"Oh s**t. Way to go Rae." she thought to herself, her face crumpling as Alex walked past. "You've barely known this guy an hour and you've already put your foot in your mouth. There goes any hope you ever had of dating the guy..." Rae took a deep breath and resolved to think carefully about every answer she gave, and to try and keep things as neutral as possible so as not to offend anyone.
"I know we'll make excellent partners." She said as she followed him into the elevator. "I promise I'll get that whole foot-in-mouth thing under control." She gave Alex a sheepish smile. "You'll have to teach me that throw after our mission. Do you have any idea what it'll be?" Rae asked as the elevator dinged, doors opening to the floor Alaric's office was on.
Rae took another deep breath. Her first mission with her new partner. She hoped she wouldn't disappoint. The old guy - Alaric - made her nervous, and a bit uneasy. Rae decided she'd let Alex do most of the talking, and just smile and nod to avoid any other embarrassing moments on her first day. She hoped Alex would forgive her for being an idiot, but she'd make it up to him on the field.

Alex chuckled lightly when Rae mentioned the throw. He replied lightly, "Yeah, I'll be sure to teach you that. Judo can be a good style to know. As far as the mission goes... I'm not sure, but lately there have been a number of killings, involving young women, who've had their blood drained by a vampire. That could be what Alaric is sending us out for." Alex smiled back at her, at least she seemed to regret what she said slightly. He walked down the hall back towards Alaric's office, with Rae following behind him. He reached the doors, knocked four times then entered. Alaric was sitting at his desk, flipping through a folder of what Alex assumed was the evidence and case files for their next job. He looked up at the two of them and said, "I take it you two have had some time to acquaint yourselves. So, now it's time for your first job. Now, we've been tracking a serial killer, goes by the name of... Carapace. He's trash, just a lowlife turned vampire who's been feeding on everything that moves. He's found a particular interest in young women... he drains them dry and just leaves them to rot. You two should take a half-hour or so to clean up, get ready and such. Meet me back in here, and I'll discuss the specifics of what's going to happen." Alaric waved the two of them out and Alex nodded before leaving along with Rae.
===== 30 minutes later =====
Alex knocked on the door four times before entering Alaric's office, Rae entering right behind him. He stopped in front of the desk and waited for Alaric to explain the mission and where their taget was going to be.

"I swear to God, if they hired me to play Damsel in Distress for every mission, I'm quitting. Hot meals and a proper bed be damned. Although that shower was pretty nice..." Rae thought as she walked quickly down the street, her head bent against the wind. Alaric had explained that Rae was going to be bait for this sadistic vampire - Carapace - who had been brutally raping and killing innocent women before sucking them dry. He had been praying on the "trade" workers in the area, women no one but regular customers would miss if they died, and certainly not worthy of a police investigation.
"Disgusting." Rae thought as she continued to walk down the street, moving closer and closer to Carapace's end of town. "Come on, you b*****d." She had stopped walking and was now waiting, shivering in front of the mouth of a dark alleyway. The "perfect" spot for the type of transaction Carapace would have in mind. It was freezing, Rae's coat doing little to block out the biting wind. Not to mention the capris she wore left part of her legs bare. After all, what sort of hooker would wear pants? The coat was long enough to leave the impression Rae was in a skirt, and that would suffice. She wouldn't be caught dead in a skirt, and nothing Alaric said about looking the part was going to change that. He had been angry when she found a suitable alternate, but couldn't argue.
From underneath her hood, Rae noticed a man matching Carapace's description making his way towards her, a large grin on his face, cold blue eyes alight with a dark promise, his curly blond hair blowing in the wind. "Finally." she thought, plastering a smile to her face as he stopped in front of her. "Hello dah-lin'" He drawled,"I have sixty dollah's with your name on it if you can show me a good time." He nodded, inclining his head towards the alley behind them. Rae was offended. "A hundred." she demanded. Carapace removed her hood and lifted her chin, looking into her eyes as he chuckled."Ah ha...a pretty one. I haven't had one of those in a while. Alright dah-lin', one hundred it is. Now why don't we go put that pretty mouth of yours to use, hmm?" He asked, giving her a slight smack on the as to get her moving in the direction of the alley.
Rae bit back a growl, but led the way into the alley non-the-less. When she was sure they were far enough back they wouldn't be seen from the street, Rae turned to face him. He laughed and undid his zipper, exposing himself as he demanded she get on her knees. Rae clenched her teeth and went to her knees before him, however, instead of using her mouth, Rae grabbed his sack with her hand, twisted and pulled down as hard as she could. Before he could even scream, Rae was on her feet, and delt him two solid blows to the nose."You b***h!"He garbled through his broken nose, fangs sliding down over his bottom lip. "You'll pay for that!"Rae only smiled and ducked to the side as he dove at her in a blind rage. She ducked and swept his feet out from under him, punching him in the chest on the way down, knocking the wind from his lungs.
However, as he fell, Carapace grabbed a 2x4 from the heap of garbage beside them and swung it in her direction. Rae didn't move in time, and caught the 2x4 to her left shin. She felt in shatter, and cried out in pain as she went down. She had to bite her tongue to keep from calling out Alex's name. She knew he'd be someplace near by, and right now, he was her secret weapon. Rae was attempting to get back to her feet when she was viciously kicked in the face. She cried out again as she fell on her back, skidding to the wall of the building beside them."You're one tough b***h."Carapace growled as he stood above her while she tried to stand yet again."But you won't stand up after this."He drew his foot back and kicked her twice in the ribs, laughing maniacally.
"Alex..." His name was the last thought in her mind as she blacked out from the pain.

