#88 Grimer User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name "Grimer" comes from the word grime. In this context, a grimer is someone who grimes, such as Scyther means someone who cuts. It could also be a play on the name Slimer (the green ghost who slimes people in Ghostbusters). Its Japanese name is a play on べとべと betobeto, the word for "sticky". Grimer evolves into Muk, which has the same sludgy theme. It loves sludge and anything particularly foul (hence its Stench ability).

Poke'dex Entry: Grimer is composed primarily of putrid, hardened sludge and grime. It smells incredibly foul, and can influence the abandonment of entire cities due to its polluting nature--even weeds don't grow where a Grimer has appeared. It likes hanging around Team Rocket for some reason.

Grimer thrives in filthy areas, such as factories, garbage dumps, sewers and polluted water systems. It survives and matures by sucking up polluted sludge that is pumped out of factories, adding toxic waste to its already toxic girth. It enters sewers and other areas with great ease due to its rubbery and semi-viscous body; for example, it can enter barred-off areas by slipping between the narrow bars. If you stick your hand in Grimer, it will be very hard to get it out.

It is unlikely that Grimer has any internal organs, as it was brought to life from sludge. It is believed to have originated from a polluted seabed. Another theory is a lab accident in a factory.

If Grimer gets attacked and gets split in half, it will either put itself back together or duplicate into more Grimers, meaning that it reproduces asexually. New Grimer are also formed from bits of sludge that Grimer leaves in its trails. Grimer also tend to fuse together, creating new poisons. Both of these tend to worsen its stench.

#89 Muk User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: "Muk" is a derivation of the word "muck", meaning dirt or slime, as per its body structure and appearance. Its Japanese name is a play on べとべと betobeto, the word for "sticky".

Poke'dex Entry: Muk is a living manifestation of sludge and waste. Muk thrives in toxic waste and garbage. It inhabits any polluted area; including abandoned factories, garbage dumps and sewers. It is said that its smell is comparable to that of reeking kitchen garbage, especially during hot summers.

Muk itself is also a source of pollution. As Muk slides across the ground, it leaves behind a trail of highly poisonous sludge. Muk and Grimer are known for traveling into water and polluting it and killing plants with their sludge. Muk could be considered antagonistic of Suicune, a Pokémon with the ability to purify dirty or polluted water. It can also be considered antagonistic of Celebi, which can bring dead plants back to life.

Muk's thick, sticky sludge can be used to trap foes in battle. Muk can Body Slam the foe, entangling them in its sludgy belly. It can appear suddenly, ensuing panic.

#90 Shellder User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name "Shellder" originates from the word "shell" and possibly "shelter", as Shellder protects itself by hiding in its shell. Shellder is based on the clam. It is a bivalve Pokémon that loves to spit in its foes' faces during battles. Its semi-exclusive attack Clamp can damage foes multiple times and prevent them from escaping.

Poke'dex Entry: Shellder is a cheeky Pokémon; it constantly pokes its tongue out at anybody, whether friend or foe. It will also spit on foes. This tends to antagonize enemies into a rage.

Its shell is very strong, apparently harder than a diamond, though only made of a single, smooth layer; unlike Cloyster, who has a thick, rugged and multi-layered shell. Shellder becomes vulnerable when the enemy can attack its insides.

When not protecting itself in battle, it will attack by squirting water at the foe. As a last result, it will clamp the foe with its powerful shell. However, this leaves Shellder vulnerable to an attack, hence, it is rarely used. As a total last resort, Shellder may use Selfdestruct or Explosion to knock itself and the enemy out.

Shellder travels by rapidly opening and closing its shell, propelling it in the opposite direction of its shell through the water. Shellder are incapable of travel on land.

Just like an oyster, Shellder can produce pearls with its shell. When a grain of sand enters its shell, it mixes with body fluids to produce the perfectly round pearl.

Despite its thick shell, Shellder will also protect itself at night by sleeping under sand; it burrows into sand with its broad tongue. Shellder sleeps with its large tongue hanging out of its shell. This is likely the reason why it burrows before rest, as its tongue is vulnerable to attack.

