The man regarded the dragons for a moment, looking from one to the other and finally turning and staring at Thanos through narrowed eyes, his smile gone and a sense of unease about him.

"So many questions..." he said softly, "But I am certainly... no friend of dragons!"

And he moved, as fast as the wind itself it seemed, and crossed the distance between him and Padar, catching up the staff as he did so and swinging it with both hands towards the dragon's throat.

Time froze. The white-haired man relaxed, laughing, and turned to Thanos. The wind had stopped. The clouds no longer moved across the sky. Even the light seemed... off... too bright in this sudden world of silence that had enveloped the small group. Time had literally suspended itself and the dragons were frozen in place like statues. Only the man and Thanos were able to move.

"That's better. Now, when time starts moving again - when I deem it to - the Dragon-Knight will surely be enraged at my blow. It's already in motion. You can't stop it. We'll fight. One of us will die. But first, little Thanos, I want to hear your judgment. You know things you shouldn't... and such a feat requires a different perspective. So come. What questions would you ask of me before you decide who is responsible for your sire?"

A deep and low rumble came from Astalder's throat as the man suddenly turned hostile towards the Knight. He shot a quick glance towards Thanos to make sure he was still there while crouching down to prepare for whatever would come.

Blade had seen it too and had just placed a hand onto the hilt of his sword before he and the dragon froze with time.

Thanos jumped as the man approached the knight and lashed out so rapidly. When time froze, the dragonet looked around in confusion, noting the dragon's lack of reaction, then that everything was totally, abnormally still. When the human - "Is he really human?" Thanos wondered briefly - asked if he had questions, he thought for a moment, hurrying his thoughts into line lest the man grow impatient.

"If you didn't attack my father...then why didn't you just say so? And how do you know so much about his injury...his impending death?" Thanos asked. "And you hate us dragons so much...you've got me more or less trapped, yet you're not trying to kill me. What are you trying to do?"

The man grinned at Thanos's questions and dropped into a lazy crouch, resting his arms on his knees.

"Let's see... first off, I assure you I am not an enemy of dragons. I lied. Sometimes I have to do that to accomplish my goals. Sometimes I have to take risks. And while I did not attack your father, I did cause his fall. He could have saved himself, had I not intervened. I could save him even now, if I chose to do so. But the ends I am aiming for outweigh the means right now. Do you think his blood is on my hands, because I changed the outcome of one dragon's life? Or because I sit here and do nothing to help?"

"Could you sit idly by and let atrocity after atrocity pass by when you only need reach out your hand to stop it, for the sake of a future those you could save will never see?"

Thanos was confused. If the man had caused his father's fall, and stopped him from saving himself, how was that not an attack. "What does he mean, the blood's not on his hands, for my father's death?" the dragonet thought. "No," a different tone of his own mental voice responded, "The man is right - he averted many cruelties, by bringing down Father." Torn by the two opposing lines of thought, Thanos looked at the man before him - and, briefly, saw his father, roaring in triumph over the bodies of three small human children, as a village burned behind him.

"You...you didn't do it out of hate," Thanos realized aloud. "You did it...to stop the flood of tragedy." The dragonet struggled to accommodate this knowledge, that his father's killer was..."Not a murderer, but...a savior?" he mused softly.

The man muttered something under his breath, in a completely foreign language. Then he stood, turning his back to Thanos and walking over to where Blade and Astalder were standing, frozen in time.

"Morality," he said, "Is a very tricky thing. If you had the power to stop something bad, would you take the chance whenever it presented itself to do so? Don't answer that. We'll see for ourselves soon enough. When time resumes we'll be in the same spots we were in when I stopped it. I'll still be in mid-swing at a dragon, aiming to crush the throat which is a fatal blow. The Dragon-Knight will move to protect him and those around him and I'll be mortally wounded. Or at least..."

The man grew very still, one hand on Blade's chest. After a moment a faint blue outline appeared around the man's body and the stranger stepped back, drawing the blue light with him. It hovered between the two, a ghostly imprint of what seemed to be a sleeping Blade.

"The dragon will kill my body," the man whispered, "And I won't be there."

There was a blurring of light around the two and after a breath there were two ghostly outlines. One of them moved and gently shoved Blade towards the white-haired human. The forms vanished and the white-haired human seemed frozen in time now, while Blade's body was freed and his eyes roamed up and down, examining his hands and arms.

"Not bad," Blade said, a strange little smirk over his lips, "It's amazing the things you can do once you realize souls aren't tied down as firmly as you would think they are. Blade's soul is now residing in there," he said, indicating the white-haired human, "and will be there when that body dies. I, on the other hand, will be right here all along. And the only people who will know will be me, you, and Blade... for however many minutes he manages to buy."

"Thanos, you are now privy to information that could stop a tragedy. Are you capable of standing by and letting it happen?"

Thanos stared for a moment, first in awe - the man had actually swapped bodies with another human - and then in horror. He actually intended to sacrifice the other's soul, in order to prolong his own life. That could not be right. "And what about Astalder - losing his friend?" the dragonet thought. "Wait - no, it's not personal connections that determine what is right. But, even so...can I let this happen?"

Thanos' head felt like it was spinning, but he knew he had to decide quickly. "Is there some greater good?" he hastily questioned himself. "No," he spoke aloud. "This is not like...like stepping in with an ending, to stop the cruelty my father wrought. What you're doing..." he paused, casting a brief but probing glance at the now-frozen white-haired figure, "He's not like my sire. You...no, it's up to me. I have to try and stop this true tragedy...you're causing it only for your own benefit. All right...I'll tell them what you've done. I'll stop this!"

