~: Chapter 18 (6):A Letter From Vyn :~ Xiu’s left wrist ached badly from the creature’s surprise attack. Propping his head with his right hand, Xiu watched with half hearted enthusiasm as the customers browsed through the bookstore. Joshua was not getting any better and…neither was he. Xiu groaned softly. He needed help; someone to confide in at the least. He couldn’t tell the housekeeper. He was afraid she’d freak out and leave and that would leave Joshua alone with him. He had tried calling Hazeline this morning but the call did not go through. Who else? Certainly not Alex… he had gotten her into enough harm the last time he met her. What about Dr. Kyou? Well…the Doctor was certainly well versed in magic, but… Xiu’s hand felt heavy when he attempted to pick up the phone. Maybe not Dr. Kyou after all… It was then that the postman had arrived bearing a single letter for Xiu. The white frei was surprised. He wasn’t expecting a letter from anyone. Turning the letter over, Xiu read the writing on the envelope. Written in a neat and delicate hand were his name and address. So the postman wasn’t wrong then. But who could it be? Tearing the envelope open, Xiu took the letter out and smiled with delight. It was from Vyn! Vyn's Letter To Xiu.
Today I went somewhere that reminded me strongly of you Xiu. I am in Japan and for the past few days Ethan and I have been visiting different shrines in and around Tokyo. We have been to several now and whenever I see any of the carved stone statues I think of you and your wings. The calmness of the shrines also reminds me of you. The one that we went to today was called the Meiji Shrine. It was built in honour of a Japanese emperor and his wife. They died many years ago yet people still visit the shrine to pay their respects to them because apparently when it was built their souls were enshrined there.
I do not know about whether I saw or felt their souls... But there was definitely something tranquil about the place. You would’ve liked it I think. You like the peace and quiet and both Ethan and I agreed that we could imagine you sitting in an alcove their all day long reading a book and just soaking up the atmosphere. Have you ever been to a shrine? Maybe when I get back we could go to one together. The Meiji shrine was surrounded by woods and all the buildings were made from beautiful timber. There was a giant gateway when we entered and inside the shrine – in a courtyard was what looked at first to be a tree surrounded by weird decorations.
When I looked closer the tree was surrounded by thousands of notes left behind by visitors. I read one of them – my reading skills have improved lots over the course of my visit – and it seemed like people were writing down their wishes and putting them there. I looked for more information and found a little desk with paper and pens available. Apparently it is traditional to write a prayer whilst you are visiting and put it with everyone else’s in hope that it comes true. I wrote one for Ethan (because he can’t write Japanese) and one for myself and put them both on the tree.
My prayer actually involved you Xiu. I was thinking so much about you and how you would fit in that I wrote that I hoped that one day I would be as clever as you. I told Ethan and he said that if I told people that it wouldn’t come true... Or at least, that’s what happens with wishes in western culture. Now that I’ve already told Ethan I suppose it doesn’t matter if I tell you anyway...
I hope to see you soon when I come back.
Vyn.
Xiu’s heart quickened a pace. The temple! Why hadn’t he thought of this sooner? The warning he had…it was from that person in the temple wasn’t it? Perhaps he’d know how to solve this problem! Xiu’s eyes quickly glanced at the date the letter was written. That was two weeks ago. The letter had arrived late and if so… Vyn might be home! Feeling excited, Xiu hastily dialed the number printed on Ethan’s business card and waited…

~: Chapter 18 ( 8 ) : Meeting the Trader :~ Once he had seen Vyn home safely, Xiu had taken a short detour to the nearest park where he sat feeding off the innocence of passersby. He needed to think. The old man had said that he might be able to find help from a ‘trader’ located close to the next town’s graveyard. The bus ride into the next town would take half an hour. Somehow from the old man’s words, Xiu had an inkling that this trader was more of a night person and that going to seek him out now would be pointless. Besides, he had to hurry home. Taking the next available bus back, Xiu was glad to find everything was the way it had been when he left. Granted, it would have been better if Joshua was well but at least the poor boy was not getting any sicker…he hoped. Floating over to the feverish boy’s bed, Xiu watched as Joshua mumbled in his sleep. The housekeeper was in the kitchen, preparing a light meal for the poor boy. Xiu watched as she entered looking grave. “The doctor’s been over,” said Mrs. Bedievier. “He can’t seem to find what’s wrong with the child. There’s some vitamins and stuff but if it does not let up, blood samples will be needed,” said the housekeeper grimly. Xiu nodded silently. He knew how against modern medicine the old dame was but she tolerated it on account of it being effective. “Don’t suppose you know anything about it, do you?” the housekeeper suddenly enquired, looking sharply at Xiu. “You seem to be sleeping in here with him often enough these past few days,” “I am concerned about Joshua, yes,” said Xiu calmly before throwing a question of his own. “Hazeline still can’t be reached?” “Not since twenty minutes ago, no,” said the housekeeper getting up. “Well, I have other things to attend to so if you are not too busy…,” “I’ll feed him, Mrs. Bedievier,” said Xiu getting the housekeeper’s hint. “Good, I’ll be back later with his dinner then,” “Okay,” said Xiu as he watched the housekeeper leave. Once he was sure that the old lady was out of sight, Xiu quickly took the pieces of paper that the old man at the temple had given him and turned to stare at the window thoughtfully. These papers were supposed to prevent the being from entering so… With some measure of apprehension, the white frei floated over to the windowsill and peered out. The coast was clear. Gingerly taking a slip of paper seal (and feeling a little silly), Xiu extended his hand out and below the window and surprisingly, without the aid of any adhesive, the slip of paper adhered itself to the outer wall of Joshua’s room. Xiu wasn’t about to question this this time. He was…a raevan after all and when you thought of it that way, there were lots of questions that could be asked about raevans. Withdrawing his hand, Xiu then floated to Joshua’s bedroom door and stuck another piece of seal on it. There. That should do it. There were not enough papers for the whole house but…the important thing was that…Joshua was safe. Then, grudgingly, the white frei slipped out and did the same seal pasting in the housekeeper’s room. No point in endangering another life if he could help it… Once this was done, the white quietly settled himself by Joshua’s bed and began trying to feed the young boy his meal. Xiu soon gave up and after wiping up the spill, Xiu placed the still full bowl onto Joshua’s bedside table. Then, with a sigh, Xiu folded his arms and slept by the boy’s bedside. Xiu only awoke when the sun was setting and the housekeeper was jostling a tray with some warm gruel and a glass of water on it. Floating back to allow the housekeeper some room, Xiu slowly backed out. It would be a while before he was missed. Hopping onto the first bus that came along, Xiu observed the ever darkening sky with dread. What if the trader wasn’t there? What then? Graveyards were bad enough during daytime but night… Xiu shivered. Nighttime visits were a lot worse. The dampness…the coldness…the stillness… Yes, it was a lot, lot worse. The white frei’s rune glowed briefly at the thought but there was no backing out now. He had made a commitment and Xiu planned to see it to the end. The bus