#91 Cloyster User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Cloyster is most famous because it had the highest Defense stat before Pokémon Gold and Silver were released, when it was surpassed by Shuckle and Steelix (and later by Regirock in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire).

Cloyster's name is possibly a portmanteau of cloister and oyster. The Japanese name Parshen may be a portmanteau of the English words partial and open.

Poke'dex Entry: Cloyster are bivalve Pokémon, guarded by an extremely strong, multi-layered shell. This shells cannot be opened even by those with superior strength, and they cannot be damaged by a bomb. Nobody has seen their dark innards, which are Cloyster's weak spot as they are very soft and vulnerable. They launch thick, powerful spikes at enemies in battle, as well as to capture prey. These spikes are even stronger than their shell. Cloyster can also crush prey by clamping their thick shell shut onto them. When being attacked, they simply shut their shells to avoid further damage. To travel through water, they swim by swallowing water and jetting it out opposite to the direction they want to move.[1]

Their thick shells are covered in large spikes which protrude from inside the shell originating directly above their innards. Its inner-shell is a natural grey colour. A Cloyster's outer shell is purple, covered in rugged bumps and spikes with two large spikes on top. Its shells can open and close, with a hinge at the back of its body.

#91 GastlyUser Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Gastly's name comes from the word ghastly, meaning horrible to behold, intentionally corrupted by the word gas, which is prominent in Gastly's anatomy. Its Japanese name is either a misspelling of ghost or possibly a combination of the words ghost, gas and ghastly . In the English translation, Gastly was originally going to be called "Spirit".

Poke'dex Entry: Gastly consists of a dark sphere (its "head") surrounded by a light purple gas. A Gastly has two large eyes with tiny pupils and two vampire-like teeth. Its appearance is likely based on the Japanese concept of hitodama.

Gastly is made of a very thin, gas-like substance, which grants it certain powers and weaknesses. Some say it is an other-dimensional lifeform, while others believe it is formed from toxic gas. It can sneak into any place if it so wishes thanks to the invasive properties of gas molecules. It can render itself nearly invisible and approach enemies undetected, and can envelop said enemies regardless of their size and induce sleepiness, slow poisoning through the skin, or even suffocation.

On the other hand, Gastly's negligible weight and gaseous nature make it very easy for it to be blown off or even scattered to nothingness under a strong wind (although it is presumed the molecules can regroup later). A Gastly will not appear in windy weather if it can help it, but when it finds itself threatened by a strong wind, it clusters in groups under the eaves of houses to protect itself.

Gastly is said to frequent decrepit, deserted buildings. It is perhaps worth noting that even though Gastly and the rest of the Ghost-type Pokémon fit some stereotypes attributed to ghosts, it has a measurable weight, can faint in battle, and breed with other Pokémon—all unusual traits for a supposedly dead entity.

#93 Haunter User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Haunter (ゴースト, Gōsuto?, Ghost in original Japanese language versions), based on a poltergeist, is one of 493 fictional species from the Pokémon franchise. The name Haunter literally means 'one that haunts'--exactly what this Pokémon is. In the beta versions of Red/Blue, Haunter was originally going to be called Spectre (as the third edition of the Nintendo Official Magazine Pokémon Special revealed).

Poke'dex Entry: Haunter takes the shape of an angular floating face with disembodied hands. It has a sinister look, complete with fangs and claws. However, when approached by people, it has a habit of reverting to a spherical form that obscures its eyes, mouth, and hands (as seen in Pokémon Snap). In this state, the attack Foresight can reveal it. Haunter is considered in the Pokédex to be a 'gas type' Pokémon, because of the overall structure of his body. Because of its ability to slip through block walls, Haunter is said to be from another dimension. They seem to eat by first paralyzing their opponent with Lick, then draining a bit of their life force, although it's possible they may eat other food as well, such things like Pokéblocks. It is also said to eat people's dreams by going inside them and scaring them to death.

In total darkness, where nothing is visible, it lurks, silently stalking its next victim. Its tongue is made of gas, yet by licking, it can sap its victim's life. It causes shaking that will not stop until the victim's demise. On rare occasions, after a windy night, a Haunter may be seen trapped in the day's shadows.

