[ Barbos noted it, the tinge of irritation shown by the boy after being called as such. That faint moment of fire that welled up in him. The simple change in his hands as they gripped the table. These things forces the President to look on carefully. After all, in this business, you never know what you’re dealing with. And right now, he can’t very well trust this lad. He had been able to swoon over Sona--which is gifted in her own right, but she too is just a child. Too easily trusting. He could be an enemy, or a spy, waiting for a chance to worm his way into their ranks, and as such, caution is perpetually necessary. Even more so when his only daughter is closer to it than he’d like. The shadows casted from the rim of his hat serve only to show off the glare of his crimson iris as he listens on respectfully. “Yes, we’ve had quite a trying affair in our attempts to find you a partner, haven’t we? That’s all the more reason why you can understand my hesitation on this matter.” he responds to his daughter, his poker faced expression non-changing. And all the while, his eyes never leave Ikki.
After hearing the boy’s response to his naming sense, Barbos lets off a smirk and bows his head lightly. He knew his words could have gone as insulting, but he needed to gauge his self control. His mentality. The way he responds to negativity directed his way. That sense of being looked down upon. And for all intents and purposes, he passed. With flying colors at that. “Oh my! You’ll have my utmost apologies, Ikki-kun! I didn’t mean to offend, but as you may know, the things we deal with are quite...taxing. Both physically and mentally. Our agents and employees are tasked with things normal people just wouldn’t be able to soundly handle without their spirits breaking--or their bodies. So it’s with the highest respect that I must have you understand. I’d rather the future generation not be uprooted before they’ve had a chance to experience the world.” He says this plainly, with the usual spark of life he brings with his tone. But one can easily feel the weight behind what he’s saying.
In the end, this is not a children’s playground. This is not for fun, or a hobby--unless you’re a monster at a level matching Hunter. This is real life. A real job where people die and/or lose the will for the future consistently. This is a business dealing in both the general affairs of life, and the dark cruel sides of it. Regardless, Ikku continues on, and speaks the words Barbos simply did not expect from one his age. The maturity and sincerity behind them speaks volumes to how he was raised, and his mentality. Tana, who is generally aloof and in her own world, has even taken to floating behind Ikki and wrapping her arms around him like a close friend or lover even. Within her mind, she speaks to Barbos directly, while staring him in the eyes. “Take him. This one, while still young, has terrifying potential. Just like Sona, and that Death-man. He’s another one.” Barbos listens intently, before exhaling gently through his nostrils.
He sits back in his chair for a few moments before standing himself up and walking towards the large window winding around half the room. Though everyone behind him likely wouldn’t see, he’s smiling. “I see. Not only are you skilled enough to fix Sona, but you’ve martial prowess as well. Added on to the fact that you seem to be quite mentally sound, and my dear daughter has taken an interest to having a new partner after all of this time… There’s nothing left for me to say but, You Pass!” Right as he finishes, Barbos spins around and lets loose a pop-out streamer as if he had been saving it for such an occasion. He spins, sliding a party hat onto his, Sona, and Ikki’s heads before spinning them around in their chairs. After having them face him, he kneels and places a hand on both of their shoulders firmly, yet gently, like any loving father.
“Take care of each other, please. This world is a terrifying place, and there is no better elixir than having someone by your side. So please, and I ask this not as President or Boss, but as a man and father. Cherish your partnership, and protect one another.” after finishing, he’d give them a warm smile, clearly satisfied with today’s turn of events. Tana watches while floating upside down. And though her face is the same as usual, Barbos can feel the sheer intensity of her satisfaction as well, as she eyes Ikki from above. ]
