Future Friends
[IM RP with Arana Kamina]

Ronan: -shifting through his contacts late in the afternoon when he comes across Anita's number- -reminded about their conversation last summer for a moment until he realizes with a jolt that one of the main topics, him capturing a soul, had now been achived- -hesistates for a moment, thinking, then dials her number- -a message to let her know about his sucess wouldn't hurt-

It took a few rings, but before the voicemail picked up Anita answered.

Anita: "Hey, Ronan! What's up?"

Ronan: -caught of guard for a moment, having expected to just leave a message, but recovers- "Hey! I hope this isn't interupting anything, but I thought you'd like to know that I've finally caught a soul for the lab."

Anita: -laughs- "Nah, not at a-- really." -keeps her voice calm but genuinely interested- "Are you gonna give me the full story?"

Ronan: "Well... do you remember seeing anything in the news last week about a flying fox escape?"

Anita: "Oh-- Mm... No, I can't say I do. I haven't really been paying attention to the news lately. Is that what you caught?"

Ronan: "Yeah." -goes silent for a moment- "There was a new keeper at the aquarium and they accidentally let it out. I was able to find it with the help of a raevan named Cesc, but we were too late unfortunately. I'm just glad I had the soul bottle in my bag."

Anita: -stays quiet while Ronan explains- -clicks her tongue a few times, repeating the name- "Don't know them... I'm sorry to hear that, though. At least, this way, it'll get another chance at things. Did you already give the bottle back?"

Ronan: "This Sunday. I admit it almost feels kind of weird to have it done now."

Anita: "It's good to have it done, though. Better to get it out of the way quickly. I kinda let mine hang around a while and it gave me weird vibes and dreams. Thought I heard it talking once." -scoffs- "So, how do you feel about it? Knowing you're gonna have a, uh-- s**t, what was your essence again? Bark? A barkbat."

Ronan: "Barkbat?" -small laugh at the nickname- "Well, main thing is I just hope the raevan's happy. Though I might have to hide all the fruit in the house."

Anita: "Yeah, you know, kissycroc, barkbat." -chuckles- "Naahh, I don't think it'll be a problem." -pauses- "Maybe. I mean, when I was waiting for Cruz I thought he was gonna chow down on mistletoe and he might starve 'cause there's none around here, that'd be an expensive ordered diet, but-- I'unno, they might just eat tree stuff. What did your essence do, again?"

Ronan: "It... bled." -another pause- "I really hope they eat tree stuff. No thank you to blood bank trips."

Anita: "Oh." -stifles a giggle- "Vampire fruit bat. That'd be awful-- Oh! Speaking of Lab stuff, do you remember Duncan?"

Ronan: -rueful laugh- "Oh so much. And vaguely. I know he helped me out last summer. Why do you ask?"

Anita: "Yeah. Well, he asked me and a couple of other people to help him set something up at Lab. Have you heard anything about a crawfish boil this month?"

Ronan: "I actually haven't! Do you know when exactly it's going to be?"

Anita: "Ah, damn. I had a feeling some of the invites might get lost. It's slotted for the 15th, that evening. Think you can make it?"

Ronan: "It's a weekend, so definitely! Would it be alright if I brought a family member with me?"

Anita: "Sure! The more the merrier. It's kind of like a potluck, too, so if you've got stuff to bring, feel free."

Ronan: "Potluck? I'll see what I can bring." -quick moment of writing stuff down, followed by a moment of silence- "I just... really hope when the raevan comes along that they can find some good friends."

Anita: "Mhm! ...Ah. Yeah. You worried?"

Ronan: "A little bit. I've seen how hard it can be and just... there's only so much you can do as a guardian, you know?"

Anita: -gives a slight pause- "It'll be okay. At the very least, I can assure you Cruz'll definitely be their friend. I mean-- he's had a few rough instances with some of the other raevans, but that hasn't put him off them. I can't imagine them not being civil, if nothing else."

Ronan: "Either way, it won't hurt for them to meet. Do you know of anyone else that might work out?"

Anita: "Let's see... Ethiriel's very nice. She's a calm sort, though, and her guardian's generally busy. Zul's fantastic, I'm sure he'd be very patient with anyone. Um... Cruz is friends with a few, but you know-- I haven't met as many of the raevans as I'd like! There's such a big list, and it keeps growing. I'm sure there'll be plenty of friends."

Ronan: "Zul..." -a somewhat unpleasant memory from the jungle comes up with that name, but luckily it's replaced with a better one- "Oh! Alex's raevan, right? She showed me the ropes to lab and I've been wanting to meet him for awhile. And Ethiriel... how do you spell that?"

Anita: -didn't notice any change in Ronan's tone, figuring he was just repeating for the sake of notation- "Um--" -pauses, followed by the soft patter of bare feet on wood floor, a drawer opening and some papers rustling- "Ah. E-T-H-I-R-I-E-L. Not like the word ethereal but pronounced the same."

Ronan: "Alright, got it." -small sound of a pen being unclicked- "See you around on Saturday then? And hopefully I'll soon have raevan in tow for future get togethers."

Anita: -laughs- "Hopefully! Really can't wait to meet 'em, and whoever you're bringing to the thing. I think it'll be a lot of fun."

Ronan: "Most definitely! Been awhile since I've been able to have some crawfish, so that'll be nice, and getting to see people will be good too. I admit I've ended up as a bit of a hermit with lab somehow." -chuckles-

Anita: "Can't say I blame you, with all the s**t that happened... But maybe this'll be a nice way to reconvene. Try to forget about that, at least for a little while."

Ronan: "Yeah... I also guess I just felt kinda bad for not getting my stuff back yet. Glad to have it off my chest finally."

Anita: "Yeah, I know how that is. Procrastinating 'cause you feel bad just makes it worse, though, so this is good all around! Now's the hard part," -laughs- "but when they get here, it'll seem like it all went by really quick."

Ronan: "True enough! I'll just have to use home prep to take up some of the time. Oh! Anything I might need to do different for their room?"

Anita: "Yep! Hmm. I didn't do a whole lot different for Cruz, but I guess it depends on them. Not knowing what to expect, I just got some sheets I thought he might like based on his essence and freed up space for him. He just uses it as a place to sleep anyway, so do what you think you should for any other kid and then you can work out the specifics when they get there."

Ronan: "True enough. Now to just figure out a spot for all the stuff that was being stored in the room." -laughs- "Either way, thanks for all the advice today. Feels good that things are on their way."

Anita: "Sure thing! Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm no expert but we'd been in the same boat now, huh?"

Ronan: "Hmm... can't think of anything at the moment. And true enough! I'll be sure to send a message your way when they arrive."

Anita: "Yes please, I'm sure Cruz'll want to meet them as soon as he can. Me too."

Ronan: "Sure thing." -pauses for a moment, another voice heard in the background- "Alright, I think I'm going head out for the evening. Thanks for the advice!"

Anita: "No problem! Good luck, and see you on Saturday."

Ronan: "See you then! Bye." -click-

Flyby Invitation
[IM RP with Neonmace]

Henry: -humming, somewhat rushed in pace as he waits for the dial tone-

Anita: -some delay, actually seems like it might go to voice mail before there's a slight click and shuffle- "Yello?"

Henry: "Hey!! Is this..." -a paper shuffle can be heard- "Anita Bishop?"

Anita: -stammers a second- "Uh, yeah! Yeah, this is."

Henry: -barely misses a beat- "Hi! I'm Ethiriel's new guardian and I was told that Cruz was a good friend of hers so I wanted to give a call!"

Anita: -gives a short relieved laugh, then cuts herself off and pauses- "N-new-- Uh, I'm sorry, did you say new guardian? For Ethiriel?"

Henry: -falters a little, then laughs awkwardly- "Yeah, it's-- uh, it's kind of a strange situation but yeah. My name's Henry Knight, I worked with Leo a few times in the past."

Anita: -pauses again, mouth open, then gives another short laugh- "Um. Y-yeah, alright. I guess, uh, I guess fill me in but-- is everything okay? You sound kind of in a rush."

Henry: -picks back up again, voice strong- "Oh, well... Well, Ethiriel's taken the switch a bit hard but otherwise things are okay! I was thinking it'd be really good for her to meet up with some of her friends!"

Anita: "Oh! Oh, gosh, yeah. Of course." -taps lightly on the back of the phone for a second- "We, um-- we were actually supposed to get together with her a few months ago, but I guess... this happened. Hm."

Henry: "I'm sorry to hear you missed it... but we're gonna fix that!! When do you think you and Cruz are free? I'm sure she'd love to hang out with you guys since plans fell through!"

Anita: -sounds a little lighter when she laughs again- "Yeah, of course. Cruz was pretty sad he didn't get to see her, but things got kind of busy for us too." -hums through her sigh, giving it some thought- "Let's see... I'm gonna be pretty busy this month with new releases and pre-orders..."

Henry: "That's disappointing but I certainly wouldn't want you to miss work! How do you think it's gonna be afterwards?"

Anita: -doesn't answer immediately- "Ah-- actually! You know what? There is something. How does your 15th look?"

Henry: -hums in thought, flipping through papers- "Well, I'm not technically scheduled that day as far as I'm aware but I can always put a request in! What's happening that day?"

Anita: "Have you been to the Lab building? Like uh, do you know the address? I don't know how you feel about sea food, but there's gonna be a pot luck on the 15th. We tried to get invites out to everyone but it must've gotten lost in transition with Leo."

Henry: "Yeah, we went to Lab to get the switch officiated and all that." -pauses when she continues talking- "Oh man, that sounds absolutely awesome! And, er... Yeah, Leo wasn't taking the switch well, either. I haven't been able to get in touch with him, either. But things will be okay I'm sure!! I know Ethiriel will love it."

Anita: -mentions quietly- "That explains why I wasn't getting through to him..." -perks back up, smile more obvious in her voice- "Awesome. It's gonna start officially around five o'clock and you can bring any food or games or stuff you want. I know what Ethiriel eats already so I'll have her covered in prep but you go ahead and bring any extra you want, okay?"

Henry: -doesn't hear her mumbling and picks up on her mood- "Great! Definitely sounds like a plan! And oh!! Thank you! I'm sure she'll be fine with what's done in prep since she doesn't seem to feed much as it is..." -mumbles, himself- "At least not since I picked her up..." -a bit louder- "But yes, thank you!! It means a lot and I know she'll feel better!"

Anita: -smiles more from Henry's enthusiasm but does catch his slight mumble, which makes her sober a little. Doesn't have much time to react with how quick he bounces back- "Ah-- great! Yeah, I hope so. We were getting worried but we figured things were just busy. I know Leo's pretty into his work."

Henry: -huffs, switching ears- "Yeah... that's why he made the decision. He felt awful about, well, 'trapping' Ethiriel as he put it. He wanted her to be happy and free."

Anita: "Aw, man... I didn't realize that was going on. That's a shame." -chews her lip- "Well, I hope things get better for both of them. And-- it's not like they can't talk, right?"

Henry: "Yeah, yeah!! I asked him if he wanted to keep in touch and he agreed despite being difficult to get in touch with--" -pauses, perking up a little more- "He just needs some time is all I think. Things will get better!"

Anita: -sounds firm and assured- "Good. We're really looking forward to seeing her, and it'll be great to meet you! Is-- do you need anything else, or--?"

Henry: "Yeah I totally look forward to it!" -flips through papers again but is only quiet for a moment- "No, no -- everything's good! Just checkin' in on Ethiriel's friends to see who would like to volunteer face time!!"

Anita: "Ah, gotcha. I'll let you get back to it, then. Thanks for callin', it really put us at ease. Hope the 15th comes faster now." -laughs-

Henry: "Thanks, Anita! It was nice talking to you!! I'm sorry I didn't try calling sooner but I'm glad to put you at ease!! I'm sure it'll be a blast! G'night!"

Anita: "No problem, man! See ya!"

Crawfish Boil

A pot-luck held at Lab 305 on March 15th.

Taking it Easy

Lab 305's garden area was bustling well after dark. When dusk came, a roaring bon fire was lit that many settled around to warm themselves, chat, and heat up some extra food on skewers. A large portion of the guests stuck around quite late but the last to leave were the humans Cruz surrounded himself with as they worked hard to clean up the mess of the potluck.

To keep things simple, Duncan left his car at Wavecrest so he and Mordekai carpooled with Anita and Cruz in the Oldsmobile on the way to the lab and Leigh arrived separately in her own vehicle at the function. Anita suggested Leigh follow her car and Duncan offered to drive with her to help keep the red wagon in sight. That left Mordekai to ride shotgun with Anita while Cruz took the backseat all to himself.

It was a long and full day for all of them but Cruz could tell he was the only one still raring to go. Anita's movements were languid until she got into the car and Mordekai's eyelids looked quite heavy. The drive from Lab to the apartments wasn't a long one but the journey was quiet. Cruz often twisted in his seat to peer back and the cars behind them and try to pick out Duncan and Leigh but it was a difficult task in the darkness with nothing but headlights beaming at him.

After about twenty minutes of sparse chatting and quite a few yawns, they pulled into the apartment parking lot. Mordekai and Anita both stepped out, stretched, and leaned against the car before Leigh pulled in with Duncan. Only then did Cruz exit.

Goodbyes seemed imminent as Duncan and Leigh stepped out as well. They all rubbed their eyes and yawned and laughed.

It surprised Cruz, then, that Anita would invite them upstairs. All three of them had a long trip ahead, all the way across the water back to the Barton area. Driving as sleepy as they all were was no good, she mentioned, and none of them seemed to need much convincing.

Together they went up, Leigh sticking close to Duncan and Mordekai while Cruz did the same to Anita. She lead the way to their room on the third floor. Tango greeted them rambunctiously but was quickly subdued. ”Couch bed's free range,” Anita offered to any of their group weary enough for need of a nap. It was an offer that didn't fall on deaf ears.

Before long, everyone took something of a rest whether it was on the sofa bed or at the dining room table. Anita offered them all water and for a while Mordekai stayed put on the balcony, admiring the view of the boardwalk and night covered ocean. They scarcely spoke, all in soft whispers and only with questions of care. It was Duncan who noted it was getting late for all of them and they should head back before they got too comfortable.

Parting ways this time was much more structured; everyone thanked each other, Cruz hugged and got kisses from each that was comfortable, and Anita walked them back to the front door of the building.

It was rare Cruz ever had such a full day but he found he vastly preferred these bustling social gatherings to the calmer mundane days wiled away with cartoons or video games. He hoped he would get a chance to meet up with everyone like this again soon.

Contact the Contacts
A week after the boil.

When Anita and Minerva were at work, there was still a lot for Cruz to do. Of his most important responsibilities, after having been deemed able to handle himself on his own, was taking care of Tango. While the dog could also handle himself, quite well in fact, it was always nicer to have company; someone to play with, fill his bowls if they were running short, and most importantly someone to take him outside.

For a frei, walking a dog was a bit of a challenge. Not having legs to ground himself with allowed Tango more leeway than the hound was used to, and more than Anita generally cared to offer, but Cruz didn't mind. Only once had he ever lost total control of the animal, and that was in the park due to an errant squirrel. Cruz didn't walk Tango in the park anymore, even with Anita; if he had the leash then they were to walk where there were as few small animals as possible. Even the seagulls offered little distraction to Tango, as they would quickly fly out of reach -- and out of his attention.

Cruz unlocked the apartment door and allowed Tango to enter first. The dog shook himself off, leash and collar jingling noisily beneath his bandana. Each of his paws clacked along the wooden floor as he skittered out of the croc's reach. Cruz laughed and chased after him with halfhearted ferocity so he could detach Tango's leash. Once done, it fell to the floor and Tango whined excitedly when Cruz put his arms around the dog's neck.

