"You kind of already touched both. Which is sorta my next question. Like... that doesn't carry over? My s**t like... resets to being a problem even after you already got me all over you and, sorta vice versa? Because I put my scarf back on after you tried it on."

"Yeah. It does. Everything has a timer. I don't remember much from when I was drunk, and what I do remember, it wasn't good. You've taken a shower and washed your scarf since, right?" He said, staring at him a bit more intently.

"Yeah but like. I still got your whatever you wanna call it on me. If I was gunna catch something I would have, right?" He was trying to rationalize something that was made of pure irrational.

"That's like saying standing out in the middle of a snowstorm didn't get you sick the first time so you must be fine every single time." He said, though he caught himself in his own justification. "I know it doesn't make sense. That it had no firm standing on logic. That doesn't change anything though. It's still something that stops me. It's not a switch I can turn off just because someone points out how insane it is. I've thought about it for most of my life. I already know. I've had plenty of people closer than you tell me that and some that barely knew me. I know."
And yet here he was with the same problem since he was a kid.
He picked at the flipper in his arms.

Melvin dove right into admitting a bunch of stuff and Al reached out about to pat him on the back. Instead, patting him on the... air... behind his back.
"It wouldn't help to tell yourself I'm already sick with the same thing? Cause, yeah, I am. This is like the island of lepers."

Melvin paused and slowly turned to look at him. "Which thing?"
And his eyes were sharp and intense as he watched him.

"The seeing dead, infected, weird s**t thing. We all have it, some of us were born with it, for others it was Maybelline."

He stared at Al after his ridiculous joke and sighed. "You don't get it. It doesn't matter why or how or what. It just is. It's a new monster of my creation."

Al sighed loudly. Held up a finger to signal to Melvin to wait a moment. He then ran over to grab his shirt, very quickly pull it on and then run back and try to offer a hug again.

He stared back at him and frowned. "You know, loudly sighing like that makes it seem like this is a chore. It's not exactly super fun for me either."
But the hug was still there even if Al was squatting awkwardly just to be this low. This - was at least better.
Setting the gear down, he felt the moment was kind of lost from the original sympathy Al was trying to convey back in the water, but at this point there had to be a hug based on the fact he had to explain it to get to this point.
Reaching over, he hugged Al. "You're an idiot."

"So I'm told," Al admitted while patting Melvin's back. Sorry Melvin, it was a genuine heartfelt hug still. Because Al wanted to help but couldn't.