#94 Gengar User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Gengar has an appearance evocative of a ghost, shadow, demon or a spirit. It is a bipedal, purple entity with red eyes, big pointy ears, and it always wears an unsettling smile, which, along with stubby hands and legs, makes it look like a gremlin at times. Gengar also possesses a short tail and spikes on its back. Despite its somewhat rough outline, each individual Gengar has a consistent shape. The name is likely derived from the German doppelgänger. In the beta versions of Red/Blue, Gengar was originally going to be called Phantom. The name Gengar refers to the species as a whole, as well as individual specimens in the games, anime and manga.

Poke'dex Entry: Gengar often has a rather sinister personality, especially when in the wild. It inhabits remote mountainous locations and urban environments alike, being a dangerous Pokémon to encounter in either case. Fortunately, Gengar is a nocturnal Pokémon, so its attacks are limited to the hours of darkness. It has the shape of a spectre or a shadow demon.

Gengar tends to stalk its prospective prey, which includes human beings, and hide in their shadow. It is said that in this way, it has the opportunity to absorb the "vital force"/life of its victims. Gengar acts like a heat sink while doing this, so that its malevolent presence can be given away by a feeling of cold and a shivering sensation.

Another favorite pastime of Gengar is to mimic the shadows of people. A common prank is to take the shape of one's shadow and run past him, giving him the impression that his shadow has come alive and overtaken him. Gengar especially loves to frighten people that way during the nights of a full moon.

#95 Onix User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Its name is a portmanteau of onyx, a semi-precious gemstone, and oni, which is a type of demon or magical beast. Its Japanese name is a pun on 岩 iwa (crag/rock).

Poke'dex Entry: Onix is a gigantic serpentine Pokémon composed entirely of boulders, but with eyes, a rocky mouth, and a long flat horn on its head. It is a subterranean creature that bores its way through the ground at a rate of 50 mph (80 km/h) in search of food. The tunnels it leaves behind as it burrows through the earth are used as pre-dug homes by other subterranean Pokémon such as Diglett and Geodude.

Within Onix's brain is a structure nigh identical to a magnet, which allows it to determine its heading, its depth underground, and other such information useful for a subterranean Pokémon to know. It acts quite like a compass.

As Onix ages, it burrows deeper underground, and its rocky body becomes progressively harder, rounder, and smoother. Around the age of 100, the pressures exerted on its stone body become so high that it is compressed into a much harder, diamond-like composition, although it is closer to metal in nature. This eventually triggers Onix’s evolution into the even more imposing Steelix.

#96 Drowzee User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Drowzee's name comes from the English word drowsy, which reflects on the fact that Drowzee's primary ability is to put foes to sleep. The "-zee" comes from the sleeping phrase "ZzZzZ". Its French name, Soporfik, is a reference to soporific (in French, "soporifique"), meaning sleep-inducing. Its Japanese name, Sleepe, is a corruption of the English word sleep.

Drowzee can also be identified with the Japanese demon Baku. It is a creature with a tapir's trunk, body and color pattern with a hunger for dreams, traits that characterize Drowzee.

Poke'dex Entry: Drowzee's original biology was based on the tapir. Drowzee's first appearance was in Pokémon episode #27, "Hypno's Naptime" In the episode, the Pokédex stated that Drowzee, had evolved from the fictional "dream-eating Tapir." However, its nature is much unlike the real-world animal it was based on.

Drowzee eats dreams; in order to eat, it must put its prey to sleep. A nightmare or night terror will give it indigestion, and it prefers the dreams of human children to those of adults or other pokémon. Drowzee's appearance and dream-eating behavior are inspired by the Japanese folkloric creature baku.

Drowzee is psychic, but it has limited abilities, compared to other Pokémon; it does not display telekinesis, for example. However, its telepathy allows it to detect people who are asleep, even while asleep itself.

Drowzee's memory when it comes to dreams is eidetic, and it has the ability to show anyone any dream it has eaten. If one thinks he/she had a good dream, but is unable to remember it, it was possibly eaten by a Drowzee.

#97 Hypno User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name "Hypno" originates from the word "hypnosis", as Hypno hypnotizes foes with its pendulum. Hypno is never shown without its favorite pendulum, which it uses to put others to sleep.

