Well, my band director tells us not to tap our feet but that's because if you get an entire band tapping their feet, if one person gets off the whole band can hear it and it messes other people up. If not everyone internalizes the pulse then the whole tempo is never steady. It's better to just watch the conductor but I understand your dilemma. Tapping my foot usually helps me but then, I'll look at other people's feet and half the time we're not the same. Maybe I'm just bad.....but I think you should try not tapping when you're in class but it's perfectly acceptable when you are alone. I don't understand why he wouldn't let you tap your foot all by yourself... question

foot tapping is generally an accepted time-keeping technique. marching ensembles tend to use their feet for time keeping. if you want to know wether or not I do, however, No, i don't tap my foot. being a percussionist, i've enough to concentrate on without trying to keep my foot in tempo. I generally use my teeth during difficult phrases in regards to tempo and otherwise just keep the tempo in my head.

I tap my foot... and just get on my director's nerves to prove how good I am and to make the other clarinets worse, I tap my foot very loud in a fast tempo so the other clarinets get confused and he gets pissed off. We hate each other 3nodding

My middle school band director actualy required us to tap our foot. If we didn't tap our foot on band tests he took off 15 points! Personally, I think tapping your foot is good when you're just begining to show your understanding of music and to help you learn to keep a solid, consistent beat, but as you become a better player you don't need to anymore. Now that I'm in high school and it's marching season we don't even sit down to play and marking time has replaced foot tapping, but when I play at my lessons I tap my toe at the begining of the song to start myself off, but stop when I begin. I find it destracting if I continue.

My band teacher encourage us all to tap out foot. He actually takes off points in a test if we don't I don't see anything wrong with it. I find it helpful.

I do it all the time, the only time the director doesn't want us to tap our foot is during a concert/competition.

River Angel Odin Okay, this has been bothering me for three years...since 6th grade when I joined the middle school band. I'm not saying I downright hate my band director or anything, but I can't possibly keep tempo without having to tap my foot. And he's told me so many times to stop (but I still havn't) and he says that tapping your foot is for babies, which was quite insulting to me, actually. My dad's a big music teacher (He was Rhode Island Teacher of the Year) and he taps his foot, which basically means that Mr. Fortier was calling him a baby. The funny thing is, he looks up to my dad yet he's calling him a baby. sweatdrop Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? nope my band director doesent mind (even though i tap with my heel)and im a freshman

I tap my heel because I just can't tap my foot. I do it lightly so that my foot barely touches the ground and you can't hear it. Our BD doesn't care anyways, even if you're in the front row (like me). But no one notices it anyway. It's easier to keep time.

I tapped my foot for 4 years, then when I joined marching band last year, I magically stopped. Even in concert band. I have no idea why xD
I still don't.
anywho.. My band director could care less if you tapped your foot or not. He hasn't said anything to us about it, and most people around me tap their foot.

River Angel Odin Anyway, do you think tapping your foot is at all bad? I don't think it's totally bad...and i don't think it's babyish...but it can cause a problem if you're in an unusual time signature or if you're not on the beat...it can really knock you off....found this out through experience....btw, i used to get yelled at for the same thing....but i got yelled at by the BD and the section leader... sweatdrop

I did it from time to time when I was in band, my BD never told us anything about it. Actually it is kinda hard to believe that some band directors are against it sweatdrop .
