Well I dunno. I mean yes Drummers are arrogant. I was a drummer(marched Tenors) and playing the drums made me exponentially more arrogant but i mean can you blame us? Have you tried to march around with 30-40 pounds hanging off you? Especially double timing a 4 to 5 step for about 20 to 30 yards and only having a like 3 or 4 measures while playing a series of mulitple paradiddles and other rudiments. Also you have the pressure of knowing that if you biff this, the whole band will follow. They'll biff it to because come will follow some wont. Then the dm looks bad cause he's not with the band. To top all of that the Front Ensemble is now off time on the melody and since they are one of the first things heard they look bad too. Yah, I think thats a good reason to be pretty arrogant. And anyway during the winter you dont see a bunch of saxes marching on a tarp, you see a drumline. So yah there's the ego portion of it all. But some drummers really have an ego problem. I mean you gotta respect the line but you also need to hold down the ego you know. Because when you let the ego get to you, you lose control. You decide that your the best and so you dont listen in and you crash the show...

omfg the reason were cocky is because we have idiots like u who judge us!

....and we have to put up with the bd blameing us for like all the mistakes

*gives example* bd- um so and so its an a# not an ab so percussion fix that

There is a difference in playing drums then playing them right. So stick that up you v****a and take it to the bank.

Wow, my first post in a while.

Yea, we're kinda cocky because we have 10 to God knows-something pounds hanging off of us, and trying to keep a steady tempo for a 2 page song can get hard. I'm barely going into my freshman year, and I'm starting to feel confident in making Ranch HS's drumline. Then again, if I don't make it, oh well.

Drums are actually pretty difficult because if you make a mistake then everyone notices. Also, you're in the very back and you're standing up, therefore the judges/whoever's watching you can see you clearly. I personally think that Percussion is very difficult and very tricky. It makes me very nervous when I'm in the back, trying not to mess up because people notice you the most.

It's weird how people steriotype drummers as being cocky.
Most of the one I know aren't, and the ones who are cocky are crazy good.

Ok, I'll admit as a soon-to-be third year member of the drumline that most of us are cocky, but three years straight of winning championships will do that to you. Our snare drummers are the worst when it comes to cockiness, but they really are crazy good...the problem is, all but one of them is graduating this year, so we have to form a new line. I'm in the tenor line, and that's no walk in the park. Whoever says playing drums is easy has obviously never tried to march with full tenors during 9-5 band camp weeks. It's seriously hell on earth, eight hours lugging around those stupid things...

We have to be confident. Try marching down Pasadena's parade carrying a snare or bass drum. Its not easy.

No offense to you, but you get breaks throughout the parade. We play the cadence between songs.

Because we have the attention span to multitask.

huh. for my band it's not as if you
need an attention span for cadence.
it's just the same boring thing over, and over again
so in the meantime, you can glance around
at the scenary.

*laughing hysterically and stops* WAIT WHAT THE CRAP DID YOU JUST SAY?!?!?!

ok dude...
not ALL drummers are cocky. some of us have uberly high egos (which REALLY PISSES ME OFF) i think its just because not everyone is able to play our instrument the way we can so we just have an ego about it...(not saying i do...)
but if ur saying drums arent that hard to play...heh...ur wrong buddy. i play both set and percussion. and i plan on being in marching band in high school. we do have to keep tempo, and that's hard sometimes 'cause the whole band follows YOU. some follow the director and some follow YOU. and plus if you mess up everyone knows that YOU did it O_o if you're in a trombone or trumpets..etc...doesnt the director have to ask?
just saying. no offense to other instruments or anything, i'm just making a point.
and besides, i've seen HUGE egos, like for instance, at my old school we had a really cocky sax section, pissed everyone off, even the director. stare

edit: i am still venting here lol. you see, drummers are also cocky because people like YOU ARE ALWAYS UNDERESTIMATING US!
JEEZ! (srry, venting again...) A LOT of sections are cocky, not just percussion. e.g.: saxaphones at my old school = uberly cocky
trombones and one euphonium at my current school = WAY MORE THAN uberly cocky

and dude, you brought the flames upon yourself...feel our burning fire of rage.

why are drummers so cocky??? its not like they have a hard instrument all they have to do is keep tempo i do that playing the a. sax and the baritone...

i've picked up the drums n there not hard... set is but im talking about marching drums...

Say wah? its pretty obvious tht percussion is an easy instrument to play.
than other instruments like flutes, saxons, etc i just really hate playing those " Marching" shiity stuff, i've played drums since oh i dont know year 5 ?
