Sol - 8

Two legged insect person...but girl wasn't talking about an alkidike, so what could it be? "A portal?" He questioned under his breath. Sol gripped the hand he held, shaking his head to Koril without really turning towards him. Staying put was the best be could do, the best any of them could do, really, given the situation. The less the creature could drag into that portal with it, the best.

While he understood the howling hybrid's frustration, the noise grated on his ears. His antennae twitched; a more outward sign of his general annoyance with everything that had happened that day. "How long was it lying in wait before we all gathered her today, like capramel to a slaughter?"

Koril- Post 9

There was nothing they could do? Was that really true? Koril felt his legs going weak, but managed to stay upright. "She's... gone," he murmured, eyes beginning to water. "The air opened up... She's just.. gone." It didn't seem real. It was all over so fast...

Sol's sharp question made Koril look up at him in shock. Had that thing really been waiting for them to gather? It could have chosen any of them! Biting his lip, he did drop down now to hug Flana against him with one arm, soothed as the zanteer licked his cheek. He kept a firm hold on Sol's hand though. His family had always been a physical source of comfort; always willing to hold his hand, and that was a habit that would be difficult to let go of.

Arronthain Post 8

He felt his sister try to calm him, this was her specialty. "I am sorry for my outburst, I just feel so helpless," he hung his head. "We couldn't help."

He too looked at Sol in shock, in waiting? Could they have been. "If you are right and there is great reason to think you are, this is terrifying." How could they combat an enemy who could read them so easily. Was it preplanned or was it real time location? "Why did they choose to appear in front of a crowd where it would have been better to keep finding people alone.

Prala || Post 6

The whispers nearly drove her mad, many people seemed simply relieved that the creature had gone, never mind that a woman had been taken with it. She shivered at the thought of being torn away from everything familiar so suddenly. She wondered if there was something connecting the people who had been taken so far or if it was pure miserable bad luck. Prala knew what it was like to be imprisoned, her wrists were scarred from months of ropes chafing at her skin while she wasted away in that Oban war camp years ago, she still dreamt of warm blood rolling down her skin. She would never allow that to happen again. She would never be powerless again. She'd come to terms with the fact that not all Oban's were like the monsters that had killed her mother, but she was still a long way from seeking out their company.

She pushed her way through the crowd towards the scene of the disappearance as she listened to Freya's announcement, not shy about digging in with her sharp elbows and simply pushing to clear herself a path. Pretty words spoken by a leader, she knew they had to be said, but declaring that the missing would be found was a lot easier than actually seeking them out. Especially if the creatures could hypnotize their victims and disappear like that. Prala had been around people too much today, her ability to pretend cordiality and tolerance for foolishness was at a critical low. She practically wanted to rip out the throats of people who dared to step into her path and create an obstacle, as it was she snarled deep in her throat at any who dared to glare at her or protest her ministrations. It wasn't like they were doing anything useful, milling around like that. She saw a few people who had leapt for the woman before she was taken, a precious few who managed to look concerned for the victim rather than worried about their own hides.

Bug mages. Dretch.

She'd never heard of such a thing, but the words seemed to fit the insectile movements and sounds she's caught a glimpse of. A shudder of disgust ripped through her at the thought of a human sized insect, at the thought of those clicking limbs closing around her flesh, the hairs on the back of her neck were on end, the things could appear behind you in an instant. It felt like all her senses were on fire just waiting for another Dretch to pop up, she would not be taken by surprise, she would rip its head off with her teeth if she had to. As for the odd paralysis inflicted on their victim... Prala would think of some defense. She wasn't sure if she hoped that the woman was still alive, who knew what the Bug mages wanted with her. Wishing her a quick death might be a kindness.

She stopped near the front where a small group of earthlings seemed to be searching the area. She walked up to near the scene of the crime, moving carefully to avoid disturbing any clues. She crouched, tugged her arrow out of the ground, and tucked it back into the quiver slung over her back.

"I didn't see it arrive, but I watched it disappear with my own eyes, one moment it was here, then next moment they were gone through that portal... thing. Did anyone see another portal open up when it arrived?"

I think she's by your characters?

Makani - Post 7

Giving a bit of a smile Makani said, "That's quite alright. I didn't exactly expect a stranger to help me out just because I'm cute and in need of aid." He was tempted to mention his blindness, just to see if he could get a reaction out of the janarim owner but decided that he'd behave. There were much more important things going on at the moment he really shouldn't be tormenting the local tourists.

Leaning against Rae the sage tilted his head to one side, listening in the voices around him, wanting to absorb it all. There was so much to take in, so much to make mental notes of, and so much that he had to report back to his sister once he found some people that were heading in that direction. Until then he supposed that he could always go to his father who lived in Zena, perhaps spend some time with him? That was one option at least.

Draven
Post 7

Draven was tossed a little off when Makani called himself cute and in need. In need of a reality check for the most part. Shaking his head, Draven pulled Regale back from where he was.

"What do you think of these creatures they are calling 'bug mages'? You are a magic user as well, bet it's nothing you have come across before. Huh?" He asked, not realizing that Makani couldn't see.

