Most of the contents of the board were in a ziplock baggie at the bottom of her closet, slowly gathering dust underneath a growing pile of shoes and discarded clothes. Every so often, Nellie would remind her daughter to use a hamper, but Tallulah had started to dread opening her closet. She’d reach in long enough to find a fresh school uniform top in the morning and then slam the door shut for the rest of the day: for all the work she and Bell had done on organizing their information, it fell short and felt empty. Tallulah had taken to diagramming on sheets of scrap paper at her desk, trying to map secret identities onto coma patients and piece together what had happened while she’d been asleep. The names Corinna Grant and Dylan Rasmussen were always at the top of her list: Queen Nehelenia and Prince Alexandros. The Parallel court. Night after night she burned the midnight oil, drinking can after can of Diet Ener-TEA (she’d switched to the lower-calorie version once she realized how much she was drinking) and trying to put together the clues right. It was wild conjecture. Pulling ideas out of thin air. Of course she had no proof, simply coincidence, but she’d failed her team but spending the whole summer out of commission, and she owed it to herself and to them to make up for lost time. Squinting in the glow of the computer screen as she trawled through news articles, Tallulah noted the time and thought regretfully about the difference a year made: a year ago she’d have gone to bed hours ago, dreaming away the night tucked safely under her puppy-and-kitty comforter. She wouldn’t sneak into Meadowview for another few weeks, and wouldn’t awaken until October. Ignorance was bliss, but then it could also get you killed. She snorted her tea at this, sending carbonated fizz up her nose. “I’m talking like a noir detective,” Tallulah laughed to herself, and crumpled up the latest sheet of paper. It was the same conjectures, made over and over again. Ideas that meant nothing without proof. She needed to call the Basterds into a meeting, to find out who had been where and seen what, to cross-reference her story once and for all with Pasha, and to just see who was still on her team. Luckily, no one from her team had been in the obituaries. No: the violence had taken her favorite teacher and her best friend, but her team remained thankfully untouched. Tallulah stifled a yawn and pulled up an email. She really needed to start getting to bed earlier, but for now she had news articles to read, a meeting to plan, and miles to go before she could sleep.

It was a brand new day, and Senshi healed fast. Tallulah was still very sore from her encounter with Uranophane and the bees – actually she sort of looked like she’d fallen out of a tree and into a hornet’s nest – but this didn’t stop her from going to swim practice like she owned the pool. She still wasn’t back to where she’d been before the coma, but between daily practices, good diet, and nightly patrols she was getting there. Afterwards she dressed quickly, dabbing her face liberally with concealer and pulling on a pair of thick tights to cover the bruises on her legs. Today was going to be her day, and there was no way anyone was going to get in her way. “Wow, Tallulah,” remarked her pink-eyed teammate, “You’re really on the ball today!” “I’ve got my second wind,” shrugged Tallulah, perching on the edge of a shower stall and wringing her hair out over the drain. “Ooh,” said her friend. “What’s got you so excited?” Tallulah shook out her hands and straightened up. “I am applying early decision to Dartmouth,” she proclaimed, “and today I am going to go and ask teachers for letters of recommendation!” It was no secret that Tallulah had had her heart set on Dartmouth since roughly spring semester of freshman year. Her friend clapped her hands together excitedly. “Oh, good luck!” she squealed. “It’ll just be Destiny Community for me, I think. I didn’t do well last year.” Tallulah winced sympathetically at her, then hurried off. First on her list of teachers to ask was Coach Fields. Surely she’d write her a good letter – after all, Tallulah had been a tireless athlete since Freshman year, and even if the hadn’t managed to beat Crystal for the championship (yet!) or she hadn’t made captain, she was still a valuable member of the team. (She told herself this. She certainly hoped it was true.) “Dartmouth,” said Coach Fields, leveling her steely gaze at Tallulah. “Why on earth would you want to go to Hanover? It’s cold there.” “I want to study pre-vet,” replied Tallulah, trying her best to maintain eye contact. “Do they have swimming at Dartmouth? It’s practically above the arctic circle.” “They have swimming,” replied Tallulah quickly. “Alright, I’ll write it,” said Coach Fields, taking the envelope. Getting her AP Government teacher to agree was easier – he knew her through Model United Nations and was, in general, a rather grandfatherly figure and happy to help. Which left one more academic teacher. Under normal circumstances, Tallulah would have asked Mr, Gordon, but this year was anything but normal and Mr. Gordon was currently quietly decomposing six feet under in Destiny City Memorial Gardens and had been for a month now. So she asked Doctor Westerman and tried to tell herself it wasn’t a compromise. She’d taken his advanced class last year and done well, and besides – she needed someone to explain that she actually was a good biology student, even if she didn’t have the AP scores to prove it. As she settled into her desk in homeroom, Tallulah opened her planner and looked over her application checklist she’d made. Essays were next. She smiled halfheartedly. A good half of her impressive experiences were things she could never talk about as having happened to her.