pulled over in the next town just as twilight set in and it was still some ways away from the graveyard. Using the available street signs, Xiu slowly made his way over. It was a quiet journey. There were not many people about. No surprises though. No human would want to spend his or her evening along quiet roads leading to cemeteries. Neither would Xiu, given the choice. Floating silently along the fence that separated the cemetery from the road, Xiu tried hard not to think about all the horror stories and shows he had seen; the ones with the hands sticking out from graves and blood spurting out corpses… A heavy mist was beginning to settle across the land. Here and there crickets were beginning to chirp. There was a slight rustle in the weeds, a sudden swooping shadow, a shrill cry…then silence. Xiu flared his wings uncertainly. For a graveyard, this place was teeming with life of a different sort. Already the crickets were resuming their nightly chorus and more creatures were rustling through the thick foliage. Xiu shuddered. The various cacophonies of animal noises were not reassuring to say the least. In fact, these nightly noises only served to remind Xiu just how far away he was from human habitation. “Hello?” called out the white frei into the ever darkening gloom and regretted it immediately. The crickets stopped chirping, the hidden animals stopped scuttling through the bushes and the silence was overwhelming. Then, through the stillness of the night, an answering reply came. “Welcome…,” Xiu hesitated. There was something about that voice that unnerved him. It was…cold, manipulative and …calculating. Squinting into the darkness where he thought the voice had come from, Xiu couldn’t see anything that looked like the owner of said voice. There was just a gnarled old tree, a broken fence, some tombstones… “A customer….please, come this way…,” What Xiu had assumed was a gnarled old tree was beginning to take shape as he floated closer. Branches that looked like branches were slowly taking on a more finger like form. A bough creaked and Xiu held his breath as something (or someone) pulled himself free of the tree’s shadow. At twice the height of a normal person, the trader was an intimidating figure. “Greetings,” said the dark being grinning sinisterly at Xiu. “You have…come for a trade?” “Errr…yes, yes I have,” said Xiu fighting the urge to back slowly away from the massive being. “I was told that…you might be able to provide the help I need,” The trader grinned wider. “I might,” it said slowly with a low hiss. “But do you…have the means to pay me?” “What is it that you desire?” said Xiu cautiously. Somehow, the white frei doubted that this particular trader woud be interested in mere cash. But… “Not souls, definitely not souls,” said the trader quickly before the white frei could continue. Looming over the raevan, the trader gave and exasperated growl. Xiu flinched. “Too many souls are traded in, much too many,” continued the trader, oblivious to Xiu’s unease. “They are getting cheaper by the day. Bad for business,” “Err?” hazarded Xiu looking up at the massive figure. The trader sighed. “ Used to be the in thing, this soul trading business but ever since the demons figured that they should skip the middleman and do their own soul collecting…,” The trader shrugged and gave Xiu a look such as a professional might give to an amateur. “So no souls,” it concluded briskly. “Offer me something else of value,” “Well…I… ,” said Xiu uncertainly. “ I certainly wasn’t thinking of offering my soul…but…I do need something that will stop whatever it is that’s attacking Joshua,” “Joshua?” enquired with trader with interest. “A young boy?” “Yes,” said Xiu nodding. “He’s been down with a fever ever since that creature…thing set her eyes on him.” “Ah,” said the trader with a sudden gleam in its red eyes. “Tell me, what’s she like?” “She’s…mostly all shadow and…red eyes,” said Xiu folding his wings close against himself. “And all anger and … determination to kill…,” The trader nodded, its grin never leaving its face; if anything, Xiu’s explanation had got it all the more excited, judging by the spastic movements of its disjointed arms. “In that case…,” The trader reached into a bag that seemed to have materialized from the shadows surrounding them and pulled out a long, thin object. Holding the item closer to Xiu for inspection, the trader grinned wider. “I’ll lend you this,” “But I don’t know the least bit about sword fighting,” protested Xiu looking at the ornately carved hilt and long slender blade. “It would be like…giving a monkey an aeroplane to fly…or something,” “The last I heard, monkeys were capable of going to space,” said the trader leering down at the frei. “And you think you might not know how to sword fight but … circumstances do change our perspectives sometimes,” said the trader holding the sword out to Xiu. “Now, will you test it?” The frei looked at the offered sword once more. Should he take it? He’d never held anything larger or shaper than a breadknife before but the sword was what the trader was offering. Gingerly the white frei extended his hand and took the hilt. The hilt felt smooth and in the moonlight, Xiu could make out its intricate gold finishing and each individual scale that was carved onto it. The hilt itself was of a smoky green colour and upon closer inspection, turned out to be jade. Interesting thought Xiu as he gave the sword a tentative swing. The blade gleamed coldly in the moonlight and for a moment it felt almost as though it had sliced through the night’s air. The trader watched silently and grinned wider. The frei and the sword made a good pair. A good pair indeed~ The trader chuckled. When he deemed that the frei had enough practice swings, he stepped forward. “I take it that you are…satisfied with this product?” Xiu nodded. He couldn’t explain why but…when holding the sword, he felt…calm, collected, controlled. Xiu wondered if all sword wielding people felt that way or was this merely overconfidence on his part. Seeing Xiu’s indecisiveness, the trader decided it was time to move in. “Of course, this is no ordinary sword,” the trader said as he rubbed his hands together. “This sword has the ability to…amplify its user’s strength and…precision to a fine point. A fine point indeed; as you may have experienced in your initial swing of the blade. It is a good sword,” said the trader almost wistfully. “Then…why are you…letting me have this sword then?” asked the white frei cautiously. Xiu was not a fool. No businessman would place themselves on the shorter end of the stick so if the sword was as good as all that, why was the trader offering it to him? Sensing the frei’s wariness, the trader gave a low rumbling laugh. “I’m merely loaning it to you,” “For what price?” demanded the frei, happier that they were finally on familiar grounds. All that mythical supernatural talk was getting beyond him but this, this talk of business and trade was something that he understood and what the white frei understood, he understood well enough. The trader wasn’t going to merely loan such an item out of the goodness of his heart so there must be a price. The trader nodded, impressed that the frei caught on. Most of his customers would be too engrossed in their newly acquired product to think much about the price…or the consequence. “Yes, there will be a price. That being you are after, she has something I need. My price for letting you borrow this sword would be…whatever it is that is left over once she is defeated,” “Left…over?” said Xiu weakly; the image of random bits of flesh entering his mind. “Yes,” said the trader nodding in response to Xiu’s question. “Although there won’t be much. She is, as you have said, mostly shadows. What I am interested in would be her…core,” “I see…,” said Xiu slowly. From the look of things, it gave Xiu the impression that he was the one doing the trader’s dirty work instead of striking a deal with him. “And…what if…I fail?” “Ah, now that’s where the collateral system comes in,” said the trader darkly.

