I didn't play much nethack, but can't you pray to not be hungry anymore? I seem to recall that.

That's...
Amazing. I've just played a samurai and a caveman on my random class pick. I think I know how to switch weapons, not sure how to equip armor yet, or pick up this meat from the things I kill. I seem to get food from lichen a lot, but never any from all the bugs, newts, and so on.

Yeah, you can pray to not faint from hunger.
I did that a lot one time... playing an archaeologist... where I mined out every square on the 1st level.
Since the game calculates the difficulty based on your explored area x the level of the dungeon, it ended up throwing vampires at me on the 1st level. I eventually died from being paralyzed by an eye monster I think, but I was a god in that vast expanse of nothingness.
...also, I turned into a were-jackal at one point during the excavation.

You can eat -everything- in that game.
...and 90% of the items you pick up are cursed.

That's because NetHack was made by jerks.
I have no proof, but I'm pretty sure Dash was one of the creators.

I like Dungeon Crawl. Which is pretty close to Nethack, only slightly easier.
Pick up a ring, try it on. Cursed. Ring of hunger. Become hungry very rapidly and consume all of my food while trying to find an uncurse scroll. Chop up and eat everything I kill, but raw meat is a poor substitute for actual food. Chop up some human mage I killed, eat the meat, find out it's diseased. Get sick. Stagger around trying to find a cure potion or scroll. Kill and eat more things. End up eating something poisonous.
Die horribly.

That sounds pretty boss too. Are the controls easier?

The controls are actually very similar because it's based off of Nethack. But there's a tutorial.
Pick up and try on a new ring. It's cursed. Ring of Mutations. Every now and again my character gets struck by a random mutation. Minus or plus stats. Grow scales that add to AC. Become horribly deformed and no longer fit into armor. Randomly and uncontrollably scream every few turns and destroy any chance I had of sneaking. Grow horns and lose the ability to wear helmets. Gain the power to levitate for a short period of time. Lose the ability to digest normal food. Start spitting poison. Start spitting fire. Lose more stats and become really weak and clumsy. Teleport to a random location on the level every few moments.
Best ring ever.