Like this, the two trotted lazily about the apartment. Cruz snuggled into his companion's furry shoulders and Tango panted while seeking out his water bowl. The sound of water slurping and the metallic grinding against the floor sounded a bit strange compared to the usual.

Lifting his head, Cruz concentrated on the otherwise quiet apartment. When he couldn't hear well enough to determine why it sounded odd, he released Tango and floated higher. Still nothing.

He retreated into the living area, where the discordance grew more prominent. On the side table, Anita's phone sat and vibrated. His rune pulsed with worry; it should have been with her, like it always was. Gritting his teeth, Cruz approached and peeked at the small front screen of the flip while it was still illuminated.

2 Missed Calls.

With no short amount of uncertainty, Cruz plucked the phone up in his claws. With the screen open, he squinted at the name listed. Suddenly the phone vibrated again and Cruz jerked his head back. New voicemail. He didn't know the code to listen to the voicemails, so that would have to wait. Unfortunately, he didn't know the number to the game store either to let Anita know she'd left her phone at home and her mom was trying to get in touch with her, unless it was in the contacts.

Cruz frowned and clumsily thumbed through the phone's menu until he located the contact list. It was surprisingly extensive, including many names he'd never seen before, but also many familiar ones. Some he had to sound out aloud to understand they were people he knew, but each one he recognized made him smile, Duncan, Mordekai, Shepard, and Ronan especially. Justin was a new addition that Cruz vaguely recalled, both being mentioned by Anita after the Christmas party and from the boil. Henry took more time to recollect; Cruz knew he hadn't met this man but Anita did inform him about Ethiriel's situation.

As Tango fed and watered himself, Cruz settled on the sofa bed with his shoulders resting against the pillows. They were slightly askew, as were the sheets, as Anita hadn't bothered to straighten the bed after getting up with them not expecting company. He continued to thumb through her contacts, smiling upon any name he recognized – especially his friends. She had all of the raevans he knew listed in here as well, save for Melisande, Ekundayo, and Revontulet, but he had no doubt their names would soon be added once Anita got the opportunity.

The boil was a great deal of fun for everyone, Cruz was sure, but it would also be nice to see any of his friends again one on one so they wouldn't get jostled around or called away so easily. After Anita took care of her phone business with Minerva, he would make sure to ask her when he could next have a get together with someone so she could call and set it up.

The croc paused mid button press.

Anita had always been the one to ask his friends over, ask if he could hang out. Sometimes these meetings were arranged without his prior knowledge, something which he didn't mind at all and found absolutely exciting. When was the last time Anita arranged a get together for herself?

Cruz's lips tightened and he brought the phone closer to his face. Once more he scrolled through the her contacts, this time with more intensity. He lifted from the bed and, without parting from the phone, set about finding a sheet of paper and pencil. Access to this phone wouldn't last more than a few hours and he wanted this to be a surprise. Only when he found the materials did he set the phone back on the couch-side table. Cruz leaned unnecessarily close to the page as he tried to write neatly and slowly, eyes darting between the lines and the phone for each individual contact he knew for certain Anita would be ecstatic to see in a personal setting.

He absolutely couldn't fathom any reason Anita wouldn't appreciate getting to see her friends without the hustle and bustle of tons of others around. Any reason she would be unhappy to not have set these meetings up herself. Obviously she hadn't been taking the time to do it, she was awfully preoccupied worrying about him and work and everything else. He just wanted to do something nice for her right back!

After almost an hour, and one aching wrist later, Cruz leaned back to examine his work. Several names were jotted down, along with the numbers Anita had on record. He folded it carefully and deposited the sheet into one of the drawers in their bedroom he knew she hardly used. This would be a long term project, he knew, but Anita deserved to enjoy herself with her friends and be happy.

Flock to the Shepard
[IM RP with Atmadja]

First on Cruz's list was a man he felt more familiar with. While he and Shepard were not deeply acquainted, he knew that Anita was on very good terms with him and the two were somewhat playful. Vivi and he had waxed philosophical about their opinions of kissing before, that they both considered it private and only to be done with certain people. Shepard seemed like a good lead.

His claws hit the numbers on the cordless phone slowly. Cruz kept checking every individual number over as he dialed, one at a time, making sure he was getting this absolutely right. He had never made a phone call before, not like this; of course he had used a phone but it was always Anita's cell and almost always after she had already been speaking for some time.

The sound of the ringer on the other line was somewhat entrancing and Cruz waited impatiently for an answer to Shepard's mobile.

"Arright, aright," Shepard told his phone, yelling across the kitchen as though it could actually hear him and be soothed. He splashed his hands under the faucet and quickly dried them, flour still sticking to his forearms as he made his way to his phone. The number on the face surprised him -- Anita's home number. He had her cell from the woman herself, but the home number he had programmed from the Lab contact sheet, and to his recollection, this was the first time he'd seen it come up.

He grinned faintly. They'd barely gotten to say much of a hello at the potluck, he'd gotten so deeply into conversation with Trox. But that could all be remedied.

"Yeah, hullo?" he said, putting the phone to his ear, his tone slightly more colloquial and friendly than his usual greeting.

A soft gasp was Shepard's first greeting as the croc on the other end of the line smiled excitedly. The ringing had been going for a while, Cruz hadn't been sure if the call went through.

"Hello," he purred in a voice unmistakably not Anita's, "Shepard? This is Cruz. Did I call right?"

Shepard blinked, momentarily stunned by the different in the voice he'd expected to be on the line. He hadn't really talked to Cruz much... er... had he ever really talked to Cruz?

"Oi! Cruz, nice to hear from yah, mate, how y'doin'?" he said, looking around the empty kitchen. Had Cruz wanted Cesc? Where was Cesc today, anyway?

"Good, thanks," he grinned, holding the phone close to his ear with both hands.

He was alone in the apartment, save for Tango, and thus had no need to be subtle but his excitement was getting the better of him despite his even toned voice.

"How are you?"

Time and again, he'd heard Anita and Minerva make calls. Just from overhearing he knew how they basically went, and he wanted to make sure he did this right. Small talk wasn't what he wanted but if Shepard was anything like Anita after all then he would appreciate the conversation being eased into.

"Glad to hear it. 'm great, thanks," Shepard rolled his fingers through his cropped hair, confusion mixing with curiosity in his head. He looked at his hands -- ech, still a bit of flour! -- and flicked the excess of it out of his hair. Cruz hadn't asked yet for Cesc, was he being polite or did the croc want to talk with HIM? "So, what can I do for yah, Cruz?"

"Mm," Cruz rumbled thoughtfully. Shepard was great. That meant this wasn't a bad time to ask something like this. His fingers fidgeted around the phone with childlike eagerness as he searched for a way to ease in further. "I have a question."

"Uh-huh?" Shepard prompted.

There it was. An open gate.

"Can you hang out with 'Nita?" Mm-- soon?"

Shepard blinked. Hang out with Anita? Was she lonely or something? Or was the frei, er... trying to invite him somewhere? "Ah, yeah, of course, we can hang out. What'd you guys have in mind?"

Another pleased gasp broke the conversational rhythm. "Anything--" Cruz stopped himself to briefly glance around the empty apartment, "--um... lunch? Maybe?"

Okay. Lunch with Anita and Cruz. With him? Specifically him. Not... the louder, more social one in Vivi, or the other Raevan in Cesc. Maybe ... well... okay, so Shepard didn't know why. But why not? He and Anita were better friends than she and Vivi, and he'd been absolute crap about introducing Cruz to Cesc, after all. "Yeah, absolutely. I can take off any time this week, just lemme know where and when's best for yah."

It was there Cruz lost momentum. He smiled wide at the floor, his rune thrumming with elation that he'd actually succeeded-- but then more information was required, information that he didn't have off the top of his head.

"Uh--"

Cruz grit his teeth. He flashed a worried look to Tango, who was sprawled out on the wooden floor. The just glanced up at him and let his tail thump once.

"'Nita has no work Sssatur-- N-no, Sunday. Yes. Um-- where do you live, Shepard? Gambino?"

The 'uh' caught Shepard a bit off-guard, who was starting to assume this was some sort of planned 'let's-ask-shep-to-lunch-but-you-do-the-calling' sort of scenario. Not everyone was great at the phone-thing. He almost thought to ask for Anita to be put on the phone, but bit his tongue at the last moment. What was the use of ruining the poor kid's groove? Cesc had bungled the crap out of his first few delivery calls; the only reason the frei was so good at social interactions now was because he was forced into them practically from day one.

"Sunday's good for me, I'm off. We're in Gambino, yeh, by the strip. I forget where you guys are, actually. If you're comin' into Gambino, we could always just go to Sand Dollar, it's a burger, shakes, and salad place that's pretty hard to miss on the strip. Shouldn't be too hard to get a seat there on Sunday lunch."

And just like that, Shep seemed to slide everything into place on his own. Cruz closed his eyes and sank silently to the floor, the weight of his relief pulling him down. He hadn't screwed this up!

"We're in Gambino," the croc assured him, "Sand Dollar-- yes! 'Nita would like that place. Thank you, Shepard." Cruz thanked the man with an almost breathless enthusiasm.

Cruz's tone brought a smile out of Shepard. Having barely made the croc's acquaintance, the Aussie couldn't help but like the croc -- he seemed an earnest, friendly sort, who cared for his guardian. It made sense: Anita was friendly and good-humored, and she was doing the raising. Shepard was looking forward to making better friends with him.

"Alright, great. Meet y'there, say, 12:30?"

"Yes! 12:30, Sunday, Sand Dollar. Thank you, Shepard. 'Nita will be happy."

While he certainly hadn't expected a negative reaction, as far as the offer of hanging out with Anita went, Cruz also hadn't expected this to go so smoothly. His own bump was flattened by Shepard's quick thinking and Cruz had barely had to lead things along once the conversation was going. The frei suspected the same of the man, he sounded very nice and Cruz couldn't think anything less of someone Anita willingly and warmly approached.

"Arright, see yah there," Shepard repeated, smiling as he ended the call. He looked down at his phone for an extra moment, thinking. Cruz seemed plenty nice, but he had to wonder: why wasn't the invite extended to Rhede? Surely Anita would want the freis to meet each other, wouldn't she? But then, Cruz had done the inviting, and it was rude to just bring along another body.

He shrugged, heading back to his station and spreading flour on his hands once more as he began to work. He'd figure it out on Sunday.

As soon as he got off the phone with Shepard, Cruz went to the sheet of paper he tucked away in the dresser. He put a small check mark next to Shepard's name, a sign of success, and then went digging for another sheet of paper. His scrawl was large and messy but legible, if one could decipher the frequent misspelling.

Shepard - Sonday, Twev Thirty, Sand Doller

When Anita got home, she was regaled with a short explanation. Shepard had been the one to suggest the Sand Dollar in the first place, so it was an easy twist for Cruz to say Shepard had been the one to invite her at all. There was similar confusion; Cruz wasn't going? Was Vivi going to be there? Cruz was much quicker on the draw with his guardian than Shepard, and soon she was placated and eager for the coming Sunday. As Cruz assured Shepard, it sounded like her kind of place.

Before long, Sunday came and Anita was pulling up to Sand Dollar's parking lot in her ten year old burgundy Oldsmo'. Her ensemble was scarcely different from the norm, similar in fact to what she wore to the boil with her hoodie tied around her waist just in case it got chilly later on. Jeans, sneakers, teal tanktop, double braids, she was easy to spot in a crowd.

Shepard sat at at table in Sand Dollar's patio in his usual summer gear: flip-flops, shorts and a t-shirt, this particular one of an ocean-blue shade that tried its best to pull similar notes out of the grey in his eyes. He had just sat, looking around the strip for Anita and her green Raevan as he did so. As hostess left to retrieve waters, he spotted Anita approaching from the parking lot, his eyes latching on to the double-braids easily from a distance. But -- hey, where was Cruz? Was he ahead of her, or behind? Had he already gone in?

The Aussie took off his sunglasses and raised his voice in an "Oi!" to get Anita's attention, waving at her.

Anita glanced in the direction of the voice just for a moment as she kept walking. Her immediate instinct was that it was for someone else, until she looked back and looked closer, recognizing the man's features beyond his unfamiliar clothes. Her face lit up and she turned to a jog, slowing up just beside the table.

"Hey," she smiled, seating herself across from him. She took a moment to scootch her chair in to her liking, then rested both arms against the table. "How ya been?"

Shepard smiled, half-rising as Anita came beside the table and clapping her on the shoulder in a hello. He sat back down as she did, and opened his mouth to speak just as the waters came and the waiter handed Anita her own menu. He nodded at the waiter and then looked back at Anita before turning in his chair to look where she had just come from.

"I'm great, thanks, you?" He looked back at her with an easy grin. "Cruz taking his time?"

His greeting was unexpected but not unwelcomed. Anita hung her head and grinned at the table at the quick contact, lifting back up when the waiter came by. Anita looked at the third glass curiously as she offered a quiet 'thanks' for her menu. Shep was quick to sweep her back into conversation and she smiled gratefully. Cruz, though? Anita turned to look where Shepard had.

"Mmmnope," she righted herself and flicked the side of the third glass with the back of her middle finger, "Just me. Sorry if things got confused, he's still learning the phone." Anita smiled and shrugged while pulling the errant water towards her, "I'll drink this, though--"

Shepard paused as she answered, his lips parting slightly as he blinked. "Oh, I gotcha..."

He threw his mind back to the conversation, frowning gently, then looked back up at Anita -- he didn't need to look disappointed to have her company, geezus. His expression melted into a faint grin and he waved it off. "I must've misunderstood when he called. I was under the impression he wanted us three to go to lunch t'gether. No worries."

"I'd wait before sayin' y'll drink that, though -- got some great shakes here. Gonna go for a straight chocolate one m'self. Burgers not too bad either, especially the specials. I'll probably do the hickory BBQ with the fries." He settled back in his chair. "Not on a diet or anything, right? Cause I'm pretty bad at curbing back with food I like."

Her own smile wavered at Shepard's reaction. His frown was caught, however brief, and that certainly confirmed there was some confusion. It wasn't until Shepard elaborated, though, that the confusion bled over to her. Had Cruz specified who called? He said Shepard did the inviting, at least, but she was having trouble remembering the exact details the frei had given her. Seems he still had some work to do in getting information across.

Oh well. They were here now, no use dwelling over confusion. Shep did say he thought Cruz wanted the three of them, not that he had asked for Cruz to attend. This would be fine, wouldn't it?

Anita was quick to perk back up as he turned her attention back to the water. She hummed at the thought of milkshakes, burgers, and fries. Diets? "Oh hell no," she laughed, "Let my metabolism do most of the work, bike off the rest. I'm eatin' whatever I want -- and that all sounds damn good."

"Great," said Shepard with a laugh. "Hate it when people get mad at me for ordering insensitive stuff while they're eating a salad. Like it's my fault."

The waiter swept back by their table to get their drink orders and Shepard made his full order as he'd described. It wasn't until Anita had done her own ordering and the waiter left that Shepard thought again, his mind going back to his earlier conversation with Cruz. Why had he gotten the impression that Anita had been there?

"Y'know, I hadn't really gotten a good chance to talk to Cruz before he called. He seems like a good kid. I think he and Rhede might get along."

"Tell me about it," she chuckled, adjusting in her seat as the waiter came back. Her own order matched Shepard's almost entirely, though she forewent the BBQ in place of a double cheese burger.

