Though he could hear Desmond and Klyde, Shun tried to tune them out. He really wanted to be alone right now. Even more, he was wishing he wasn't here. Then again.. he wasn't tied down. There was nothing keeping him from trying to get away.

Closing his eyes for a little while, he tried to not thing about Mitsu, but it was impossible. It was maddening. And he knew there were still those who wanted him dead out there.

Gritting his teeth, he pulled out his IV and started to roll so he could get out of the bed. He needed to get away from here. Surely there one of his enemies would notice how vulnerable he was and just pick off what was left of him. Pain shot through his body as he moved. His body felt incredibly weak. Though he managed to get to his feet, he stumbled and was forced to lean against the nearby wall. The assassin looked pale and he was a complete mess in general.

"K-klyde?" Desmond asked, using his free hand to cover his eyes so he could slowly open them without the risk of being blinded by light.

A hospital? He'd never been in a hospital before... The thought of being around nothing but sick people was unpleasant, to say the least. Now it seemed he was one of them...

Listening to his cousin speak, Desmond tried to process everything. His head was whirling. What had happened?

The vampire sat there quietly for a couple of minutes, thinking to himself, trying to remember...

'Till it hit him like a truck.

Immediately opening his bloodshot eyes, he looked up at Klyde with fear written all over his face.

"Klyde... Where's Mitsu?"

It took him a second to focus his vision, but when he could finally see, his eyes caught a glimpse of Shun's (barely) retreating form. "What the.."

Klyde's eyes went as wide as Desmond's when the vampire seemed to finally settled into reality and figure out what had gone on. Now it was a tricky subject...how much did Desmond know of what happened? They had both been seemingly gone when he, Riyo, and Blade had gotten there.

"She's...here." Klyde said carefully. "How much of what happened do you remember?" He didn't just want to throw out the 'your girlfriend came back around after being dead' bit if Desmond didn't know. It would be bad enough telling him she was hurt he imagined, but if he thought she had been dead or about to die it might be relieving news to hear she had come back.

As soon as Shun pulled away from his IV unit and the other things he had been hooked up to a signal had been sent to the nurses station. As quick as possible one of them came in through the door their eyes already focused on Shun's bed...but he wasn't there. It only took a second or two later for them to see him propped up against the wall trying to make his exit.

"And what do you think you're doing?" The nurse nearly demanded rushing over to the boy to help him back to bed. "You shouldn't be out of bed. Explain." She was like a mother wanting an explanation for why their child had broken curfew.

Hearing the exchange between the two vampires, Shun froze and slowly turned towards them.

"...Here?" he repeated, "But how..? She.."

The look he gave Klyde was an uncharacteristic one. It was one of confusion, pain, and a dash of hope. Why would Mitsu be here if she was dead? There was no mistaking it either. Her heart had gone still while she was in his arms.

He was going to elaborate, but the nurse called to his attention.

"There's no point in me staying here..." he said lowly.

Desmond had been expecting to hear something to the effect of "Oh, she's just in the other room waiting for you to wake up." Or "She fell asleep crying."

"She's here." stripped away a lot of hope.

Shun's uncertainty didn't seem to help. She's what?

"... I remember telling her to run away." Desmond started, looking down at his free hand. "Because there was a searing pain on my back... And I was having trouble moving."

It was hard to relive it so soon... "And she started running... But that b*****d caught up to her, so I forced myself up... And..."

"... I was sure that I was gonna die."

It was a hard thing to admit, considering he had been so sure of his immortality. It was the only damn thing he had going for him and that didn't even seem to play out right. "Please tell me what happened Klyde.."

"Oh really?" The nurse asked Shun with a raised brow. "No point at all?" Reaching toward him she aimed to poke one of the more nastier injures she knew he had. It would probably hurt but it would prove a point. She wasn't always the nicest of nurses.

"Pain in your back," Klyde nodded a little. "They told me it looked like you had been burned...by a large cross." Klyde said a little more softly. At least Desmond would have an idea of why his back hurt so badly but it was kind of distressing thinking that whoever had attacked them had been prepared for a vampire as well. What did that mean?

It also didn't help ease Klyde's mind at all when Desmond mentioned he was sure he was going to die. Stammering a bit with his words, Klyde focused his attention to the window in the room. And Klyde had forgotten, Shun had been awake for when Mitsu was out but not when she had come back around. "I don't know...exactly what happened I can only tell you what I saw when I got there and what the doctors have told us. Mitsu is upstairs in her own room, she was hurt pretty badly. When we got to the scene we thought....you both were gone." Klyde wasn't sure if he should elaborate on Mitsu's injures or if that would only upset Desmond.

"She came back around a few minutes after we got there and the ambulances came for everyone. They said she's pulled through the worst of it though and she should recover but it will take time." Klyde wasn't sure how much that might lighten the situation but it was sort of good news. "I'm glad....you're not...." Klyde didn't seem to be able to finish his sentence his confidence shot to hell. What would he have done if Desmond had really been gone?

