One and one alone.
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (well, and anything else by him, as well). Hardcore Fantasy touching on the possibilities of other worlds, and one mans quest to save them all. First book, The Gunslinger, its a little slow at first, but once you get to the second book, The Drawing of the Three the read-through of the first will be well worth it. <33

I really enjoyed the Shannara series by Terry Brooks. There is so much that can be enjoyed and discussed from these books. It provides food for though (if you look for it) as well as pure enjoyment.

Auel very good "Eragon", Paolini "the Wheel of time series", by Robert Jordan (i really like this one i've read it like 7 times "Legacies," by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. this is a very involving series that i quit enjoy i am also starting to get into "the game of thrones" Wow I am a huge Clan of the Cave Bear fan. The series is one of my all time favs, although the last one was a tincy bit of a diappointment.

Anything by Ursula Le Guin, some of the Star Trek books are pretty good (I am partial to the Spock centered ones myself), anything by Terry Pratchett, the Harry Potter books, and, even though he is not super sci-fi like, I really like Chuck Palahniuk's book (fyi, they can be a bit sketch)

May I suggest:
The Truth-Teller's Tale - Sharon Shinn
The Last Apprentice - Joseph Delaney Comment: This is an excellent series if your sudden urge to read something requires a spooky, evil-beast, dark, and gothic kind of thing, than this is the series for you.
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Brontë Comment: This novel is my current R.I.P. (read in progress). It is known for its 'gothic elements' and is, in fact, quite dark. I suggest it highly, though; for anyone looking for a slightly challenging read. Do not be discouraged if you must look up a few words. I have and increase my vocabulary daily. 'Inclement' - adj. stormy (as in weather). Like I said, I greatly increase vocabulary and I love the story of this book.
I will have more later, but am currently too lazy to look up authors' names.

Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut. That book is so mentally disturbing (because the reader takes the role of the author) and its a true story. While it doesn't go into anything "realistic", Vonnegut sets what his mind was set during the bombings in Dresden. He embellishes his writing with outrageously odd and fictional details both creepy and hilarious.