Alex watched from the rooftops as Rae walked down the street, moving from building to building, keeping an eye on things. He stopped and moved back towards the alley, so he could get a good view of the attacker and what Rae would do. He grimaced when he saw what she did to him, "Ouch... that's gotta hurt." He watched intently as the fight continued. He swore to himself when Carapace got the upper hand, feeling something pressing into his mind, he could tell that Rae needed help; she had unconsciously tried to open a mind link between them, just before she passed out. Growling, Alex teleported to the shadows where he wouldn't be seen, walked out and said to Carapace, "Hey, buddy! Try picking on someone your own size." Carapace turned to face Alex, growling as he did, and then saw the two pistols pointed at his head and slowly backed up to the wall, a scared expression on his face.
Alex grinned, his fangs showing as he heard Carapace pleading for his life and trying to make deals. Alex didn't care, he chuckled and said, "No one... hurts my partner... and gets away with it." Alex fired his pistols, hitting the vampire in the head and the heart, killing him nearly instantly. Alex, however, didn't stop firing until he was out of ammo. Carapace dropped to the ground, Alex looked down at him and spit on the corpse, before uncorking a bottle of water, and pouring it on the body, disintegrating it completely. He quickly turned his attention to Rae, who was still unconscious. He figured he could risk teleporting her back to base. He picked her up and whispered, "It's all right... you'll be fine... I promise." Alex teleported the two of them to the organization's med-bay, laying her on an unoccupied bed and placing his hands over her, using magic to heal her wounds. He was lucky she was still unconscious.
He waited by her side until she awoke to say something to her. When she did awaken, Alex smiled lightly, his fangs not showing at all, and said, "Feeling better I hope. Your wounds should be healed... Our med-bay uses magic to quickly heal wounds, hope you don't mind. Now come on, we should report back to Alaric." He stood and extended a hand to her, he was going to like working with her, he could tell already. One thing that puzzled him, was her ability to unconsciously try and create a mind link between them; Alex had never heard of such a thing, and he was fairly certain she didn't know he was a vampire. He was impressed by her sheer amount of potential, "She would make a good vampire..." he thought, before pushing the thought out of his mind, he knew there was no chance of that happening.

