"The...the things!" he hissed, his ice blue eyes shifting back and forth quickly taking in their surroundings...checking to be sure. "What if they come back? What if there are more of them..."

She blinked at him rapidly then shrugged. "If they come back then you'll tell me and I'll scare 'em off like I did before. If they don't run, I'll just squash them. Don't worry, Pa, I've got your back," she beamed at him, giving him her most reassuring smile... which may have also been her most reckless smile....

"And..." Pavlov started slowly. "And what if it doesn't work one day?" He questioned. "I guess I'll just be scared all the time, again. Which isn't really so different from what I've always known..." he muttered to himself.

“Exactly!” she grinned. “So really, you won’t be any worse off than you already are. In fact, you might even be better off! You’ll have some good memories and may better coping mechnisisms, and I’ll get to have some truly awesome brawls! Er… I mean, you’ll be able to live without fear for awhile… or…something?”

Taking a brief moment's respit from the incessant specters that haunted his life, Pavlov regarded the little mare critically (or at least something that passed as critically for Pavlov). "You...really like fighting...why?" His voice was still soft and uncertain, but a hint of curosity tinted it.

"Yep!" Zahavah agreed, perhaps too cheerfully. It never even occurred to her to deny it. "It's a lot of fun! Have you ever tried it? You totally should!"

Pavlov shifted nervously and shook his head pretty vigorously, letting his streaked mane fall into his face. "I'm really more of a 'run and hide' kind of guy," he said quietly. "You know, see the monster, fight the paralyzing fear, wish it wasn't there, and then run in terror." He added hastily, "Most days I really wish I could move the run in terror up to step one but....that's not so easy." Pavlov kicked at the ground restlessly, "That's why you're so amazing."

“Of course I’m amazing,” Zahavah agreed, without an ounce of modesty. She preened a bit. “But you’re fine, you know. You don’t have to fight. Lots of soquili don’t fight. They’re not cowards or lesser or anything like that. Besides, I think you’re pretty brave. I mean, I bet anyone else who saw the things you saw would be a quivering puddle of fear. At least you still got bones. And you get to the running eventually, yeah? Not me, though. I’m not afraid of anything. My ma said that wasn’t a good thing. Said it was healthy to be afraid, but eh. What can you do, yeah? Oh! That means we’ll work really well together, yeah? You being afraid of everything and me being afraid of nothing? This is going to be awesome! What do you see over there?”

Pavlov listened to Zah's mini speech but he wasn't so convinced. While he didn't claim much in his life, he was pretty sure the title of "coward" was all his and had been for a very long time. Anyone more than a coward wouldn't cringe in terror crying "Not there" and hoping for the best (often not seeing it come to life). He followed the direction she indicated and looked at simple vegetation. "Flowers..." he said slowly. "And some grass, under the tree." He closed his eyes and sighed deeply, his shoulders shrugging with defeat. "Give it time, you know they'll come eventually."

“Do they always come? Or does it only seem like that?” She had to wonder if he only saw what he expected. Maybe if she could convince him that not everything was terrifying, he wouldn’t see such monsters everywhere. And even if he did, she would be there to stomp on his hallucinations. Or tell him if he’s actually seeing what was there.

"They...always seem to come?" He offered hesitantly. "Especially when I start to believe they're gone, that's when it gets really bad," Pavlov sighed and stomped his hoof to the ground in frustration. "So if I look for them I see them and if I don't look for them...." He cringed. "Well then I Really see them."

“So… they’re always there,” Zahavah nodded sagely. “Alright! We should camp here, tonight, and then tomorrow, we’ll find someone for you to interact with. Your rehab begins then!” she declared.

Pavlov frowned but began to nudge some soft grasses together for a bed. "Ah good, nightmare time," he said glumly. "My favorite. Zah, are you certain about this plan?"

"That's...almost reassuring..." he muttered sleepily as he closed his eyes and send up a quick prayer for a peaceful night of rest.