Anita couldn't help but smile at Shepard's opinion of Cruz, even as she sipped her water. "Yeah, he tries. Sweet as anything but confusion isn't unusual with him. Rhede is, um--" she lifted two fingers atop her head to signify antlers, "--the pink one from the boil? Didn't really get a chance to talk to him either but he's very nice, I think they'd like each other a lot too. So far, Cruz hasn't disliked any raevan he's met."

"Yeah..." said Shepard, scratching his stubble idly. "I don't know why, but I could've sworn I got the impression you were there when we were on the phone, or that you were helping him out or something. He sounded really eager but... I don't know. Halting, I guess?" He shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "It's alright, Rhede had to get used to taking deliveries on the phone and there were some issues at the beginning, too."

He smiled then, his eyes warming. "Yeah, he's the pink one. Actually I think he told me that he and Cruz met once, but it wasn't the best circumstances -- told me Cruz helped him a bit after he got out of the jungle, and he was a real wreck then." Shepard shook his head. "If he helped at all, I'm glad he was there."

Anita leaned her elbows on the table while listening. "Huh," she murmured, "Nah, I was at work all day. He told me about it when I got home."

That seemed strange, but then again Cruz's speech style was still sort of clunky. His vocabulary and understanding of the English language had grown by leaps and bounds since he was first released from the tank but his usage of it was short and clumsy. Maybe that was what Shep had picked up on. After all, he wasn't used to how Cruz spoke.

She rested forward, sinking down against her arms with a smile that wasn't sure whether it wanted to be warm or somber. "Cruz mentioned helping some people into the bus. He was pretty distraught about the whole thing, actually... Can't blame him. Even I got kinda messed up there," Anita twisted her right arm toward Shepard and dragged her index finger along the scar Anya had given her beneath her shoulder.

"Huh..." said Shepard in response. Something about the call was still bothering him, he just couldn't put his finger on exactly what it was. And anyhow, Anita's showing of her scar pushed the thoughts right out of his mind. He leaned forward to get a better look at it, drawing breath in between closed teeth, his eyes narrowing.

"Holy s**t," he murmured, leaning back again. "I can't ever think of that weekend without thinking how much I should've been there. Rhede came out looking like he went ten rounds with a grain thresher and acting like it, too. If I let myself think about it too much, I still get pretty pissed off. You guys never should've gone in like that."

His speech was interrupted by the arrival of milkshakes. The clatter of the porcelain cups on the metal table popped his sour expression like a bubble.

"Sorry to bring that up. I know it's not exactly everyone's favorite topic. That guy I met at the boil, Trox, he was still pretty steamed over it, too."

Anita grimaced as she pulled her arm back. The pain was long gone, the wound was more than healed, but that didn't make things easier on her mind -- or anyone else's.

"No, we shouldn't have. Thought we were just the back up, you know?" Anita scoffed and folded her arms, "I, uh, wrote an angry letter." It wasn't much in the grand scheme of things but maybe it was enough to issue a reassessment of Lab 305's internal policies.

The milkshakes did a good job of shaking her own thoughts. Anita shrugged and gave a lopsided smirk as she pulled her shake closer. "S'okay. Not ate up over it. Specially not this," she scoffed and shifted her scarred arm. "Oh yeah, you and Trox were talkin' a lot. He was in my group for the thing."

Shepard took a long drink, smiling around his straw as Anita mentioned her angry letter. He'd wanted to go in and yell at someone, but he was fairly certain the doctor was indisposed and the only other person he could yell at would be Alex, who was a victim herself and certainly was Not An Option as far as he was concerned.

"Was he?" Shepard perked slightly at the thought, his eyebrows lifting. "That's good. He seems like the kind who'd keep you guys pretty safe. Safer than that poor b*****d Zeke kept Rhede, not that it was his fault or anything." He laughed, a wry sound.

"Anyway -- that's it!" He snapped his fingers. "THAT'S what was bugging me. I couldn't figure out why Cruz would call and invite me to something he wasn't coming to. Took me ages to figure out what he wanted on the phone, but I thought he'd, I don't know, want to talk to me or something over lunch." Shepard laughed. "Guess not, but I'll take the company that came jus' fine."

Fingers clutched around her shake glass and straw tucked between her lips, Anita nodded. "Mhm. Yeah, he did good for what got thrown at us. We all got a little bumped around, which-- s**t, considering what everyone else looked like, I think we got off easy..." Anita grimaced again. She'd seen the condition Zeke was in on the chopper ride back. They definitely got off easy.

At the snap of Shep's fingers, her brows lifted. It only took a second more for them to knit. "He invited...?" She frowned. "I thought he-- hm." Her face went through several different expressions, from confusion, to annoyance, scrutiny, then a strange sort of acceptance. Anita propped one cheek up with her palm. "Maybe I misunderstood, too. Dunno why he called you out of the blue like that." She laughed quietly and dropped her hand. "Sorry about that. Nice to be out, though. Thanks for picking the place out-- ...you did do that, right?"

Shepard took another long drink as he watched her, uncertain of the chain of emotions that swept across her face. He focused so hard on it that he swallowed too much ice cream and gave himself brain freeze, making an impolite groan and pinching the bridge of his nose until the feeling passed. He hadn't meant to make things uncomfortable, he just hadn't understood Cruz's motives. Why would he want just him and Anita to have lunch?

... hm.

HM.

Coughing dryly, he waved a hand, then returned it to rub his throat gently. His voice, when it came out, was thin and watery, self-amused. There was a note of helpless laughter in his voice. “Don’t worry about it. It’s all probably fine, yeh?” He cleared his throat, returning to normal. “Not sure what he’s got to get out of this, exactly — it’s not your birthday and everyone else forgot or something, right?”

As he spoke, the waiter returned with their meals, setting each one down with minimal noise. Shepard quickly assured him that both meals were indeed correct, and then set about soothing his throat with a couple of nice warm french fries.

"Oh yeah, totally." Of course it was fine. Actually, Anita hadn't had a friendly outing without Cruz in, god, months, at least. It was a pleasant surprise. As she took another sip of her shake, Shepard's question caught her off guard and nearly sent some up her nose. She coughed and covered her mouth as it turned to laughter. "That would have been back in February."

Not the everyone forgetting part, at least.

Anita thanked their waiter and dug into her fries first, as well. Several were dipped into her chocolate shake before being eaten to mix the sweet and salty up.

"That's good, a'least. Maybe he thought y'needed a day out." Shepard took his burger in his hands, squashing down the tall, toasted bun and taking a big bite out of it. Barbecue sauce smeared across his face as he did so -- an unfortunate but unavoidable part of eating anything with it -- and he wiped himself off as he chewed thoughtfully and swallowed. "Say, he isn't the sort that'd be plannin' somethin' while yer out, ey?"

He took a few fries, pointing at her with one as she dipped one of hers into her shake. "An' what the ******** is that?"

Anita hummed and smiled at Shepard's suggestion. It was a nice thought, Cruz looking out for her like that. "Wouldn't have been wrong, if he did," she shrugged and sipped her water. A laugh crept out and Anita covered her mouth with the back of her hand until she swallowed. "Nah, I don't think it's anything like that. He stays home to watch the dog a lot, he's well behaved."

As she dunked another fry into her shake, Anita paused and raised her brows at Shep. "Ah?" she held it up, chocolate clinging to and dripping off the salty potato wedge, "What, too gross for ya?" Anita smirked as she popped the whole thing in her mouth.

Shepard took another bite as she spoke, used to scarfing down lunches from being somewhat understaffed at the bakery, and had to remind himself to slow down. He leaned back, putting one hand over his mouth to keep from laughing as she defiantly dunked another fry into her shake. He swallowed, taking one himself, and contemplated it, hovering it over his shake.

He dipped a fry sort of daintily into the half-melted upper part of his milkshake, grimacing. "Jus' looks wrong."

As Shep hesitated dunking his own fry, Anita's look of playful mischief turned into genuine amusement. She covered her mouth again and laughed quietly, eyes lightly crinkled from her wide hidden smile.

"Tastes good, though. And it's all goin' in the same place," she lowered her hand long enough to dip another, though this time she waited and held onto it just as Shep did. "I thought it was gonna be nasty as hell. Saw my mom do it. The flavors don't really change but the milkshake gets a little saltier to offset the sweet." With a quirk of her brows, Anita held the fry closer to her mouth to quietly urge Shepard to do the same with his.

"Vivi did that to me with salted watermelon one time. Told me it enhanced the flavor while we were trying for different ice cream flavors," said Shepard, his voice amused. He looked askance at his fry, as though it were trying to con him, and pulled it back out of the shake. "Christ, it took her so long to convince me to try it I swear I thought she'd pour ice water on me in m'sleep. Wasn't bad, though. Supposedly salt brings out the best in chocolate, too, so..."

With a shrug, he popped the fry into his mouth. His brows knitted -- there were many conflicting flavors: warm and cool, salty and sweet, savory and chocolatey -- but ultimately, they weren't bad. He pulled his eyebrows up in a modest sort of surprise, and said simply: "Not gross!"

"Oh, that sounds good," Anita mentioned idly while he explained. Here and there she gave another small chuckle. "Mhm! Yeah, salty chocolate's one of my favorites, actually. Y'know, chocolate covered pretzels and all, it's really good."

She watched expectantly as Shep finally resolved to give it a shot. His silent affirmation of 'bottoms up' as he ate it made her smile more. Not gross! "Heeyyy," Anita laughed and raised her arms to celebrate.

Now it was her turn to dig into her burger, which she did after taking a long gulp of the shake proper. Smiling appreciatively, Anita closed her eyes to savor it. Food was so important. "I gotta come here more often."

He grinned as she held her arms up and bowed and pandered to an invisible applauding audience, putting a hand over his heart in mock-humility. "Yeh, yeh, what a triumph."

He smiled at her a little more broadly as she ate, his shoulders relaxing as he took another bite of his own half-finished burger. The sun was warm but the sea air was nice, and there was a wide shadow over their table that made the outdoors cool and pleasant. "Yeh, f'sure," he said, nodding."I always like this place, but Rhede doesn't really eat a lot yet and Vivi turns her nose up a bit at burgers. Lemme know when you come back, always up for a lunch."

"Aw, she does? Shame." Anita couldn't say she was surprised, though; Vivi had quite the figure and that wasn't acquired through eating this kind of food on the regular. She paused for a moment, smiling wryly over her burger. The offer was strangely unexpected. "Yeah? Sure, if you wanna. That'd be cool."

Her mind traced back to Cruz setting this up, his motivations. She really hadn't been spending a lot of time with her own friends in a long time. It was always get togethers for Cruz's benefit, in some form or another. Not that she didn't enjoy his company, she always loved tagging along, but it could sometimes be exhausting, especially when that seemed to be the only thing going on. It was nice to just be by herself sometimes and, more over, be with a friend one on one. Maybe he was more aware than she gave him credit for.

"What's Rhede eat, anyway? Cruz doesn't do solids but he drinks plenty of water, and his uh, hah, his natural food source is-- well, you know." How could either of them forget Cruz and Vivi kissing?

"Yeah, Vivi's very French. She'll eat an odd croque monsieur" -- he said the word in a pitched French accent, as silly as it was inaccurate -- "but nahhhhh, burgers are way too unhealthy." Shepard shook his head with amusement, and, as though in punctuation, took another big bite of his own burger. This bite was big enough that the sauce got right into his stubble, and although he wiped it off, a bit remained left behind.

He was glad for the misunderstanding, really. He liked Anita and he liked making new friends -- he'd enjoyed her company since he'd met her, Christ! over two years prior. She'd seemed level-headed and good-humored. But things had never worked out where they could really talk or hang out a little. And it was nice to have a friend at Lab, a normal ******** friend, that wasn't primarily Vivi's.

He was pulled from the thoughts by her question, and he took a sip of his milkshake before replying. "Nothin' like Cruz, or he'd be pretty grossly overweight with Vivi at the helm. He feeds on dawn, goes out in the morning and does his thing by himself. Also, kind of interesting, he can eat good deeds. He told me about it a couple times. If someone does something nice for someone else near 'im, he can feed off it. He tastes a few things at the bakery, too, y'know, little strawberries, sugar, really light stuff. Seems to like the taste. He's pretty excited 'bout getting a stomach one day."

Anita snickered, nodding. To show her agreement, she took a big bite of her burger with him. Hers was considerably less messy but she took a quick wipe at her face all the same.

"Oh, wow," she breathed, eyes wide with wonder. Each time she learned how a raevan fed it seemed to get more and more interesting, but all of them fed in such unique ways they couldn't truly be compared. His secondary food source was of note, as well, which Anita tilted her head at. Cruz didn't seem to have an alternative way to eat, it was always kisses. "So far, Cruz seems pretty ambivalent about stomachs. Maybe it's 'cause he hasn't met many sigels, though."

How many was it now? Melisande was one, Zul another, and Cruz told her that LuLu had grown since their encounter in Aekea.

"Has he not?" Shepard tilted his head, rubbing his stubble thoughtfully. Seeing a dash of barbecue on his hand, he splashed a little water onto his napkin and scrubbed his chin with it. "Geezus this stuff gets everywhere... Ah -- yeh, Rhede likes that guy, Zul, a lot, and he hangs out with the uh... the blonde one, the miraculously pretty one. And he's good friends with the one that used to be mute. Jeeooh? Shoe? What's his name? And the really dramatic guy, the green one."

"Mm-mm," she shook her head, smiling lightly. Anita set her burger back down to return to her fries and the shake for the moment. Shep's messy burger adventures while he spoke kept an almost perpetual smirk on her face.

It perked into a real smile at the mention of Zul, she remembered Rhede with Zul and Ethiriel at the crawfish boil, as well as-- the miraculously pretty one. "Melisande," she mumbled, smile faded. Her brows furrowed at the other two. She certainly didn't know any raevans that used to be mute. The dramatic one took a moment to sink in but, once it clicked, Anita grimaced and scoffed.

"Yeah, Eiry. That's right, I forgot about him. Cruz knows him, too. Eiry, Zul, and we sort of met Meli back at the garden party with the hedge maze but she was in our group in the search, too." It was difficult for her to maintain a smile while discussing the song muse.

Shep took the proactive approach to his burger, finishing it off and then wiping his face when he was done, leaning back with an expression of wolflike satisfaction as he took his milkshake off the table to nurse it as he relaxed. He noted the shift in Anita's expression -- it seemed Zul was well-liked almost universally -- but her natural, unaffected smile disappeared at the mention of Melisande. He thought back to her, from the brief meeting they'd had.

Then it clicked to him: the search. Always the stupid search.

"Melisande, that's it. She always comes by when me and Vivi aren't around, when Rhede opens or closes. Vivi met her recently and had rave reviews, but there's not really anyone I know that doesn't get rave reviews from her." Shepard shrugged. "She's gorgeous, and she seemed nice at the potluck. This lady was asking her some stuff that made her uncomfortable -- what she was made out of and whatever, so I kind of took the bad-cop role and asked the lady to stop. Left a bit after so nobody'd feel awkward about it, but I didn't much get to talk to her. I hope she's nice, she seems to like Rhede pretty good."

He leaned forward for a fry and held it up in a 'eureka' moment as she pronounced Eiry's name. "THA'S RIGHT, Eiry. That guy! He actually was the first one to meet Rhede -- you know, he actually escaped the lab after he came outta the tank, Eiry found him for us. Haven't seen him in a tick, though."

Always the stupid search.

