"Yes." Sabin said with an ascent of his head. That he would not deny, nor did he wish to. He was a powerful man on this island, and he did not want anyone to forget that. And while he knew he needed Moreau for this project, after all, it WAS his project ultimately, it still rankled him that he had to answer to him and his idiosynchracies.
He glanced at her arm, as it raised momentarily, an eyebrow arching in curiousity. "Did you enjoy your meal..?"

'I liked it,' she nodded. Where would she put her arm? Down again..? She touched it lightly on his arm, letting it rest there for a moment before taking it away. 'Sabin-san is always kind,' she repeated that sentiment often towards him, but she was unable to express herself clearer without mixing up her words, or getting them wrong altogether.

He glanced down as she made physical contact, but did not pull away or speak of it.
Only when she finished speaking and had placed her arm back into her lap did Sabin respond. "I am glad that it pleased you. And perhaps we shall do this again sometime soon. If you... are sleepy, I can return you to your duplex."

'I would like very much to have this again,' she said, then felt unease at his latter words - had he been unhappy with her, and didnt want her around anymore? 'I am not tired,' she replied, which was the truth. Her schedule back home had been much more demanding then it was here, and at any rate this time of the night was when she was most awake. 'If Danna-san wish me to go, then I will.' her eyes were fixed on her lap now. The plain fact was, she hoped he didnt send her away. If he did, she would know he was displeased with her.

Sabin paused, unsure again as he studied the cryptic expression on Sayuri's face. Her emotions were deeply burried behind that white-painted mask. And yet... she aked to stay longer?
"You ... are enjoying my company, Satoharu-san?" Sabin pressed gently.

She nodded her head. 'I want to stay if Danna will let me,' her eyes flickered up again, alighting on his face for a moment before dropping again. It was hard for her to look him straight in the face because she was meant to be coy. That and the fact that she was alone..with a man. The only other man she had ever been alone with on a regular basis was the dresser for the Okiya; and he didnt count as he saw half naked Geisha every day. 'Please I wish to stay,' and she reached out again to him, this time placing the tips of her fingers on his closest hand.

Sabin's eyes lingered on her hand, the touch warm and sincere. He sat straight, hesitating, tumbling over the situation in his mind.
But for his studies on geisha, and while he had no problem with the formal dinner setting and appreciation of her performance, Sabin felt at a loss of what to do next. As much as he longed for companionship, he had sworn off getting to know islanders on a personal basis. The only exception were the situations that he knew the islander was at least content. He didn't want to rouse his sleeping conscience. Sayuri was new, so new she barely had an understanding of what was in store for her, the language barrier preventing Sabin from explaining it to her thoroughly.
He hungered for companionship, though. The weakness of human emotion was that it desired others... as much as he wished to shut out everything else and be happy again - without opening himself up for the pain that came along with it. And yet, as much as Sayuri seemed to wish to fill that need, he knew that it only promised complications. She couldn't understand his problems, his thoughts...
"What is it that you seek here, Satoharu-san? Someone to protect you, care for you? A lover..? A friend..?"

It was an odd question for a Danna to ask a Geisha, and her fingers stopped their movement on his hand as she tried to work out how to answer him. Should she try for levity, the conversation and mood were getting serious and intense; neither of which she often encountered. Mostly she played rock, paper, scissors drinking games where the loser of each 'set' had to take a penalty drink. She knew how to drink without actually drinking though, which was lucky as she was terrible at even that simple game. 'I want..' Did he really want to know what was in her heart? The list of things she wanted in an ideal world where her Danna was not married, and didnt just see her as a bright jewel that bespoke of his power and wealth. She was afraid of mis-speaking - she wanted a friend, she wanted..well that lover thing was a foreign to her as he was, but she'd heard that was meant to be a good thing as well. She wanted to be loved for all her flaws. She shuffled forward, moving her hand from his and leant her head down, pressing her lips onto his skin. She sat up slowly and looked at Sabin, a direct look into his eyes. 'You.' No one could understand - that was the problem. Those she met could counsel Sayuri on the things that were wrong about Sabin to her, but she had been sent to him. There was duty, she was bound by that, but she had been overwhelmed by the new place, situation and as he had shown to her only kindness, her strongest attachment was to him. Nothing he said would leave this room, Geisha spoke to no one about what happened behind closed doors.

