Ksrugi's handed flew to his face and he screeched in pain.

"Agh! Son of a b***h! That hurt! Ow!"

Ksrugi wiped his cheek with a hand and saw that it was covered in blood. He hiccuped and then looked up at his assailant.

"What a homecoming."

His eyes scrutinized the boy's features and shook his head. The boy looked like Retloc, but there were some differences. He didn't have Ret's battle wounds. And that little kid has just beat the crap out of K's face.

"Who are you?"

The child realized in that moment, for the first time, that he didn't remember his own name, and let this newcomer know this.
"...I guess it was from fright or shock or something..."

Ksrugi gingerly moved his hand around the area where the boy had hit him. Lucky it hadn't connected with his mask. He stood and turned back to Tao.

"Tao, we've got a survivor right here. Come on in man."

Cereah watched as the Cal's face- now filled with dread and horror- turned to go to Espon City. Cereah looked away feeling horrible for being the one to reveal the bad news. I shouldn't let her go alone... but there's nothing I can do... Clutching the jacket in her hands, Cereah turned to head for the Derelict. As the girl's footsteps faded away, Cereah felt her stomach knot. I am such an idiot. Throwing the bag with the envelope and jackets behind a tree and quickly covering it with leaves, Cereah pulled out her handgun and checked to make sure she had all the ammo she would need. Putting the rifle over her shoulder, she turned towards Espon City, and against her better judgement, she headed back.

Taos shotgun and his gaze was transfixed on the window, his eyes darted from side to side until he heard the all clear from Ksrugi. Survivors- maybe it all wouldnt be in vain. He stumbled through the window, tearing his pants on the way over,
"Damn it."
The words were muttered as he turned around. The shotgun raised up to eye level once again,
"Whose the kid?"
The words seem to escape his mouth before he realised that the boy bore a resemblenceto somebody he once knew. Somebody he had once thought to be long dead. Somebody he had grieved for.

Cereah ran through the gates of Espon City and looked around. She didn't see any shadows or people at the moment, but she knew that if she wasn't consistently alert, she would be as good as dead.

Sneaking along and checking behind piles of rubble, Cereah found no survivors and many dead bodies. Hoping for better success deeper in the city where most of the people lived, Cereah made her way slowly through the streets. I hope I find someone again to back me up. I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to use this thing...

Cereah froze as she heard something move behind her. Turning slowly, Cereah's eyes met those of one of the few survivors. Letting out a sigh of relief, Cereah said, "Sir, are you okay?" He didn't answer, and Cereah decided to try again, this time speaking louder. "Hey, are you-"

She stopped as he stepped closer to her and she finally saw the truth.

He was infected.

"Tao? What's up man?"

Ksrugi cocked his head quizically and then tapped his foot. He turned to the boy and then aimed his magnum at the kid's head.

"Tell me, are there any other survivors? Anything we can salvage? Ammo? Supplies? Booze?"

Ksrugi stopped at booze and remembered how hard post apoctalyptic booze was to find. The bial they made at the base was alright, but you could never beat good old sake. Ksrugi stopped his meandering thoughts and dropped his magnum.

"You're the only one, aren't you?"

Anger fusing with rational thought, the Boy glared back down the gun barrel at the battle-scarred stranger.
"No-one else made it. Nobody ever did. NOBODY!!!"
Suddenly a memory had flooded back. His parents. Cowering before a group of Shadows...just before they....

Tears streamed down his cheeks and spit flew out his mouth as he yelled to blot out the pain.
"None of them ever HAVE!! And NONE of them EVER WILL!!!"
He slapped the gun out of his face in pure recklessness and pointed straight in the man's face.
"YOU'VE NEVER FELT THIS PAIN!!!!"

He gave a last, dry sob and leant back against the wall, averting his eyes and wiping away his tears...

Ksrugi stood there, uttering no words and then walked over to the boy, his lips distorted as if he was in pain. He grabbed the boy and pulled him up, and then pushed him against the wall.

"Are you done yet? So your parents are dead, I lost mine years ago so don't think you're the only one. And how about seeing everyone you love being changed by those sons of bitches? Have you ever had to kill any of your old friends with your bare hands, just to see the light of another day? Have you ever killed the woman you loved most?"

He stopped and his mask betrayed nothing of the workings underneath. Ksrugi let a punch fly and he hit the wall with a resounding wham. It cracked under his strength and his head was bent, his hair dangling in the air.