She didn't mean to bring it up again but there it was. Anita was grateful Shepard didn't pick that up so much as Melisande herself. Nodding, she remained attentive and did her best to pull back any discomfort on the topic of the sigel.

"I think she is. Just, mm--" Anita shrugged a little. Until certain events, she would have agreed whole heartedly; Melisande was definitely gorgeous and she was kind but there was something else there that Anita had trouble putting into a single word that was less than pleasant. Maybe it was all circumstantial but she knew Trox was in the same boat, and even Eiry at the time.

Her smile came back at Shepard's enthusiasm over Eirdirsceol and she managed a laugh. "s**t, really? What a little escape artist." Anita took another sip of her milkshake and scoffed. "We met him and-- uhh I forget his guardian's name-- over in Durem. Thought I ran the ******** over but he did his ghost thing." She lifted both arms and slid one hand through the other up to her elbow, to exemplify.

Shepard covered his mouth in a laugh, his eyes brightening, and shook his head, cutting it short. "s**t! Sorry! I'm not laughing you ran the kid over. That's awful." He laughed again despite himself, putting his milkshake down and letting his shoulders shake for a moment.

He said the last few words with more mirth than malice, shaking his head.

Hearing Shepard laugh full out made it easy for Anita to slip back out of her momentary funk. Her own eyes brightened and what was something of a half smile turned wide and giggly. "Nooo, you're fine," she laughed, patting the table near his arm rather than touching him.

"Oh my god, Eiry." His guardian certainly made it seem like the sigel's antics were common. It was nice to know someone else he'd messed with. "Damn near broke a tooth pick off in my a**, he came outta nowhere. Got an earful from his guardian and shook Cruz and I up pretty bad but it's funny now." She shook her head and scoffed. "Lots of characters in Lab, huh?"

Shepard nodded, his mirth dying down to a smile. "Yeh." He shrugged. "When I first got roped into this, I thought -- ********, these people are all plonkers and whackers. Met a few Raevans at first and thought, what the ******** am I getting into? But it's turned out alright. Rhede's a good one, and Cruz seems like he's a good sort, himself."

Anita gave another short laugh, this time into her milkshake.

"Plonkers and whackers. Guess it's good we first met without Lab intervention," she snickered, "But man, it's weird realizing how small a place Gaia really is to meet other raevans and affiliates by chance. I'm glad things are going alright on your end." The compliment to Cruz made her pause and smile as she put both hands around her milkshake. "Yeah, he's good. Not at all what I expected but I don't think I could be happier with a different one around."

Shepard smiled, taking a few fries and munching on them thoughtfully, nodding along to her comment.

"I thought..." he said musingly.
"... that Rhede would for sure be a small girl, big eyes, cute like a kitten. The exact sorta thing I couldn't say no to, just to make my life harder. Thought it right up until he walked -- floated, I guess -- through the door." He smiled over the table at Anita.
"What'd you think you were in for? Y'told me a while back you didn't expect the croc, right?"

What an image he painted with that description. Anita beamed. "The croc was a surprise," she parroted, nodding, "I guess I didn't expect someone so... affectionate." Anita pursed her lips and gently rocked in her seat, "Someone rougher, I think, with the croc. Then there was the mistletoe-- 'forceful's right in the name, so I was kind of preparing for someone intimidating and petulant. Kind of a brat. Ornery. Cruz has some difficulty understanding certain rules, so maybe that's what came over from it, but he's very sweet. I think I lucked out."

Shepard laughed. He didn't know Cruz well enough to say, but he was already fond of his one, misunderstanding-laced interaction with him. It'd given him a nice afternoon. "Guess we both did, really. It's not that easy, y'know. Rhede's like -- a blend between a foreign exchange student and a little brother, and it's easy to forget sometimes he's still making his way, learning stuff. You ever feel like that?"

"Oh, all the time. Every day." She leaned forward to rest a hand on her cheek and prop her elbow against the table while her other went for the fries. "It took a while for Cruz to get the hang of a lot of social conventions, language included, so communication was difficult early on. It's weird, though, because usually he's very direct he's just-- short about it and sometimes he doesn't know the right terms for things, so it still gets confusing, as you're aware." Anita laughed and rubbed her temple. "He tries, though. He really does. I noticed Rhede was very well spoken at the boil, so that must make things a little easier, huh?"

Shepard smiled wryly and nodded at the 'it gets confusing' part, having confused himself right into lunch with Anita just days prior. But he shrugged at the next part, thinking about Cesc -- the past few months had been much easier than the ones before, but the stag had his own limitations and challenges.

"Rhede's a good guy. Almost too good. He's pretty verbal, yah, although for a while he got a lot of words confused and he still tends to speak a little weird sometimes -- I think it's cause he speaks French with Vivi. But he tries real hard and takes a lot of responsibility on himself and feels kind of disheartened if he can't get things right." Shepard shook his head. "That's what happened with the jungle. Rhede's -- well, I know Raevans have a lot of powers, but Rhede's just got the one that I know of. He can find stuff that's lost. So when they asked him to go into the jungle, he figured he'd have it cinched. But he didn't, and people got hurt and so did he, and he took that real hard, even though he found the doctor in the end. Took it right out of him."

"Oh, yeah. That's cool, though. I wish I could teach Cruz multiple languages but, hah," Anita lightly tapped the side of her head with a finger. She was about to ask how they dealt with Rhede's learning, did they exclusively teach him themselves, did he have a tutor, or something else, when the jungle came back up. Anita frowned and nodded. "I can imagine... Cruz was feeling really sorry by the end of it, too. I don't think... no, Cruz doesn't have any powers. I wonder how strange that is. Hm." Even if he did, she couldn't imagine they would have been much help. What would any of them have done to make that situation less costly? Less dangerous.

Shepard shrugged and waved a hand. "Never mind about all that. If you wanna teach Cruz another language, jes' bring him over. We got plenty floatin' around our place. He can sit with Rhede during a lesson."

Anita took a short, grateful breath. "Really? God, I'd really appreciate that. I'm sure he'd have a lot of fun too, he misses Vivi and I bet it'll be nice to see Rhede again."

"For sure," Shepard said, nodding. "He goes to 'school' every day with our friend, Gran-- er, Trudy Maplethorpe. She's got a bit of the old-world governess in her, but she's great at it. He gets homework and everythin'. Sure he wouldn't mind someone else dipping in with him."

School. Homeschooling, but school all the same. Anita felt a bit of warmth in her cheeks. Embarrassment. Technically she had been homeschooling Cruz as well, but she was no teacher. Mostly she set him up with educational channels and books and helped him when she could. It was a slow process, and most definitely flawed.

"Thank you," she said quietly, self consciousness creeping in. "Are-- are you sure? Kinda feel like I'm mooching, here," Anita laughed weakly.

Shepard snickered, taking the last of his fries. "Don't worry about it. I'm sure Rhede wouldn't mind the company, even for an hour or two, and Gran lives on that stuff. Tickles her to be needed. Gotta say, though, this’ll teach Cruz to send y’off on a lunch alone."

"Aw, hah. Alright, thanks, let me know when might be a good time." She still looked a little worried but smiled despite it. Shepard managed to placate her enough and she nodded, returning both hands to her milkshake. It was about half gone, along with her fries and burger. How long had they been here so far, just chatting? Shep was already done his burger and was just picking at his fries by now.

Unease crept in quietly and Anita remembered why, besides lack of time, she often neglected to hang out with her friends on her own; somewhere along the way, she felt like she was boring them.

"Sure, I'll send you the particulars. Check yer phone tomorrow, I'm sure Vivi'll call you gushing about it all for half an hour. If you've got texts, you'll get a bunch of 'em in half-French 'n everything." He grinned, shaking his head. "Put yer foot in it this time, y'did, getting more involved with the us. Gonna be hard to shake us off now."

If there was unease, Shepard was oblivious to it. He sat relaxed, his shoulders down and his long legs out. The waiter came by to check on them, and the Aussie nodded and smiled at him, not asking for the check or for anything else.

Shepard's enthusiasm about the situation was certainly reassuring. It didn't completely set Anita at ease but it damn sure helped. She smiled and laughed, "Listen to you. Like that wasn't my plan all along." She enjoyed both of their company, Vivi and Shepard were both pleasant people, it was honestly a treat to talk to either of them.

She smiled at the waiter, as well. The fact the bill hadn't been asked about was noted, so Anita refrained from asking for boxes just yet. She was surprised at the size of the burger and resolved to finish it later but, if Shepard wasn't hurrying things along, she didn't want to either.

Shepard opened his mouth in faux-shock, lifting his eyebrows. "Dastardly! Clever thing!"

He took another sip of his milkshake, prodding the melting ice cream and stirring it into the melty goo. "Tell me this. Does Cruz have any good friends? Raevans he likes a lot?"

Anita smirked and blew a raspberry.

"Mm, let's see... He's very fond of one named Prajna but they don't get to see each other often. Ethiriel he gets along with very well. He likes Zul, he likes Meli... There really hasn't been anyone he's disliked." She hunched forward against the table and pressed the side of her hand to her mouth. "Eiry, Iorek, Zurine..." Anita furrowed her brows. "I'm pretty sure he considers them all his friends, but... now that you mention it, I can't say he has a best friend..." Neither did she, really.

Shepard snickered. "Zurine -- yeah, this is the point in time where we start seeing less of her. Rhede had kind of a romance going on with her for a while, but I don't really know what happened there." He paused, scratching the side of his face. "I see Reks every week, although lately he's been a bit taciturn. Growing pains, I think. The Eth girl, she's the blind one, right? Rhede took her to the opera a bit ago, she seems like a good girl."

His snicker turned into a laugh. "PRAJNA, I remember that name! Rhede accidentally hit her in the face with a baseball the first time they met, ages ago. Her guardian's cute as pie."

"Yeah, poor thing. I'm not so good in the heat, either, but man--" Anita gave a soft whistle and fanned herself. Her brows lifted curiously, then settled back down. Raevans and romance, she couldn't really figure, especially with someone like Cruz. He didn't seem interested at all in the relationship aspect of kissing. In fact, it perplexed him beyond measure. Other raevans probably had different ideas on the matter than any of the guardians, too. "Aw, tough luck, Reks," she mewled, only to close her lips tight and nod. "She is. That was nice of him." Poor sweetleaf needed the R & R of an opera, what a nice idea.

Anita's mouth opened and her eyes widened at Shepard, which rounded back into a grin and then a sympathetic gasp. Just as Shep couldn't help but laugh at her scare with Eiry, Anita covered her face with her hands and let loose. "Oh no, that's awful!" She settled after a moment and dragged her hands down to uncover her eyes. "Ahh-- yeah, Namini's a sweety. Is Praj a girl? I had no idea."

Shepard laughed as Anita did, her laughter infectious. The waiter came by again as they both laughed, setting a box down beside Anita's plate and clearing away Shepard's, but the Australian could do little but just nod at him through his breathy laughing. "It was pretty rich, he yelled 'fly ball' and everything, but it just made Prajna look up -- hit the poor thing in her ego more than anything, I think."

Her next question made him pause. He could recall Prajna in his mind, but he never really noticed until that moment how androgynous the frei really looked. "You -- you know, I didn't really ASK. I guess she -- he -- could be... I don't know." And he laughed again, this time a bit more helplessly.

Anita gave the waiter a quiet 'thank you' through her and Shep's laughter. "Aw man," she leaned against the table and hid her face in the cradle of her arms, shoulders and back shaking. After a moment she picked herself back up and dove back to her shake, leaning over to sip on it while gathering the remainder of her burger and fries in the box. "Mm, yeah. I was never sure... Felt kinda rude to ask so I just left it alone," her own laugh was as helpless. She always stuck with referring to Prajna as gender neutrally as possible and that seemed fine.

Shepard scrubbed both his hands through his hair, the look on his face bright and faintly embarrassed, like someone making an unfortunate discovery. "I never even really thought about it, if I'm honest. When Rhede was first born he looked a lot more delicate, y'know, very fair and bambi-like. He's grown into himself a lot more now, but that with the pink really threw some people off at first. But then he opens his mouth and there's no mistakin' the voice."

"Yeah? He's got a deep one, if I remember right," Anita smirked and gestured to her throat. "I don't think anyone's been mistaken with Cruz... He's pretty throaty. Sometimes he sounds a little hoarse. Only thing I can think of that might throw people off is how he ties his hair, but-- that seems awfully silly."

Shepard shook his head. "Nah -- the gender-thing weirded Rhede out a while; he couldn't really grasp the concept of a gendered color for a while. But Cruz seems pretty..." He waffled about the word choice for a moment. "Dudely, hair or no. Why, does he braid it or something?"

"Mm, I think most of the raevans have trouble with a lot of our conventions-- got to agree with him there, though, that's always been silly to me." Anita closed up the box and set it aside, then rested her arms across one another. "Oh, no. He, um-- he uses ribbons. Has a whole collection, actually. All kinds of colors for every occasion." She snickered and squinted playfully, "Dudely, huh?"

Shepard grinned and lifted one eyebrow. "Figured it was the most apt description. He seems dudely." He paused, started to say something, then pulled it back. "Ex-- you know what, screw it. Real men can wear ribbons all they like, sure."

The waiter returned with a faint, patient smile, a small black folder in his hands. "Hey guys, everything alright? Would you like to see a dessert menu?"

"Guess he is, hah," she shrugged. It was interesting hearing another take on Cruz, especially just from first impressions. "Yeaaahh, that's right they can. He really likes them, I dunno what it is."

Anita gave a soft 'oh' at the waiter's interjection, barely having noticed his approach. Maybe they were overstaying their welcome. "No, thank you, I think we're good," she patted her box and smiled, glanced at Shepard, "Unless you want anything else? This was really good, by the way," she noted to the waiter as if it were a trade secret, wanting to smooth things over a little in case the staff had grown impatient with them.

"Glad to hear it! I think we have some of the best burgers in town," said the waiter charmingly.

"Naw, I'm good -- just the check, then, if you've got it," said Shepard, fishing for his wallet in his back pocket as he spoke.

The waiter's hand hovered over the small black folder. "Split or no?"

"Naw, I'll get it -- here." Shepard held out his credit card, not leaving Anita any time to argue as the waiter took it and, promising to return soon, oiled away.

At the same time, Anita dug for her wallet and had it out before Shepard denied the split. Her questioning "no" came out quieter than intended and was easily overlooked. "Wait, I--" The waiter was already gone. She sighed and grinned at Shep chidingly, leaning against the table edge and tapping a corner of her wallet against it. "I'm gonna get you. You won't even see it comin'."

"Big words, little lady, big words," said Shepard, taking the moment to take his sunglasses off of the table and slide them onto his face. He grinned boyishly, becoming more earnest. "You can get me next time if you really want."

She grinned harder at being called 'little lady', narrowing her eyes with almost devious intent, but it soon melted away. Anita wasn't devious at all and she couldn't fool anyone to the contrary. "I'm gonna," she asserted, swiping her wallet back off the table and into her rear pocket in a swift motion, "And I wanna."

Having lived with deviousness for years now -- Vivi could sometimes lead Shepard to believe she was part demoness -- the look from Anita only pinged Shepard as endearing. It brought a grin to his face. It was nice to see Anita, miscommunication or not.

"Well, great. We'll figure things out with Cruz: I'll send you the lesson times and whatnot and we'll see how we can figure it out, yeh?"

The waiter returned, setting Shepard's card and receipt in front of him, and the man quickly tipped and signed accordingly, slipping his card back into his wallet. He shut the folder, waiting for Anita to rise before he did.