Tallulah Cowden's College Application Essay If you’ve seen my hometown in the news recently, it probably wasn’t for anything good. I hail from Destiny City, USA, a city which, if popular news outlets are to be believed, is ruled by warring gangs of terrorists, besieged by mysterious biological warfare trials, and is, in general, not a very nice place to live. A place where any given night a pedestrian might go for a stroll downtown and turn up dead in an alley three days later. Ladies and gentlemen, rumors of Destiny City’s demise is greatly exaggerated. We are still a regional center for arts, sciences, and medicine. Last year a koala, a chimpanzee, two gorillas, and a giraffe were born at our zoo, and the humane society opened a new, expanded facility that will allow it to reduce its euthanasia rate. The mayor’s office instituted programs to improve public transportation and reduce ozone emissions by fifty percent, and our public school system was ranked in the top twenty in the country. All these accomplishments are overlooked, however: when one mentions Destiny City, the first thing that comes to mind is its soaring crime rate. I have lived in Destiny City my whole life and will attest as soon as anyone that it is something of a weirdness magnet – I spent all last summer in a coma, which I hope will account for my missing AP scores. But the rumors that the coma wave was a biological attack are just that: rumors. In truth, no one here knows what caused it, whether it was chemical warfare, or some kind of plant toxin, or radio waves, or something as improbable as a solar flare. I remain curious, though, and while I exercise a healthy dose of caution (as many in my hometown do), at the same time I seek to keep myself informed about goings-on in my city. Despite my middle-American upbringing, I seek to be, first and foremost, a citizen of the world. Through my participation in Model United Nations, I have expanded my mental horizons and educated myself about international issues. I have learned geography and politics, and keep myself up to date on global events. A well-informed mind is one that is prepared for the twenty-first century. Through my participation in the MUN, I have also polished my leadership and organizational abilities. In the club, I represent Finland, head panels focused on nuclear proliferation and animal rights, and am also in charge of new member recruitment. Not to brag, but I am superiorly skilled in the arts of Google-Fu and Powerpoint construction. Our club took second place overall at regional conference last year, and I received third place among all Finland representatives from the tri-state area. I feel that in order to be a citizen of the world, one must first understand their context within the whole of the human race. However, it isn’t enough to simply understand the world that we live in: one must temper their understanding with empathy. I personally have always had a soft spot for animals, and since freshman year have been volunteering twice a week at the animal shelter. The work is challenging, varied, and never boring. I have done time as a receptionist, intake assistant, dog walker, kitten socializer, kibble distributor, and occasionally as an unofficial veterinary aide. This is in fact where my interests lie: I have set my sights on Dartmouth because of its reputation in both the liberal arts in sciences, a school where I will be able to continue my study of global politics while also completing pre-veterinary requirements. I hope to someday become a veterinarian, or perhaps a zookeeper, and to work in conservation, combining my interest in animals with my interest in global politics. I am ready to belong to a place that is so much more than Destiny City – while I have extolled its virtues here, the fact is that the place carries a stigma. I long to help my hometown, but in order to do so I need to leave it first, and Dartmouth seems to be the perfect place to go.