~: Chapter 18 (9) razz onderings and Phone Calls :~ Xiu woke up in cold sweat; the events of the night playing over and over again in his mind. The trader had wanted a collateral contract for borrowing the sword and had given Xiu a day to think his offer over. It was a pretty direct contract in all sense and purpose. The trader would loan him the sword and keep something of his that was deemed of equal value until such time that the sword could be returned and the fee paid. In return, the trader would return Xiu’s… Xiu flicked his wings agitatedly at the thought. True, many people were capable of living without it but… To be handicapped in that manner… Xiu shut his eyes and buried his head into the bed’s soft mattress. He knew that saving a life was more important but… Could he really…do it? What if he failed? Well, the trader reasoned, then he’d not have much use for it then would he? Xiu growled silently into his pillow. He did not have much time, the charm the old man had given him had worked but it had also aggravated the creature immensely. Xiu remembered the anger and frustration that radiated from the creature when he had returned home that night with acute clarity. The creature had been hurtling itself against Joshua’s window pane and as Xiu watched, began to scream and shriek with renewed fury once it had spotted Xiu. Panicked, the white frei had wrenched the front door open and barely managed to slip in before slamming the heavy wooden door against the creature’s shadowy face. There was an anguished cry before a loud thud was heard as the creature collided with the thick wooden surface of the door. Then there was the scratching… The scratching began at the door and seemed to be following the white frei against the walls of the bookstore as the frei made his way up the staircase. There was the occasional thud followed by a deranged but feminine laughter. Xiu shivered and his rune glowed challengingly at the unseen enemy. Entering Joshua’s room, Xiu was at least glad to see that for once, the young boy was sleeping peacefully. The words on the charm pasted above the door glowed slightly in the darkness as creature tried to break its barrier. Xiu sat huddled against the wall by the young boy’s bed. Too afraid to sleep and yet to tired to do anything else, the white frei had watched as the scratching continued and on more than one occasion a pair of red eyes had glared at him through the glass pane. … Xiu had only left Joshua’s room when the dawn was breaking in causing the creature to withdraw as well. Once in his own room, the white frei had slept fitfully and had just awoken as afternoon drew in. He had about seven hours till the second meeting with the trader… He spent the first two looking after the bookstore after the housekeeper had hinted that maaaybe, a little help around the place wouldn’t hurt. He spent the next half hour trying to contact Hazeline, who oddly enough, still could not be reached. He spent another hour feeding in the park despite not being in the mood for it. He took another hour tidying up his room and writing a short message for his guardian should he…not make it. He spent the next two hours looking after Joshua, trying to contact Hazeline and checking that the seals were in working order. He still had half an hour to go… Tentatively the frei reached for the phone and hesistated. Who should he…call? He couldn’t possibly worry Vyn any further despite the rose frei’s kind words. He doubted Domevlo would be much help here; Zul…well…despite knowing him, Xiu felt that…he did not know him well enough; Lucia might be able to help but…she seemed the sort to…rush into things. Xiu did not want to get anyone directly involve if he could help it. Tariel was a sweet raevan but she was also a little…clueless at times. Hot headed and compulsive, Prajna probably wouldn’t be a good candidate either. So that left… Well, he couldn’t get Cordelia involved; she’s still such a young frei. The same could be said for Xue as well. Zavier was a smart and capable soul but…you do not phone and pour your troubles out to someone you’ve met only once. So… Rivener? No, he had troubled Rivener enough. The last time they did something together, he had made Rivener kill someone and on the next incident, Rivener had watched him drink blood… Lazarus? … Should he? Lazarus was a Sigel and had seemed like a responsible being (when he wasn’t trying to molest someone) and besides that…. Xiu felt colour rising slightly to his cheeks. He had not called ever since that incident. Lazarus had seemed genuinely sorry for what he had done but Xiu had not…taken the trouble to call him at all. … Perhaps it was for the best that he patched things up with the Sigel while he still had the capability to do so… Yes, that seemed like a valid…reason… ----------------------------------------------------------- [MSN RP between Lazarus ans Xiu ] Picking up the phone, Xiu slowly dialed the Lab’s number. It was getting pretty late so the other staff should have gone home by now. After putting away the groceries, Lazarus was just exiting the cafeteria when the phone in the reception counter rang. The Sigel looked around the empty hallway, Alex worked half day today and it looked like there wasn't anyone else nearby. Swiftly he floated towards the lobby, swinging the glass doors open and caught the receiver before the ringing ended. "Hello?" The phone had rung a couple of times and Xiu was beginning to wonder if perhaps…this wasn’t such a good idea after all. Maybe Lazarus was busy, what with the raevan tanks and all. Worse still, what if…someone else took the phone? What if it was the Doctor who took it? These thoughts alone were enough to make the frei’s determination waver and just as he was about to place the phone down, a voice had answered. It was Lazarus. For a moment Xiu was speechless. Now that he actually had the raevan he wanted, what was he…supposed to tell Lazarus? “Umm…Lazarus? This is…Xiu,” said Xiu in a small voice, partly because he felt silly calling the Sigel and partly because the housekeeper was nearby. “So umm…how are you?” A familiar voice came from other side of the line, Lazarus had to press his ear to the receiver to hear clearly. "Xiu?" He was actually surprised, he was expecting it to be a call from a guardian instead of a Raevan. "I-I'm fine, how are you?" The Sigel does not know why he stuttered there, perhaps he was nervous to hear Xiu, or perhaps he was affected by Xiu's nervousness.“Umm…,” this was not good. Not good at all. Lazarus’ nervousness was making his own nervousness worse. This was not what he wanted! H-He wanted someone firm and confident! Flaring his wings in frustration, Xiu tried keeping his voice steady. “I-I’m fine. Could be better but errr…yes, I’m fine,” said Xiu sounding a little too optimistic. Muttering a silent curse to himself, Xiu tried speaking once again. “I mean, I just thought I’d call to say ‘hi’ and umm…apologize for not calling sooner,” said the frei quietly. “It has been a while hasn’t it?” Although Lazarus couldn't see Xiu through the phone, but he managed to catch the tone of uncertainty in his voice. Is something wrong? "Yeah, it had been a while." Lazarus said quietly, his voice calmed down a lot more now as something else was on his mind. The last time he saw Xiu was during their little tour in Market Street, a little over a month had just passed.