"You're still just a kid, you haven't had the time to know what we know. To see comrades die after facing so much together. You sure as hell aren't Retloc reborn."

Ksrugi turned his back to the boy and spoke with a certain edge to his voice.

"Stay here if you want, but my friend and I have a job to do. Tag along if you wish, but only if you can take care of yourself."

...The Boy hefted his pipe, still glaring at the man before him, slightly sobered.
"..I suppose that means I'm on my own."
With one last glance at the other man, he turned and marched out the door, to God knows what fate on the other side.

He spoke without looking back.
"We won't meet again. Don't look for me."
He laughed, short and harsh.
"Like you cared."

Thus, filled with angst and rebelling against his despair, the Boy walked off slowly...black veins pulsing madly.

Ksrugi started for the boy, but thought otherwise and stopped himself. Having a child with them would be more of a con than a pro. But still, Tao was in command here.

"What do you think Tao? Get him or let him go?"

Cal knew if the city had fallen it would not be safe to return through the open gates, but a back way. A way that she hoped those infected, and the Shadows knew not about. Loading as many rounds into her magazine, the girl rounded towards the left side of cities stone walls. Hiding in the brush and bushes around the fortress, Cal waited, making sure that no one was near by.

Taking a calm, deep breath, Cal crawled through the underbrush, her body as low to the ground as possible. She was now very thankful that she had been long ago taught in the arts of war. It felt that she had been crawling for quite along time, but there it was. Hidden by bushes, and vines, covered by leaves and dirt. A small crawl hole, big enough for an average sized person, seemed to have been penetrated into the thick stone bulkhead.

Keeping control of her weapon, its barrel entering first, Cal crawled through the hole, her emerald eyes searching the devestated scene that met her eyes. She almost wanted to cry out in horror, but held her toungue as she pulled herself to her feet. Cal brushed the dirt off her body, as she began to wander catiously towards the main streets.

Cereah

Cereah held her ground as she pulled the rifle out of its holder. "Take one more step and I won't hesitate in killing you."

The man stopped a moment before stumbling forward again. "Please, make it go away."

Cereah could see the pain in his eyes, but refused to let it get to her as she raised the rifle. She leveled the barrel with his chest, knowing she would have a better chance of hitting him there than anywhere else. "I said stop."

"You must do something!" The man sprang forward but stopped suddenly and looked behind him. "No! Stay away! Stay away!"

Cereah felt her face drain of all blood as she realized that the shadows were nearing. Kill him now, before they use him. Kill him, kill him, kill him! Cereah's trigger finger tensed as she watched the man scream in pain. "I can't kill him unless he attacks." Cereah began to walk backwards slowly, hoping that the man would be too busy with his screams to notice her. Don't make me have to kill him. Oh God, please don't...

Tao stared long and hard at the boy. His shotgun lowered as a flinch of heart ache shot into his chest.

"We take him with us."

Taos head turned slowly to Ksrugi,

"Cant leave him here. He wont lack two ticks."

Tao seemed to drift across the room as if he was dazed, or as if his mind was wandering aimlessly through some kind of insane day dream. He didnt have time to question the kid about who he was. To be honest he wasnt sure if he cared. He was certain, however, that he wasnt going to let the boy run riot around the streets until he got himself killed. That would be another thing on his list of unforgivable acts- most of which he had already committed.

Cereah kept backing away, staring at the man, waiting for any sign that he would attack. The man fell to his knees and Cereah sighed in relief. I don't think he's going to attack...

Cereah slowly slipped the rifle back into its holder and pulled out her handgun in case of emergency. Nearing a hole in a building, Cereah decided it would be best to hide in there. As she began to turn Cereah caught sight of something coming towards her. Immediately throwing her arm in front of her face, she heard a crack as a metal pipe collided with her left arm.

"Argh!" Cereah stumbled backwards as she clenched her left fist in pain and raised her handgun with the other hand. The man began to charge at her and Cereah stepped back in surprise, firing the gun as she did so.

Cereah felt her legs give out under her and never saw if the bullet hit its target as she fell through the ground into one of the many basements in the city.

Cereah felt pain shoot through her side and saw she had fallen onto the metal pipe. At least it only pierced my side slightly and didn't hit anything vital... Cereah tried to sit up, but ended up just falling back down to the floor as she became dizzy and fell into unconsciousness.