Rae was aware of being moved, and of someone whispering in her ear. She felt safe with whoever it was, so she didn't even bother summoning the energy to fight him off. Everything hurt, but her shin, ribs and face got the worst of it. If her nose was broken, it would be for the third time, and she was sure it wouldn't go back to being straight again.
It occurred to her that it was probably time to try and wake up. Safe feeling or not, she couldn't remember much in this state, and she didn't feel like being mugged. Rae fought her way back up to consciousness, and opened her eyes to a bright room, the smell of antiseptics in her nose. Rae HATED hospitals, and had been about to leap from the table when Alex spoke. Alex... everything came flooding back to her, and she laid back down on the pillows. "Damn," she thought "So much for a good first impression. I go and get my a** kicked. I hope I wasn't drooling..."
At Alex's mention of magic, Rae did a quick mental overview of her body. There was a dull ache in her shin, and her jaw throbbed where she had been kicked, but both pains were receding, and otherwise, she'd never felt better. Rae took Alex's hand and tried not to react to the electric current feeling that heated up her body she got when he touched her. Alex helped her to her feet and made sure she wasn't going to fall over. Rae waved him off and motioned for him to continue. When she did, she felt a slight tug on her mind, and thought she heard the words "She would make a good...." and thought "I'd make a good what?!" before she gave her head a good shake. Carapace must have kicked her harder than she thought.
Rae took off after Alex and followed him through the building to Alaric's office. She took a deep breath and trailed after him into the large room. Rae was determined not to hang her head in shame. She had done a good job, but she knew she would have been another victim had Alex not been there to save her. That thought seemed to stick in her mind, though she tried hard to shake it. At least that meant she hadn't offended him badly enough for him to just let her die. They would be excellent partners after all, and Rae resolved to work harder to make sure something like this never happened again.
======
Alaric watched as the two entered the room, a blank expression on his face, his fingers steepled in front of him. He had started to notice a pattern that he hoped would continue. It was always Alex who entered the room first, with Rae just behind. While Alaric agreed women had their uses, this mission had done nothing but prove to him that women were not yet equal to men in this field, nor were humans equal to vampires. Rae lost on both fronts.
He had hoped that Rae would prove better than most humans - and she had, but had still nearly been killed and would have placed Alexander in danger had there been another vamp (or five) in the area. Alaric sighed, and began speaking. Carapace is dead. And if it weren't for that single fact, you'd both be out on your asses right now." Alaric pinched the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger. "That was the most sloppy piece of work I've ever seen. Rae, you're lucky to be alive. If it wasn't for Alex, you would have been just another victim. I can't believe the stupidity I witnessed. Taking on a vampire by yourself. You got lucky once, Rae, you got lucky once. But that's all it was, luck. You were up against an inexperienced vampire, and I had hoped you would recognize that this scenario was different. I was wrong. Not only did you almost get yourself killed, but you put Alexander in danger as well. Had Carapace had accomplices around to aid him, you would have gotten Alexander killed as well."
Alaric shifted his gaze to his grandson, his gaze softening slightly. "And you, Alexander. You should know better. You've been doing this much longer. You take point on vampire cases. And the next time you sense Rae is even in the slightest bit of danger, you step in right away. I will not tolerate this happening again. You are dismissed for the evening." Alaric turned to the paperwork on his desk and began signing documents, a clear sign of dismissal.

Alex smiled at Rae and nuzzled her neck a little bit. He sighed and said, "That was our first mission... three years ago. I was surprised by the amount of potential you displayed. I know I made the right choice." He licked her neck a little and nipped at her gently. He smiled at her and asked, "Well, that was when we first met... do you want to see when you first found out I was a vampire? That was when you saved my a**." He got a little bit closer to her and got a little more comfortable, making sure that Rae wasn't uncomfortable while he did so. Sighing, he smiled at Rae, and continued, "I'm sure you remember it, the first time you encountered a Krusnik? She was killing our vampire agents mercilessly, and leaving a trail of blood behind her wherever she went... only to disappear when we got close. Alaric finally got fed up with playing cat and mouse and sent the two of us to deal with her. I'm actually surprised it took you so long to notice I was a vampire. Then again, if you had noticed right away, we probably wouldn't be where we are right now." He bit down on her neck gently, drinking her blood slowly, but not too greedily. He loved the way she tasted, so exquisite, so delicious, he would be happy if he had nothing else to drink other than her for an eternity.

