Contra-bass clarinet would be hell.
For some reason in my mind the quints keep coming up. I guess not because they're heavy, but more cumbersome. I remember one of my friends had to go through a revolving door with them because there was no handi entrance.
It was funny as hell.

I would have to say that the trombone is by far the hardest instrument to march with. It isn't that heavy, but unlike other instruments, you HAVE to do horn angles. If you don't keep your horn up, you hit people. There are some moves where your horn is almost straight up so that you don't hit the person in front of you. Also, you can't empty your spit during the show because you can't reach your spit valve while at attention. Towards the middle of the show, the spit starts to build up around the mouth piece. Eventually you start drooling, with the spit dripping off your chin creating a line of spit down your shirt. Ah, the joys of playing trombone.

I would have to say flute. It is really hard to keep the flute perpendicular to the ground and sliding is extremely painful and hard. I have also had to march trombone. I found that hard too but marching with a flute hurts a whole lot more

I found that hard too but marching with a flute hurts a whole lot more Try marching trombone when you can barely write without being in pain. I injured my right shoulder during the middle of the marching band season last year, but I kept on marching. I could march the show fine because of the adrenaline, but afterwards I was in a lot of pain.

Baritones that DON'T rest on your shoulder are the hardest in my opinion. But I agree completely with you on the spit thing. If you can't blow it out, suck it back in! blaugh Or let it drip, whichever. xd

laughingpiggy I've never actually marched it, but I play it in concert band. Marching a contra-bass clarinet would suck. You can't see a thing in front of you cuz the neck goes up, and then down marching with a contra would suck. but all our bass clarinet and contra players just march with clarinets. I would have to say the most akward one to march with would be a bass drum maybe? I've never tried it, but it looks akward. sousaphones really aren't that hard to march with. at least once you're used to it. but the first couple of days I was marching with my sousaphone it was killer on my back and shoulders.

I've got two. Baritones are hard to march with since those things are heavy and holding them up for about 10 minutes is insane! The other is the Tuba/Sousaphone (my instrament) 'cause you can't get your chin too high and any slight movement you do with your body can change the horn angle. And lateral slides (when you walk sideways) it's so hard 'cause you've gotta turn ALL the way around! Try it and you'll see

definitely the tuba.
and not the sousaphone, i mean a concert tuba played on the shoulder. those are a b***h to march with.
our marching band uses those instead of sousas and they're all beasts because they have to hold it up.... attention must be horrible gonk
