Again stop looking at the other rabbits. He looked forward at the finish line. It was so close. He needed to push hard and leave it all behind now. He was going to finish pushing himself to the limit. If afterwards he was tired and sore, that was fine as long as he did the best his body could handle. Concentrate on the placement of your paws and push you're legs hard.

 Charcoal was ready. He hadn't really been doing anything for anybody recently and felt that being a runner would finally make him useful. He'd found that her really did want to useful and important....but the role of officer wasn't for him. But maybe, just maybe, earning prestige through the races was.

And then the race started and he took one step forward and nearly chicken out before accepting he would bee at the back of the pack and starting to run.

That was better. He was now in the middle of the pack and gaining speed. He nearly laughed for joy at finally getting the hang of this.

Thicket was more than eager to try himself as a runner. When he heard what was going on, he headed straight towards the area where one of the Owsla was supervising races. Stretching, he thumped the ground and took off.

He'd fallen back a little and was frustrated. Why was this so hard? He knew he could do it.

He got off to a decent start, knowing that if he started at his full tilt, he'd be tired by the race's end.

After a bit, he sped up just a little, hoping he could push himself a bit more. Slow and stead wasn't going to win this kind of race!

A bend in the race course caused him to slow down just a bit; he didn't much care for the idea of tripping and falling flat on his face in front of the others. Better to slow down a little than stop completely.

A little more speed now but still near the middle of the pack. Damn. If he couldn't go faster he'd never make anything below fourth and no runner had ever been named so after getting fourth place!

The race course got a bit rocky, slowing him down quite a bit.

A stumble and the loss of a bit more speed. He was near the back again. He'd completely lose this race if a miracle didn't happen.

He could see that he was lagging a bit and willed his muscles to push him on further. He was just hoping that he didn't get dead last. That would be pretty embarrassing.

The course flattened out in front of him and he put on a burst of speed, pulling ahead by a few paces.

He was near the back again. He wasn't going to be first, that was for sure, but the race was nearly over. No sense quitting now.
