 Eros finally peeled himself away from the tree he'd been resting against since they'd arrived. He dropped his coat on the grass, then followed it with his light sweater. He really ought to have brought the valet along to hold his things. Atop the pile of clothing, Eros carefully placed his satchel, Dido still inside, presumably asleep. After extracting his water bottles, Eros reluctantly set to the task at hand.

Eros leaned down to half-heartedly splash a bottle into the pool of water. Well, that wasn't so hard. The full bottle was heavy, though. Again, he regretted the absence of the valet. [13]

Eros glanced back at his discarded pile of possessions. The camp wasn't too far. His things would be safe for a few minutes, surely. If anything untoward did happen, Dido could fight someone off. Probably. Both arms weighed down by the full water bottle, Eros stumbled toward the camp.

Eros returned to the pool relatively quickly, relieved of his burden. His things seemed undisturbed. With a sigh, he reached for his second water bottle. The boy yelped as he slipped on the edge of the pool. The bottle went flying, but Eros managed to escape a dunking. He did, however, have to fish out his bottle, carefully rolling up one silk sleeve.

After drying his hand as best he could on the grass -- he refused to do so on his clothing -- and rolling up his other sleeve, Eros went in for another scoop with his remaining bottle. Ah, there, another full bottle. [14]

Anise grabbed another of the scattered water bottles and reached to scoop some water. But the water came up sandy again, so she dumped it out and went to look for a cleaner spot.

And he was back in the water. Ugh, he was getting soaked. Lets try it this way. He stood and decided to fill the bottle from the middle of the river.

Anise tried to lean into the water to gather some farther from shore, but she slipped and ended up with both feet in the water. At least she'd already rolled up her pants.

Since she was already in the water, it was easy enough to reach out far enough that she could gather clear water. She capped the bottle and brought it back to camp.

Anise collected another water bottle and went back to the water's edge, but found that everything nearby was clouded. She didn't bother trying to gather water from there and just moved along. Perhaps they should try filtering the water instead?