Letting out a cry of pain as the gash in his chest was prodded, Shun nearly went down with just that. While he was fairly good at hiding pain, even he had his limits. He was going to retort to the nurse, but Klyde's words once again caught his attention.

"You mean.. she.. she's alive..?" he managed to get out. A part of him wondered if he had heard wrong, but the vampire elaborated, "She survived..?"

A huge wave of relief washed over him, but the news made his body weak again. Practically slumping down against the wall as his legs gave out, he could feel his eyes welling up with tears. He wasn't even really able to describe how he felt there to know she hadn't died. There were still many things burdening him, but just this one relief was immense.

"Thank god..." he sputtered, his voice wavering as he was trying to fight back the tears. He wasn't supposed to cry. Or allowed to. He had already broken once but it was just so damn hard to fight it now.

A large cross? The guy's weapon must've been ******** blessed. That's why it'd hurt so bad... "Figures... I bet that'll leave a nice scar." Though he had no idea just how big it was...

As Klyde began to explain what had happened to Mitsu, Desmond's eyes slowly started to widen. Sure, she wasn't dead. But... To think she had been so close... To think... He could've woken up in a world without her.

Growling, Desmond yanked the handcuff with all his strength, causing the small chain to snap... But he didn't go on the rampage. Instead, he cupped his face with both hands, almost ashamed to be seen.

"What good am I, Klyde?" Desmond asked after a few silent minutes, completely ignoring his cousin's relieved statement. "I don't breathe, I hold no warmth, and I feed off the people I love... I thought, at the very least.. I'd have no trouble protecting her. That this body could at least do that... But I got taken down in less than four hits..."

So ******** useless...

And, as usual, the fact that Shun seemed so relieved only worsened Desmond's self-loathing... It had been really bad, then.

"What good am I..."

Oh sweet Jesus....Klyde wasn't sure how this situation had digressed so quickly. Shun was on the other side of the room relieved to ....tears? and his cousin was sinking into a pit of self loathing. He felt like he could nearly choke on all the emotion. "Hey, you did what you could. This guy seemed like he was strong.....and prepared." Prepared, indeed. It was hard to overlook the fact the guy had a cross weapon. "Desmond he was prepared with a holy weapon which either means he had dealt with vampires or creatures like us before....or knew you would be there." Klyde wasn't always the sharpest tool but sometimes he could put two and two together. Riyo would be proud.

"Besides, I'm sure when Mitsu wakes up she'll want to see you and none of that will matter." Klyde couldn't help but glance over toward Shun again still in amazement the boy had the capability to show any other emotion other than displeased or pissed.

The nurse merely looked at Shun when he went down, that 'I told you so' look on her face. "That's what I thought. Let's get you back to bed." But he seemed so surprised about the survival of the girl upstairs, though she had been pretty bad off. It seemed like he was going to cry and the nurse wasn't entirely sure if it was the surprise or the fact that she had poked him. "Oh, sweetheart." She cooed softly kneeling down toward the boy.

"I'm sorry, let's get you back so you can rest a little. I'm sure you can visit the little girl upstairs eventually." The nurse said trying to help lift Shun up so that he wouldn't be left sitting on the floor. For being petite, the woman seemed rather strong. During her attempt to aid him she heard a sharp 'ping' of metal and looked over to see the vampire had broken his cuff. "Well I guess...I'll go get the key in a minute." Since the cuff obviously wasn't doing any good at this point.

Shun would have snapped at the nurse for calling him sweetheart but there were just too many things running through his mind right now. Allowing himself to be helped up, he gritted his teeth and focused on trying to fight back the tears still. He heard the words Desmond was saying... which echoed his own inner thoughts to some extent. Not so much of the whole being dead thing, but the thought of being utterly worthless despite what skills he had and the like. Hearing them caused those feelings to resurface as well.

"Does it matter how strong or prepared he was?" he hissed towards Klyde, "He took out all three of us and got away with m-minimum injuries!"

Wincing as speaking sharply tugged at his wounds some, he closed his eyes tightly and wasn't able to keep himself from crying any longer. As glad as he was to hear Mitsu was alive, it didn't change the fact that she had... died there. That she was now badly injured. He still didn't believe she deserved any of that.

"You wouldn't be saying that if it was Riyo." Desmond immediately snapped, eyes looking up from his hands with fury... Though he started to feel bad after a few seconds. Klyde was only trying to help...

"... I'm sorry." Desmond mumbled, looking back down at himself... The fact that his rival was crying gave the vampire no satisfaction, nor was he appalled... He knew how the guy felt. "Shun's right though... He almost wiped out the three of us with little effort... What happens if he comes back?" Though.. Why he'd been so prepared and keen on ending all of them was still a mystery. Why would anybody have a personal vendetta against Mitsu?

Moreover... Would everything really be okay once she woke up?