"Yeah, thank you! I'll be looking forward to that." Anita scooped up her box, careful to hold it closed just in case.

She half rose from her seat, eyed the remaining quarter of her milkshake, and leaned down to finish it off. No use wasting a damn good shake. "And I'll let you know when I'm free to pop by here again -- if you want." Anita hid her uncertainty well, but the fact Shepard had been the one to suggest it in the first place made her more at ease.

"Yeah, just call me or send a text." Shepard stood, making sure he didn't leave anything on the table, and then leaned in to give Anita a short hug. "Probably best to do the plannin' one-on-one the next time, though. Tell Cruz he doesn't have to take it on himself, yeh?"

Anita hesitated -- or, rather, paused -- at the hug before catching up with herself and giving Shep a one armed one in return. It ended with a light pat on his back and she was all smiles after it was done. "I'll talk to him about that. This was cool, though, thanks for coming out."

"My pleasure," said Shepard, taking a step back. "You take care."

It was Thursday, April 10th, and not a single one of Cruz's attempts to reach Ethiriel's guardian since the end of March had been answered.

He tried to be patient.

Leo seemed like a busy guy, and the time the four of them had lunch together he seemed distant, but he knew – he could tell – that Leo liked being around Anita. He liked talking to her. He liked looking at her. He even took pictures of her.

The fact he hadn't even sent a single 'hello' in response caused a strange reaction in the frei, the surfacing of an emotion he was still highly unfamiliar with: Desperation. Each message sent was deleted immediately after. At first, he tried to address Leo as generically as possible to guide the man into responding similarly. That way, Anita might not guess that there was a prior message sent and a conversation could grow naturally.

As days turned into weeks, his patience wore thin. Cruz's attempts grew more aggressive. By the 8th, he'd dropped all pretense. Still nothing.

That was why, now, he floated in the apartment with a cordless phone to his ear while no one else was home. Tango was padding anxiously around the front door, wanting to walk, but Cruz intended to get this over with.

It seemed to ring for an eternity. Leo's voice finally reached his ear and caused the frei to stiffen.

”Hey.”

Cruz clutched the phone with both hands and hunched over. With wide eyes and a gaping mouth, he took a breath and readied himself to explain the situation. He just wanted them to hang out, to have some fun, and maybe mention that he knew Leo found her pleasant – kissably so.

”Uh, this is Leo. You probably don't need me, so...”

”What--”

All of his breath released into a weak whine. He did need him! That was why he called!

”I guess you're looking for Ethiriel. She's not here, so call–“

His heart felt like it dropped to the floor. A cold wave washed over his rune. Nearly a month had passed since he and Anita were made aware of Ethiriel's situation and yet Leo still had this sorrowful message. This wasn't right.

”Sorry to waste your time. Good luck getting in touch with Ethiriel.”

There was a short silence following the beep. Cruz didn't say anything and the only sound on his end would have been Tango's anxious panting and nails on the wood. “Sorry” nearly passed his lips, but his thumb pressed the off button before he could even clench his teeth.

Once Anita was home and her phone free, hooked up to the charger all by its lonesome, Cruz sent one last message.

Cruz delicately placed the phone, now void of any incriminating evidence, onto the couch side table. His eyes were wide and fixed to the back of Anita's head while she slept, her hair out of their braids and falling everywhere. The longer he looked the less he was sure that it was the back of her head he was seeing and not just her face wrapped up in bundles of curls. That thought only made what meager heat he had stored in his body retreat, so he did as well.

Noon came sooner than expected and Cruz still hadn't prepared any sort of explanation for Mordekai's arrival. Anita got out of bed around ten o'clock, roughly twenty minutes after the text exchange. Cruz anxiously eyed the phone, expecting some haphazard response, some call for directions, anything that would make this entire ruse fall apart at the seams.

Meanwhile, Anita went on with her morning completely oblivious. Her phone stayed on the couch side table while she ate her toaster pastry. It remained silent as she loaded up a quick side-scroller to play. Even after she put away her games and retrieved her headphones to start work on the pile of dishes in the sink, nothing gave even a hint that Mordekai was on his way. Except, perhaps, for Cruz's fidgeting. He tried to hide it by giving attention to Tango. The dog picked up his nervousness and whined, which just made Cruz more paranoid as he wracked his brain for some explanation, some excuse to make this work out right.

There was no going back now; Mordekai was nearly here, if he left shortly after they said their goodbyes. The frei drifted onto the balcony. Part of the parking lot was visible down below, cut off by the tourist side of the boardwalk then a full stretch of beach toward the ocean. The sky was clear, the air was salty, and seagulls called out as they flew by.

Normally he would be basking in the scenery but the croc was a nervous wreck. His only comfort was that Anita was in the kitchenette with her ears covered, singing into a soapy dish brush. Her fists against the counter top nearly made Cruz's heart stop until he registered it was to the beat of a song.

Did Mordekai remember how to get to Anita's apartment? He thought so. He left without checking MapQuest prior, though, so the worry only came to mind after the first half of the trip. He would've asked Duncan if he wasn't busy with his morning routine. He figured it would be fine.

For the most part, it was. His memory of Gambino managed to surprise him at how lucid it was by the time he exited the highway. He took the long way toward Lab 305 and took what he remembered from there to find the apartments, which wasn't bad at all. When he checked the car clock before he left, it was roughly 11AM.

He wasn't overly fond of car rides with only himself, much less for more than fifteen minutes at a time. He stretched out his arms and opened his palms up to collect some of the ocean breeze, yawned, and did a once-over of the complex by looking around the area.

This was the difficult part-- which building did she live in? He studied the apartments with his arms rested on the roof of Duncan's small car. It took a few minutes of staring, but he remembered the view from Anita's apartment, which loomed over the coast. From there, he played pick-and-choose by memory of floor levels and aisle numbers and how many doors they passed to get to Anita and Cruz's residence. If he couldn't find it, there was always the idea of calling out Tango's name loudly.

Or calling Anita for help-- but that only came to mind once he reached where he (probably) needed to be. He stared at the door and studied the number in front of it, shrugged, and knocked on the door a few times. He stood back and waited, hands in his pants pockets with one looming over his cellphone just in case.

Immediately, the knock at the door was met with a thunderous bark.

Cruz jolted. He had taken to perching on the sofabed, his presence quieting down Anita's singing to a low harmonious mumble. Claws dug into the arm of the couch, eyes wide and locked on the door. Tango barked until he sniffed at the bottom of the door, then took to pacing and yelping. The frei's eyes darted to Anita, whose back and attentions were turned entirely away from the scene.

Then Anita's song ended. She glanced over her shoulder to see Tango scuttling about in front of the door. Cruz's nails nearly pierced the fabric.

”S'up, bud? Mom can't be home yet,” she chuckled as she dried her hands on the small towel held by the fridge's handle.

She moved toward the door, completely unaware of the frei pushing himself up from the couch in a frenzy so he floated nearly a foot off the bed while clinging to the furniture. His jaw clenched, both eyes wide with horror, but he couldn't say anything. It was too late. This was going to crumble before it even went anywhere because he was too stupid to think of a reason, any reason Mordekai would be stopping by.

Anita paid more attention pushing Tango back from the door than to who might have been behind it. She peeked into the peephole, leaned back, peered closer, leaned back again, then stared at the dog. She bent down to wrap an arm around Tango's neck before opening the door, on one knee looking up at Mordekai with a confused smile.

Hey,” Anita laughed. Cruz collapsed onto his chest.

Mordekai's smile widened immediately when hearing Tango through the door, and he was almost certain he was at the right place. He couldn't help but laugh when he heard the yelping-- "Oyeyi, pup, s'gonna be okay!"

The blond blinked down at Anita. "Hey, Anita! An' hi, Tango," he laughed in return, then bent down to one knee to greet Anita and Tango both. He idly scratched Tango behind his ears, then grinned at Anita, "How ya been? Enjoyin' the nice day out t'day?"

A thought came to him then-- Cruz! He craned his neck up a bit tilted his head to the side, curiously. "That jolly green giant wit' ya today?"

In her arms, Tango stammered all the more. His tongue went wild as soon as he caught Mordekai in his sights, paws fumbling against the wood floor and nails clattering as he struggled against Anita's hold, but as soon as the man got down on their level he was placated and the mutt set to work on slobbering up Mordekai's beard.

Anita let him go when Mordekai had Tango suitably distracted, as well as the entrance blocked. No run away puppy through the apartment halls today. ”Hi!” she scooted back, giving the two some space to get reacquainted. ”Uh-- been good! Haven't been out yet but, yeah, weather's nice. Got the windows open.”

Cruz crumpled so far down against the couch that only his eyes were visible over the arm, like a real croc. At least, that was what he hoped. That unmistakeable head of green stuck out like a sore thumb, especially with the high ponytail on top.

As soon as Mordekai made mention of him, Cruz shot out from his hiding spot. Again, he clung to the arm while floating over it, and again his eyes were wide and teeth bared. ”Yes!” Anita blinked at him with as much confusion as she'd shown Mordekai. Cruz forced a wide smile that nearly closed his eyes.

"Pff!" Mordekai laughed and scrunched his nose a bit as Tango began licking his beard. He tilted his face slightly away but scratched under his jaw and around his back, chest, belly-- he made sure to keep Tango perfectly occupied and loved on while looking toward Anita. "Oh! Windows're good, at least!"

Mordekai was a modicum concerned that Anita didn't seem to be anywhere near intent on leaving for coffee. Did she not want to? Did he not receive a text of her's about a change of plans? Either way, he was grateful that she was receiving of his arrival nonetheless, and he was happy to see that both Anita and Tango were happy and well. He raised his brows at Cruz's sudden response, though, but seemed more amused than confused by it. It was easy seeing past Anita and at the croc.

"Oh-- 'ey, guy! Sorry-- you tired?" his smile softened, and he glanced at Anita, "Hope I din't interrupt a nap or somethin' of his..."

Mordekai hesitated. His energetic scratches and pets for Tango turned into idle ones the more worried he grew. He offered Anita as apologetic a smile as he could, though, and quietly piped up: "Ah-- are you-- good t'go for coffee...?"

”Ha-hi--” Cruz managed to calm his smile down to a more natural state. He shook his head while attempting to settle down, lowering himself to rest his chin on the sofa arm while letting his own arms dangle off its side and just barely brush the floor.

Cruz opened his mouth to say more, offer Mordekai a proper greeting, speak out against his concern for the nappydile he was assumed to be, but the words all caught in his throat. His breath did the same as Mordekai brought up the topic he was fearing most.

Coffee.

Anita blinked down at him and Tango. Cruz's nails practically embedded themselves into the side of the couch. ”Uh...” His rune and heart were pounding a mile a minute. ”Sure! Let me just get my shoes.” Suddenly Cruz felt like his entire body was made of putty. Anita turned from Mordekai to get ready, but the frei caught the perplexed stare she was trying to hide. The look said it all: did he really come all the way out here, unannounced, for that?

The frei slid himself back out of view onto the bed as he watched Anita pace around the apartment, gathering up her shoes, a hoody, her wallet, keys – and the phone.

”There's a cheap one close by, if you wanna walk.”

How the hell did this work?

Mordekai gave Cruz a sympathetic quirk of his brows. It was clear that Cruz was... anxious? about something, but he figured it was due to being tired and woken up by a surprise guest. He kept his attentions on Cruz, his smile fading to a small frown as he grew more concerned. Did he need to say sometihng? He certainly didn't know Cruz to be a shy Frei.

And then Anita said yes. Mordekai blinked back at Anita, temporarily surprised, but nodded nonetheless. "O-oh-- okay!" When Anita turned around to grab her things, he looked down at the floor. It felt an awful lot like he was stringing her along with something she changed her mind on. He glanced back at Tango and offered him more scratches behind his ear in thought.

And then Anita came back. Mordekai looked back up, still kneeling to effectively pet and hug Tango. He wasn't quite sure he wanted to let go just yet, but he stood up from his knees and stood while leaning forward, one hand still idly greeting the puppy.

He looked over at Anita, now eye-level with her. "O-oh-- oke! Walkin' might be nice-- ah-- I have the car wit'me, too, if y'wanna drive, whatever y'wanna do..." he hesitated, "Sorry if I caught ya off-guard or somethin', dunno if you had other plans t'day or not."

Tango was nothing but receptive to Mordekai's continuous attention. Every few pets and scratches were rewarded with a thank you kiss, slobbery tongue trying to get at the man's face. His tail was all a twitter against the floor and Tango kept trying to stand up, only to sit back down a second later, closer, like he was inching for Mordekai's lap.

The hoody was wrapped around her waist for now. She wasn't really sure she would need it, given the weather, but it being April there were plenty of cold ocean winds to be had and the sky might cloud up in an instant.

”Walkin's fine with me, I've barely stretched my legs today.” To emphasis, Anita put all her weight on one leg and looked down at her sneakers, the other leg lifting lazily while her arms stuck out for balance.

His concern was noted by Anita and Cruz alike. While the frei curled up into a tight ball from it, Anita laughed and shrugged. ”Ain't got s**t goin' on today.” Cruz managed a weak chuckle from the couch. ”Oh-- hey, you mind finishing up the dishes for me while I'm out?”

Cruz's head poked up again to stare bewildered at his guardian. He adjusted his expression as soon as Anita's brow creased. ”Will do,” he assured her, ”Ah... Have fun!” Cruz lifted himself up a bit more to smile at both of them.

His behavior was definitely strange. Considering Gambino's weather patterns while getting into the full swing of Spring, maybe it was affecting him.

”You gonna be okay?”

”Yep!”

”You sure?”

”Yes.”

Anita lingered a few moments more. Mindlessly, she rolled her keyring between her fingers. ”Okay,” she smiled, but couldn't shake some of her uncertainty until she turned back to look at Mordekai. Tango was trying to force himself, bouncing just a little to nose at Mordekai's chin. Anita scoffed and wrapped her arms around Tango's middle, then slid the dog away easily on the wood floor. ”Divorce court!” From there, she practically leaped over the dog and shimmied past Mordekai into the hall. ”Go go go!”

Mordekai laughed at Tango's attempts to hop onto his lap-- he had to keep eye-level with Anita, now, but his doting led to the blond leaning gradually more forward. He was practically at his tipping point by the time Anita responded, which led him to chuckle.

"Walkin' it is, then." He raised his brows at Anita's demonstration and laughed before resorting to kneeling again. He wrapped his arms around Tango and tried to keep his thank you kisses mostly to his cheek and neck while looking over at Cruz. He upturned his brows a bit and smiled a little wider at the Frei-- Cruz was definitely spacing-- and slowly stood back up. A farewell from the croc was enough to get him grinning.

"Thanks, man! 'Ave fun at home, you two!" he watched bemusedly as Anita and Cruz confered between themselves. He would feel more than blessed if he could ever speak on that level with Duncan's Raevan-to-be.

Mordekai's eyes widened curiously when she looked toward him and Tango. The fact that Tango was licking all over his face didn't come quite a surprise, though the weight of it only hit full force when Tango reached his chin. He crooned his face to the side and chuckled. "Love you too!"

He managed to stand up when Anita helped separate him and Tango. He staggered a bit to the side and laughed while wiping his face on his sleeve-- by the time he looked back up, Anita was already behind him and in the hall. "Go?" he asked; he laughed while glancing at Tango and Cruz one last time, "Oh-- go! Gogogo! See you guys later!"

With that, he bolted off.