Did something happened during that period? "Is... everything really alright?" He asked again, sounding concerned.Lazarus’ now calm voice did wonders to the highly strung frei. Lowering his wings, Xiu took a deep breath and smiled. Yes, this was how it should be. Perhaps he had gotten Lazarus unawares earlier and now that the initial shock was over, the Sigel was reverting to a calmer state of mind. Lazarus’ question however, did pose a problem. Xiu hesitated. Should he tell Lazarus his dilemma? About the trader and the…deal? Part of him wanted to (wasn’t that why he had called Lazarus? Perhaps a part of him actually wanted someone to know; wanted someone to stop him) but… “Yeah everything’s cool,” said Xiu finally. “I just…wanted to pass the time I guess…,” The long pause was a little worrisome, perhaps something was really wrong and Xiu doesn't know how to tell him? When Xiu replied, there was still some doubt in Lazarus's mind. However he couldn't find any reason why Xiu would lie to him, although he doesn't sound like he was lying either. "If you say so." He replied quietly. "So, what had you been doing lately?" “ Nothing much,” chuckled the frei wryly. “Just talked to Vyn yesterday. We visited a temple and umm…went back soon after that,” said Xiu with a smile. “Joshua’s not feeling too good so I am helping to look after him,” “But hey,” said Xiu as he gave the clock on the wall a glance. The bus to the next town would be arriving in a couple of minute’s time and he couldn’t afford to miss it. “I’ve got to go, Lazarus. There’s something that I have to do before the night’s over so umm…I hope I will see you next time? Maybe then…we’d be able to talk longer…or something,” said Xiu softly. There was a slight droop in his wings but barely noticeable when the white frei said that. Despite Xiu was trying to hide it, Lazarus could hear that the Frei seems exhausted from the wry chuckle. Perhaps this was due to Joshua's condition? Whatever it was must've kept their family on the edge. "Alright, it's a date, we will talk soon alright?" The Sigel said, trying to sound as optimistic as he can despite his worries.
Maybe if he could at least give Xiu some reassurance and a peace of mind, it will ease the Frei's worries. Xiu laughed softly. A date? It sounded odd coming from another male but given the circumstances, he wasn’t going to let that bother him. “Yeah, talk to you later, Lazarus. And thanks,” said Xiu before hanging up the phone. "Bye..." He said just before Xiu hung up, the word hung in the air as Lazarus put down the receiver. For some unknown reason, Lazarus still felt a strange sense of unrest. He was worried about Xiu. Maybe he should pay a visit tomorrow to see how they are doing. Although unknown to him, their reunion would be sooner than he thought.

~: Chapter 18 (10) : The Trade :~ The trader was waiting expectantly when the white frei arrived; his red eyes gleaming sinisterly in the darkness. “I see you have made up your mind then,” said the trader as he stood up to greet the approaching raevan. “Done everything? Contacted loved ones, said some nice things to the cat and all that?” “Y-Yes,” replied Xiu softly. “I have,” “Good,” sneered the trader. “After all, it’s peopl-; things like you that all those stories about being chivalrous and courageous are made of. Gives lots of kids false hope, that,” Xiu stayed silent. To a comment such as that, the white frei had no reply. He was doing this because…because this was the right thing to do. Anyone could see that. Besides, he had promised Hazeline that he’d look after Joshua when she was away. He could not break a promise to his guardian. “I’d say that another’s life is not worth risking your own for,” said the trader as though reading Xiu’s thoughts. “But heh, as long as it brings in business. You’d be surprised how many of my clients are doing trades such as these for the sake of someone else,” “Many of your clients do that?” said Xiu sounding surprised. “But I thought…,” “I’m not picky with my customers,” said the trader simply before bringing the sword out before the frei. “Perhaps if you survive the night, I miiight tell you a story or two,” cackled the trader darkly. “You might find them interesting,” “Perhaps…,” replied the white frei non-committally. He did not trust the trader and all this small talk was starting to get to him. “But I’d like to complete my task first if you...don’t mind…,” “Not at all,” said the trader graciously. “In fact if you’d care to read the initiating line of the contract…,” Xiu bit his lips as the first of the words initiating the contract appeared before him. Was he really going to go through with this? Was he really going to… “In order to…ensure that the required payment is made as well as to secure the safe return of the sword upon completion of its objective, I, Xiu sh-shall place my…voice as collateral and should I…fail in my quest, my voice shall be…forfeited. And with this…I initiate the contract between us,” said Xiu, reading the text as though in a trance; and as the last word of the last line was read, Xiu could feel something slowly tightening itself around his throat. Panicking, the white frei clawed at his invisible assailant, trying his best to free himself of its grasp. It was…choking him! Gasping, the white frei turned to the trader and was greeted by his leering smile mere inches away from him. “It is done,” said the trader in a voice barely above a whisper. The strangling sensation about the frei’s neck suddenly ceased and the white frei was released unceremoniously into the air. Flaring his wings to gain his bearing and putting as much distance as he could in a single leap between him and the trader, the white frei opened his mouth; intending to sound indignant but…no words came out. Shocked the white frei tried it again but was greeted with the same results. Dread filled the white frei as he turned towards the grinning trader. He had lost his voice. Well, not really lost it but…no longer in possession of it. “Well, don’t look so surprised about it. It’s in the contract you know,” said the trader; still grinning that infuriating grin of his. “And as promised…,” Xiu made a grab at the sword that was carelessly flung in his direction, his fingers closing over the sword’s intricate sheath. Holding it close to his chest, the white frei glared at the trader who was eyeing him in an amused manner. “You’d be surprised how compatible the both of you are, you know,” said the trader sly smile. “Best you be off to do some killing now. I will only be here till just before dawn after all…,”