Rae snuggled against him and laughed. "I didn't think Alaric would ever call me back. I didn't even think you'd want to be my partner anymore after that chewing out." She smiled as Alex nipped at her, enjoying the way his teeth felt against her skin. She was having trouble focusing on what he was saying, concentrating on willing him to bite her. As his words finally sunk in, Rae shifted slightly to allow him better access to her throat while still being pressed against him.
"I think I knew all along. Well, not that you were a vampire, but that there was something different about you. Or, maybe I did know, and had just had so many bad experiences with vampires, I didn't want you to be one. Although I should have realized you could never be bad." She sighed happily as he drank from her, her body emanating that familiar heat Alex always brought forth in her. "There's no where else I'd rather be, then here with you, right now, for eternity." Rae smiled as the scene above them unfolded.
=====================================================
Rae trudged up to the Organization building, grumbling the entire way. "After nine months, you'd think I should be used to three am wake up calls. I guess that's what happens when you go after supernaturals that only come out at night." As the elevator dinged, Alex stood from the chair he had been waiting in and waved her over. Rae couldn't help it, she smiled at him. Alex always looked so put together in his signature outfit, and he never seemed tired or grumpy this early. When she'd first started here, Rae had been certain they were going to try and make her wear one. Thankfully, she soon found out that was just Alex's way, and somehow made him even more enduring.
Rae sighed and took her customary deep breath before going in to face Alaric. Ever since that first mission, Alaric made her uneasy, although she'd never let him know it. "Glad to see you two finally made it."Alaric said, with a look that suggested he knew Alex had been waiting on her arrival. Rae folded her arms across her chest and continued to stare pointedly at Alaric, who cleared his throat before continuing. "As you both know, many of our vampiric employees have been murdered of late. It seems like a Krusnik is to blame. Rachelle, you have never come up against a Krusnik before, as they are very rare indeed. A Krusnik is a vampire that feeds on other vampires. A disgusting creature, searching for more power and strength, Unfortunately, Krusnik's absorb a vampires power from the blood they drink, so they succeed. This is an extremely dangerous case, but you two are my best agents, and my last hope of stopping this Krusnik. Kill her, and come back. Alive."
Alaric motioned for one of his goons to go over the information they had gathered on the Krusnik, and Rae took mental notes. Two hours later, when they were finally released, the two made their way to the rendez-vous point. "So, Alaric really thinks we're his best agents, huh?" Rae asked, smiling up at Alex. He was just so damned tall. Something that made Rae like him even more.

Alex chuckled at her comment, after nine months of working with her, Alex had taken quite a liking to Rae. He liked everything about her, her way of speaking, her sense of humor, the way she carried herself. He was glad she was his partner. He smiled and said, "Apparently we are, a bit different from what he said after our first assignment, I thought I'd never hear the end of that one. So we're going after a Krusnik... this should be interesting." Alex continued to smile, but he was slightly worried, Rae still didn't know he was a vampire, one slip up and their partnership, their friendship, it could all end just as quickly as it started. Walking back to the elevator, Alex sighed and checked his pistols, which were holstered inside his jacket. He'd gotten accustomed to wearing the holsters for his pistols, as not being able to conjure them in front of Rae made it necessary. When they arrived at the garage level, Alex looked at Rae and said, seriously, "Well, I've gone up against a few Krusniks... but not one that's at this level of strength. She's killed ten of our vampire colleagues, and taken their strength... Rae, be careful, this Krusnik could probably kill the both of us easily." He turned away before she could see the lie in his eyes, it was true the Krusnik could kill Rae easily, the same was not true for Alex.
=====
Alex looked up at the building, it was old and decrepit, ugly and worn to the point of collapsing. A condemned building was the perfect hiding spot for a Krusnik, it was the last place anyone would expect a creature focused on beauty and power would hide. He walked forward to the door, turned the doorknob, only to find it was locked. "Vampiric powers would really come in handy right about now." Alex sighed and figured there was no way around it, so he just kicked the door in, the rusty hinges breaking off as though they weren't even attached at all. The door fell inwards with a loud crash, and Alex said to Rae, who was right behind him, "So much for the element of surprise... let's go." Moving inside, Alex noted the few cowering homeless vagrants in the corners. He took out his pistols and moved further into the condemned building. The civilians might make things difficult if the Krusnik wanted to take hostages. Sighing as he and Rae swept the first floor, finding nothing, not even a single hair out of place. The Krusnik was not on the first floor, it was likely that she would be on one of the upper floors. Alex turned to Rae and said, "Keep alert, she could be hiding anywhere in this place. Let's take the next floor slowly."
The next three floors proved uneventful, there was nothing except more homeless people, drug addicts, and stray, feral animals. As they approached the stairs leading up to the top floor, Alex smelled something, it was delicious, more delicious than anything he had ever smelled before, a clear counterpoint to the rest of the dingy building. He raised a hand, motioning for Rae to stop, and whispered, "She's here somewhere, probably just above us." Alex moved up the stairs slowly, doing his best to make little to no noise. Reaching the top of the stairs, Alex looked around for any contact, there was not a single soul around. There was however, a single wooden door, that stood out from the rest of the building. I was a perfectly crafted wooden door, ordinary to look at, but on closer inspection it was obviously expensive, decorative, and looked like it belonged in an expensive apartment. Alex knew the signs when he saw them; this was where the Krusnik was hiding. He moved to the door, turned the knob, it was unlocked, and slowly opened it, the hinges not making a sound. If it was one thing Krusniks were known for, it was their obsession with beauty and perfection.
Alex looked around at the room, it was a clear counterpoint to the rest of the building; the Krusnik had turned the apartment into a fancy suite, there was not a single spot that was less than beautiful. They had found the hideout. Alex scanned the room, looking for anything, and his eyes locked on a door when it opened. A beautiful woman walked out, clad in a silk black dress, with a very revealing neckline and it showed off the Krusnik's hourglass figure. If Alex wasn't a vampire, she would have been irresistible. He, however, was a vampire and the Krusnik stopped, staring at the pair, looking the both of them over, unsurprised. She looked Rae over at a glance, not very impressed with her, but she lingered on Alex for a long time. Smiling she said, in a low, sultry, and tempting tone, "Mmmmm... the organization has sent more of its people after me... and what a pair... you, girl, aren't perfect, but you're human, what would you know of perfect? Your partner however... mmmmm... he looks... and smells so... delicious..." Before Alex could even say anything, the Krusnik charged him and tackled him to the ground, biting his neck violently, cutting his jugular vein and spilling Alex's blood all over the lush red carpet.
She drank his blood greedily, as though she had never tasted anything so amazingly delicious in her entire life. Alex could do nothing as he had him pinned to the ground, and her bite caused him to involuntarily relax. He managed to look at Rae with an expression of surprise, but only slight worry, as though the fact that he just had his neck torn open was the least of his worries. It was the least of his worries, in attacking him, the Krusnik had exposed Alex for what he was, a vampire. He wasn't sure what would happen next, what would Rae do, what would she say, would she try and kill the both of them; Alex had no idea. He just stared up into the emerald green eyes he had come so accustomed to seeing, and smiled lightly, his fangs now showing at their normal length. He mouthed two words to her, still smiling, "I'm sorry," and waited for what was going to happen next.

