Frith and Inle`! What am I going to do?
Buck's name: Eider
Personality: Eider’s biggest strength is perhaps his greatest weakness: His eagerness to please. Despite the relative gruffness of his parents, he’s got a big heart. He feels deeply for other rabbits and their wishes, though his parents’ training has this hidden away in his secret thoughts. He’s not a talkative rabbit and occasionally, when pulled in too many directions from too many demands, he flat-out clams up, almost like a mental breakdown, until he can figure out exactly what he should do. Slightly afraid of his parents, he feels more awe than true affection towards them. The same is true of most other rabbits- despite his bulk, he is pretty easily cowed by a more aggressive warren member. He’s really not the most clever of rabbits- duplicity is not in his nature whatsoever- and he’s honest to the point of being blunt. He’s a good soul and does his best to be what his parents want him to be. Unfortunately, the son his parents want might not be in his nature…
What direction would you head this buck in? Away. Literally away. At least for a while. Here’s the plot I have thought out for him:
Well aware of his siblings’ issues, he pushes himself. Hard. He wants to do something, anything right in his parents’ eyes.
Then something happens, and he can’t deal with it. A death, perhaps caused by his actions or inactions. An encounter with a fox while out at silflay that ends in tragedy? A hawk snagging an outskirter while he’d meant to be standing guard? Whatever the event, he’ll think that his parents and the entire warren will blame him- and he’ll truly believe that it’s his fault and his fault alone. Nobody will say anything about it, but the looks on their faces will be enough.
And so he’ll run. Like the coward he thinks he is, he’ll leave the warren, fleeing in the dead of night like a gutless scavenger. I’m assuming that his parents will chalk him up to being dead, or at least think of him as such because the alternative- a son too frightened to face his own parents- is too difficult.
He’ll wander for a while, searching for a place that he can truly belong. He won’t find it. Not in another warren, not in the woods, and not among the hlessi.
While he’s wandering, though, he’ll be trying to figure out what he can do to restore himself to his warren’s good graces. He’ll largely have given up on trying to impress his parents.
And that’s when he’ll meet another much like himself. Another warrenless rabbit- but not by choice. By circumstance. Perhaps a pet of humans that had accidentally gained freedom? Perhaps a rabbit who is just naturally smaller and weak. This rabbit will tag along with him, under protest at first. Eider will be too concerned with his own problems and not want to have to watch out for a creature even more pitiable than he. Grudgingly, he’ll come to teach and care for this stranger, not realizing that in the other rabbit’s eyes, he’s become more than just a miserable outcast. Over time, he’ll gain the confidence he never had- he’ll realize that he’s more than just the sum of his parents and that he’s not disappointed with himself anymore. And that is when he’ll take his new friend and head home, confident at last that he’s got something to contribute to the warren.
Whether or not his parents feel the same is inconsequential at this point. He will always love and respect them, but no more will he be afraid.
