"Possibly." Embri nodded, though deep down, she had the feeling things would never be quite the same. Still, it wasn't that bad... all things considered she had come out quite lucky indeed.
((Anyone object if we fast forward a few weeks after Chi gets to reply? 'Bri's not going to be much good until she's healed up some. ))

"It'll be alright, Embri. We gotta try, right?" Chione smiled. Whether they found him or not, she had a feeling giving up would hurt a whole lot worse. "Let's get back before Dad shows up." Trotting ahead, she smiled lightly under the morning sun. If Embri stayed with them or Embri left, it was nice having someone new around.
(( It's pefectly fine with me. Hmm, probably in between? Those awkward months where Jiyuu's voice cracks and the girls start growing hair in odd places. Great bearded ladies. ))

((Yup, especially awkward for Embri, since she's a bit older than the sibs... ah, but you'll see. wink I promise you an interesting interlude! )) Embri nodded, looking out at the seashore as the threesome left the shady dapples of the forest. "Yes... all told, I should count my blessings... I could have broken a wing or my neck in that fool flight." Lips twisted into a frown, the filly vowed silently to herself never to take such chances in the air ever again.
She looked at the two foals ahead of her and smiled. It was good to have friends again. Maybe, just maybe, this won't be so bad after all. I hope you find happiness, Lachtna, wherever you are. Shaking her head, she trotted faster to catch up with Jiyuu and Chione.

Several Months Later...
The storm-tossed filly was healing nicely, all things told. No longer feeling quite so black and blue, she had settled in with Toshiro's herd as if it was second nature. They had searched the length of the coast for signs of the filly's missing friend, but to no avail. Whatever section of beach she had come from, the storm seemed to have moved her more than a day's flight or gallop in either direction.
Dawn was still long off, but Embri's amber eyes were open, sleepless. Whisper quiet, she separated herself from the sleeping forms of Jiyuu, Chione, Kindle and Toshiro, slipping away into the gloom of night. The soft rustle of feathers was followed by the sound of a hoof scraping sand before the darkness swallowed her whole.

Jiyuu stirred in his sleep as Embri left, unconsciously sense his foster sister's absence. After all, the sleeping space was starting to grow a bit cramped with the three foals growing now, so when there was suddenly a bit more room to move without bumping into anything, Jiyuu slowly started to come to. Hm, it's still dark out, he thought to himself sleepily, trying to figure out what had woken him up.
It was only as he woke up a bit more that he realized what was amiss. Where's Embri? Slowly and quietly (so as not to wake the rest of the family) he got up and stepped outside of there small shelter. "Embri?" he whispered into the night, not seeing her around. Aw man... Just what is she up to?

Chione grumbled irritably in her sleep on the opposite side of Jiyuu. She'd just gotten ready to starfish as much as she was able on her small side of the den when she felt him move. "... warm..." She shifted her weight to lean against him, starting awake when she hit air. What's going on here? Squinting into the darkness, she could just pick out his form retreating form. "Jii?" With a broad yawn, she pushed herself up lazily.

Embri's ears flicked backwards, listening for any sound of her adopted family awakening. Only the soothing lap of waves on the shore greeted her senses, rhythm soothing on her frayed nerves. With supustitious glances over her shoulder into the gloom, the filly trotted down the starlit beach, sticking to the treeline where deep shadows hid her pale coat better. Finally she stopped, pawing the ground. The soft hiss of sand cascading through the air followed.

Jiyuu stayed where he was, looking around for any hint of which way Embri may have gone. His ears perked when his sister said his name, and he turned his head back to look at her. "Ah, sorry, Chione," he replied in a whisper. "Didn't mean to wake you. Embri's gone out somewhere." Where though he had no idea. After all, there were too many of their own footprints in the dirt to be able to tell apart fresh from old and whatnot.

Something soft and light brushed up against Jiyuu's hoof. White in the pale illumination, it was clearly not a creature but a feather... with a broken tip. It wasn't alone. Another was caught in the thornbush towards the treeline, two more floated across the sands. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From her hiding place amongst the palm fronds, Embri worked busily, looking up from time to time with a nervous expression. Couldn't slip away yesterday... hopefully everyone else is too tired to notice I'm gone.

Jiyuu lifted his hoof a little when he felt something touch it, looking down to spot the perpetrator. A feather? Looking up, he spotted another one just like it in a bush. He had missed them before due to the low lighting. "I'm going to go search for her. You can stay here," he whispered to Chione before following after the feather trail. Just why was Embri shedding so badly?
The Airin followed the trail down the sandy beach, looking for their owner. "Embri?" he called out softly, not wanting to draw the attention of anything else in the woods by mistake. "Embri, where are you?"

Pluck pluck pluck. Teeth loosened the shedding feathers, dropping them in the hole. With a golden hoof, Embri scuffled the sand around the pile with a heavy heart. Even more than yesterday... The sound of her name made the filly throw up her head in alarm, eyes rolling. Was that...? Jiyuu called again, it definitely was. Someone had noticed her midnight foray. Guiltily, she threw sand over the hole in a panic.
"Jiyuu? I'm fine, go away!"

At the sound of her voice, Jiyuu was able to locate her and trotted over to where his foster sister stood in spite of her request that he stay away. "There you are, Embri. What're you..." He trailed off as he spotted the hole she was so hastily trying to cover, a few loose feathers lying off to the side of it. Concern shown on his face. "What's going on?"

Chione frowned slightly, watching her brother go. She remained where she was for a few moments, then rose up, moving to the mouth of the den. She looked out into the night, off in the direction the pair had gone. Head tilted to the side, she debated, then looked back to their parents. Oh, they would have an absolute fit if they woke and all three of them were gone. She flinched inwardly. She'd give them a few minutes.

"Nothing!" Her voice was high and quite opposite in meaning to her words. "I told you, I'm fine!" The filly tried to put herself between the incriminating evidence and her foster-sib, looking terribly guilty all the same. Thank the goddess it's dark... my face is probably redder than Jiyuu's wing tips. Why oh why did he have to follow me out here? Hastily she scrabbled some more sand over the hole with her hind legs.

"You're a bad liar you know," he remarked, watching her hastily try to fill in the hole. "What's going on? Why are you losing so many feathers?" Was it molting time already? His wings didn't seem to be growing many new feathers at the moment, but perhaps it was different for each Airin. "And don't try to deny it- the only reason I was able to find you was cause I followed your feather trail here."
