-----------------------------
This disscussion topic often comes up and it makes me wanna cry, because of my fricking braces I suffer every other day if I choose to play sax. They taunt and poke fun for I just cant stand being back there and getting this...this...treatment! I am gonna tottaly yell at them tommarrow! I will bring my sax and play! play with such majisty and grace and If they have a damn thing to say I will shove thier fricking sax right up thier asshat a**! >_< I hate asshats and with thier essance upon them, Im prolly won't do what I stated above....-_-

I'm thinking of what Sarah said... I never had any problems with braces and playing when I had them. But then, i'm a clarinettist, not an oboeist. The only thing I would say is, when I got the wires changed I always took a day or two without practising, coz it hurt when the wires were changed. Other than that, it was never a problem for me. that love is watching someone die...

yeah playing flute+braces=pain for about a month, through my whole freshman year my lips were in pain because of the way you form your mouth to play the flute, then after a while of having braces dig into lips, the callouses came so it no longer hurts that much.

ive had my braces for2 1/2 yrs and when i first got them it wasnt that hard to play the clarinet. my friend plays the trumpet and she was awsome andone of the best before she got her braces. it really does depend on what instruament you play cause it could effect every one differently. even with braces im one of the better clarinet players in my school

Well, I had my braces for 3 years and I played the sax for 1 1/2 of those years and it SUCKED at first. I got used to it afterwards, and I learned that having braces actually helped me keep my grip on the mouthpiece better...the downside was that I would have cuts and indentations in my mouth after playing for a long time.
I just got my braces off about...4~5 months ago and my playing has improved by so much.
You just have to adapt.

I had braces in the 7th grade and I play flute. It wasn't too very hard for me except when I got my retainers instead because they took a lot more extra room inside my mouth. For the oboe though, it might be a different story. I would check with your director or your instructor to see what their advice is.

Well, yeah, it depends on the instrament AND how you play. Me playing tuba, if I played the tuba normally, then I would have a problem (brass instraments buzz in their mouthpieces, which would mess with braces in my opinon) Since I play with my tongue in the mouthpiece, it doesn't affect me. I dunno about woodwinds though

For clarinet (the mouthpiece of which is more or less vertical), the braces tend to cut into your lower lip... it's not that bad, and eventually you sort of develop 'callouses'.
For sax it doesn't really matter because the mouthpiece is more horizontal and it doesn't even touch where your braces are.

They're painful for a while, but you get used to them. I kind of hate my friend though. We both play trombone and he recently got his braces on. He complains way more than he needs to. I wish to punch him in the face.

It all depends actually. You don't play as good as you did, but if you work on it, you should catch up. I got my braces on about 3 years ago and I should be getting them off soon, but I play flute and it doesn't mess moi up as much as it would if I played a reed or brass instrument.

Well, good luck. For the first week or so.
See, i've played the alto sax for a year. Just getting use to it. Then, i get braces. (i've had them for 3 months now) and JUST GREAT i can't play anymore. To make it worst, 3 weeks later i had band camp..>.<
You'll slowly get use to wrapping your lips over your braces, and that might hurt if your jaw is small. Oh and, try not to cut your reed with your braces. I've wasted 3 reeds already. !!!
Good luck with braces! You'll get use to them in a while biggrin
