Actually, he doesn't once smoke a cigar in the comics. Always cigarettes.... I think it was changed to a cigar because of the character archetypes associated with cigars ("The working man") rather than archetypes associated with cigarettes ("The cool guy").
I like the quiet moments, too. There are several in the comics, but they aren't usually ones involving Hellboy. Liz, Abe, and Roger all seem to have more relaxed moments. Roger's are often whimsical- they're some of my favorite parts. Abe's and Liz's are usually inward-looking and reflective. They aren't very 'jolly' stories by any means, although Odd Jobs has some really amazing stories that aren't very action-y.
Oh, and unfortunately it's not that they're popular. Barnes & Noble's, Borders, and a lot of other major book store lines simply do not carry Hellboy graphic novels or any other Dark Horse novels, though they'll order them if you ask. I have never in the history of my fandom found one of the major chains to carry them. sad

TM: I checked the bookstore near me and the Barnes and Noble near me and the BN had the rest of the graphic novels in stock but not the 1st one...and the other bookstore had the latest one that I have. They would have ordered them for me but I get them online at a better price from Amazon.com and free shipping when I order enough. smile
I wonder how the comics would have been different or the same if HB had been a girl? Hellgirl would have been a cute name...LOL

There's a picture in the back of "The Chained Coffin and Other Stories" that was made by some artist other than Mignola. The picture is of HB looking at a magazine called "Hellgirls".

TM: eek LOL I can see him reading a 'playboy' type of magazine like that. LOL Of course if HB were a girl...she would be looking at a HB magazine! LOL
I looked back at my HB:darkness calls and he smokes both cigarettes and cigars..... eek I guess he must not be addicted but just like the flavor of them? Rare to see someone who likes both....*scratches head*

Yeah, he's definitely not addicted. He really doesn't have an addictive personality. Does he really smoke a cigar? What chapter was that in?

Oh, yeah, the Domovoi. I remember when I was little (my mother taught English to Russian and Ukrainian immigrants) one of my mom's students told me about Domovois to the best of her ability. His English was imperfect, but the point was that I learned about them and I've always imagined one living in my parents' house in the guest bedroom. It would explain why my dogs used to start barking at random times at nothing in particular.
I've since scrapped that idea for the presence of a poltergeist in the house instead. I remember being eleven or twelve and watching a cup slide two inches away from me and then two inches back. To this day I have no scientific explanation for that event, but I keep searching. There's gotta be one somewhere.
At least I don't have to fight vampires and crap. Can you imagine working for the BPRD? It'd be crazy.

I wouldn't want to be inhuman. I find it distasteful to imagine myself as anything other than what I am... xd I'm kind of hopeless that way.

TM: I can get free shipping via amazon.com for some stuff. biggrin heart TFAW has such a limited selection HB at the moment... crying
Dinah-Hime: I never thought of that! eek I do admit some cigars do smell kinda good...though I smoke neither. I wonder if the chemicals in those things..cigars and cigarettes..could be good for half demons?

Real Cigars, Small Cigars, and Cigarettes are all very different from one another. In my opinion, none of them smell good.
Please don't call him a half-demon. That implies that it's like some lame unoriginal anime. As for the chemicals, I'm almost positive that's not the case. He functions identically to a human in pretty much all things and he's immortal.
