Caelius was talking about something or the other, but Eva didn't even bother lifting her head. She was too weak, too tired, too--

A trainee is only as useful as their purpose.

Her head jerked up at that, and then she cringed in pain at the way her head reeled dizzily at the sudden movement. Was he implying--or rather, outright stating--that that was that? What had been a well-intentioned mistake would cost them--Reine, Clerise, Dakota, and Rep, all of whom were still in decent shape--their heads? Forcing herself to face Caelius, she opened her mouth to tell him exactly what she thought of that when she suddenly Circe's blade sweeping through the air.

And right into Reine.

"REINE!" With what little strength she still had, she tried to lunge forward, but the shockwave sent her slamming back into the ground. More tears slid down her cheeks as she stared directly in front of her, blearily taking in the figure sprawled on the ground. Though their face was turned away, there was no doubt as to who it was.

The last thing Eva saw before she finally lost consciousness was her friend's still body laying in front of her.

Even as Caelius went on his hateful, spiteful diatribe, Clerise refused to whimper. It did nothing to conceal the open fear and anger writ across her face, lip curled like some bestial creature.

The blade pressed against her neck, thrumming with an energy all its own. Fearsome, as it had...consumed the beast it struck, absorbing it until it dissipated into blue.

Her only thought was, "so this was how it felt to be at the hand of a hunter" repeatedly running through her mind.

She shifted barely a millimeter, and the metal of Caelius' weapon sliced into her skin, rivulets of red running down her neck as a result.

Clerise held in the weeping that threatened to burst from her chest, and she didn't dare move again until it was lifted from her throat.

Never had precious oxygen tasted so delectable. So she panted, wishing she could cling at her neck, to rub away the blood clinging to her neck and chest--

THUD.

"Ohmygod," Clerise sobbed, looking at Reine's collapsed figure on the ground. "Oh my GOD-- REINE-- Reine, are you--"

Her strength left her in a singular and fell swoop, black fading in around her eyes, but the images she'd seen on this day would cling to her for a long, long time.

The red haired hunter felt like he was a child again as Cael returned to enlighten them further as to their failure. He could hardly even bring himself to look at the man as he spoke, the detachment of his tone, the cold calculating chill of his words all the more painful. It made their fight, their attempts to keep their secrets seem as irrelevant as dust on the breeze.

He watched in horror as the man looked set to cut Clerise's head off, the hum of the blade all the more terrifying and potent given how easily the man had just defeated the creature that had been threatening them. He couldn't even relax as the Death leader moved away, just as on alert now as he had been when the monster had waved the bug over Eva's ear.

His body couldn't maintain this level of adrenaline indefinitely however and the searing, aching bite of the ropes was giving way to desperate and more urgent pain, no longer thrown off radar by the primal terror from before. He tried to ignore it, tried very hard to listen. He wanted to know, wanted to understand what they had done wrong.

And as he understood, he felt no better. They had disobeyed orders. They were meant to look, instead they got involved, they fought. They fell for the children. It was their own fault. They weren't meant to help people, they were meant to understand threats. Other people it seemed were as disposable as they were. He wanted to talk back, wanted to try and defend them from the cutting words. But for the first time in as long as Rep could remember, there were no scathing comebacks, there were no words. Just shame.

And then movement.

A final kick of panic as the scythe swung out, much too close, much MUCH too close, close enough he could feel the breeze as it arched past him.

But someone wasn't as lucky as him. He looked over in sinking horror to see who the unfortunate person had been, and couldn't believe his eyes. Once again it was like he was outside himself, looking in, watching this insane and vivid scene unfold from some safe place in his thoughts.

That couldn't be Reine. He couldn't have just done that. They were on the same side.

They had tried so hard.

He finally gave up, stopped trying to make sense of it, stopped trying to find some way out of it.

They had failed.

Clarice had implied if he was too much of a burden on Deus he would be removed, he had tried to change, tried to beat the seemingly impossible curve to adapt and be worthy. And seemingly, he was still found wanting. His chance was up.

He closed his eyes and slumped against the floor all the more, overwhelmed with pain, exhaustion and defeat, cold and numb to even the distant sound of screaming, no longer even able to tell if it was real or in his head.

