Beaming, with every inflection of being pleased by Z'nal's grudging approval (though he must have quite the selective hearing, not to catch the threat that followed it up), Okassis seized up a mug from the second pot. "You have to try this one too, sir!" he insisted. Who knew, maybe the Candidatemaster would be the first one to vote for their unique recipe?

As fascinating as it was to watch Okassis attempt to reel the Candidatemaster in, Sovann's attention was almost immediately grabbed by a pair of candidates he had never seen before. Huuhhh. They looked like they could be cousins, or maybe even siblings or something. "Well hey there," he said, coming over to stop in front of Davian and Davril. "Why don't you come try some of our klah?" he asked, putting on his best airs. "I have it on good authority that at least one of the pots is delicious, and another has an extra special special kick. It ought to wake you right up." He spread his arm back behind him to indicate the table, quirking an eyebrow inquisitively at the twins. "Feeling up to a little fun?" he asked, grinning cheekily. Oh, it was absolutely grand that so many folks had shown up for the taste-testing! They were sure to find at least one person who liked their klah, weren't they?

When Nandeli spoke to him, Marko gave her a truly deadly look and finished the water. Her question didn't even earn a reply from him, and he simply shook his head and ignored her as he returned to the klah table. Picking up a cup from the third pot, he sniffed it before putting it to his lips, frowned at it, and then set it down while he hoped nobody was looking. He had tried klah everywhere he went, made by an impossible variety of people, some amateur some professional, but he had never had klah that smelled like fish. And he had no desire to try it now.

He moved instead for the first pot, picking up a cup and sipping it thoughtfully. He liked that one; typical klah and perfect to enjoy with a sweetroll or some other sort of pastry. He enjoyed the cup thoughtfully, then regarded the pebbles in the baskets. So it was time to make a vote, then. Hmm. Raising an eyebrow as he considered, Marko tugged on his braid, completely impervious to those around him. Honestly, though the second one had been odd, it hadn't been bad. But the first one was traditional, and Marko had to admit that he prefered flavours that weren't terribly strong.

Nodding to himself, he solemnly dropped a pebble in front of the first pot.

Astri wrinkled her nose. Secret ingredients sounded just like another way to get into trouble to her. Not that she didn't mind the occasional bouts of trouble, but she had a feeling making the Candidatemaster sick would have more severe consequences.

"I'll try and hope for the best for them. I'd like to think that they wouldn't poison the Weyr." Astri didn't trust the look on Sovann's face though. She made a mental note not to trust him if he ever served her food... And to introduce herself to him later. He looked as though he could be a great deal of fun. Okassis too, though she didn't know the name of either Candidate. But the idea of siding with the boys, and perhaps smudging off a bit of the innocence Inaari projected, made a very funny picture, enough so that Astri's lips quirked upwards as she watched with the rest.

Despite liking the klah, Z'nal didn't finish the entire cup. He knew that they would want him to taste more, and he was an older man. His bladder was getting smaller, and he couldn't stand the indignity of having to run off to use the restrooms with all the Candidates watching. That would mean losing a measure of his dignity, and Z'nal held that in high regard.

He finally broke down and excepted Okassis's offering, reminding himself that if he got sick, this would be the first Candidate he would kill. That and the other boy... His name started with 'Sov' something, didn't it? With so many Candidates wandering about, it was difficult for Z'nal to keep track.

Gingerly sipping the klah, Z'nal was greeted with a pleasant surprise. It wasn't bad... Though it was very different tasting.

"What's in this?" His voice came out still suspicious, and slightly querulous.

Kypak gave Nelioa a small, sympathetic half-smile, nodding at her words. Maybe a bad reaction to the "secret ingredient" in this special klah, after all... Still didn't explain how people before her had drank the stuff no problem, but oh well. "It's all right. Just better safe than sorry, is all... Take it easy, all right?" One hand lightly touched her forearm in what he hoped was a reassuring gesture, then feeling abruptly and acutely awkward he backed off. Catching a familiar eye in the crowd, he took the opportunity to evade the less familiar ones, and approached Marko just as he finished taste-testing.

The scents blending together from the table were, at least at first, just as appealing as they had been when he first entered... at least, until he leaned slightly over the third pot to inspect it, and caught a whiff of something foul. "All right, I can respect would-be klah connoisseurs being creative," he remarked to the Harper, "but fish? Really?" He was deeply skeptical of all three at this point, no matter how innocuous the other two seemed... and shards, being around all this klah and not being able to drink any was torture! Possible poisoning or no, his resolve was failing.

"Ah, well, that's a bit of a long answer," Okassis loftily replied to the Candidatemaster's inquiry. "The recipe's actually fairly rare. See, there's this little Hold in the High Reaches where they serve this klah - though admittedly, we might not have gotten the recipe right." Sighing remorsefully at their empty pebble-dish, he mused, "It's all that they'll drink over there - regular klah just doesn't have the kick you get with trundlebug legs, y'see...."

Z'nal's eyes widened visibly. He didn't believe that Okassis had put trundlebug legs in the klah, but there was something in it that just tasted off the more it sat in his mouth.

"Attempting to poison your fellow Candidates is a serious offense, but I'll overlook it this once." Of course, Z'nal knew the boys hadn't intended to poison anyone, but he was adding to the dramatics in a perverse sense of amusement.

"I'll see all you lads tomorrow at dawn... you'll be cleaning the latrines every day for the next sevenday. Have fun." Grinning, he strode off.

"Hey now, that's not really overlooking it, is it?" Okassis commented to Sovann - by some grace of wisdom, waiting until after the Candidatemaster had left to say it. The grin on his face was huge, triumphant. Who cared if they were getting punished? They'd gotten a good half-dozen souls, the Candidatemaster included, to drink their bug-klah. His only regret was that they hadn't gotten any folks claiming to like it! And they'd certainly accomplished their mission of distracting the Candidates from the upcoming Hatching, not even to mention meeting new faces, joking around with some more familiar ones, and having an all-around good time. A successful Klah-Off if there ever was one!
