it was an instinctive decision.

"But if I start out with the belief that it can only be used to help, like I have right now, then I won't think of other uses for it." It was his nature, more or less. To think of the good in things and people. He even saw Silva like that.

"Then it's a good thing I didn't die." Silva said, looking at the spot she had hit and trying not to laugh. "You aren't very good at that." He added.

Averno scowled at Silva. "No, I'm not, which made it that much more idiotic of me to go after you. I was attacked by an owl, and then by some seriously ticked off bats. If Arae wasn't with me and couldn't manipulate winds, I'd be dead. Then how would you have felt?" She asked poutily.

Arae rubbed her chin. "Yes, but if it might be harmful even if used for the intent of good, isn't it better to know that, Aleric? What if it does some unknown harm to the person who uses it?"

"I'm sure it won't." Aleric said, finally looking at her. "I'm sure that whoever created it wanted it to be used to help. It hasn't affected me adversely. But why don't you tell me of your quest? You seem to have gone through a lot on your trip." He reached for her hand again.

"It would have pissed me off that you didn't trust me to take care of myself." Silva said bluntly. "I've been doing this kind of stuff a lot longer than you have. And at your level of strength you very well could have gotten killed." His head was starting to throb again.

Arae slipped her hand into Aleric's, but she looked concerned. "Or it could have been secreted away for so long to prevent it from being used, my love. We have know way of knowing. But I am glad you're all right. I missed you terribly." She pushed a lock of lime green hair behind her ear. "Our quest was...unpleasant at best, deadly at worst. We nearly died several times. And we could have easily fallen into the trap that killed whatever feien these gems used to be."

Averno snorted. "You're not invincible, Silva. And I thought I had a right to worry about you. As for my strength getting me killed, then why don't you do something about it and help me build up my strength? Because if you DO get yourself killed on one of these idiotic adventures of yours, I'm going to need to protect myself. Especially if that creep that attacked me way back when in the tavern ever hunts me down again."

"I doubt he's still alive." Silva said bluntly. "Guys like that don't last very long. But fine. I'll bulk you up." He smirked. "For a price."

"My love, I'm so sorry that you went through all that." Aleric said, looking shocked by her confession. "I wish that I could have been there to help."

Arae grimaced and she moved to embrace Aleric. "There was an owl that wanted to make us a meal, and bats, so many bats. It was terrifying. But we prevailed, and I learned I'm more capable than I thought of defending others. And Averno truly cares about me, and about Silva." She looked over her shoulder at her sibling and the shadow feien. "I hope he doesn't make her regret her feelings, Aleric."

Averno arched a brow. "What price would that be, Captain Happy?" She settled the gemstone in her lap, leaning over it a bit. Her weariness was apparent, this trip had taken a great deal out of her. But she was surprised at her own courage to make the journey, and that which she exhibited in crisis situations. She wasn't the fragile thing she'd always seen herself as.

"Mmm... It's too early for me to come up with something just yet." Silva replied. "But when I do I'm sure I'll enjoy it." He yawned, then stretched his arms over his head and got to his feet. "But hell, let's get you home. You look like you had a run in with a rabid cat and your hair is messed up."

Aleric hugged her back, closing his eyes slightly as he took in the fact that she didn't trust the flute, either... Maybe Silva was right...

Arae hugged him close, comforted by the feeling of his arms around her. "I am so glad to be home," she murmured softly.

Averno nodded to Silva and she rose, stretching her wings tentatively, then relaxing when she could see the pain was gone. "Thanks for the healing. Arae was pretty tapped out." She tied the bundle back to the stick and hefted it onto her shoulder. "Do me a favor and don't let Sajhiri know how rough of a time we had. She's up to her eyeballs in stuff, I don't want her fussing over me."

"Won't say a word." Silva said before reaching for her. "Find something you can use for weights tomorrow. I'll be by sooner or later."

"I'm glad you're home as well, my love." Aleric whispered, feeling just a hint of guilt, as if he had betrayed her. But that was ridiculous... right?

Averno nodded wearily before she leaned in and pressed her lips to Silva's. "Thanks for coming here to make sure I was ok. It's nice to know you did think of me once in a while." She grinned mischeviously.

Arae murmured "Lets go home, Aleric. I need a hot bath and a warm bed and a good 2 days of sleep."

Silva took to the air after the brief kiss and looked at her. "Think you can fly? Or will I have to carry you?" He asked, only half teasing.

"Of course, my love." Aleric said as he took to the air as well. "If you need help flying, I'm here for you."

Averno grimaced. "Though I hate to admit it, either you carry me or I call Sajhiri to send Caelestis or Maleficent to carry me home. I don't think I can make it."

Arae smiled warmly. "I can think of no one I'd rather lean on or would trust more to never let me fall."

Silva nodded, moving closer to slip one arm under her legs and the other behind her back. She was tall, but he was taller, so it worked well enough. "I picked up a little more speed while we were on our quest." He mentioned idly. "I'm almost as fast as Soho."

Aleric wrapped one arm around Arae's waist, giving her as much support as she wanted. "Then let's go home." He said softly.

Arae happily followed Aleric's lead, though at the edges of her mind, the purpose of the flute irritated her. She would have to think on it again later, after she could rest.

Averno wrapped her arms around Silva's neck, idly touching an ear tip with a faint smile. She then nestled against him and was soundly asleep before he even got her out of the airport.