Dakota frowned as Caelius came back and explained what was going on, what made them useful and useless. He flinched and then struggled against the bonds when Circe, the death leaders scythe breathed a inch of Clerise's neck.

And then he watched as he moved slowly down them, watching and judging them. He felt the sting of failure and he watched as Caelius centered on Reine.

The hell he would let him just-

Dakota nearly shrieked as Crice swung forward, his hands fought against the rope bonds so hard that blood dripped from the burned and torn flesh of his wrist. His voice yelled so loud as the shockwave hit him .........

And he watched the first and only girl he liked head roll towards him. He could only stare blankly at it. Her beautiful white hair and her blue eyes, opened in shock. He stared in horror and he stared with grief and he did the only think he could.

"{You ******** heartless ******** b*****d...." He wriggled against the bonds, "I'll ******** kill you, I'll make you regret every killing her. I'll make sure you wish you never ******** let me on this goddamn mission." He sputtered in rage before quieting..."I'll make sure when the time comes, I will kill you with everything I am.." Hate, grief and regret burned in those orange eyes. Into the very soul of Dakota.

For as long as he lived, This moment would concrete his hate for the Death division leader. To him, this just became personal....

"Reine...Reine I never got to tell you..." He chocked now on tears as he scooted his chair...tears welled in his young eyes. "I never got to tell you that I liked you, That I wouldn't to get to know you....That I wanted to do more then just flip your skirts and-" He choked on a sob and hung his head. He was done.

He was spent, there was nothing inside him that even felt like himself. Dakota Rainstar had just watched his first love die......

Following Clerise's rant she heard the tapping of his shoes on the ground, each creak of the floorboards ringing in her ears, getting louder as he moved closer to them, until suddenly everything was quiet again. She waited an eternity for him to speak up, exerting all her strength to angle her head upwards. There was no way she could meet his eyes, not after all this, after she had again disobeyed direct orders..

It had nearly cost her her life the first time.

Now, she would be lucky if he made it quick for her. Please, she wanted to beg, please, just end this. She knew she didn't deserve it, and that she couldn't ask for any favours from him. Reine was beginning to cry, silently, tears trickling down her cheeks. His voice, cool and calm as always, hurt so much, as if he was driving daggers into her heart-- well aware of what that entailed--

She remembered coming out of the pod, tumbling ungracefully onto the cold floor. Meeting him for the first time, and then the other phoenixes. Remembered realising that Robert and Petra were there, too, remembered crying to Jordan. She would never see those faces again.

-- so you died --

Caelius' speech was like a lullaby, now, his tone almost gentle, his words blending together so she could barely make them out. Reine's head drooped, her eyes closing again.

Thud.

It hurt less this time, Circe smashing into the side of her head, ending everything. It was easier this way, not having to face them again, not having to answer for anything. There was a small smile on Reine Walker's face as she thought of home, of her mom tucking her into bed, stroking her hair and kissing her on the forehead, telling her everything was going to be fine.

And then the world went black.

Trainees.

Cindy remembered being one, she remembered what it was like to be have to work from the very, very bottom, fighting and struggling every moment of her life until she was promoted. Even then, being a full-fledged Hunter was still a b***h.

But not even trainees deserved this. Nor the Hunters that passed away before them: yet when it came to practicality and resources, of course it was the trainees that went first. Practically all the Division leaders called them expendable, the other half called them entertainment.

As the other Hunters finally managed to get clearance, carrying the remaining trainees away, shouting for a portal to be constructed immediately, for more medical attention, for an experienced Life or Moon Hunter, she slowly walked over to the body. They would have been a cute Hunter, it was obvious from their thin frame though that they were possibly just not meant for this job.

Another Hunter nudged her, a Moon Hunter. Arnold. "Hey, it's okay. We can move her along with the other vi-"

"- No, I got this." With a small sigh, she leaned over lifting up one bloodied arm. It was still warm, it was unnerving, the way that the blood was still pulsing, the way that her body still seemed to move, to heave slowly, weakly-

- All alarms went off in her head. "Can I get a Life Hunter over here?" She began unfastening a fresh roll of bandages to apply pressure to the wound immediately, her own heart beating fast. "We still have one more survivor here."