Cruz's eyes were as wide as saucers as Anita was suddenly so enthusiastic about the trip. She got a head start on Mordekai, who seemed to be almost as taken aback. Once Anita was out of sight and no longer holding Tango, he was quick to try and follow but Cruz acted fast and left his couch perch to wrap an arm around him, as well as shut the door.

”See you!” he managed to shout before it closed fully. Tango gave one last wail before turning his affection onto the frei. Cruz sputtered and tried to lean away, limiting the dog's licking to his chin and neck. ”I know, I know--” he managed an exasperated chuckle and settled onto the floor. Tango soon grew bored of this position and left him to get a drink of water. Cruz just laid face down on the floor and stared at the gap beneath the door for several minutes.

”I did it...” Cruz whispered flatly. Now all he could do was hope Anita or Mordekai wouldn't bring up the string of texts before. He had no more control.

Misdirection

This wasn't working.

Well-- it was, to certain degrees. His initial goal of getting Anita to spend more time with her friends as a complete success. In truth, he couldn't be happier about that situation. On the other hand, a secondary objective formed and was not being met in the slightest.

Her interactions with Shepard and Mordekai, though private, were certainly favorable. Neither of them resulted in any change in Anita's behavior. After spending time with them she was equally sunny eyed. David was a different story that still ultimately ended in failure, worse than the others. Cruz couldn't be sure where Anita stood with the man, whether they were friends or David thought more of their connection than Anita did. Reading her on these matters was exceptionally difficult and asking outright lead to ambiguity or deflection.

The croc felt like he was being thwarted at every turn. Working on this situation strictly out of the apartment certainly made it more difficult. Though he had taken the time to get all of Anita's male phone contacts from her cell onto a private slip of paper, asking them outright over the phone was suspicious and lead to confusion. Texting when she was home was more viable but highly dangerous; Cruz had to constantly make sure he wasn't being monitored and that he cleaned up all of his evidence. Even then, there was always the looming threat of someone, anyone, bringing the messages up with Anita.

No, these methods couldn't be trusted anymore. But what, then? His list of viable candidates was shrinking quickly. The frei was growing increasingly desperate and impatient. Why was it that humans were so intent on complicating things?

It struck Cruz then, as he hovered in line at the mall food court, that a good deal of these unspoken rules, these lines people dared not cross, encompassed existing relationships. Was it a misguided courtesy? Whatever the case, a new avenue opened up to him and made his rune thrum with delight.

As soon as he gave Anita the drink she requested, Cruz perched upon the fountain adjacent the game store. The constant trickle of water behind him was soothing, giving a cool atmosphere to the mall that was easily heated by the sun through the skylight and hundreds of moving bodies. People came and went through her store at an inconsistent rate – all manner, shape, and size. The frei watched a man and a woman depart with a child squealing eagerly about their purchase. Children and younger people were frequent, many older women who were easily identifiable as mothers, but the most common visitor he found were male and just around Anita's age group.

One corner of Cruz's mouth creased. Green eyes narrowed in observance, ever vigilant of the details around him. If he found himself staring too intently, the croc gave attention to his nails. Occasionally Anita would smile and wave at him between customers and he was quick to lose any visible scrutiny.

Even those who passed by the store were under his gaze. Possible candidates walking by, every which way. Never before had the mistletoe raevan been aware of so many opportunities.

Cruz rose from the fountain's side as a tanned man in a t-shirt passed by. Jeans, sneakers, similar to Anita's own preferences. The frei followed him silently a few moments, wanting to get out of view of the store before any sort of engagement.

”Excuse me,” he mustered a rumble over the surrounding crowd.

The man didn't pause in his step but turned his head, glancing for a source.

”Yes. Hello?”

This time Cruz reached out, which must have caught in the guy's peripheral. He turned halfway and stopped where he stood, hands in his pockets. Cruz ignored the confused look and obvious perusal the candidate was giving him.

”Hi?”

His his hair was a bit messy and a chestnut brown, eyes a murky grey blue. There was a faint amount of facial hair at the sides of his jaw but otherwise he was clean shaven. His jeans and shoes were scuffed, the shirt sporting symbols he didn't recognize. Would any of these details matter or appeal to Anita?

”Hello. I have a question.” Cruz brought his hands together, fingers lacing.

”Uh, okay. You know there's an information desk--”

”Yes. It isn't a mall question.” His target's stance stiffened. He needed to get this over with before putting the guy even more on edge. ”There is someone... Can I show you?” Cruz turned enough to point toward GameDepot while keeping eye contact. ”She works there.”

”She?” There was an obvious uncertainty in the man's voice but the fact Anita was a girl at least seemed to catch some interest.

”She, yes. She is--” Cruz grimaced, searching for an explanation that wouldn't send him running, ”--looking for a date. You seem good. Can you look and see if she is good too?”

The man's eyes widened but he followed where Cruz was pointing nonetheless. For a moment they stared at each other, Cruz's gaze constant while the candidate's faltered.

”You're kidding, right?” Cruz drooped.

”No. Very serious. She is pretty and smiles nice. She laughs a lot.”

He scoffed. Silence fell but Cruz continued pointing at the store – and he kept staring. While the man leaned back and preferred to look at other things – his feet, the ceiling, other patrons – until finally locking their eyes again.

Instead of any verbal affirmation, the man just quirked a brow and pointed in the same direction. Cruz nodded and dropped his arm. He hung back while the guy walked to his new destination in the complete opposite direction. Cruz waited, just out of sight of the store, and watched as the man peeked inside. He lingered longer than Cruz would have liked.

”Yeah, okay, she's pretty cute. But what, she's looking for anybody?”

”Yes. Sort of. It is kind of a--” Cruz squinted, trying to remember the term from one of Minerva's shows, ”--blind date?”

The man did some squinting of his own.

”Do you want to?”

He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, leaning back to glance at the store entrance. ”I guess. What's the catch?”

”Catch?”

”What's in it for you?”

Cruz's brow furrowed anxiously. ”Just want her to find somebody.” For some reason, this made the man laugh.

”Yeah, okay. Asking can't hurt, right?”

The frei smiled and sank down, shoulders relaxing.

”Blind date... so don't mention you?”

Please.

He was given a thumbs up and the man was on his way.

Cruz waited a moment after he disappeared into the store before moving. One foot, two, then all the way back to the fountain. Inside, he saw the man taking time to look around the store shelves. There were customers in line and he was waiting for Anita to be approachable.

When the time came, he rested his elbows on the counter and smiled at her. She smiled back. Then he spoke. Her smile waned. So did the man's. They talked briefly; Anita shook her head. The man leaned away from the counter and nodded before exiting. Once his back was turned to Anita and his eyes set on Cruz they narrowed darkly. The frei's nails tried to dig into the stone of the fountain as he leaned back.

”My a**,” he spat, then quickly turned to dissipate into the crowd toward his original destination.

Cruz folded and lowered himself on the fountain edge. He let his fingertips drag through the water, tracing shapes of drowned coins.

He had to keep trying.

Solicitation, Please!

Cruz bumps into Justin at the mall and tries to seek his advice.

Take A Number
[IM RP with Rookeries]

Over the past few weeks, a sense of deja vu followed Anita through work. She couldn't quite pin point when it started and the feeling was far from pervasive, coming and going with no discernible pattern. The sense of familiarity was off putting and resulted in Anita taking more breaks than usual, at least when Dutch was her active manager. Holly was another beast entirely, and the elf hardly sympathized with Anita's plights.

After all, what could be so bad about getting male attention? Even when it was completely inappropriate at the workplace, never mind the fact it was distracting from her job and an annoyance on a personal level.

For whatever reason, like several years ago when the mistletoe first arrived, Anita found herself at the center of attention. It came in small waves, just one or two guys overstepping their bounds at first. That wasn't unusual anyway, especially if the were aware of the previous situation. It became noticeably more troublesome when upwards of five would come in throughout the day. Strangely, not all of them were asking for kisses; some were rude and some were polite, some wanted to lock lips but others offered lunch or complimented her smile.

This last one wasn't been so pleasant. He was almost a caricature, sporting a short sleeved button up and a matching pinstripe trilby. When he walked up to the counter without anything in hand, she hoped beyond hope he was going to ask for pre-order information or that he wanted to renew his membership before shopping. She wasn't that lucky.

Customer: -leans against the counter with one arm and smiles-

Anita: -smiles- ”Hi, how can I help you?”

Customer: -holds the smile for a few seconds too long before speaking- ”Can I get your number?”

Anita: -smile firms- ”15480.”

Customer: ”Huh?”

Anita: “My employee number.”

Customer: -laughs and shakes his head, leans further forward on the counter- ”No, darling, your phone number.”

Anita: -leans back, keeping eye contact and her smile tight- ”Can I help you with your game selection today?”

A customer lines up next to the one currently speaking to Anita. He sighs to himself and scratches his auburn hair while looking out at the entrance of the GameDepot store, then rummages through his pants' pocket to look at his phone to check for any texts. He's relatively plainly dressed, but is clean-cut; the thing that stands out the most about him is the shirt he`s wearing and tattoo bands around both of his wrists of two Spanish phrases. He has a few games in his hands, all brand new, and looks generally disinterested in being in the store until he overhears the discussion going on between Anita and her current customer. He pinches his brows together and side eyes the customer, clearly not impressed. As if to keep himself from speaking up, he pulls the sunglasses off from on top of his head and puts them on his shirt collar, scratches at his earrings, and steps a bit further away from the counter.

Customer: -incredulous smile, laughs- ”No, I don't think so. GameDepot doesn't really suit my tastes.” -raises brows, smirks- ”So, are you playing 'hard to get' for a reason?”

Isaac: -squints at the customer again- “Dude, if you're not even buying a game, why are you even here?”

Anita: -doesn't lose her smile but creases her brows and narrows her eyes- -is about to speak when another customer takes the initiative-

Customer: -turns his whole body to look at Isaac and leans back to size him up- ”The door's right there, it wasn't a long trip.”

Anita: -lowers her voice toward Isaac- ”I'm sorry, I'll be right with you.” -turns back to the other customer- ”If you're not intending to purchase, could you please clear the line, sir?”

Isaac: -glances toward Anita to acknowledge her speaking to him, but goes back to speaking to the customer; raises his brows at the explanation- ”So it shouldn't be too hard for you to walk back out, then.” -he sets his games down on the counter so Anita can scan them- “Can you stop wasting everyone's time and let me buy my games?”

Customer: -scoffs and doesn't move from his spot, watches him plop his games down and rolls his eyes at the selections- ”Sure, if that's what you want to buy.” -looks at Anita and shakes his head with a dull smirk- ”Anyway, you don't have to keep up the act. I know you don't have a boyfriend.”

Anita: -as soon as the games are available, she nods and gets to work on scanning them- -offers Isaac a small smile to silently thank him for his patience- -looks squarely at the other guy when he spouts that off- ”Excuse me?”

Isaac: -scoffs at the remark and elects to ignore the customer for a bit, then immediately turns back toward him- “Okay, wow, <******** off. I'm serious.”

Customer: -lifts his brows smugly at Isaac and turns back to Anita, taps his knuckles on the counter- ”Your customer is using foul language at me, I'd like to make a formal complaint.”

Anita: -leans away from the counter and cranes her neck to peer at the back of the store at her appointed manager- ”Dutch, can you give me a hand?”

Dutch: -raises his hand and nods to acknowledge Anita, then politely parts with a customer he was speaking to by the Wii U display- -heads behind the counter beside Anita, standing a head taller and twice her width- ”What's the problem?”

Anita: “Code Green.”

Dutch: -eyes snap between the two customers under furrowed brows- ”Which one?” -Anita gestures to the one without any games on hand and Dutch rests his palms on the counter, leaning forward- ”Are you harassing my employee?”

Customer: -raises his brows and shakes his head to eagerly defend himself- ”No, sir, but this customer here was using foul language on me just now. I believe your employee just lied to you?”

Isaac: -exasperated, he scoffs and looks away a moment- “Wow, okay.” -looks back toward Dutch- “I'm sorry for swearing, but all this guy has been doing is making passes at your employee nonstop. It was pretty hard to ignore, and I've been waiting here for a while trying to buy these games.”

Anita: -tries hard not to roll her eyes and instead looks to the side and pinches the bridge of her nose-

Dutch: -glances at Isaac as he explains, then back to the other customer with no change in expression- ”That's two, now. Were you intending to buy anything?”

Customer: -finally takes his arm off the counter- ”Two what?”

Dutch: “Strikes. If you're not purchasing, then you need to get out of line. I believe my employee was clear about that before?” -glances at Anita, who nods- ”Step out of line, allow my employee to do her job, and stop bothering other customers.”

Customer: -steps back from the counter and pushes up his glasses, frowns- ”I would like to file a written complaint about this locale. Where can I do that?”

Isaac: -smirks- “Up your a**?”

Dutch: -tries not to smirk and keeps staring the customer down- ”Seeing as you dodged my question, I'm understanding that you had no intention to buy anything. That means you aren't a customer and I'd appreciate it if you left my store.”

Customer: -looks dumbstruck at Dutch, then turns and scoffs at Isaac without even acknowledging Anita anymore- -bumps shoulders with Isaac as he storms out-

Anita: -sighs and slouches, watching him leave- ”Finally.”

Dutch: -puts a hand on Anita's shoulder- ”Did you need anything else?” -glances warily at Isaac-

Anita: “No, thank you.” -smiles and moves back to her spot at the counter- ”I got it.” -Dutch nods and pats her arm before heading back onto the floor to try and find the customer he left- ”Sorry about that.” -resumes scanning Isaac's games-

Isaac: -doesn't acknowledge the customer as he bumps shoulders with him, but looks back toward Dutch and Anita, then back at his games; shrugs at Anita- “It's whatever. I hate dealing with fedoras at work too, and they don't even flirt with me. Do you deal with this BS a lot?”

Anita: -smirks while scanning the next game- ”If you can call that flirting. Yeah, I don't know why. Didn't happen for a while, at least nothing like that. Never got it in Durem.” -stacks his games back up neatly and taps the bottoms against the counter so they're nicely aligned- ”Do you have a Depot card?”

Isaac: -shrugs- “True. I shouldn't have given said s**t stains that much credit. It might be something in the air here?” -shakes his head- “I don't. I'll pass on making one today, though.” -takes out his wallet from his pocket to retrieve his credit card-

Anita: “Mind control devices in the hats.” -nods- ”Alright, no problem.” -gives Isaac the total, then gets his card swiped through and bags his games- ”And that'll do you. Thanks for being an easy customer.”

Isaac: -stifled laughing- “That's terrifying.” -takes his bag and nods toward Anita- “Yeah, no problem. I hope you don't have to deal with too many more assholes today.” -waves once with the hand with bag in tow; he turns, pulls out his phone, then leaves-

Coffee Tally
[IM RP with Rookeries]

April 25, Friday - Kawana Lane

Summers were hell. Near the beginning of the summer was the worst, especially, because they were still neck-deep in gathering up the spring harvest, and they had to prepare everything for the onslaught of farmer's markets cropping up across the county. Hartline Farms was used to the ones in Durem, sure, but Gambino was a risky idea that Stephen was still pretty shaky on. Still, they set up a few agreements with areas here and there-- there was Birch Street near the coast, 4th Street closer to the southern piers, and Kawana Lane somewhere in western Gambino. Fortunately, all of their start-and-end times occurred at different times. The one on Kawana Lane started somewhat earlier than the others, in early April rather than in May or June. There was no arguing it, though, since it was the last month of grouper fish season, and lobster was cropping up again in the market.