AKIYAL
Post: 13

Akiyal's gaze darted down to where Callum's fingers had caught at his hand once more. Everything that had transpired in the last handful of minutes had happened so abruptly. The bug mages, the girl they'd taken, and the rapid-fire sense of threat, terror, and discord that had washed up over Aki's carefully-made detachedness. As it turned out, he didn't really know how to deal with it. What should he do? What were his options?

He should leave, shouldn't he? If this was not a reason to go home, he didn't know what was. But if Aki was being perfectly honest, he didn't actually know how to get anywhere specific. He was essentially a wanderer. Directions and instructions weren't his forte. Even if he knew the name of his hometown, he didn't have the intelligence to find it on his own.

And Callum, for all his intensity moments prior, still didn't seem like a bad guy. If he lived close, maybe he wouldn't terribly mind one little freeloader just until things calmed down.

Aki shrugged. "Dunno what you're apologizing for," he grunted stiffly as his fingers curled back around the other man's in response. "Didn't do nothin' wrong, didn't say nothin' mean. "I would've, I think- tried to stop you, I mean." From the corner of his eye, his gaze skirted down the length of Callum's body before returning to his face. "You don't even look that hard to pin. Prolly could've kept you where you was."

Makani - Post 8

Makani tilted his head to one side, waiting for a moment, then gave a little sigh. Not even a chuckle? It seemed that this one was a tough one to crack, a bit like that mage he met back in the day that just didn't get his sense of humor. Given the situation at hand though he supposed that maybe it wasn't time for his usual way of dealing with things? Giving a little smile he decided that he'd behave for now and try to remain serious.

As he was asked about the 'bug mages' he said, "No, nothing I've ever seen before... or even heard of before." He added the last bit because he was determined to try to remain serious for now. Replacing his runes back in the pouch that hung at his side he said, "Their magic is like nothing I am familiar with, which makes it a bit intimidating. I'll have to put in a bit of extra study here soon to see if I can figure something out. Even just being able to feel their magic when they appear would be nice."

Of course he supposed that feeling their magic meant meeting one of them and that wasn't something that Makani was interested in. He'd just have to figure out a different way to go about it.

AKIYAL
Post: 14

Was there really much reason to stay here now? Aki cast his crystalline gaze around at the crowd. Besides the one Alkidike hybrid (gross) who'd emerged from the crowd, no one else seemed forthcoming with any information, and if Akiyal took a moment to think about it, he supposed he'd be surprised if there was any more information to give.

As far as he could tell from his cursory glance around and the reactions of those during the incident, few had seen or heard of anything like the so-called 'dretch.' The creature had come as a surprise. It's magic was a surprise, and it certainly wasn't anything he'd heard of. Likely nothing could be done about it now.

Were they going to stay and discuss possible solutions? Did anyone know what would become of their victims or where they'd been taken or how to retrieve them? It didn't look like that was the case. Everyone looked frightened, alarmed, confused, scared... Certainly no one here seemed to have any ideas. And it appeared as though being in a large crowd as they were just gave the dretch their pick of targets... All the earthlings crowded together at once, and none of them able to do a thing.

Akiyal inhaled slowly and glanced to the sky.

This was not what he'd intended.

But it was what was happening. He could be reckless, mean, and independent, and there was generally no one around to save him from himself. But for now at least, it might be more beneficial to approach matters with a little more thought and a little more caution. Until the world's current issues resolved themselves, he couldn't really afford to be as rash as was his norm.

Location: With Arronthain and Sol and Koril and Prala
--------------------

"Magic." Volkarosh said by way of explanation. Not that there was much of one.

The idea of being led here hadn't occurred to her, but she supposed it should have. "Not slaughter. It only took one." she said, "It wanted to sow fear." she spoke slowly, carefully. "It wanted to show us... that it could?" Which meant... what?

Her brother was still upset. That was understandable. "No. We couldn't." she said bluntly.

"There may have been a portal, but either way, it knew we would be here. All of us. Witnesses. This was intentional."

And in that... Volka could see some hope.

Chapter 9: Grave Expectations

|| IC ||

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Freya and Vescillea nodded their heads as the hybrid woman ended her contribution. So this threat was heard of before, and the Alkidike seem to know more. Vescillea signaled with her hands to her group of archers, and they dispersed from the crowd. "We will be patrolling the areas, sending out partied to Sauti and Zena. We will gather what we can, and I will send word to the other areas, see if they know anything about these Bug Mages." Even just the words felt foul on her lips. "If anyone is willing to help, we are looking for those to join us in our patrols." she added before letting Freya end the meeting.

"We know now what they are called and we will not stop until they cannot take anyone else and those that have been stolen are returned." She spoke more of the coming days, what to expect, and to travel together. "We understand it may seem futile, but even traveling together will help. We will convene a meeting with the others, and together with the rest of Tendaji we can put this evil to rest." She dispatched the group and while Vescillea left to start on her new duties to the areas, Freya waited with the others lingering behind, asking for more information, though she didn't have near enough for her liking.