Poke'dex Entry: Hypno is a curiously sinister Pokémon that puts other Pokémon and people to sleep. It does so by swinging the pendulum, which it carries in its hand all the time. When hunting for prey, it will polish the mysterious pendulum. Hypno's appearance is described with its yellow complexion, its large pointy ears, its round head, its big fluffy collar hiding its neck, its shifty eyes, and its trunk-like nose. This collar of fur is larger on the female than on the male. Hypno was based on the Baku, a mythical creature from Japan, which was known as the eater of bad dreams.

Eating the dreams of its foes is another sinister ability of Hypno. However, stomach pains will ail Hypno if it eats a nightmare (although it is capable of inducing nightmares via the Nightmare move, which it can learn via the Move Maniac). At dusk, some Hypno will appear near schools and less-traveled roads. This may be to scare children and travelers at night and hypnotize them. In fact, there was once an incident where a Hypno hypnotized and kidnapped a child.

Hypno relaxes its body by meditating; it practices yoga. Hypno never sleeps, as evident by its Insomnia ability. Instead of sleeping, it probably energizes itself with meditation and by eating the dreams of those it puts to sleep. Hypno's menacing and semi-parted eyelids look sleep deprived.

Hypno is one several species of Pokémon that uses an object to aid it in battle (in Hypno's case a pendulum). Other Pokémon that use objects to fight or aid them in battle are Farfetch'd (which uses an onion stick like a sword), Cubone & Marowak (both which use bones like clubs and boomerangs), and fellow Psychic-types Kadabra & Alakazam (both of whom carry silver Spoons, Kadabra uses one spoon, while its evolved form Alakazam uses two). Despite the fact that these Pokémon now have hold items that represent the objects they use and usually benefit that Pokémon when said item is held by that Pokémon it battle (i.e. Farfetch'd's "Stick" item, Cubone/Marowak's "Thick Club" item, and Kadabra/Alakazam's "Twistedspoon" item), Hypno does not (as of yet) have a hold item that represents its pendulum.

#98 Krabby User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: "Krabby" is a variation on crabby, which denotes both its species and its personality.

Poke'dex Entry: Krabby's most notable feature are its large pincers. Krabby is an omnivore and a scavenger; it rarely hunts for itself. It can also act as a filter feeder by digesting the bacteria in sand, but this is rare. It is territorial, and in beaches where there is little food, fights between Krabby are common.

Krabby also uses camouflage; it can form mucus sacs about itself if threatened, making it seem larger or making it harder to spot against sea sand. It is usually very small, but it makes up by its aggressiveness.

#99 Kingler User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Kingler is most likely a portmanteau of king and angler. Its name could also be interpreted as a combination of king and fiddler, both species of crab. It is an example of one of the few Pokémon names that did not change in the transition from Japanese to English (another example being Pikachu).

Poke'dex Entry: Certainly the 'King' of all Crabs, Kingler is based off the King Crab; however, its name also relates to the boney red 'crown' adorning its head. Kingler possesses a red upper body while its underside is lighter in color, and it possesses two powerful claws, one of which is much larger in size, like the fiddler crab. But being most crabs have their right claw enlarged, unlike Kingler, and that most humans are right handed, it could be defined that all, or at least most Kingler, and probably Krabby, are left-handed...or clawed.

The most noticeable facet of Kingler's being is its humongous claw. The claw grew to this size to protect Kingler from possible predators. It has the crushing force of 10,000 psi, but it comes at a price. The claw is very heavy, forcing Kingler to spend much of its time in the water, where the claw doesn't weigh nearly as much.

However, Kingler can transition from water to land with relative ease, and when above water, it communicates with others of its species by waving its claw. It has four legs, which it uses to scuttle around. Its claw is normally kept low to the ground in order for Kingler to keep its stamina up.

A crustacean, Kingler is protected by a strong exoskeleton that protects it from harm. While the skeleton is somewhat heavy, it offers Kingler incredible protection.

#100 Voltorb User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Voltorb is a conjunction of volt, a measure used in electricity studies, and orb, a reference to its spherical shape. Its original Japanese name comes from two sources. "Dama" is derived from "tama", meaning "ball" or "sphere". "Biriri" comes from "biri biri", an onomatopoeic word describing the prickling sensation of an electric shock. Oddly enough, despite being Electric-type Pokémon, neither Voltorb nor its evolved form, Electrode, learn any Electric attacks naturally until Generation III.