Mordekai and Eric were the only two entrusted with running the Hartline booth for Kawana Lane, because they'd stuck around the longest in the farm, but it was still a piss-poor idea, as they already felt pretty understaffed by the time they'd gotten to the site, as the street was far wider and their booth far larger than the ones they were used to in Durem. Fortunately, the one thing they did have plenty of was time-- they arrived at noon for an event that began at 5. In the end, there wasn't even much of a point in that, since they weren't allowed to set up until 3.

Eric decided to make the most of his time in Gambino, which meant ditching Mordekai and leaving to have lunch with his daughter. Mordekai decided not to ask about going with, but it meant either sitting around with Stephen's truck alone or going elsewhere. He spent a while being lost on ideas, until he decided it best to look through his phone to see if anyone he knew was in Gambino. Anita was one of the first names that popped up on his list-- though initially hesitant, he called her.

Mordekai: -waits for Anita to pick up while leaning against the side of the truck-- looks uncertainly at the ground, since he isn't sure if this is a good idea-

The last Friday of April, Anita was slotted for a closing shift. That meant she had to get in at 4 o'clock and deal with her secondary manager. It also meant that, until that time, she had no intention of doing anything but relaxing and enjoying herself. By the time Mordekai called, that meant sitting on her butt and playing games.

When the phone vibrated, she almost didn't register it. Only when the one ring tone she managed to apply to the flip went off, the Goldeneye 64 main theme, did she pause and head over to it. Cruz was leaning over the table to stare at the name lit up on the screen.

Anita: -presses her palm flat over Cruz's face and picks the phone up, then flips it open and holds it to her ear- ”Hey.” -lightly pinches the frei's nose and avoids a couple sissy slaps to her arm- ”How are you?”

Mordekai: -perks up when Anita picks up; looks up from the ground- ”Oh-- 'ey!” -laughs and pushes himself up from leaning against the side of the truck, stands upright- ”Doin' fine, how are you? Ah-- sorry to call ya, but-- you busy?”

Anita: “I'm good.” -walks back to her seat and pretzels her legs, holds the phone to her ear with her shoulder so both hands are free to resume her game- ”Nah, it's good to hear from you. Um--” -glances at the clock- ”I'm free for a couple hours, then I have to head to work. What's up?”

Cruz: -fidgets a little after Anita sits back down, then quietly settles himself on the opposite end of the sofa bed so as not to interrupt the conversation-

Mordekai: -chuckles- ”Das good. Thanks for dealin' with me.” -smiles a bit, then shrugs, spins around on his heels to look at the area he's at- ”Ah, oke... ah-- I don't wanna take up all your time befo' you start work, but 'm actually in Gambino right now, uh, ye'know the K'wana Lane farmer's market at all...? It don't start 'til 5, an' I was wunnerin' if you were down to get some coffee real quick...”

Anita: -listens attentively without breaking her gaze from the television screen, keeping up with both fairly well- ”I know of it.” -realizes that might have sounded more flat than she intended with the multitasking, so pauses the game again and gives Mordekai her full attention- ”Kawana's not too far. It's actually between my place and the mall, anyway. Want me to meet you down there?”

Cruz: -immediately locks eyes with the back of Anita's head-

Mordekai: “O-oh-- 'kay, shoulda guessed ye'knew, sorry-- oh--” -scratches the back of his head and looks around, then at the truck- ”No, ah, I can drive up near your place, ain't a problem, ah-- you're okay with coffee, then?”

Anita: -sounds more upbeat and pleasant, like usual, once she's not distracted by the game- ”Yeah, that's fine! That'll give me time to finish this level. Think you're about ten, fifteen minutes away? I'll have my shoes ready this time.”

Mordekai: “Oh-- okay! Yeah, think so.” -laughs- “T'throw at me? No, I gotcha. See ya soon.”

Anita:No! -laughs- ”Alright, see ya.” -closes her phone and gets right back to the game-

Cruz: -floats a little higher atop the mattress, cranes his neck to continue peering at the back of her head as if her hair will tell him everything- ”Nita?”

Anita: -absentmindedly hums in reply, then double takes at Cruz- ”Oh, sorry-- Mordekai's in the area and we're gonna grab some drinks in a little bit. I'll be an hour at most. Did you want to come to work today?”

Cruz: -raises his brows and smiles- ”I'll stay with Tango. Just wanted to know what was happening.”

Anita nodded and returned to her game. As she hoped, the level was finished with quite a few minutes to spare before Mordekai's arrival. Cruz mostly lounged with her as he had before until she got out of her pajamas. With them both prepared to greet Mordekai with no anxiety, Anita decided to use the peephole to judge Mordekai's distance from their door just enough to let Tango into the hall before he could even knock.

Mordekai greeted Anita, Cruz, and Tango in full. He made sure to greet Anita and Cruz properly before kneeling down to say his hellos to the wolfhound. With Anita prepared to leave, though, his salutations were shorter than before, and Mordekai walked surer through the apartment than he had before.

The weather today was just as breezy as two weeks ago, but it was a little sunnier, and there was no hint of rain anywhere along the horizon. Mordekai stared out toward the beach as he pushed the door open for Anita, then stared back in to inspect the line at the register. There were only a couple of people ahead of them.

Mordekai: -bemused smile toward the wait line- “S'it always this quiet 'round here?”

Anita: “Lunch rush either just ended or hasn't started.” -grins and hurries her step a little- ”Don't wanna find out if it's the latter.”

Mordekai: “Oh, guesso.” -laughs and looks behind him toward the Starbucks entrance, then follows Anita to the line- “Man, yeah. Coffeeshop lunch rushes are always so bad... you ever been to Queen's Cup?”

Anita: -chews lightly on the tip of her thumb nail while looking at the desserts and sandwiches in the display- -shakes her head- ”Mm-mm. Is that one really bad?”

Mordekai: -stuffs his hands in his jacket pockets while studying the coffee menu, then looks over at Anita with a light smile; nods- “Yeah, it's kinna this big coffee place over in Aekea, was smack dab on commerce in east side, so alla rich people went there for lunch. Lines th'length of this strip, right? My brother used t'work there an' he hated it.” -laughs- Anyway, sorry-- y'know what you're gonna get?”

Anita: “Oh, damn.” -laughs and side steps to follow the line when the next person steps out- -picturing Johan working in a coffee shop was difficult, but she certainly couldn't blame him for not enjoying it- ”Not sure if I want to get a sandwich or something. I probably should, all I've eaten today was half a bowl of cereal a couple hours ago. How 'bout you?”

Mordekai: “Yup!” -laughs along with her, then shrugs at the question; glances at the food display, too, and hums- “I gotcha... mm, dunno, a sandwich sounds really ********' good...” -smiles wryly at Anita- “Think they hidin' soup anywhere?”

Anita: -pokes her tongue out and stares more intensely at the display when he does- ”Hmm... Yeah, it does. Their sausage and egg thing is good, I think I'll get that and the frap.” -raises her brows- ”Maybe if you ask really nicely about their 'secret menu'.”

Mordekai: -nods and hums at her choice, still staring at the food display-- laughs and changes his tone; holds up one hand like he's holding a coffee cup, points at it- ”Scuse me! Suh! Dis chowduh I axe fo's s'all black an' runny, I cain' eat dis! Gimme my money back!”

Anita: -lights up and laughs, covers her mouth with a hand so it doesn't travel far in the quiet shop- ”My god, look at that-- They burned your water!” -side steps again, then realizes she's in front of the register; freezes, laughs, then rights herself and makes her order-

Mordekai:Waduh! Swindluhs ain't even gimme my soup!” -steps closer to the register and chuckles, pipes up behind Anita after she makes her order- ”'Scuse me, on ya secret menu, y'got any soup?”

Anita: -stands just off to the side near Mordekai while he's ordering to tuck her card back in her wallet- -her face goes red and she fumbles putting it in her pocket when he asks about the secret menu, tries to stifle her laugh and shakes her head at Mordekai-

Barista: -looks really unamused but resigned, used to this- ”Sir, we don't have a secret menu. Would you like to order anything we do have available?”

Mordekai: -upturns his brows and laughs- “Aw, really? 'Eard you did from someone? No, I'm playin'-- jus' gonna get an Americano t'day, a big one.” -he rummages through his pants pockets to find his wallet to pull out some cash-

Barista: -pauses-- then cracks a smile- ”Sorry, thank you. You'd be surprised how many people aren't playing. Americano comin' right up.”

Anita: -covers her face with a hand and hangs her head, trying to keep her laughter quiet- ”You had me going, too--”

Mordekai: -laughs and offers up his cash- “Worked in food service enough t'know secret menus're a pain in the a**, yeah? 'Ey, thank ya.” -once he receives his change, he walks over to the brew bar and glances at Anita; smiles wide and chuckles, leans a little closer and speaks quietly- “They think they fooled me this time, I just gotta dig deeper...”

Anita: -manages to calm down her embarrassment and flushed cheeks when they get to the brew bar, then has to quickly cover her mouth again from laughing- -lowers her voice too and grins- ”They can't hide their soup for long. Should know to watch out for pirates in Gambino plundering their secrets.”

Mordekai: -nods toward Anita, looking as grave as possible- “Das right. Th'long kept secret of the farmer's market. Now that ye'know, I gotta kill you--” -holds up both of his hands, fingers extended- ”Beneath these hands're two metal hooks. I'll give ya ten seconds to run.”

Anita: -raises yer brows and purses her lips- ”They better hurry up with my sandwich, then. I will die for that sandwich--”

Mordekai:Au contraire, mon ami, will y'still think that when I do this--” -tugs at his hand like he's slipping off a glove; stares at his hand incredulously, tries to pull at it again; glances at Anita, then back at his hand- “...Gimme a second--”

Anita: -grins and narrows her eyes smugly, whispers- ”Malfunction...”

Mordekai: -shakes his head and tries to tug at his hand again once or twice more, then shakes his head and wags a finger at Anita- ”Jus' you wait, man, jus' you wait... -faces toward the brew bar again- “Gonna get an upgrade an' gonna get 'em claws that do the thing, ye'know, like Wolverine.” -smiles wryly toward Anita- “Pirate Wolverine.”

Anita: -keeps grinning and shakes her head slowly, unconvinced- ”I'll be waiting the rest of my life.” -gives a low giggle and faces forward as well, Mordekai's drink arriving first since he didn't order anything extra- ”Then you gotta make your hair do the thing.” -holds her hands up to the sides of her head like swoops just as her drink comes over; lowers her hands and her head, mouth stuck somewhere between a pout and a stifled grin, and takes her drink-

Mordekai: “'Scuse me! More like seven days, yeah?” -laughs and takes his coffee, thanks the barista, and walks back over to Anita; pops the cap open to let some of the steam roll out while watching her little demo, then laughs- “Th'weird thing dat makes'im look like he got cat ears? Is kinna cute, but ain't nobody be able to pull it off 'cept that guy. Was'his name? Pouty Cigarbrows?” -looks up, like he's trying to glance at his hair; not that it's a problem, given his bangs. Puts the cap back onto his coffee cup and smiles, walks toward the sugar and milk station once Anita gets her drink- “Hair too curly anyway.”

Anita: -waves her hand at him and pffs in disbelief before rifling through the straw dispenser- -gets one for herself and then another small handful for him- ”I'm sure Mr. Cigarbrows has a team of stylists fixing up his curly cat do for hours. -peeks over the brew bar and bends her knees a few times- ”God, I'm starving now that I thought about food.”

Mordekai: “Oh-- thanks!” -happily takes the straws from Anita, laughs- “Whatchu mean it ain't natural? -looks over at the brew bar, too, smiles- “I getcha... oh, would you be interested in anythin' from the farmer's market fa'real, though? I can drop it off later no problem.”

Anita: -smiles and nods when he takes the straws, then scoffs- ”Doubt it.” -keeps bouncing casually on her heels, bobbing with her knees while waiting for her sandwich to finish warming- ”Oh. Thank you! Um-- depends on what's there.”

Mordekai: -chuckles, then watches the brew bar as Anita's sandwich is being warmed; shrugs, tilts his head to the side, and glances toward the ceiling-“Dunno 'bout K'wana 'specially, but there's pretty much anythin' you want there. Hearin' a lotta stuff about seafood, uh-- crop, produce, ye'know-- gardenin' s**t, sometimes crafty stuff, ahh.. soaps? But prolly no laundry detergent. Turkey legs the size of my arm.”

Anita: -hums and looks at the ceiling- ”Seafood's always good... but we have plenty of that around here as it is.” -laughs- ”Might need you to hook me up with a turkey leg before I gnaw my own off.” -sighs contentedly when her sandwich is presented and quietly thanks the worker, then as last time leads Mordekai towards the door- ”If I wasn't working today I'd just come around myself. Is it today only?”

Mordekai: -laughs- “True 'nough! Still, I could prolly getcha somethin' for free. Dependin'. I'll see 'bout that turkey leg--” -smiles when her sandwich is ready, then walks behind Anita out the door; raises his brows- “Yeah? Oh-- ah, nah, it jus' started t'day. Every Fridays 'til now to-- six weeks from now? Mid-May? 5 'til 9.”

Anita: -holds the door open for him and then heads to the small collection of patio tables and chairs- ”Thanks. Are you sure? I don't want to get you in trouble or anything.” -sits and hums, takes a sip and closes her eyes at the cold- ”Cool, okay. I won't know what my schedule's like for next week until Sunday but if I have off or don't work afternoons any of those Fridays I'll pop on over. Are you gonna be there all of those Fridays?”

Mordekai: -nods- “Yeah! Don't worry, we go 'round tradin' s**t alla time after the market's all closed up. Turkey leg only thing y'want?” -smiles a bit wider- “Great! K'wana's pretty big for a farmer's market. Tango might not like it 'cause it's pretty crowded, but Cruz might, yeah?” -takes a sip of his coffee and stops in front of an empty table, nods at Anita mid-sip- “Mhm! I gotta be. S'our first time up in Gambino.”

Anita: “I think so. Especially if I can manage to get up there myself.” -smiles and takes her seat- ”Yeah, probably! I know mom would dig it.” -sips her drink and nods, goes quiet a moment to process- ”That reminds me-- did you have a chance to renew your license?”

Mordekai: -laughs- “Sounds good! Hope you get to.” -sits down after Anita does and takes another sip; raises his brows at the question, laughs sheepishly, and nods- “Uhuh-- actually-- 'bout that-- Duncan din't know 'bout it, either, sooo...”

Anita: -blinks a little wide eyed at him mid-sip- ”You know--” -laughs- ”--I kinda figured he wouldn't let you drive around like that if he knew. But it's all good now?”

Mordekai: -laughs and nods, takes another sip- “Yeaaah... no, everythin' is good now. He said t'say 'ey next time I saw you, though, so here's that!”

Anita: -smiles and gives a single affirmative nod- ”Good. Aw, well hey! Do we have confirmation for the fourth?”

Mordekai: -smiles a bit wider, then breaks into a grin; nods- “Hell yeah! S'gonna be fun. Dunno who else is gonna show up still, but-- bettin' on Farrer, at least.” -laughs- “He likes you an' Cruz.”

Anita: -adjusts in her seat, a bit more attentively facing Mordekai with a bright smile- ”Farrer does?” -laughs- ”We like him, too. Your friends are nice.”

Mordekai: “Yeah! Farrer. Or Ben, that's his real name.” -smiles- “Yeah? He wasn't cranky when y'met him? 'M glad-- they all gotta kick outta you two last time-- widdat lamp an' all-- still got her runnin' upstairs, by the way!”

