It was a little hard giving chase with all the terrible rocks he had to run up, and with the canopy preventing him from truly taking to the skies. Still, he found the soul. "Come with me," he told it, feeling authoritative.

The slope made a quiet squelch under his feet as Hachi returned to it. He was near a river this time, on a new mountain: it was wet, not snowy.

Yet it faded before his eyes.
Time to search again, Hachi thought. At least this peak was clearer than the last, when it came to foliage. He could float upwards, but not much - he'd lose sight in the brown earth of the brown people he searched for.
Well, it was their souls he wanted, not their bodies, but it was all the same. Souls didn't fly far from the body without a reason.

Why not enjoy the wind while he could, though? Hachi let it buffet him upwards, dipping lowly toward the foliage whenever he spotted a particularly thick patch of it. But it was nearly all low-hanging.

He skimmed his toes through the river as he kept looking. It was at least a faster search this time, but he wouldn't give up knowing what he sought was within reach.
It fluttered toward him and away again lazily, and then winked out of perceivable existence. A tease, then.

He'd forgotten how hard it could be to find souls, Hachi thought. He supposed this was a place where they were entitled to be sparse: the conditions were harsh, after all. But Hachi was known for his tenacity.

He let out a loud, rippling call, like some dogs might for the moon. Of course it was visible now (he was atop a mountain) but it didn't call to him anymore. Had it ever, really?
Hachi was a little surprised to find that it never truly had.

He thought he'd seen it again but now he was really looking, it wasn't there at all. Perhaps the trick was to pretend that he wasn't paying attention. Hachi tried that, something strange twisting in him.
He didn't like deceptions.
Of course that was what it took to trigger the soul to climb into his arms on its own. "I'm sorry," he told it mournfully. His tail was practically between his legs.

He kept his eyes closed as he re-entered the Vocivus, but he felt the same ordinary sense of rejuvenation.
Not that, er, rejuvenation was ever ordinary. But you know what Hachi meant.
