Ame had since fallen asleep, too tired to think anymore. Yami laid down next to her, whickering softly before falling asleep.
Inira decided to take the roan on a short ride. She swung herself onto his back, not bothering with any tack. "Alright, boy..." she whispered, "Let's see what you can do." She trotted him out of the stable, then set him at a canter in the direction of the forest. "I won't be gone long...no one will miss me..." she whispered to herself.

"Of course," Laurence replied to Azalia, and out of the corner of his eye he saw Merewyn nod. They traversed the forest in silence for a moment as Laurence cast his mind around for a topic of conversation. "Well, I know your name, Lady Merewyn, but I am afraid I've missed that of your friend. Might I have the pleasure of knowing how you are called?"
"Yes?" Ismeine said, finally acknowledging Scarlet's calls. "What is it? We are wasting time." She felt guilty for speaking to her friend in such a manner, but her patience was quite thin at the moment, so she forwent an apology.

"Oh, I'm sorry. My name is Azalia," she replied, pulling at a spider web that she had just accidentally walked into. She felt uneasy at the fact that Sir Lawrence had called Merewyn "lady." Had it been a simple curtesy, or did he really know who she was?

Merewyn caught it too and exchanged glances with Azalia.
"Nice to meet you, Azalia," he was saying. "Of what does your work at the castle consist?"
"I am a kitchen maid," Merewyn said too quickly in her anxiety to convince him. Her heart pounded in her chest as there was a pause; was he doubting her?
"I see," he finally said. "And you, Azalia?"

"I am a kitchen maid as well." Azalia replied calmly. Lord, forgive my lie, she thought. But she couldn't have said that she was Ismeine and Merewyn's servant, and if she had simply said the ladies of the castle, he might have ask their names. Saying she was a kitchen maid was the quickest and easiest, and having the same job would help explain why the girls were out together.

"I see. And do the kitchen maids of Maisone often steal away into the forest during the night?" Laurence said, smiling. He could sense nervousness from the girls and was uncertain as to whether or not they were telling the truth. He was around royalty enough to recognize how they walked, talked, and acted, and he had his suspicions about Merewyn and her sister. If he recalled correctly, the first daughters of the king of Maisone were twins, and it was quite uncommon to find more than one set of twins in any kingdom. Still, he humored them.

"Can you slow down just a little?" Scarlet called to Ismeine, who had finally acknowledged her callings, "Just until I can catch up with you?". Scarlet wasn't used to running so much, but Ismeine and her seemed to have fallen into a steady pace, although Scarlet was still behind. She wasn't sure what Ismeine would do when they returned to the castle and the possibility the king knew was most definitely a scary one. She wondered if Ismeine had thought about that.

Letting out a strange noise of exasperation, Ismeine suddenly stopped running to let Scarlet catch up. She thought little of the castle and of what the king might do; she doubted he cared anyway. If he hadn't noticed her sneaking off after so many years, she did not think there would be any reason for him to start noticing now.
Except for the war..., a small voice said inside of her, but she ignored it.

Scarlet caught up to Ismeine and gave her what was supposed to be a smile, but it was almost just Scarlet trying to catch her breath. "Okay," She said, "You can continue running now if you like." She waited for Ismeine to begin running before she herself did.

Ismeine turned around to start running again, then sighed and sat down abruptly. "I suppose I ought to let your breath catch up with you first," she said sympathetically. She spotted a long-legged spider wandering about the floor and held out her palm for it to crawl over.
"I wonder how the others are faring...," she said absent-mindedly. Regret and guilt filled her heart as she realized what she had done: She'd left her sister and her friend in the hands of a complete stranger. Not only a complete stranger, but a Jahrran knight as well.
Lord, keep them safe..., she prayed.

Scarlet began to run after Ismeine until she stopped and sat down. She walked from where she was to the place where Ismeine sat, "Thank you." Scarlet said kindly to Ismeine. Scarlet didn't sit, however, and when Ismeine spoke both of their thoughts aloud, she could feel Ismeine's guilt. Scarlet had sympathy for Ismeine, who had followed her instincts, and probably anger as well, which at this moment filled her with regret.
Scarlet caught her breath finally and said, "Ok, I think I am good, you want to go on?"

Inira squinted at the sight ahead of her. "Those...are silhouttes?" She whispered. Slowing the gelding down, she trotted closer, trying to hear what they were saying.

"Not usually." Azalia replied to Sir Lawrence. "We would be much too tired to cook during the day if we did." She started thinking about Scarlet and Ismeine. She hoped that nothing had happened to them.

Laurence kept a steady conversation until they happened upon Ismeine and the maiden who was with her. Ismeine leapt to her feet as soon as she saw him, and anger flashed in her eyes once again.
"I knew he would slow us all down," she accused.
Laurence humbly bowed his head, mostly in order to hide the smirk he could not fight off. "I am terribly sorry," he said. "I am afraid I do not know the forest as well as I think I do."

Reining in the gelding, Inira could just make out what the silhouettes were saying. "That's...Lady Ismeine's voice..." she trailed off. Her horse gave a rather loud whinny, and she flinched. Dismounting, she tried to calm him down. "Do you want the whole world to know we're not in the stable?!" she whispered furiously.
