Rennati hadn't really ever ridden a horse before, though she thought they were majestic creatures. It had been one of the things she had been looking forward to during her training and was so excited that the day had come. She had been a little nervous, though, looking at some of the horses that were getting passed out. Thankfully, the teacher handed her one who's name was Toby and was seeming pretty relaxed!
As if the world were smiling on her for once, the horse stayed in place as she stuck her left foot in the stir-up. Ren almost fell since it was so high up but her hands gripped tightly to the saddle kept her from falling. With the horse still standing perfectly still, she swung her other leg up and over like she had seen everyone else do. Her face beamed even though she had almost fallen off the other side.

Zin finally kicked her horse harder than usual, and though it wasn't enough to hurt her, Vivi raised her head from the ground to lower her ears and snort. She walked forward reluctantly before proceeding to travel in the wrong direction, angling away from the track. Luckily she wasn't headed toward the hurdles, but she wasn't going the right way either.
"Hey! Listen!" Zin groaned, tugging the reins in an attempt to get her to turn. At this rate, they would never make a lap around the track.

Lenore sighed a little sigh as she walked up to the designated horse. It wasn't her first time riding, but that first time hadn't gone perfectly. She gave the horse a wary stare, as if to say without speaking that she didn't trust it as far as she could throw it. And, let's face it, the scrawny twelve year old wasn't going to be winning any horse throwing competitions. The horse merely stared back, with a look in its eyes that Lenore could have sworn she recognized. Reaching out to the horse, she belatedly remembered what it was - hatred. The horse's head shot forward, hellish maw agape, as it tried to devour the girl whole.
Or, you know, bite her hand.
Either way, the girl wasn't having it. Her hand retreated backwards faster than she realized she could move, and the horse got a big mouthful of nothing. It stared at her, disappointed, before turning away. Lenore stared back, her attention fully fixed on that evil equine's mouth. She cautiously put one foot into the stirrup, her attention never leaving the horse. Likewise, the horse stared back at her, searching for an opening. Disappointed when it found none. But unrelenting even so. The girl finally managed to get her self into the saddle, but still she stared at the horse, unwilling to give it an opportunity.

Lenore tried to kick the horse into moving, but it simply remained focused on her. "Come.. on... you... stupid.... horse....!" She muttered, kicking in between each word, but the horse still wouldn't move.

Zin tugged on the reins, but the horse refused to change its course; Vivi made a beeline for the next clump of grass and lowered her head to eat it. "There are more important things to be done than eat," Zin informed the mare impatiently. Vivi didn't seem to agree; walking in circles wasn't as interesting as eating, in her opinion, and she was oblivious to Zinnia's urges.

Time to try again. Axel decided to lay some sugar on the horse. Maybe if he pretended to be a Horse Person like Tala, the horse would cooperate.
"That's okay, horse," he said, patting its mane. "You're such a good, cute widdle horsey-worsey, aren't you? You can try again."
The horse seemed unimpressed, but started to walk towards the course. The mare walked right up to the first hurdle and stood there impassively, gazing off into the distance.

The next week had come along. And..quite frankly, Shun wasn't too sure how this was going to go. He had never ridden a horse before. But, he was determined to learn properly.
He waited for his turn, then was handed the reigns of Comet. He certainly seemed lively.
The man got on up, then readied himself to hit the course.

Comet was a little hard to control. Even so, Shun managed to keep him relatively on course. Each hurdle had been jumped successfully, and he had finished the lap without any major issues. Upon finishing the first lap, he gave the horse a light pat on the side of the neck.