~: Chapter 18 (11) : White Knight, Dark Shadow :~ Xiu floated back to the bus stop as though in a daze, the sword held tightly in his arms. He couldn’t believe it. He had actually done it. He had traded his voice for a sword. … Which he had no prior experience with… Which he hoped would somehow save Joshua… … This was getting a little depressing when you looked at the odds… Xiu sighed. Hopefully this would be the first and last reckless act he’d have to do in a long while. The bus arrived a few minutes later and the white frei was spared the awkwardness of having to speak when the bus driver recognized him. “Hey, you are that lad from yesterday, aren’t you? Dropping off at the same place?” the bus driver asked. Xiu nodded and took out the required change for a ticket. “A bit quiet ain’t cha?” said the bus driver as he keyed in the ticket number. “And what’s with that expensive looking fake sword? Going to a dress up party of some kind?” The white frei stared from the driver to the sheathed sword in his hands and shrugged. It was probably for the best that people thought the sword was an expensive fake. It certainly made floating in public easier. Taking a seat by the window, Xiu watched the scenery change as the bus drove on. The housekeeper would have probably cleared away the dishes by now and would have been preparing for bed. Joshua would still be in his room resting. And the creature? She’d be waiting… Xiu subconsciously gripped his sword a little tighter. “Here’s your stop kiddo,” the bus driver said, snapping the white frei out of his thoughts. Giving the driver a small smile and a nod, Xiu floated down to the dark lamp lit street. The feeling of dread grew as he neared the bookstore and apparently other creatures could feel it too. All the stray cats and the occasional night birds were gone; no doubt to someplace safer. The air surrounding the bookstore had become silent and oppressive, threatening to engulf any person or being that dared to defy them. The frei’s rune glowed brightly against the dark night. Xiu shivered, wishing it wouldn’t. This was not some fantasy story where a young boy miraculously becomes the hero of the story. This was… a situation where more than one life was at stake. A soft laughter greeted him and Xiu was painfully away that … he was not alone. Like a scene from a horror film, the lamplight closest to him flickered and went out with soft tinkle of exploding glass. The next lamp beside it went the same way and Xiu soon found himself gradually surrounded by darkness. With his heart thudding loudly in his chest and his rune casting just about enough light to see by, Xiu slowly backed away from the malevolent being. Two red eyes stared back sinisterly at him. The creature knew that the frei would not be able to make it to the house where…infuriatingly enough, it could not enter. But the seal was weakening, the creature could feel it. It was all a matter of time and the creature had time enough. It had time for everything. Including time for play… Like a cat toying with a mouse, the creature slowly moved forward towards the white frei; its red eyes never once leaving the terrified raevan. It had been so long…so long since it had had the thrill of the hunt! With a wild cackle the creature lunged and Xiu barely managed to dodge the being as it passed him by. Letting out a terrified but silent cry, the white frei watched with horror as the creature swiveled to face him once more. This is insane! his mind screamed as he held the sword tightly against his chest as though hoping it’d turn into a talisman of some sort. He was no fighter! He had never fought in his life! What made him think the situation would be any other than this? “Why are you doing this?!” the white frei shouted at cackling being but no words were heard. Instead, the being merely looked amused at the frei’s distressed state. Swirling and encircling the frei at an almost leisurely manner, the being made occasional jabs in the frei’s direction and took delight in watching the frei trying to dodge it. This…half formed thing before it was young; the creature could feel it. That floating thing was still a child…a …boy…child… Red eyes narrowed. It would see to it that this male child would not live the night. Xiu watched as the swirling shadows amassed at an even greater pace, all seeming to center around the creature’s glowing eyes. Whatever attack the creature was planning to unleash, it’d be a big one. In panic, Xiu’s eyes strayed down to the sheathed sword he was holding in his hands. Instinctively the frei drew the blade out of its sheath and stood holding the sword before the creature. Perhaps to the casual observer, the white frei looked impressive with his face set in a straight line and the sword held before him facing a shadowy foe but to the expert eye, the raevan was full of openings, dangerous openings… The creature charged and as he stood there watching the darkness barreling itself right at him, Xiu shut his eyes and swung. There was a sharp cry of pain and when the frei next opened his eyes, he saw that…he had wounded the creature. Howling with rage, the creature was now crouching a couple of feet away from him and where the sword had struck, the shadow had been cleaved into a straight line. Confused, the creature tried pulling itself together but try as it might, its severed end would not reform. It had never been hurt in this manner before. All previous attempts to stop it by humans had ended in failure so why was this…thing succeeding in hurting it? The sword flashed coldly in the light of Xiu’s rune and the creature’s eyes narrowed. That was the thing that had hurt it! Well, it was time to pay back! With a furious screech, the creature went at Xiu once more and this time, Xiu had his eyes open. Narrowly dodging the creature’s attack, Xiu stuck his sword out and dragged; feeling the pull of the sword as it sliced through yet more shadows and the cry of pain emitted from the creature as another part of it was sliced away. At this rate, it would be cut to pieces! Both raevan and creature stood panting and facing each other as if to gauge the strength of their enemy. Xiu was worried. He had gotten two lucky strikes in so far but the creature seemed to have realized that too. Already the frei could see that it was plotting something. Slowly, the shadows began swirly once again but instead of charging itself against the white frei, a feminine figure began to form itself from within the shadows and this was even more terrifying than its shapeless shadowy mass. For one thing, the only facial features on its face were its glowing eyes and…a bright red mouth equipped with sharp looking fangs. “Why?” the creature spoke as it stood before the white frei. “Why do you protect this child so?” Why indeed thought the white frei grimly as he