With preschool now over summer was finally here and with it came good weather and an overly energetic little four year old eager to go outside and play.
Most of the morning had been spent coloring in her Disney princess coloring book while eating Honey Nut Cheerios and bananas while her brother Jasper straightened up the kitchen. Once done, the two of them got ready and even double checked Amelia’s shoes were both on the right feet before heading out the door.
The park he took her to wasn’t all that far; though he did need to carry her down a few flights of stairs that connected residential streets. There were many kids out and about, screaming and laughing, having a grand ole time.
As per usual, Jasper had left her in the care of one of the other parents, whose child she went to school with, while he ran a few laps before it got overcrowded. Just as most conversations went he impressed upon her the importance of staying in the playground area and if she needed to go to the restroom to talk to Mrs. Jameson first.
She had been doing good for quite a while, happily playing with other kids in the sand box or on the spiral slide while her brother was doing his stretches over by the bleachers when a fluffy cream colored critter made a purring sound in the bushes next to the sand box. Curious, Amelia followed the “puuu” sounds expecting to spot a little kitten only to find herself face to face with a little ball of fluff with owlish eyes staring up at her. Her eyebrows rose in surprise before a wide grin pulled the corners of her lips into an excited smile.
“Mao” Amelia responded, mimicking the sound it had made all the while reaching out to try and pet it.
“Kitty kitty!” the little purple haired girl repeated, just as Jasper had done when their neighbor's cat had leapt the fence into their yard.
“Kitty?” Whether it was because the creature was timid or scared, Amelia was left feeling mildly disappointed when it bounced backwards away from her. She would have let it be, and gone back to playing with the other kids, had it not of made another “puuu” sound from where it had emerged from its hiding place. Taking it as a hint that she should follow, the little light purple haired girl in a light blue sundress crawled on her hands and knees till she too found herself on the other side of the bush.
What she saw came as a bit of a surprise as, not one, but several of the fluffy puffskis bounced on by; one following another save for the one still staring up at her expectantly. It “puu”ed once more then bounced towards the small group of its kind and in that moment the promise she had made to her brother had all been forgotten as she followed without hesitation “mewing” along with them.
Back at the park, too preoccupied with getting snacks out of her bag, Mrs Jameson failed to notice that one of the three left in her charge had wandered away; especially considering the little girl
had been happily scooping sand into a bucket as she dug a big hole. By the time the older woman handed her son a string cheese and stuck the straw in the Apple Tree juice box, Amelia had all but disappeared.