Rae stood frozen just inside the doorway, emerald green eyes wide. The Krusnik woman was gorgeous. More than that, she was mesmerizing. Rae had never been one to notice women, but she was stunning, and had an allure Rae couldn't ignore. She snapped out of her trance like stare when the woman spoke. her voice was like nothing Rae had ever heard before, it instantly soothed her, the Krusnik's words breaking over her like gentle waves. "I have to stay in control..." Rae thought just as the actual meaning of her words struck home.
"But she shouldn't be interested in Alex either." Rae thought, completely killing the woman's hold over her. "He's -" Rae's gasp was drowned out by the crash of the Krusnik woman falling on top of Alex, the terrible gnashing sound her jaws made as she clamped onto his throat. Blood pooled beneath him as the Krusnik drank. Rae was frozen in shock. "Alex is a vampire. Alex is a vampire." Rae's mind was fixated on that one thought, repeating it and looping it over and over and over again. He was one of the very creatures they'd been fighting, one of the creatures that got her involved in this whole mess, one of the creatures she hated...
Rae stared in horror as the woman continued to drink from Alex, his own set of fangs sliding out over his lips as he smiled at her. Rae's gut froze as she struggled to breathe. Alex was a vampire. But more than that, he was a vampire she had been alone with numerous times, and still she lived. Alex was a vampire she worked with, to rid the city from evil vampires. He was a vampire who had saved her life, on more than one occasion, certainly not hell bent on sucking her dry. Alex was a vampire, and he was going to die. Rae's mind focused on that last thought, and everything became crystal clear.
The Krusnik woman's attention was totally focused on feeding from Alex, her moans of delight making Rae want to puke. As Alex mouthed "I''m sorry." Rae jumped into action, pulling her switch blade she had strapped to her thigh from her pocket and flicking the blade open. She glanced around the room, looking for something to stake the Krunik with. Her eyes lit on the polished, dark mahogany coat rack hung on the wall behind the currently feasting woman. She skittered around them, being careful not to touch the Krusnik or more to quickly and alert her to Rae's plan, although Rae was pretty sure the woman was closer to orgasm than she would be to noticing the "imperfect human" moving around the room.
Rae snapped off one of the empty coat hooks and moved it around in her palm until the pointy edge was facing downward. "Hey, that's my partner, b***h." Rae said, causing the woman to finally look up from Alex's throat. She had turned slightly, giving Rae perfect access to stake her through the heart. "No one hurts him and gets away with it." She said and used her switchblade to slice the Krusnik's throat as she fell off of Alex. Rae continued to hack away at the woman until her head was severed from her shoulders. By this point, Rae was panting hard, her heart racing as she stood and wiped flecks of the Krusnik's blood from her face, leaving smears of red on her cheeks. Rae looked to Alex to make sure he was still alive but said nothing.