stared down at his opponent. He wasn’t a hero so glory had no meaning for him. Neither was he a fighter so squaring off with another was never a subject of interest. Goodness, he wasn’t even brave! So why was he… Because he had promised to protect.Blue eyes stared silently out into the creature’s red and Xiu slowly squared his shoulders in preparation for another confrontation. He’d not let this creature lay its hands on Joshua. The boy was his guardian’s younger brother and he had an obligation to see to it that the young boy came to no harm. Receiving no reply from the white raevan, the creature prepared itself for another attack. It’d show this impudent child that it was not something to be messed with. Slipping once again back into the shadows, the being let out an eerie laughter. “Suit yourself, boy,” The shadow struck but this time, instead of rushing head on towards Xiu, it suddenly banked to left before turning and striking Xiu from the side. Caught off guard, the frei stumbled sideways as the creature hit him and winced when he felt the open wound on his shoulder. The creature cackled hideously as it homed in for another attack. Wound throbbing with pain, Xiu watched as the creature began amassing itself for another go at him. He had to think fast. There was only so many times that he could be hit like that. Shifting his sword to his good arm, Xiu waited with baited breath. He needn’t have waited long for as soon as the shadows had accumulated enough, the creature charged; letting out a terrifying scream as it did so but instead of dodging, Xiu met the creature head on. Needless to say the creature wasn’t expecting that. It had assumed that the frei would have tried to dodge it and in doing so, be torn apart by its finely honed edges but what the frei felt as he was smacked right into the very center of the creature was the feeling of sinking into very sticky dough very quickly. Trying hard not to suffocate, the white frei reached out. The trader had said that the creature had a core within all this swirling shadows and it did not take a genius to figure out that that was what one should be searching for in order to defeat the being. Xiu’s rune glowed dimly in the concentrated darkness and the white frei was slowly finding it harder and harder to stay focused. Blindly feeling about with his hurt arm while his other arm held on tightly to the sword, Xiu prayed that he’d come across the creature’s core soon. It was a one in a millionth chance but… Just as the frei was on the verge of passing out, his trembling fingers brushed against the edge of something solid, something that felt different from all the darkness that was surrounding him. Using his last burst of adrenaline, Xiu made a forced grab at the item and let out a silent cry as it burned painfully against his palm. With his free arm, the white frei swung the sword. Movement was slow and the blade sliced through the darkness like a butter knife through refrigerated butter but at least it was doing what the white frei hoped it would. It was cutting through all that insubstantial mass that was holding on to the creature’s core. Outside, the creature was writhing and screaming in pain as the sword began severing whatever it was that connected the creature to its core and as the sword continued its downward descend, the creatures’ scream became terrifyingly more human as the darkness was slowly being stripped away from it. From within the dissipating darkness, a white figure could be seen forcing his way through it with something wrapped tightly within the folds of his sleeves. Coughing and gasping as he finally tumbled out of the creatures’ quivering body, Xiu was vaguely away of the feminine form appearing before him once more. This time however, there was more than just red eyes and gaping mouth. The creature looked…human. And the human was…crying… Then there was a tired sigh… Struggling up, the white frei was just in time to see the last remnants of the being as it slowly faded away into nothingness. Once again the night was just… the night. Already the oppressive air was beginning to lift and Xiu could hear the distant sounds of night creatures as they returned to their nightly lives. Aching all over, the white frei slowly floated to where the sword’s sheath had been dropped during the fight and picked it up. Sheathing the sword, there was nothing the frei wanted more than to just be able to fall back and sleep but…dawn was just a few hours away and the last bus to the next town had stopped running hours ago. He’d have to leg the last couple of miles if he ever wanted to meet the trader again. If he was lucky, no one would have to notice anything. Sighing, the white frei began his journey into the next town…

~: Chapter 18 (12) : Two Stories and an Ending. :~ “So…you’ve made it back alive after all,” said the trader grinning as the figure of a fatigued raevan approached him. “And with time to spare at that,” Xiu was in no mood for any of the trader’s remarks. He was tired. The fight had taken a lot out of him and he felt…terrible somehow. He had won but…the winning had left him feeling…empty. There was no self satisfied nod, no proud patting on the back; nothing. He had killed and that was that. The bei- no, it was definitely a woman. He had killed a woman. Reaching into his robe, the white frei gingerly brought out a small newspaper wrapped item; the creature’s core. He had found a strewn newspaper not far from where the fight had ended and without a second thought the white frei had wrapped up the item in it. It was better than having it in direct contact with him or his clothes. Even now his hand throbbed a little from the burn that the core had given him. “Ah yes, the payment,” said the trader reaching out for the wrapped packed eagerly. “And what’s more, it’s barely damaged. You were a little rough with it but…,” the trader chuckled. “It’ll do,” The white frei nodded feeling relief. Now all that was left was… “Would you care to hear a story?” the trader asked giving the frei a sidelong look. Xiu’s wings drooped. The trader had hinted about a story earlier but now he was so terribly tired. He just wanted his voice back and perhaps a good old bench to lie on and sleep once he completed the trade. Actually, any bench would do. Just as long as it’s not near the graveyard. Graveyards always had a draining effect on him. In fact, he was getting wearier by the second here. “It concerns the being you just fought,”Despite his weariness, the frei couldn’t help but cast a curious glance at the trader. Just what did the trader know about this being? “Ah, I can see that I’ve got your interest now,” chuckled the trader slowly. “Well then, shall we begin?”