Anita: -laughs and sips- ”Nah, not cranky at all.” -glances to the side while thinking back, just to confirm, and nods- ”Made more of a splash with them at New Years than Thanksgiving, huh? Aw, good. Is she treating you right?”

Mordekai: “Good! Don't gotta kick his a**, then.” -chuckles and shrugs- “They got to know you an' Cruz on New Years a li'l better, yea, s'pose so-- 'cause Thanksgivin' was so busy, ye'know?” -grins- “Right as rain.”

Anita: -relaxes and slouches in her seat, legs stretched out straight- ”Damn right.” -smiles- ”They got me to make you that big plate of food.” -scoffs remembering that and shakes her head- ”Pickin' on both of us, I think.”

Mordekai: -laughs at the hazy recollection becoming a bit clearer- “Yeah, prolly-- forgot who made me that huge plate, but it was you, ah?” -hums, glances up, and nods- “Yeah, an' you helped prep the sweet potatoes wid Cruz an' Jill an' Jerri. Did you have fun widdat?”

Anita: -grins and nibbles the tip of her straw between sips- ”Guilty.” -glances over and nods- ”Yeah, that was nice. I think they had a lot of fun, too. Thanks for letting us do that.”

Mordekai: -laughs- “Gotta thank you for goin' easy on me, least the plate din't topple over! They woulda made it do that.” -glances back over at Anita, takes a sip of his coffee, smiles wider- “Glad t'hear it-- and 'course! Thanks for helpin'. Wouldn'ta been able to finish everythin' otherwise.”

Anita: “Jeez.” -laughs and looks back out toward the beach- ”That was a really nice dinner. I'm glad we got to be there.”

Mordekai: -hums-- he stays quiet for a while, until his phone vibrates. He digs through his pocket and flips it up, stares at it for a while to read his text, upturns his brows; looks sheepishly up at Anita- “Ah-- sorry, but d'you know where Meadow Street is near here...?”

Anita: -stays quiet too and just enjoys the view and her drink until he gets a text; glances over at the question, then looks out across the strip- ”Yeah, it's a couple streets down near Bayfront Court, they've got that stupid Bar-A-Kuda drink stand right off the side of the pier.”

Mordekai: -glances over at where Anita's looking- “Near Bayfront, got it--” -laughs- “s**t, okay, that name-- alright, thank you, sorry... think I gotta run soon, guy I'm runnin' the booth with today's tellin' me to come by an' see his daughter.” -smiles- “I'll come by 'round quarter after 9 with your leg, yeah?”

Anita: -scoffs and grins- ”You can tell it's a tourist trap when they get that punny.” -glances back and pauses slightly, then smiles and nods- ”Aw, okay. I hope you guys have fun. Thank you for that, again, and for dragging my butt out.”

Mordekai: -shrugs and laughs- “S'kinna cute, though...” -nods- ”'Course! Thanks for comin' with. Nice seein' you. Think I'll walk down, s'a nice 'nough day.” -stands up and smiles, waves toward Anita- “Good luck at work! Tell Cruz an' Tango an' Minerva I say hi!”

Anita: -covers her face and shakes her head, laughs anyway- ”Yeah, nice seeing you too. Same to you!” -lifts her hand and smiles- ”I will! Say hi to Duncan for me!”

Mordekai: -grins, nods- “Will do! See ya!” -turns and leaves, humming as he goes-

May 9th, Friday -- Farmer's Market

The turkey leg had been retrieved, as promised, and gone over well. Mordekai didn't have time to stay long but he was greeted and thanked by all in the household. Minerva offered him some coffee before he left, for the long drive. From there, Anita was eager to check her schedule but unfortunately the first week of May she was slotted for another afternoon shift. Thanks to some discussion with Dutch, Anita managed to switch the following Friday from the afternoon to morning. When Anita told Minerva about the market's schedule that day, her mother decided to play hooky entirely. It was rare she ever took off as it was, and they could all use a day out.

After work Anita took Tango for a run across the beach to get him good and tired so the pup could just sleep while they were out for a few hours. Minerva left the TV on Animal Planet for him just to provide a little optional stimulus, and his bowls were filled. The lucky pup even got some ice cubes in his water.

The market was big and certainly had a variety of selections. Cruz marveled at everything, 'ooh'ing and 'ahh'ing and trying to touch. Anita gently pulled him away from several displays, particularly the food. Minerva was all over the gardening, crafts, and soaps, as Anita predicted. Cruz opted to float with her for the most part, as the things she was checking out were certainly touchable. Anita was far more interested in the food and, now that she was here, seeking out Mordekai to say 'hello'.

Anita: -already been there nearly a half hour and hasn't managed to spot him through the crowds; gives Cruz a quick smooch on the head before announcing her temporary departure to look for their friend- -tries to wave carefully through the crowd, not wanting to bump or touch others, and trying to peer over shoulders and heads for that familiar hayseed fluff-

The Hartline farms booth was at the end of the farmer's market strip, for sure, but it was one of the biggest produce stands available there. There were an assortment of fruits and vegetables, and a few people were carrying off paper-wrapped casings of meat off to the side. The musicians that played live at the center of the street still carried their tune loudly through here, and the smell of cooked food from other stands wafted idly through.

Staffing only two people for this was a terrible idea. It showed on the first week immediately, and three other workers were there manning the booth, which was enough to accommodate the curious onlookers that were ogling the produce. Mordekai stood near the edge of the booth, closest to the vegetables, looking tired but talking to someone wholeheartedly nonetheless. The customer had two children with them, a boy and a girl, who looked as familiar as ever to Rebecca and her kids. He waved the customer off as she left with a bag of turnips.

Mordekai: -manages to catch someone familiar off the corner of his eye-- when he recognizes them as Anita, he smiles a bit more enthusiastically and waves toward her; tries to speak past the noise- “Anita! 'Ey!”

Anita -attempting to peer over a large group's shoulders and into one of the nearby stands when she thinks she hears her name over the noise; looks in the general vicinity, misses Mordekai at first, then doubles back and quickly returns the wave- ”Hey!” -sidles through the crowd more quickly now that she has a clear destination- ”There you are. How's it going today?”

Mordekai: -laughs pleasantly when she walks over, waves again once she's closer- “'Ey! Yeah, we're stuck in the back, sorry-- s'goin' fine, busy... how are you? Din't know you'd be able to drop by!”

Anita: -laughs and shrugs- ”It's okay. I'm doing good. Cruz and mom are here, too. They're--” -turns to look over her shoulder and gestures vaguely- ”--somewhere. What all you got over here?” -steps closer to the stand to get a better look-

Mordekai: -looks overhead at where Anita gestures toward, chuckles- “Yeah? They enjoyin' 'emselves? Oh!” -smiles and shrugs down at their produce, motions toward them- “All sortsa s**t. Lotsa seasonals. One thing that's goin' quick right now are our pluots-- those're grown special by Stephen, though, none'a us got anythin' to do with'em.”

Eric: -having been next to Mordekai this whole time, he glances over and scoffs- “Give her a bite of the Flavor Princes if you want to show them off! Or Dapple Dandys are all out.”

Anita: -nods- ”Think so. Cruz wants to touch everything and mom's all up in the garden s**t.” -raises her brows and leans over when Mordekai starts explaining- -glances to Eric, then laughs back at the selections- ”Princes and Dandies, huh? Lots of boys over here.”

Mordekai: -laughs- “Cain' blame'im-- oh! Your mam into gardenin'?” -glances between Eric and Anita, chuckles and scoots to walk behind Eric- “Then getcha a** outta the way, lemme get 'em.”

Eric: -nods at Anita- “Whoever came up with the name for this s**t, man, they have a screw loose. You a friend of Mordekai's?”

Anita: -chuckles and grins at the two men's exchange and tucks her hands in her pockets, nods to Eric's question- ”Yeah, local one.” -gestures at Mordekai while he's digging through for the fruits- ”We can't really garden out here but she likes plants. Got some potted ones we're keeping on the balcony since the weather's been good.”

Eric: “Ah, I see, I see. My daughter's the same way-- she has an apartment full of potted plants. Dozens of them, but no field to tend to. I tell her to get married and settle with someone with a big house for that s**t, you know, but she never listens.” -clicks his tongue and moves to the side when Mordekai walks back to Anita, one pluot in hand-

Mordekai: -wipes the pluot clean with his palms; he looks at it, ready to hand it to Anita, but hesitates and glances up; laughs- “Ah, sorry, din't even ask you if you wanted one, ah--” -shrugs and holds the pluot out toward her- “Wanna pluot? S'a plum an' apricot baby.”

Anita: -gives Eric a smile and shrugs- ”Guess I can't blame her, it's nice out here.” -laughs when Mordekai brings the pluot out and second guesses himself, holds her hand out- ”Yeah, thanks, I'll eat the baby.”

Mordekai: -chuckles and hands it to Anita- “Don't get baby juice all over y'self.”

Eric: -he checks the time with his phone and nudges Mordekai on the shoulder- “Hey, go take a break, huh? Your huge a** is cramping us up behind here.”

Mordekai: -scootches a bit more to the side and upturns brows at Eric- “Wha? But--”

Eric: -looks incredulously at Mordekai, then gestures toward Anita- “Your friend came here to visit you and you're going to stand there? C'mon. Get me a coffee before I fall over.”

Josiah: -leans over to glance at the Anita and co, waves his hand- “Did someone say coffee? Please get me a ******** coffee.”

Anita: “Get baby juice everywhere.” -grins and rolls the pluot lightly between her palms, looks up when Eric nudges Mordekai- ”Oh--” -glances to Josiah then laughs and shrugs at Mordekai- ”If they're gonna die without it.”

Mordekai: -smiles sheepishly at Anita- “Only if y'wanna, sorry...” -glances back at Eric- “You want me to take a break or y'jus' wantin' some coffee? Thinkin' you're all sly.”

Eric: “What, would you go if I told you anything else? Go. Get me something strong. Lots of sugar.” -points very gravely at Mordekai- “And no ********' milk.

Josiah: “Get me an iced latte! Mm, triple shot. Oh! Spike it. -laughs-

Anita: “Yeah, why not?” -laughs and shrugs, gives the pluot an investigative sniff before trying a bite- -covers her mouth and scoffs, both from the juice and and the other guys- ”How much for this?”

Mordekai: “Oh-- dunno, wanted to make sure y'wern't busy or wantin' t'catch up with Cruz an' your mom an' all that--” -raises his brows and smiles when she takes a bite, laughs and shakes his head- “Free of charge! Don't worry 'bout the price.” -he looks behind him, grabs his jacket off of a fold-up chair, and walks out from behind the booth to put it on, smiles at Anita- “Want anythin' else while we're here?”

Anita: -laughs with her mouth closed and finishes her bite- ”You keep giving me freebies... Thanks.” -looks around a little while he grabs his jacket and hums- ”Not sure. I'll be right back here after we get the coffees, so we'll see then.” -speaking of her mom and Cruz, though, takes out her phone and shoots them a quick text about the situation and that she'll be right back- ”Let's see if we can find them on the way back so you can say hi, though. If you want.”

Mordekai: -laughs- “S'nothin'!” -rolls up his jacket sleeves and walks next to Anita, nods- “Gotcha. Les'go, then, cain' keep Eric waitin' too long-- be back with your coffees, yeah?”

Josiah: -Eric makes shooing motions at Anita and Mordekai to see them off, while Josiah waves back at them- “Be back soon before another rush!”

Mordekai: “Will do! And I ain't bringin' you back spiked coffee!” -looks back at Anita after she's done texting; grins and nods- “Sure! It'd be great to see 'em.”

Anita: -tucks the phone in her pocket and starts walking with Mordekai through the crowd- ”Last I saw them they were really enjoying themselves. We wouldn't have stopped out here if you hadn't mentioned it, so thanks.” -smiles and takes another bite of the pluot, mumbles quietly- ”I've never had one of these, either, they're really good...”

Mordekai: “Ah, yeah? Good to hear-- no problem, an' it's pretty near your place, glad you gotta chance to check it out.” -smiles lopsidedly at Anita- “Never woulda heard of 'em if it wern't for Stephen, but he's a real big fan of weird li'l hybrid fruits. Last year it was tayberries.”

Anita: -nods and enjoys another bite, then laughs- ”What the hell are tayberries?”

Mordekai: -laughs along with her, holds out his palm like he has a handful of berries on his person- “Tiny li'l things y'get when you mix a blackberry widda raspberry. Ain't so hard to grow but they're hell to harvest, ye'know, so Stephen stopped growin' 'em 'cept for himself...” -shrugs- “But I can prolly pawn a few off 'im. Duncan likes makin' jam widdit.”

Anita: -peers over at Mordekai's totally empty palm- ”Oh, they sound cute...” -smiles- ”Does Duncan make a lot of jam?”

Mordekai: “They are! If I get 'em, I'll try t'show you a few. Kinna purple.” -grins and nods- “Alla time! Not as much as he used to. Lotsa jams, lotsa pies, he tol' me 'bout livin' in England an' all that a long time ago. You ever try any of his cookin'?”

Anita: “Aw, sure.” -looks down at their feet while walking and eating- ”Hmm... I'm not sure. Did he cook at all for New Years or Thanksgiving?”

Mordekai: -shakes his head- “Nah, no cookin' from him 'round then, I don't think-- man, y'gotta try it sometime, he taught me everythin' I know! Barely knew what a vege'ble was 'til I met 'im.” -laughs- “'Less it's s**t y'can find at a diner.”

Anita: -looks surprised- ”Huh. You cook really well, so I didn't even think--” -laughs and shrugs- ”I'll have to ask him for something next time, if he's up for it.”

Mordekai: -laughs- “Aw, you're too kind! Nah, I was useless wid'jus' 'bout everythin' back in the day.” -grins- “Yeah? Duncan really likes cookin', so he'd prolly be down! Jus' don't got as much time to.”

Anita: “I'll bet. He's been pretty busy lately, hasn't he?” -hums as she finishes up the pluot- ”It'll be nice to see him anyway, even if he doesn't feed me.” -laughs- ”Hope things are going okay.”

Mordekai: “A li'l bit! A lot... he's been tryna teach again. S'been a hurdle for him...” -grins and nods- “Yeah! Yeah. Think he'd feel the same. I'll tell him soon as I see 'im.”

The trip to Starbucks and back was woefully congested, but the deed was done, and they drank their fill while walking back to the booth. Mordekai walked around with the intention of finding and saying hello to Cruz and Minerva both, and when he did manage to see them-- the croc especially was pretty easy to find-- he waded through the crowd to greet them. He offered up what he could to Minerva concerning some free produce, and who to talk to around Kawana that he knew, if she was at all interested.

He saw Anita off at the Hartline booth, and Eric and Josiah both gave Anita as much thanks for the coffee as they did their co-worker. They offered her a few more pluots, given that she ate all of the one they gave her, because anyone who associated with farmer's was good enough for free food on their terms. Mordekai saw to it that Anita wasn't heckled about running more errands for them. They did, however, advertise that the 4th Street farmer's market was to begin soon, and Kawana was going to end next week-- they did hope to see her again. Mordekai did, too, but only if it wasn't too much trouble for her.

When he told Duncan later that day about Anita wanting to see him again soon, and about his cooking, Duncan was more enthused than he had been in a long few weeks. He was to prepare a meat pie for whenever Mordekai was able to see her again-- Duncan wanted it to be before July 4th, and he knew he wouldn't have much time until then to see her himself-- for her and her mother to eat. If only he could bake kisses into pies! It was certainly something to mull over.
