Do you mean Queen Mary I of England? Daughter of King Henry VIII? She was known as Bloody Mary because she burn over 300 protestants during her rule.

Yes, I've tried it.
Yes, it worked.
I saw the face of a woman in the mirror.
Not a scary woman, though.
Just a woman.

And I feel terribly sorry for the queen, Mary Tudor, this legend may be based off of.

The reason, in my mind, she persecuted those of the Protestant religion is because those who betrayed her and mistreated her were of that very same religion. When her father, King Henry VIII, divorced her mother (who was a devout Catholic) and abolished the Catholic Church in place his new wife's, Anne Boleyn, religion -- Protestantism. Mary was, essentially, banished from her home. Though her new estate was comfortably lavish, she was lonely. Her father, who had devoted so much love to her, was suddenly no longer on speaking terms with her. Instead, he was focusing all his attention on Elizabeth, Anne Boleyn's daughter and Mary's step-sister. Mary may have partially blamed Protestantism for the abuse.

Eventually, in a surprising turn of events, Mary took the throne and reigned under the illusion that her people loved her and Catholicism. Instead, they loved Elizabeth and her promise of Protestantism. Mary mistakenly believed her people wanted her to crush those who openly practiced Protestantism (and, in consequence, Mary may have thought they were conspiring against her for Elizabeth.) But it had the opposite effect. Her people were disgusted by her antics. Mary finally realized this, and reluctantly gave up the throne to Elizabeth before a revolt could arise.

That being said, Bloody Mary was probably a rumor spun up by her people before or after she was overthrown and Queen Elizabeth had taken her place. Whether or not it is true, or if it even is the real origin of Bloody Mary, I do not know. What I do know is that I pity Mary Tudor for her bleak childhood, and her eventual dementia.

Perhaps those who are attacked or spooked by Bloody Mary are Protestants? Or have some Protestant blood in their family. I know most of my ancestors were Catholic...so.

All our English Kings and Queens were like that. They back stab each other and lock up or chop off heads of everyone that disagrees with them.

And don't feel too sorry for Mary the first thing she pretty much did when she became was to imprison Elizabeth in ear she would take over.

Henry died Edward was crowned king and then he died Lady Jane Grey took the crown as Queen for nine days. Mary had her imprisoned and stole the crown off of her. Then Elizabeth took over and imprisoned Mary.

very interesting discussion, I am extremely impressed by this guild. I just thought I'd share that.

The versions of Bloody Mary that I know have sadly already been exhausted here it seems. Queen Mary, the witch Mary and even the Supernatural episode that I just saw for the first time recently (though the episode does state that the urban legend is all over and the murder of the woman in the episode was more of an odd coincidence in that one town).

I have always been freaked out by uncovered mirrors in the dark. I was told about Bloody Mary for the first time in 1st grade from some older kids that tortured my overreactive imagination relentlessly. One started with talking about Candy Man and another turned and told her to tell a better story like Bloody Mary (which her mind was better because it was older). I made bathroom trips as quick as possible and washed my hands in the kitchen for two weeks ><. I have gotten over it for the most part, but I still don't like mirrors at night. Whether its the overused things appearing behind you in mirrors in the movies or the old myth that mirrors are often gateways between spiritiual planes that spirits or other nasty things can travel with. I've never tried it and probably never will. Better safe than sorry and its just wise to not mess with something you can't really pinpoint the origin or the for sure story of (and you can't punch it in the face...)

Annoyingly, my old link seems to have expired, so here is the story of Bloody Mary as told by some homeless kids in Miami. There are connections to La Llorona in the article, too, which is quite nice.

I heard that Mary was a girl that her dad was a doctor. Anyways she got sick, very sick. They thought that she had died but she really hadn't. Well they buried her and she woke up and started scratching the top of the coffin door. Well she scratched and scratched and scratched, but eventually she died. Her fingers were bloody. It might also be that her parents had buried her to make her better. Well they tied a bell to her hand so when she got better there was a bell that would ring. Well her fingers got bloody and all like I said above but when they opened the coffin up she was dead and her fingers were bloody. Either one is one of those 'this is what the story is based off' real stories.

I tried it once with a friend. I saw her reflection in the mirror and freaked out. I found out later that it was only Tasha.

The story I heard was that she would appear in the mirror is you spun around three times while chanting her name in a dark room, she would appear and scratch your face up/off.

The whole sick person being buried alive is true, it used to happen a lot. And the thing about having a bell tied to the hand is also true. Rich people would buy coffins with bells so that if someone was buried a live they would ring the bell and alert everyone to the fact they were still alive.

I remember when I was little I wanted to do it. But my mom told me not because it had something to do with invoking the devil, or something.

Well, the version I have heard ((and re- told)) goes like this.

wahmbulance WARNING: I found this story creepy while TYPING it out, please don;t read it if you get scared easily or if you just don't want to read my extra long post..((This story is quite scary)) wahmbulance

Once upon a time, there lived a girl called Mary. She lived with her family in a large old house by the lakeside.

One night, while Mary was preparing for bed and brushing her hair in front of her large vanity mirror, someone came up behind her and chopped her head off with an axe.

As you would imagine, Mary's clothes got quite soaked with blood. The murderer, hearing someone coming down the halway, hid Mary's body in the cupboard and placed her head on top of the vanity's mirror, where the blood slowly seeped down the glass.

Mary's parents found her body the next morning. But the blood that has dripped down the mirror refused to be taken off. Mary had been accused in the past of bieng a witch and of dabbling in the occult.

Mary's soul was trapped in the mirror for all eternity. But if you go into a room with a mirror, turn off all the lights and light a red candle and chant Mary's name three times, she will come for you...

If you are a good person, she will spare your life. But if she can see evil in your heart...She will kill you.

Yes, I have tried bloody mary before. It didn't work for me, but when you think about it- wouldn't the ghost of Bloody Mary just be a head??

I've tried it. I've only saw a face in the mirror for a split second, then it vanished. burning_eyes

I've never tried it. Mirror ghosts and whatnot scared me too much as a kid. I still feel anxious around mirror, mainly in the dark. However, once, I dreamt that I did it. I was standing in front of my mirror in the bathroom at either my previous house or the one before that, and all I saw was a weeping woman drenched in blood who reminded me of Carrie.

Weirdly, I wasn't totally freaking out about it when I woke up. I was just like, whoa.... O_o.