~:Chapter 18 (12a) : The Tale of the Vengeful Spirit :~ Once upon a time, there was a young maiden who wedded the only child of a prosperous family. Life was good for the young girl as she had come from a life of hardship. Marrying into the rich family seemed like a dream come true. Never again would she need to work the fields like so many of her predecessors. Like any young couple in love, the girl soon found herself with a child. Delighted, the boy’s family treated the young woman with even more care than she had thought possible. Joy and expectation grew within the family as the child’s birth drew near. But alas! Her joy was short lived as the young woman bore a child devoid of life from the very moment it set foot into the world. Devastated, the young woman thought that her heart could never bear such sorrows ever again. But time had a way of healing wounds and the boy’s family saw to it that no expense was too great for their beloved daughter-in-law. Soon, the young lady had herself another child. This time, the young mother was careful in keeping track of her health. Expensive food and care was provided without limitations to the expecting mother. However, luck was not on her side. Once again the young mother bore the family a stillborn; a child as lifeless as corpse. Devastated and ashamed, the young mother thought that that would be the end of her. She had brought shame and dishonour to this wealthy family whose son had fallen in love with her. But oddly enough, the family was sympathetic to the young woman and continued to care for her with their utmost love. But tragedy was never one to leave a prey behind for the young woman kept boring stillborn after stillborn until finally, eight small graves lined the family’s burial grounds. By this time, time and continuous suffering had taken a toll on the young woman. No longer was she the beauty that she had been. And yet… the family had be terribly understanding… With her ninth child on the way, the young woman was almost mad with the fear of bearing herself yet another stillborn. Day and night she paced her bedchambers worriedly. Her once beautiful nails were bitten to ragged stubs and no longer was she interested in her looks. So worried was she that on the day of her delivery, the young woman refused to drink her herbal concoction that was made by the head midwife. That night, screaming with pain, the young woman delivered and as she lay panting on her bed, the young woman distinctively heard the cry of a child. Her child. Mind finally at rest, the young woman fell into a deep and fitful sleep; unaided by the midwife’s brew. As morning filtered in, the young mother rose with renewed spirits in her heart. She had given birth to a living child! A living, breathing child at last! With joy in her every footsteps, the young mother (with the help of her faithful servants) made her way to the main hall, confident of the praises that were awaiting her. But to her shock, the young mother found herself faced with a mourning family. Her child, she was told, had been born dead like all of its previous siblings. Unable to accept that, the young mother ran screaming back to her room and refused to meet anyone for the remainder of the day. So sure was she that she had produced a living child, the young mother began snooping about the servants’ quarters with the hopes of shedding some light into her misery. And low and behold, the secrets she found from the mouths of careless servants! It turned out that she had indeed produced a living, breathing offspring but like its siblings, it happened to be…a girl; and because of that it was killed by none other than the master of the house; her husband, with the promptings of his parents. Anger filled the young mother to the point of madness. She had been deceived! She was not to be blamed for bearing dead children. All those pitying glances she had had to endure! All those lies!! ALL OF HER CHILDREN!!! It was then that It came to her; consoled her; told her that it needn’t be this way. She could avenge her dead children of only she had the courage to. All she needed to do in exchange was to give up her life. Needless to say, the young woman agreed without a second thought. Thus sealing her fate, the young mother was given powers she had never dreamed of. Powers so strong and destructive that the whole family was killed within a week of her acquiring it and as the last of member of the family was brutally torn apart, the woman’s life ended. But her vengeful spirit remained. Stripped off its mortal shell, the being no longer had to be curbed by the limitations of the flesh and was free to roam the land, killing every boy child and baby in memory of her unjustly murdered daughters.

“And that, young one, is the tale of the vengeful being you just fought,” said the trader looking at Xiu’s stunned expression with glee. “And since we are on a roll here, let me tell you the story about this sword now,” said the trader, giving the white frei a knowing look.

~: Chapter 18 (12b) : The Tale of the Skilled Swordsmith :~ Long ago, in a land far away, there lived a skilled swordsmith and his young wife in a small village. The couple loved each other deeply and as the swordsmith’s name was known far and wide for his immeasurable skill in sword making, the couple never had to go to bed hungry. But one day, his lovely wife fell ill and worried; the young sword maker visited every known doctor he could find in search of a cure for his ailing wife but to no avail. Devastated, the young man watched as his ailing wife grew ever weaker with the passing of time. Then one day, as he was drawing water from the stream, he was visited by a mysterious being who could offer his young wife a cure. In return, all he had to do was to make a sword unparallel in strength and beauty. A sword worthy of life for his dying wife. With trembling legs the young swordsmith ran home to his empty forge. It had been weeks since he had last made a sword and the embers have gone cold. With a deft hand, the swordsmith stoked the fires and pumped the bellows; bringing the dormant fire roaring back to life. From within his collections of rare ore and metal, the swordstmith drew his most prized ingredients and without a second thought, set them onto the forge, drawing out the pure metal from its impurities. All day and night the young swordsmith worked at his sword; only stopping to tend to his weakened wife and to his own barest of requirements. Day after day the swordsmith worked at his masterpiece feverishly, pounding and shaping, drawing and folding… But no matter what he did, the metal refused to be tempered with the water he’d drawn from the well by his forge. Frustrated at his lack of progress, the young swordsmith wandered into the village for a simple meal. It was then that he heard rumours that were being passed around by the villages at inn. Apparently in a secluded spring not far from the village, a traveler had spotted something astounding. According to the traveler, he had seen a Qilin drinking from its clear and quiet waters. The swordsmith listened to the tale with interest and an ever increasing heartbeat. Could he… Rushing home, the young swordsmith grabbed the largest bucket he could find and set out for that quiet spring. The Qilin was known to be a pure and benevolent being. Perhaps…just perhaps… Drawing water from the now sacred pond, the swordsmith immediately set back home and returned to his forge. Heating up the metal, the young swordsmith said a silent prayer before plunging it into the spring’s cold water and…lo and behold! The blade came out beautifully tempered. A finer piece of work the swordsmith had never seen and this gave him the motivation to complete his masterpiece. Selecting a magnificent piece of jade (given previously by a lord as payment), the young swordsmith carefully crafted the sword’s hilt; fashioning smooth scales into it in reference to the Qilin who had drank from the spring and once the sword was done, named it Qilin jian. Satisfied with his work, the swordsmith quickly set off in search of the trader and soon found him by the stream where they had first met. Offering the sword to the being, the swordsmith humbly request that a life be given to his poor wife. Impressed by the swordsmith’s skill, the being agreed and told the young swordsmith to return home. Overjoyed, the young swordsmith ran all the way home to find his wife quietly preparing the day’s dinner. She had recovered!