Blade closed his eyes for a moment and the time-stilled world seemed oppressive in its silence. The man had a peculiar look to his face, like he was looking at something with great concentration. Then he opened his eyes and the moment was gone.

"We'll see," he said and time resumed.

The white-haired man, now Blade, was already in mid-swing when time stopped. The blow was already committed and all the laws of physics demanded that the staff go where it was aimed.

No matter the reason, Padar was briefly relieved that the wind had shifted. His bound confirmed the others were not still struggling behind them, but neither knight relaxed, not fully buying the mysterious man's words about the unusual wind. He still remained, overall, a mystery.

When Astalder brought the little bundle of Fallen wings forward, the dragon knight moved closer to where it was plopped down on the ground. Padar meant to interject at some point on behalf of the infirmary elder. That was before the human moved at a speed incomprehensible, charging straight toward him...

It was only a last second instinct, one to drop to his knees and lower his head that kept the strike from hitting its intended target. Without being able to dodge, Padar's helm took the hit, barely missing a direct strike to the eye, the speed of staff actually indenting the helmet itself.

Immediately there was wordless fury on ground. The Knight lept forward in attempts to knock over the now close range attacker. His Knight-bound made two swift hits into the saddle's side to unclip himself before leaping from dragonback in the white-haired one's direction.

((ooc AFK-note: I'm off for now - fiance and I are going to watch Babylon 5 in a little bit, and I would like this to please not move too fast while I'm away))

"Wait!" Thanos cried, as loud as he could. "Don't kill that white-haired man...that's not him, in that body! It sounds ridiculous...but stop!" Thanos cried urgently. He paused for only a second to see if his words had registered at all, before lurching on with his explanation. "Something strange happened. You all - you were frozen, it was only the man and I that could move. He told me that souls weren't as firmly latched as they seemed, he took over Blade's body and put Blade's soul in that white-haired one. So if you kill the white-haired human...you're killing Blade, Astalder's friend!"

The next thing he knew, Blade found himself in a completely different perspective; literally in the shoes of the one attacking Padar. Feeling the impact of the staff bouncing off of the dragon-knight's helm, he staggered back, disoriented from the sudden swap.

Eyes widened, the now-white haired man just tried to take evasive maneuvers so he could figure out what had just happened exactly.. aside from the apparent fact that he had swapped places with the other human. He was unable to avoid getting knocked over by the dragon, being so close and mentally unprepared. So with a grunt, he hit the ground before rolling away from the duo in general.

Once he was back onto his feet, he glanced over at Astalder, who had... Blade on his back. Or at least what looked like Blade. It was an odd sight to see in any case. Then, hearing Thanos speak up, he shot a glance at him. It seemed the Fallen knew what was going on, but who was going to believe him?

Astalder growled at what appeared to be the white-haired man, then looked over at Thanos. As far as he was concerned, his bonded had not gone anywhere.

"That's quite a story Thanos... but I don't really sense anything like that.."

Well that kinda explains why Blade's attempts to speak with the dragon mentally have been to no avail. At least, it seemed that way. But that aside, he had a bigger problem at hand... such has having an angry dragon and his bond wanting to kill him now.

Glancing down at the staff in his hands, he grimaced before holding it up, ready to retaliate. He wasn't too familiar with using a staff, but he couldn't be too choosy about his arms at the moment.

Thanos forced his mind to race, searching for anything that might help. He remembered something his mother had once told him..."Humans are more than just flight tools," she had said. "We feel them, Thanos. That's why we should care." At first, the dragonet had no idea why this had popped up, but then he understood. "I don't think you would feel it, Astalder," he replied quickly. "Because Blade hasn't died. If his spirit is still here, I doubt you'd perceive it leaving him. But look. Look for Blade's spirit, look through its eyes! Then you should see, that the one on your back is no longer Blade!"

As soon as the knight-bound landed his hand was reaching for his sword hilt, drawing as he began to run forward with shield raised in the white-haired one's direction. Serious his face was as he ran, blade shining in what light flitted between the bare and needled trees, light reflecting from the shield that could be blinding if caught at the wrong angle.

'Astalder, get the little one back to Gen'yiel now!' Padar ordered to step in. What the small Fallen was saying he did not know, but he needed to be out of harm's way. There was no way to predict how this battle would go and he did not need the little one caught in the crossfire or be the object of the white-haired one's attack. His father was the first brought down after all.

Padar then spun with a roar to face where the white haired one had rolled to, giving his bound the lead attack as he ran toward their target's side, looking as if he was going to simply charge straight over the area the white-haired man stood.

((ooc: Sorry about that placeholder this is the hopefully-first and definitely-last time))

"No!" Thanos screamed, as the Dragon-Knight, paying no heed to his warning, sought to attack the body in which Blade's soul had been placed. The dragonet reached into his memory and "grabbed" a short portion of the period of frozen time - the part where the man had switched bodies with Blade - and "thrust" it at the enraged dragon. He wasn't at all sure whether his ability to see into others' minds worked in reverse - whether the vision would go through, but he pushed the image with all his might. At the same time, caught up in his fervor to the point that his own well-being was forgotten, Thanos rushed at the Dragon-Knight as fast as he could, in the hopes that he could prevent this unjust death.