Farvardin stood with everyone else and fidgeted slightly. It certainly wasn't from excitement. She was pretty indifferent to horses: she didn't really like or dislike them. No her fidgeting was from nervousness. She and her older brother, Mithras, had a history with horses. No matter how friendly the horse or how friendly the siblings were to them, the horses hated them. She couldn't tell you how many times she had nearly been bitten, bucked, or kicked. Thus she tended to avoid riding if she could. But since she wanted to join the Survey corps she would have to try and work out this problem with horses.
When the instructor told them to pair up with a horse Farvardin was left behind in the mad rush to pick one. She stood there for a moment and walked up to one of the remaining horses left. She stopped just before the mare and frowned. She was glaring at her. Definitely not a good sign. "Hi girl.... pretty horsie... um... Liberty... Mind if I call you Libby?" She said softly. The horse nickered and she took that as a yes. She took up the reins and quickly dropped them as Libby immediately tried to bite her. "WHOA!" She yelped. Yep this was going to go really well.
She grabbed the reins again and this time was able to attempt mounting. The horse shied away from her leaving her to hop or fall down. Thus began her pathetic dance of getting on the horse. After ten minutes or so she was finally able to get on. She eyed the jumping course and knew that was out. There was no way Libby was going to let her jump. Plus she wasn't experienced enough for that. She could easily count the number of times she had ridden on one hand.
"Okay Libby.... let's just do some basic walking." She said signaling the horse to head to the outer track. The horse tossed her head and neighed loudly. She didn't move but grew rather stiff as her muscles tightened. Farvardin prayed that the horse didn't try to buck her today.

After much coaxing and a couple of unsuccessful bucking attempts Farvardin managed to get her horse to move. She somehow got Libby to the outer track and was trying to just get her to walk. However once on the track Libby put back her ears and just stopped. "Uh... please go Libby. We gotta get at least one lap down." She pleaded. The bucking began again as Libby didn't want to do anything but get the foolish hateful human off of her.

Farvardin managed to hang on for the bucking and finally Libby settled down. She gently nudged the horse into a walk. Time to try again. This time it seemed they would make it. Libby was walking and following directions. However about halfway around the track Libby decided she had had enough. She suddenly bolted and began running all over the field. "WATCH OUT!!!!!" She yelled as she clung on desperately. Maybe she should rethink joining the Survey corps.

"See you at the end!" Jeong-jae nodded at the losing punishment and then began to steer his horse around the edge of the field. Toby was surprisingly agreeable about the course (not that it was difficult) and the boy felt like he was doing pretty well for his first try in a long time! Watching the other riders as he got going, he winced at the hurdle challenge but felt tempted to give it a go too. Maybe he'd try it out after completing this first course.
"Good job! I feel like I should give you a carrot." Patting the horse's head once they reached the end, Jeong-jae wished he could reward Toby for being awesome about everything. The horse had taken the lead for him when chaos with the other trainees was occuring and plodded around the path at a comfortable and pleasant pace. Stopping at the end, he waited for Hwan-jae to arrive and smirked at him knowingly as he saw his brother still making it around the second turn.

He'd managed to at least get on the horse but Hwan had not made much progress beyond that. Vivi did not want to budge no matter how much he proded and he wondered what he was doing wrong. Should he ask her nicely with please or something? He might not be able to get a horse to drink but he wanted to at least lead it to the water.
"Oh come on, girl, I don't want to sleep on the floor."He murmured quietly to her but it was in vain. Jeong passed him like a boss with a smirk and the cockier twin felt some of that confidence slip away.

Libby finally gave up on running and stopped at the far end of the field near the outer track. She began to nibble on some grass there slightly content. She flicked her ears back when she heard the human on her cry out in relief. Oh yeah that thing was still there. Maybe it was time to lose it.
An evil glint appeared in Libby's eyes as she raised her head. She turned it to look back at the human clinging to her. Yes yes it was time to get this thing off of her. She was tired of all of this crap. She tensed her muscles and a well timed rear made the human just slip from the saddle and fall to the ground. She gave a happy neigh and pranced off to a new patch of grass leaving the human.

"Alright, Scout, let's take it easy for the first lap, okay?" Larisa might have had a little more experience with horses than the others seemed to, but that didn't mean she was quite prepared to go jumping hurdles yet. Some of the others had, with varying success, and while she moved out towards the outer area, she watched Shakuntala move through the course with admiration. Maybe if her lap went well, she could try that too.
Humming, she started her first lap. Scout was a good, sociable horse and followed her lead easily, though for a brief second she'd thought the horse had been about to go see what the other horses were doing instead. As they reached the end, she eyed the course again. It couldn't hurt to try, could it?