~: Chapter 18 : Two Stories and an Ending. (END) :~ “But…,” said the trader breaking Xiu out of his trance, “The being hadn’t been very honest with the foolish young swordsmith for you see, the life he had given to the swordsmith’s wife was a weak one; destined to burn out before long. A life that has been stretched terribly by the pains of giving birth to nine murdered children, to be exact…,” “Yes,” said the trader grinning as he watched the frei’s expression slowly changing from one of silent confusion to that of silent horror as understanding set in. “I was the one who traded with both that unfortunate woman and the naïve swordsmith…,” “And now…,” said the trader with a snap of his fingers. Suddenly the frei found himself unable to move and watched with horror as the trader slowly approached him. “Tell me, how was it like to kill a person? To rip their very core out of their living body? For you see, this thing here that you have brought me, it functions as a sort of makeshift heart for her. It was…the only thing keeping her soul alive and you have wrenched it out of her,” Every cell within the white frei ached as he tried avoiding the trader’s intense gaze but he was unable to. Trembling in place with the effort, Xiu watched as the trader got nearer and nearer and when they were finally inches apart, the trader hissed. “Do you really expect me to return you voice to you now that you have rendered my precious, precious sword useless?” Confusion showed on the struggling frei’s face. Rendered it useless? But…he brought the sword back with barely a scratch on it! He’d known if the sword was damage! “Not physically you fool,” said the trader gripping Xiu by the chin with his bony hand. “But because of you, the sword has chosen a master and will now serve no other,” Releasing the raevan, the trader took a couple of steps backwards, the terrible grin never leaving his face. “Do you seriously think that all those stories about swords choosing their masters were made up? Well, think again. Keep the sword. I no longer have any use for it but in turn you have forfeited your voice,” “And with that, our deal is done,” said the trader grinning maliciously at the frei. “Don’t ever bother searching for me again and with that, goodnight,” Giving the frei a light tap on the head, the trader continued to grin as the frei lost consciousness…

~:Growth Reflection:~ The white Sigel sat staring silently out of the infirmary’s window to the bustling street below. Up here in the secluded room, the noises from the traffic and passersby was muted and the white Raevan was thankful for that. After all that had happened, Xiu could appreciate a quiet spell of his own. The room was empty at the moment. Lazarus had been called out to handle the various chores that while seemingly mundane, was vital to the smooth running of the Lab. His shoulder ached. Xiu winced as he tried shifting his position into a more comfortable one. Or rather, into a position that elicited the least amount of pain. Who would have thought that growing would hurt this much. Blue eyes turned their gaze away from the window and its tantalizing scenes to the torso which he now possessed. Were they really his? What had happened? Xiu could not remember growing but grown he had. And from what he could tell from Lazarus’s explanation, by the time Rivener had found him, he had already grown despite still remaining unconscious. This was never how he had envisioned things would turn out. The white raevan had always…wanted no…assumed that a Raevan’s growth would come when he was ready for it. Like how birds knew when to migrate for the winter or how farmers could tell when it was time to bring in the harvest. … Well, something like that anyway. What it really boils down to was that…Xiu would have liked to be prepared for his growth. This sudden massive change felt surreal, almost unnatural. It felt…induced. Or was he just being melodramatic? Xiu realized that he had never asked other Sigels how their growth had come about but then again, he had been so naïve to think that there was still time. That there would be future opportunities. That he would ask the others when he was ready. But now that he had indeed grown, as he was constantly reminded of every time his bandages were changed or when his worrisome stomach rumbled; it was time to think of the future. Where would he go from here? Getting into grips with his new form was definitely a priority. Extending his right hand, Xiu clenched and unclenched his fingers. That did not feel any different. Then again, was he really expecting his motor skills to be any different overnight? There was a mirror in the room. Perhaps left behind by a previous occupant. Gingerly the white raevan pushed himself off the bed. He had been told to stay in it but the white Sigel did not fancy being confined to the bed all day. Besides, apart from the throbbing pain of his shoulder and burned hand, the Raevan felt…alright. Pretty good actually. The wounds, while severe, were not internal and as far as he could tell, his mind seemed pretty intact too. Granted, he had had a moment of weakness when he cried onto Lazarus’s shoulders while the other sat awkwardly with him through it all. There was no denying it, ever since he had noticed the mirror, Xiu wanted to take a look at himself. To see for himself the changes that the growth had brought about. Pausing for a moment to ascertain that no one was about to check on him, Xiu then made his way to the tiny table top mirror. It was a far cry from a full length mirrors he had seen in the examination rooms but one had to make the most of one’s resources. Staring at his reflection, Xiu noted the subtle and not so subtle changes his body had undergone. He looked…older. More worn out than he had last remembered but perhaps that could be attributed to the events of the last couple of days. More prominent though, were his wings. They had grown quite a bit and… Here Xiu gave them an experimental flick. He supposed they were heavier. They had to be since they were made of stone but they did not feel any heavier. That was probably a good thing. Xiu was not inclined to ponder over the mechanics of this. If one were to think about it logically, he should be dragging them along the floor by now. And now Xiu came across the most apparent change of all. He had a stomach. Or maybe it was abdomen. The stomach after all, was just an organ within the abdomen, right? Tentatively Xiu unbuttoned his vest and ran his fingers across his newly formed torso. It felt strange to be doing this but beneath the strangeness, there was also a sense of… pride? A small smile formed across the Sigel’s features. He would get used to this over time. Now that he had grown (whether he was prepared for it or not), he would learn to adjust and to grow into his new role. There were voices approaching. Xiu recognized it as Lazarus. A quick glance at the clock told the Sigel that the Fiery raevan would be over to help clean his wounds and change his bandages. Silently the white raevan made his way to the bed once more, face a little flushed from being nearly caught out of bed and when Lazarus entered, the white Raevan gave his friend a smile.