Once again Sabin's eyebrows raised, this time nearly to his hairline. Was this more of her duty? Or was this honesty in the Geisha's voice.
The cynical side of Sabin's mind told him that this is why Geisha were so highly valued - they could say the things that their patrons wanted to hear, comfort them - even when there was a language barrier - and give a very convincing act of compassion and understanding. Emotions were a tricky enough subject, made all more complicated by one who was raised to play to them.
He raised his hand, rubbing the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger.
Did she even know the implications that his mind... that any Western mind might put to such a desire? She was still a child.. younger than his children. And the dossier said she was Maiko... a virgin. In a subsociety of Japan where physical intimacy was about as publically discussed as it was in Victorian England...
"Do you know what it is that a man and a woman do... what a Geisha and her Danna do...." Sabin gesticulated. He was not supposed to be the one that was uncomfortable.

Sayuri realised that she had somehow made him uncomfortable, embarrassed even. She had done that? It was like a jolt of power with the realisation and it was a good feeling. 'My Onesan..big sister,' she said. 'She say things,' and it was her turn to blush, though it would only be noticeable on the skin near her hairline and around her ears. 'She give me book one time for joke,' she giggled a little, remembering turning the pages and seeing the colourful depictions of copulating men and women. 'Danna-san must not worry,' she said, thinking he might have gotten the idea that she was more like a tayu then a Geisha. 'Sayuri is clean. Sayuri is only for Danna.' It was a rather old-fashioned notion of their relationship. Some Geisha certainly did forge a sexual relationship with their Danna's, some didnt. Geisha and Maiko nowadays were allowed to date if they managed to fit it into their busy schedules, but most didnt simply because they were so busy. They didnt necessarily have to be virginal anymore. But marriage - everyone agreed that was the end for a Geisha. One could not be married and still be a Geisha.

Sabin nodded slowly. Perhaps she was not quite as innocent as he had assumed... but still. Despite Sabin delighting in games of manipulation, despite the dark place he had retreated, for him, sex was a very intimate act. Strangely, almost an opposite pleasure than the controlling, manipulative pleasures that he enjoyed on the Island. To Sabin, pleasures of the body were a mark of humanity, in finding comfort and support in another person as opposed to being self-sufficient and cut-off from a conscience or identifying with another.
And thus, Sabin felt... caught off guard by the notion of being intimate with a woman whose language and inexperience, not to mention her status as a subject, prevented him from being truly intimate with her.
At the very least, that was a step that he was not ready for. "I see." Sabin finally spoke up, wrenching himself from his thoughts. But what else was one to say
He turned his head quickly at the sound of a small crash from the direction of a closed door with a wince. "Merde..." He rose to his feet, looking to Sayuri with an apologetic look. "I am sorry.... it is probably my cat..."

The conversation seemed to be over for now, and Sayuri wasnt sure whether that was a good or bad thing. She worried that he had taken the wrong meaning from her words. What if he had expected her to be completely innocent in everything to do with..that stuff? She almost let out a huff of frustration, but caught herself in time. Sayuri was startled from her thoughts by the crash from behind the closed part of his room. 'You have neko?' she asked, a smile on her face. She liked cats, but was never allowed to have one. Or any pet. 'I see it?' she asked, tugging on his arm a little as she stood.

Sabin's smile relaxed a bit, a bemused, mischivious smile playing over his face.
"Yes... I do... although it is probably not like you are expecting." Sabin responded, getting to his feet and walking over towards the door to his bedroom.
Opening the door, he peered into the room. "Beastie! What are you doing in there?"
A curious "mrowr?" answered his call and a black shape, eager to be free of the room, which had long since become uninteresting in his confinement (and he made sure to express his displeasure at his roaming area to be limited by leaving a surprise on Sabin's bed). Darting out of the room, a small black shadow whisked straight past Sabin and Sayuri and leapt onto the table, eager to pick at the fish that had been left out and within easy reach of the.... strange feline.
Crouching down on its six legs and nibbling, its two long tentacles that sprouted from its shoulders writhed eagerly.
"Hey! You!" Sabin snapped at the cat.

Sayuri peered around Sabin, eager to see the ball of fur that he was calling to. When it dashed onto the table it did so swiftly that she couldnt get a proper look at it until was stationary and stealing food. She chewed on a nail and padded slowly nearer the table, squinting at it and then looking at Sabin, before looking back at the cat. 'Ichi, ni, san, yon, go, roku,' she counted. 'It has..6 legs,' she squeaked. She knelt by the table, sliding near it and looking at the cat - which looked quite peculiar, a fully regaled Maiko scooting around on her hands and knees. 'It has..' she wiggled a hand, not knowing the english word for the tentacles on his back. 'Danna-san, why does neko have them?'

Sabin smiled... was it proudly?
"Yes, yes he does. Six legs and tentacles." He summarized.
"But he is sweet. Despite being rather ill behaved sometimes." He said in a scolding fashion to the cat, scooping it off the table and away from its stolen meal.
The cat looked thoroughly unapologetic, looking back towards the food disappointedly.
"He is... a finished experiment. He did not always have.... the extra appendages."