Alex watched as Rae leaped into action, losing sight of her as she moved from his vision. He wasn't quite aware of what was going on, his mind was going blank. This must have been how the Krusnik managed to kill so many, her bite contained sedatives or at least some chemical that could disable a vampire. He heard Rae running around the room, butt couldn't see what she was doing, the edges of his vision were going dark. It wouldn't be long before Alex passed out and t the rate he was losing blood, he might not get back up. He heard what Rae said, but it was distant, muffled. He was vaguely aware of Rae attacking the Krusnik, and pushed the body off of him when he felt her head hit the floor. He looked to Rae, his eyes half lidded and his vision darkening, he smiled at her and pressed a hand to his neck, closing the wound with magic. He managed to find his voice, only for a few moments, and said, hoarsely, and whisper quiet, "I'm sorry for not... telling you." He relaxed, his head hit the carpet and his eyes closed, he passed out. Alex would be fine, his body just needed time to recuperate, but moving him very far would be a bad idea.

"Alex. Alex!" Rae called as his eyelids closed, her hands fluttering over him uselessly. She was panicking, but it was a stroke of - well, not luck, but, fate? - that she had found out Alex was a vampire not moments before, otherwise she'd be a sobbing mess. Vampires don't have heartbeats, but if Rae had thought Alex was human, he'd be dead. More dead. Not undead.
Rae shook her head to clear her jumbled thoughts and choked back a laugh at how useless she was. She had absolutely no idea what to do in this situation, how to check if he was alright, how to make sure he was comfortable. He could be dying - again - and she'd have no idea. She couldn't check his pulse, couldn't listen for a heartbeat or watch to make sure his chest was raising and falling. Rae took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down and think.
Another few deep breaths and it came to her. "My cell phone." she thought stupidly, scrambling for the small phone she kept in her back pocket for emergencies. She'd been offended at first, when the Organization offered to buy her one, but she couldn't deny the practicality of it, and right now, she was glad she hadn't refused. Rae hit the speed dial button for Alaric's office, surprised when he answered himself. Rae quickly explained what had happened and told him about Alex's current condition.
"I could send a team to pick him up and teleport him back here, but moving him won't make a difference. May just make things take longer. He'll be fine, just stay with him and make sure there are no other threats in the building. Stay there, and when he wakes up, have him teleport you both back here. I'll want a full report from Alexander when you return."
And with that, Alaric hung up. Rae looked at her phone for a few seconds, bewildered, before sliding the phone back into her pocket. There was nothing left for Rae to do but wait. She moved over to Alex and moved his head into her lap. "I'm here, Alex." she said, more to reassure herself than him. "I'll be here until you wake up. You just take your time and get better. I'll be right here." Rae took another deep breath and settled in to wait for his eyes to open.

