Lorey soon found herself absentmindedly stroking his blonde hair as she made herself comfortable on the floor beside him.
"I may have been up and out at four this morning, but I know you're not fine..." she said softly. "Sleep. If you need more ice or anything, just wake me up. I won't mind."

Richard's eyes suddenly shot open. "Oh my, a lady as yourself should not sleep on the floor!" He persisted, sitting up a bit, though immediately missed the feeling of her touch.

After a few noises of exasperation, Lorey took his shoulders and tried to put him right back.
"Nonsense, you're the one battered and kicked! You need the bed and pillow more than I do!" She practically slept on the floor every night, and wasn't about to change that.

Richard grabbed her gently by the hand, trying not to be pushed down again. He pulled gently to get her to sit on the bed with him. "Please...I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing you were on the floor..." He looked her in the eye with a soft seriousness that he hadn't used in years. Unconsciously, he reached out and moved some of her silky hair away from her face, and tucked it behind her ear so he could see her better.

Lorey, too, had a seriousness on her face, one etched with a bit of amazement. The feeling of him gently pulling her hair behind her ear sent a little shock down her back, one she tried her best to conceal. There was just something she cared for so much in his face that she wasn't sure what to do or say.
"I... well... you at least can get the pillow..." she finally said, consenting.

Richard seemed satisfied with that much as he stood to give her the bed. Rubbing his neck again, he leaned down and kissed her forehead sweetly. "Goodnight..." He said sheepishly as he laid down on the floor, facing away from her so she wouldn't see his face a burning red.

Lorey just sort of sat there for a moment in a daze. It wasn't until he had laid himself down that she realized something.
"Richard," she said with a soft laugh in her voice. "You forgot your ice." Slowly she reached out, the pack in her grasp, and tapped his shoulder.

Richard leaned over to look at her before merely smiling a little, taking the ice from her with an appreciative nod. His face was still a tad red when he leaned back away, resting the ice on his forehead before realizing he was still wearing his tux. Silently, he began to undo the buttons and tie, slipping off his shirt to reveal his extremely well maintained muscular features. He tossed the shirt near what seemed to look like Deilita's. Though kept his pants, not wanting to make Lorey nervous, even though he usually slept like this anyhow. Stretching a bit he heard his back pop a few times before lying down to stare up at the ceiling

She had to look away while he was changing, though once he had settled down, she had to admire. His past with the police force must have made him like that, she thought. And yet, he had left that life, hadn't he? So what did he do that required him to maintain himself? Regardless of all the questions, Lorey set her arm up as a pillow, the other hanging off the bed.
"Remember... if you need more ice, just wake me up." Her smile was warm, reaching into her eyes as she looked as his battered, but still handsome face. "Good night, Richard."

Richard couldn't help but smile. He looked back at her with a kind look. She's so... He sighed, not being able to finish the thought without smiling. "Night..." He replied, closing his eyes as he did. Despite how perfect of a day he had with her, when he closed his eyes, just as it was every night, he saw the same beautiful face looking at him forlornly. Rose... He furrowed his brow, suddenly feeling guilty as the same, sharp pain returned to his heart as it did every night for the last few years.

As Lorey slept, her hand came to rest on his arm closer to the bed. When her mother was still alive, they shared a bed, and in the colder months had to keep close for warmth. It was a habit of hers to seek that warmth during the night, even when it had been missing for almost ten years.

Richard opened his eyes momentarily as her touch found his arm. He rolled over to his side, taking her hand in his, before hesitantly kissing it, hoping the action wouldn't wake her. He then closed his eyes and drifted to sleep, still holding her hand.

It was about six o' clock in the morning when Lorey woke up, fresh and bright. It had been ages since she had 'slept in.' The first sensation to hit her was that Richard was holding her hand. It seemed so natural to look down and see him gently sleeping. What troubled Lorey, though, was how even when sleeping, Richard still kept a look of sadness. She resolved that no matter what, she would fix that someday.
Before getting up, she kissed the pad of her thumb and pressed it against his cheek. This new affection for Richard, coupled with sleeping on a mattress so much better than the one she was accustomed to, made her feel as if she could take on the world.
But, her little section of Veratia would have to do first.
Her first task was to take a bath, in which she sprinkled little complimentary bath salts and tried her hardest not to use all of the shampoo just in case the others had the same plan.
After drying off and making herself ready for the day, Lorey left the hotel bound for what was her old room in the slums.
Once there (and after practically breaking in, as the landlord was terribly punctual about eviction notices), Lorey was hit with a wave of nostalgia. Whether she hated it or not, this little shack of a room was her home in some way. But, after resolving that it was for the best, she gathered a few items. The most important was her mother's jewelry box, the only nice thing they had in the place. When opened, it meekly chimed a tune she wasn't familiar with, but grew up with. Lorey stood at the door, eyes misty, but eventually brought herself to leave the terrible building and her old life behind.
When back in the hotel room (she had left a bit of paper in the frame to keep the door from closing and locking), Lorey set her little box down on the table. It was then time to really be of use to these wonderful people.
Several favors and calls later, Lorey had a fairly impressive spread for breakfast laid out. There was even a little package of coffee sitting on the small counter right next to the coffee pot, which was already filled with a wonderful, hot brew. Now, it was time to wake up at least Richard. The other man who had offered her a job could snooze for a bit longer. Besides, who was she to wake up the person who had every right to the room?
Lorelee tiptoed over to Richard, and knelt down by him. Still sleeping, and still bruised, she thought he looked like a grand hero. Lightly her fingers followed the curve of his cheek before resting on his shoulder.
"Richard?" she whispered. "Richard, there's food and everything ready."

Richard awoke form a strange, familiar dream, forgetting where he was. But the sound of Lorey's voice made him smile and remember. He stretched lazily and yawned. "Morning! You seem to be in good spirits this morning..." He noted, sitting up and popping his stiff back once more. He was used to poor sleeping conditions, but the floor here wasn't that bad, especially with Lorey near.

She was positively glowing once she saw he was awake.
"That was one of the best sleeps I've had in years. I even got to sleep in until six!" Lorey couldn't help but look a little concerned at his stiff back and wondered if it would help to massage it. That was a bit too bold, though.
"And there was no cleaning to do or anything, so... well, I did other things." Lorey's small finger pointed to the table of food and coffee.
Thinking he might like to wake up a bit before actually getting up, she went and brought him over a mug with little cream and sugar packets on the side. Lorey offered it with a wide smile and a small blush to her cheek. "Here you are. And, the gang in the kitchen wants to say thank-you, too. I sort of told them everything."