Klyde didn't quite know what to say when Desmond snapped at him. Shun snapping at him really didn't phase him but his cousin was another matter. If Riyo had been the one who was hurt he would probably feel just as useless. He had felt that way before back at camp. If he had been a little quicker, looked for her a little sooner, she never would have had to deal with the hive boys and probably avoided the bear. It was a moment that haunted him from time to time but there was nothing he could do to change it.

"I...I don't know what to do," Klyde really had no answers. "Who was he? Do you know?" He then looked toward Shun who seemed to have given over to his emotions. The feeling was awkward but Klyde was curious to know. "Do you know who he was and what he wanted?"

"Hey, calm down. Yelling isn't going to help anything," The nurse instructed leading Shun back to bed whether he wanted to be there or not. "You need to get your rest. Just be thankful you all are alive and that soon you'll be up on your feet again. I'm sure your friend upstairs would be happy to see you up and about."

Coaxing the assassin back into bed, the nurse looked between the two boys. "I'm going to get the key for your....bracelet." It wasn't much of a cuff now. "Do you need anything else?" It didn't seem like much phased her, she had apparently worked at the hospital for a while.

Once he was back in the bed, Shun found himself staring at the ceiling for a little while, not answering Klyde right away. How much should he say? He swore to Mitsu he wouldn't say anything of Suto but...

"I.. can't say too much. I made a promise to Mitsu on that..." he started. His voice was still all too strong, but he managed to be coherent, "But apparently.. that was Ginji, her brother. Or at least he used to be... He was after me. F-from what I gathered he was there to kill me in front of Mitsu.."

Closing his eyes again, he brought up hand to his face to wipe away some of the tears. This was all a huge mess. Speaking out the details did not make him feel any better as he felt he should have been able to avert some of the trouble this had all become.

Promised... Mitsu?

Well, if Desmond didn't feel like s**t already, he certainly did now. Why would Mitsu tell Shun something.. But not him?

Was he... Not trustworthy enough? It was sortof a shot in the foot when he'd told her his deep, dark secrets and he apparently hadn't even scratched the surface.

Desmond's transformation went from miserable to devastated. He felt like... He didn't even know her.... And he couldn't even begin to process this new information. Frowning, he laid down (very carefully) on his side, facing away from the rest of the room. A little bit of him wished he was dead now...

And then the door opened again just as the nurse left. Peeking in quietly, Riyo looked for Klyde before walking up and taking his arm. She... Didn't look very happy, but at least she seemed better than in the alley. Little streaks of red stained her cheeks from where she'd been crying so much, and she'd left her hat in Mitsu's room... Which left her hair in a mess.

"Hey..." Quietly, she walked in and grabbed Klyde's hand, holding onto it tightly as if she was afraid he'd float away. "T-they told me... Visiting hours would be up soon." Meaning they'd pretty much kicked her out of the room. "So.. I guess we have to leave..."

Klyde looked a little shocked at the new information. The information itself and the fact that Mitsu had made Shun promise not to tell...and judging by Desmond's reaction he had no idea.

As the room started to slip further into doom and gloom Klyde was at a loss for what to say or do. He wanted to say something to cheer Desmond up but his cousin gave the impression he was done for the day by laying down with his back to him. That's when Riyo walked in. There was a god. Klyde turned toward the feline like his savior had just walked through the door.

"Alright, I...guess we'll come back tomorrow then." Klyde said stepping over toward Desmond. Quietly he spoke, gently placing a hand on his fellow vampire's shoulder. "Don't think too much about it. I'm sure there's a reason." Turning back around he left Desmond for now, reaching out to wrap his arm around Riyo as they walked out. He would ask how her friend was doing on the way back to the dorms because he had some crazy information to share as well.

---

A couple of days had passed with the group still in the hospital. Mitsu hadn't show any real signs of stirring in those days though her condition stayed about the same. As far as dreaming went, Mitsu's mind seemed to be a clash of reality and a nightmare. Nothing was very clear but it was obvious at times she was having a bad dream because her heart monitor would start to beep erratically. It always seemed to calm though when someone touched her, like an off button.

It was nearly night again when Mitsu began to stir from her sleep, her sore eyes not wanting to open up. Groaning softly Mitsu reached up to rub at her face and realized her arms were heavy and there was stuff in the way. Tugging again the IV in her arm pulled a little finally forcing her eyes to flutter open as she groaned again.

Confused her blurry vision first settled on the things attached to her arms as if trying to make out what they were for. Where was she? Tilting her head a little trying to take more in she placed her arm back down beside her. The next thing she was able to focus on was her stuffed panda Ludwig sitting in the bed next to her, his unseeing eyes focused on her. What had happened?

But she knew what had happened....at least somewhat. Her dreams had confused her but she was still fairly certain she had seen Desmond....die. That thought was devastating enough that tears began to gather in her tired eyes and start to stream down her cheeks. If only Ludwig could make this better. He was such a comfort any other time but right now it was like a cruel joke. And what of Shun? Was he okay?