Alex laid on the carpet, passed out with a slight smile on his face. He vaguely heard Rae speaking, but he couldn't make out more than a few syllables. He wondered what would happen next, now that she knew he was a vampire. He wouldn't blame her if she hated him for not telling her and would understand if she didn't want to be his partner anymore. He had enjoyed their time together, he actually looked forward to his job, even if he was killing his own kin most of the time. She was special, that was for sure, she made him smile whenever he saw her. He thought of the many jobs they had done together and how well they worked together. He wondered why he was so hung up on her, she was just a human. He quickly pushed that train of thought aside, Rae wasn't just a human, she was his partner, his friend, someone he could trust to watch his back.
The exhausted feeling and blood loss passed and Alex began to wake up, he opened his eyes slowly, expecting to see just a ceiling or a light fixture. Instead he saw Rae sitting over him, not poised to strike, but looking at him worriedly, he smiled and slowly sat up. He looked around, the body of the Krusnik laying a few feet away and the head missing. He brought his hand up to his head and wiped the blood from his forehead, he felt something wet on his cheeks, bringing a finger to wipe whatever it was away, he realized he had been crying. He wiped the rest of the tears of blood away and looked at Rae, smiling hesitantly, making sure not to show his fangs or make any sudden moves. He was glad she had been worried and that she hadn't killed him while he was unconscious, but he didn't want to push her further than she was comfortable with. He continued smiling and said, slightly hoarsely, "Thanks... I... well... Now you know, I guess. I won't blame you if you don't... want to be my partner anymore..." Alex sighed and a tear of blood rolled down his cheek. He laughed lightly, more of a forced chuckle and thought, "Why... why did that hurt so much? It... it shouldn't have hurt me that much to say that..." He chuckled again and stood up, staring at nothing in particular, brushing himself off and wiping the blood from his face again, he didn't turn back to Rae, he wasn't sure he could face her at this point.

Rae had been starting to worry when she noticed Alex's eyelids flutter. She held her breath, trying not to get her hopes up and praying it wasn't just a trick of the light, when they moved again. She let out the breath she had been holding in a big whoosh of air. Rae sat still, closing her eyes and silently thanking whatever was "up there" that Alex lived, or didn't, or whatever it was he did.
Rae stayed still as he stood, she too being careful as if any sudden movement might startle him as he moved away from her. She stood when he turned his back. Rae had been so relieved that he'd woken up that she hadn't noticed the bloody tears on his face until just now. She held out a hand to him, but withdrew her hand, unsure of how to help him when he spoke aloud. Rae had been about to speak when a light touch skittered across her mind. "Why... why did that hurt so much? It... it shouldn't have hurt me that much to say that..."Rae started, sure Alex hadn't spoken aloud, her eyebrows knitted together as she concentrated. "Was that....Alex? But it couldn't have been. He didn't say anything out loud...." Rae shook her head and sucked in a deep breath at his chuckle.
"Alex, I....I'll always want to be your partner. You're the only one I trust to....look out for me." It was Rae's turn to look down, away from her partner. Rae didn't trust people. It was a rule of hers. If you trust someone, you're only giving them the ability to let you down, to hurt you and leave you. But Rae couldn't doubt herself anymore. She trusted Alex with her life, and more than that, she trusted him with more than she'd ever trusted anyone. If she were being completely honest, he was probably the truest friend she had. Rae took a deep breath and swallowed her insecurities as she continued. "You're the best partner I've ever had. I trust you more than anyone. The stuff I said about vampires before..." Rae waved a hand, "I thought vampires were all the same. Killing people at will, stealing, raping....but now I know they're not all like that. That you are not like that. You've shown me some vampires can be good. Can choose to be good."
Rae continued to hang her head, not trusting herself to look up for fear her tears would over flow. "I'm sorry, Alex."

Alex sighed and his hands unconsciously tightened their grip on Rae. He smiled at her and said, "I really thought that was going to be it for us. I didn't think we'd wind up this close." Alex kissed Rae and looked her over, to him, she was the essence of perfection, no one could compare to her. He leaned over her neck and bit down gently, drawing blood. As he drank from her, Alex sent a message to her over their mind link, saying, "We should probably get some sleep. The sun's coming up and Alaric will probably have another assignment for us later. We can train your powers some more when we wake up." Alex released his jaws from her neck, licking his lips he leaned into another kiss. He was happier than he had ever been, and an eternity of this happiness stretched out before him, which made him even happier. He sighed happily as his eyes slowly closed, the last think he saw before falling asleep was the sparkling emerald eyes in front of him. He smiled lightly as he slept, his fangs descending over his lip.
Alex's eyes slowly fluttered open. Seeing the sleeping body of Rae laying next to him made him smile. He stifled a yawn with his hand and blinked to clear his vision a bit. He decided he'd try and wake Rae up like she did him. He leaned over and gently licked her neck before biting into it, obtaining more of her amazing blood. He sighed and continued to drain her for a few moments before releasing his jaws from her throat and saying, quietly, "Time to wake up, Rae. The sun is down and it's going to be a beautiful night." Alex smiled once more, waiting for Rae's reply before doing anything else.