Poke'dex Entry: Voltorb looks remarkably like a Poké Ball in shape and coloration. It is a red-and-white small sphere which has eyes on the red part.

The most peculiar thing about the Voltorb species is its origins, which are not fully understood. The first reported appearance of a Voltorb was near a factory which made Poké Balls, shortly after the introduction of modern Poké Balls to the market. Voltorbs were later found in other places, such as power plants and electric train tracks, from where they draw power.

Since its appearance is so similar to that of a standard Poké Ball, it is theorized that Voltorbs are somehow derived from Poké Balls. Some believe that a Voltorb is created when a Poké Ball is exposed to a powerful pulse of energy. Voltorb's similarity to a Poké Ball makes it easily mistaken for the latter, and there are many who have been zapped by a Voltorb thought to be a Poké Ball. Voltorb's components are not found in the wild, which emphasizes its artificial nature.

A Voltorb's attitude seems to be rather volatile - it can and will Self-Destruct with very little notice. Even the slightest stimulus, such as a bump it encounters while rolling along, may cause it to explode. For this reason, everyone dealing with Voltorbs in any way exercises extreme caution in their handling.

It is also interesting to note that the original Pokéballs exploded after usage so they could not be used again, unlike in the anime. This may be a reason why Voltorb's and its evolved form Electrode's signature attacks are Self-Destruct and Explosion (both of which cause the Pokémon using it to lose all its energy). This evolution occurs once a Voltorb reaches level 30.

They are often found near power plants. They are also seen in towns sometimes, rolling along power cables.

#101 Electrode User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Electrode's name, rather simply, comes from the word electrode, which is a device through which electrical current passes. Its Japanese name is derived from maru, meaning round, and the English word mine, referring to its explosive nature. It is also an anagram of "manmarui", an adjective that means "completely round". It explodes if anything annoys or disturbs it, or sometimes just randomly.

Poke'dex Entry: This Pokémon is the evolution of Voltorb which, in theory, is the result of a powerful pulse of electricity striking a Poké Ball. Electrode feed on electricity; they can be seen congregating around power plants and in lightning storms. They are usually seen with very large grins on their faces.

Electrode's most well-known and feared characteristic is its ability to explode at any given time. Electrode is very sensitive to the slightest shock, and will explode against its own will and without warning. They will also explode if they absorb too much electricity. Also if it has nothing to do, it amuses itself by exploding.

The electricity it stores is rarely used to attack foes. It is instead used to increase its rolling speed. The amount of electricity in an Electrode is relative to how powerful its explosions are. The stored energy also generates strong static electricity around Electrode's body, sometimes paralyzing enemies on contact.

Electrode also have disembodied eyebrows, which may float above it almost like floating antennae.

Due to its unusual nature, some theorize that Voltorb and Electrode are a sort of energy force rather than having a physical body.

#102 Exeggcute User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Fact: Exeggcute's name is derived from the words egg and execute. Its Japanese name may be a pun on 玉 tama (ball) and 卵 tamago (egg).

Poke'dex Entry: Exeggcute resembles a cluster of six pink-shelled eggs, each bearing a distinct expression. Most of the eggs are cracked, some to the point of exposing a hard yellow yolk-like interior.

Although an Exeggcute is considered a single Pokémon, each one is actually comprised of six different entities collectively comprising the Exeggcute, though they may be connected through one telepathic brain-wave, incorporating their psychic powers. These entities are egg-shaped, although they are actually more related to plant seeds than eggs. They attract each other in groups of six using telepathic signals only they can receive and form a very strong bond of energy. Thanks to this bond the Exeggcute remain in their balanced formation and can spin around. Even if one is temporarily separated, it will quickly be rejoined with its swarm.

The shell of the creatures forming the Exeggcute is particularly durable. Even if it cracks, the mysterious content will not spill. It is said that if cracks increasingly appear on its surface, it is close to evolution. However, Exeggcute require exposure to Leaf Stones to catalyze their evolution into Exeggutor in the video games.
